Starz pirate drama "Black Sails" will be executive producer Michael Bay's first small screen venture, though the blockbuster king already has more series in the works -- post-apocalypse series "The Last Ship" at TNT and supernatural pilot "Occult" at A&E. The premium network unveiled a new, more impressive trailer for "Black Sails" at New York Comic Con this past weekend, which you can check out below. The series, which is a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island," was created by Jon Steinberg ("Jericho") and Robert Levine and certainly looks plenty lavish. It so pleased the crowds at San Diego Comic-Con that it's already earned a second season renewal ahead of its premiere in January. Neil Marshall ("The Descent," "Game of Thrones") directed the first episode.

It’s the end of the road for three pilots: A&E drama Occult and Comedy Central comedies Schlub Life and Bad Advice From My Brother. A&E actually passed on Occult three weeks ago, but producing studio ABC Studios kept it alive by shopping it around and engaged with conversations with potential buyers. Unfortunately they didn’t pan out and the project is now officially dead. Occult, produced by Michael Bay and written by James Wong, centered on an FBI agent (Josh Lucas) partnering with an agent specializing in the occult (Lynn Collins). Greg Hess’ Schlub Life was about two irresponsible best friends. Bad Advice From My Brother was written by Jordan Pope Roush based on his blog of the same name.

With horror on TV being several networks' hot ticket, it comes as a bit of a surprise that A&E has passed on the new series written by James Wong ("The X-Files," "Millennium," "American Horror Story") entitled "Occult." Read on for details.
According to TVWise the cable network will not be moving ahead with the hour-long pilot that has been in development since 2012. "Occult" was well received by executives, but following the pick-up of "Those Who Kill" and the renewals of "Longmire" and "Bates Motel," A&E brass felt that the proposed project was not in “a direction we wanted to pursue.” The news comes after A&E announced last month that they are developing an adaptation of the French series "The Returned" (Aka "Les Revenants"), which is being produced in-house by the recently launched A+E Studios.
Daniel Henney, Brennan Brown, Josh Lucas, Lynn Collins, and Agnes Bruckner were signed on to star.

An new pilot in development over at A&E may just echo the presence of Fox “Spooky” Mulder on the small screen. The pilot is called Occult and NCIS alumnus Sarah Jane Morris will spirit up a performance.
We’ve seen shows promise to offer some of that magic the X-Files delivered in its prime before, but the pilot for Occult has a leg up on such hopefuls. It was written by X-Files scribe James Wong.
That tidbit was the first item to get my attention. Ready for the second? The pilot will star Josh Lucas. Can I get a woot, woot? I’m a Lucas fan. How can you not like those soulful blue eyes. The actor was the best thing about the short lived series modeled after The Firm.

It’s always great news when a show idea we’ve been following actually starts casting; it gets us thinking that the thing might actually get made. We first told you about Occult, a pilot picked up by A&E, last fall. It’s a Michael Bay (Transformers) -produced series about an FBI occult crimes task force, centering on FBI Agent Dolan, who joins the new unit upon his return from administrative leave, so ordered after going off the deep end while investigating his wife’s disappearance.
(L-r) Morris, Lucas, Collins
Word now comes from TVLine that things are moving along in the casting department, with the most recent hire being Sarah Jane Morris (NCIS) as that missing wife. So presumably we’ll be seeing her in flashbacks, or… hmm!

The pilot for A&E's "Occult" has just expanded by two as both Daniel Henney and Brennan Brown have signed on to co-star in the project, which already boasts a pretty impressive cast with Josh Lucas, Lynn Collins, and Agnes Bruckner.
The potential new series is written by James Wong ("The X-Files," "Millennium," "American Horror Story"), who will executive produce with Michael Bay and his partners at Platinum Dunes, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, producing.
"Occult" revolves around Dolan, an FBI agent (Lucas) who has returned from administrative leave after going off the deep end while investigating his wife’s disappearance. Eager to be back on the job, he is paired with an agent with her own complicated back story who specializes in the occult (Collins). Agnes Bruckner had the honor of portraying Anna Nicole Smith in Lifetime’s biopic of the former Playboy model and must have impressed someone because she has already been snatched up for another of A+E Networks’ projects. Her latest role will put her in a world much more gritty and scary than the world of a Playboy model – not that that life is easy, especially given Smith’s sad story. But the Smith biopic rests in fact and truth, while Bruckner’s part in A&E’s Occult will her bring into supernatural realms that will certainly test her abilities as actress, especially given the specifics of her character.

It may not be intentional, but A&E has cooked up a drama pilot that sounds remarkably like X-Files or Fringe. Part of the similarities might be due to former X-Files writer James Wong having penned the script, but I think no matter who wrote Occult we’d be able to look at this and say we have a pilot that might not be all that original. But what really counts as original these days? Everything’s a copy of a copy so there’s no need to tear down someone’s work just because it doesn’t stand out as unique. That is unless it’s so blatantly a rip off as to be insulting.
Thankfully, Occult at least has two leads lined up that will hopefully carry the potential series above any misconceptions about originality. Josh Lucas and Lynn Collins were reported by TVLine to be the co-stars of this series.
