Élodie Yung played Elektra Natchios in Netflix’s Daredevil in the second season and later reprised the role in The Defenders. Yung’s Elektra appeared as the former lover of Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock in the series and fans took quite a liking to her. Unlike Jennifer Garner’s version of the career, Yung’s character tapped more into the antagonistic side of Elektra.

There's a moment near the climax of 2018's "Black Panther" when you realize, while watching it for the first time, that a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie is about to stick the landing on one of the greatest superhero stories told in any medium. It isn't Okoye's (Danai Gurira) stand-off with her traitorous husband (Daniel Kaluuya), nor is it the heartbreaking death of the lost prince Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan).
It's Chadwick Boseman, rising with the sun over his subjects on the plains of Wakanda, proclaiming to his would-be usurper, "I never yielded!" It's arguably the best moment in the entire MCU -- and it undeniably cemented Boseman as a performer with an incomparable mixture of dramatic gravitas, genre savvy, and sheer talent.
When Boseman passed away in August 2020, he had already earned a legacy in Hollywood that few could ever dream of, much less achieve. We've ranked every Chadwick Boseman...

Why do we like Gerard Butler? As of the publishing of this piece, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is performing as expected, looking to become yet another reliable, mid-budgeted programmer hit for the movie star. It’ll round out nicely in theaters, then do well with VOD and home sales. This kind of success is exceedingly rare these days; even Liam Neeson actioners underperform after years of semi-reliability. So: what is it about Butler?
There is a scene somewhere in the middle of Pantera in which “Big Nick” O’Brien (Butler) and Donnie Wilson (O’Shea Jackson) are sitting outside a bar in the south of France, sipping beers on the come down from a night of hard-partying. Los Angeles cop Big Nick has both “gone gangster” and gone international, turning to a life of crime and following Donnie into a heist-laden world of intrigue. The two frenemies proceed to...

Throughout the 2010s, and lingering into the 2020s, massive, corporate-backed I.P. has dominated both the domestic box office and the American journalistic conversation about cinema in general. We live in a world where reporters, when they had an opportunity to sit down with Martin Scorsese to discuss new masterworks like "The Silence" or "The Wolf of Wall Street," decided to ask him about Captain America and his place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Vocal subverters of the dominant paradigm repeatedly yawped that Hollywood should devote more time and resources to new ideas. After all, why be the next "Star Wars" when you can be the first of something different? Where, oh where were the original sci-fi/fantasy ideas?
But then, when an ambitious filmmaker tries to make something new and striking for a broad cinematic audience, it generally tanks. It seemed that audiences were more eager to attach themselves to...

How does every Gerard Butler Action Movie rank beside each other, with Den of Thieves hitting theaters in 2025? Butler trained initially to become a lawyer before a change of heart saw him pursue acting inside. Oddly, his breakthrough role came as the titular bloodsucker in Dracula 2000, a movie that didn't win over audiences or critics. He always seemed on the cusp of stardom without entirely tipping over. That changed significantly thanks to Zack Snyder's 300 in 2007, where his mega turn as King Leonidas instantly propelled him to the A-list.
Over the years, Butler has made everything from tender dramas like Dear Frankie to rom-coms with P.S. I Love You or animation with the Watchmen horror spinoff Tales of the Black Freighter. However, action has become Butler's stock-in-trade, whether fantasy blockbusters or gritty cop thrillers. The star has cornered the market in terms of fronting modestly budget, R-rated action...

For a time, it looked like Gal Gadot might make the leap from the Dceu to Dcu to continue playing Diana Prince. It never really made sense for James Gunn to only recast two-thirds of the Trinity, though, so Wonder Woman 3 being scrapped wasn't a huge shock.
Creature Commandos has introduced the idea of Themyscira and even shown us an Amazon in action thanks to the debut of Anya Chalotra's Circe. While Gunn has remained relatively quiet on Wonder Woman plans, we know the Paradise Lost TV show is still in the works.
In this feature, we're taking a look at 8 actors we believe would be an ideal fit for the Dcu's Wonder Woman. They're all very different - just remember that CGI may be used to enhance Diana's stature - but each would bring something exciting to the table.

Zack Snyder's 300 is based on the remarkable true story of the historical Battle of Thermopylae. 300 transformed Gerard Butler's Hollywood career and just may be the peak of his extensive filmography. 300 was released in the United States on March 9, 2007, and became the tenth highest-grossing movie of that year, earning $456 million worldwide against a production budget of $60 million. The epic action film was only Zack Snyder's second feature directorial effort following his breakout 2004 horror film Dawn of the Dead. 300 led Snyder to take on other blockbusters such as Watchmen (2009), Man of Steel (2013), and Justice League (2017).
The impressive box office performance of 300 inspired a sequel in 2014, although Snyder did not direct 300: Rise of an Empire. A 300 prequel series has recently been reported to be in the works at Warner Bros, with Snyder rumored to be attached. Although Butler never reprised his role as King...

Back in 1994, exactly one million years ago, Alex Proyas released The Crow into theaters. A gothy, violent action spectacle about a rock musician who returns from the dead to take vengeance on the people who killed him and his fiancé, The Crow tapped into the budding emo spirit of the youth at the time. I personally know someone who has multiple Crow tattoos, so the movie meant something to people at one point.
Part of the movie's lasting legacy involves star Brandon Lee, the son of Bruce Lee, who died during production. The Crow had a lot of sequels, and Alex Proyas has long disapproved of all them, including the new remake starring Bill Skarsgård in the lead role, because he considers them made in bad taste. According to The A.V. Club, Proyas once wrote on Facebook about the new movie: "I really don’t get any joy from seeing...

You can't please everyone, as the saying goes, but it isn't every day that a jilted filmmaker fires shots -- both publicly and directly -- at a major property that's just released in theaters. Most would probably avoid courting such headlines, but Alex Proyas isn't like most filmmakers and the ever-vocal director isn't holding back on the newly-released remake of "The Crow." Proyas has been a veteran in this business for quite some time, directing 1998's "Dark City" (which still holds up as one of the smartest sci-fi movies ever made), "I, Robot," and, yes, the 2016 flop "Gods of Egypt." But he's perhaps most well-known for bringing the original "The Crow" to life in 1994, starring the late, great Brandon Lee in what would turn out to be his final film after a tragic on-set accident involving a firearm. There have been several attempts at remaking the film throughout the last few decades,...

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week: several music videos by Alex Proyas. I'm an Alex Proyas-apologist. His film record is widely considered spotty with Dark City and The Crow having a deservedly large cult following, I Robot and Spirits of the Air, Gremlins of the Cloud having some staunch defenders, and Knowing and Gods of Egypt only being defended by a handful of people (including me). Garage Days? Well, that one doesn't measure up to the rest, which I do all love wholeheartedly. There is a reason it was forgotten, but its inclusion in the Proyas-canon does make sense when you realize that he started out doing music videos. So him directing...

Gerard Butler's peak action film is the iconic 300, marking a legendary role that still resonates today. Despite star performances in Gods of Egypt, the film falls short in comparison to Butler's most memorable roles. 300's plot and visuals far surpass those of Gods of Egypt, making it a more entertaining watch for action movie fans.
Nevermind Gods of Egypt, Gerard Butler's best action movie came out nearly two decades ago. While Gods of Egypt features star performances from Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Chadwick Boseman, the film wasn't able to inspire the level of cultural phenomenon that some of Butler's better-known films have accomplished. Gods of Egypt was directed by Alex Proyas and written by screenwriting duo Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.
Released in theaters on February 26, 2016, Gods of Egypt flopped at the box office, earning just over $150 million against a lofty production budget of $140 million. As...

Whitewashing of Egyptian gods with white actors led to a negative impact on Gods of Egypt. Lack of diversity in casting choices resulted in backlash, poor reviews, and financial failure. Movie's failure at the box office emphasized the importance of diversity and inclusivity in Hollywood.
Gods of Egypt faced heavy backlash ahead of its theatrical release. Directed by Alex Proyas, the 2016 historical fantasy epic received a great deal of attention, due in large part to its ensemble cast. However, that didn't lead to it becoming a smash hit at the box office or a critical success. The discourse surrounding the film was overwhelmingly negative, so much that it had to be addressed publicly by those involved.
Rather, Gods of Egypt was considered a failure across the board. Firstly, its box office haul of $150 million barely exceeded the cost to make the film ($140 million). Its critical reception hardly helped matters, with...

Alex Proyas, the director of 1994’s The Crow, argues that the original film should have been left to stand alone out of respect ‘for Brandon Lee’s legacy’.
Remaking 1994’s The Crow was always going to be a particularly tricky proposition, and given the recent wave of criticism that has accompanied the release of first-look images and the trailer for the upcoming film, that is certainly proving to be the case.
Not only is the film a beloved mid-90s classic, but it also marks the final appearance of Brandon Lee, whose life was cut tragically short when an on-set sequence with a prop gun during the film’s production killed him at the age of just 28.
As such, the film holds a special significance for many, including its director Alex Proyas, who has repeatedly called for The Crow not to be remade over the last few years.

Grant Page, the larger-than-life Australian stunt performer famous for his jaw-dropping work in films including Mad Max, The Man From Hong Kong and Mad Dog Morgan, has died. He was 85.
Page died Thursday when the car he was driving near his home in Kendall on the coast of New South Wales hit a tree, his son Leroy Page told Daily Mail Australia.
Page worked with director Brian Trenchard-Smith on more than a dozen projects, including The Stuntmen (1973), King Fu Killers (1974), The Man From Hong Kong (1973) — where Page fights martial arts expert Jimmy Wang Yu in scenes using knives, cleavers and meat hooks — Deathcheaters (1976), Stunt Rock (1978) and Hospitals Don’t Burn Down! (1978).
And for the documentary Dangerfreaks (1987), Trenchard-Smith filmed Page standing on a ledge outside the perimeter fence on the observation deck of the Empire State Building in New York.

If you want to see a wild midnight movie, there’s a little-known Australian movie called Stunt Rock, which might blow your mind. In it, an Australian stuntman named Grant Page (playing himself) visits Los Angeles to do stunts for a TV show and hooks up with a heavy metal band named Sorcery (the band is like Kiss if they also did magic). It has many fans, including Eli Roth, who used one of Sorcery’s songs in his Death Wish remake and is prominently featured in an incredible documentary about Australian exploitation films (Ozploitation) called Not Quite Hollywood.
More than anything, this documentary was a loving tribute to Page, who did incredible stunts for almost every cool action film shot in Australia over the last fifty years, including Mad Max, and Road Games (in which he played the mostly unseen villain). Sadly, Mark Hartley, the director of Not Quite Hollywood,...

For most of the older audiences, Jennifer Garner is the only live-action Elektra that they are emotionally tied to, no matter how bad her standalone movie was. But back when Netflix was making shows based on Marvel characters, Elodie Yung embodied the young assassin and Daredevil’s love interest and fans took quite a liking to her.
Now it’s been confirmed that Garner will reprise her role as Elektra in the upcoming ‘Daredevil & Wolverine,’ and since ‘Echo’ has canonized a good portion of the ‘Defenders’ saga plenty of fans have been hoping that Elodie Yung will make a return as Elektra in the MCU. Screen Rant's Pitch Meeting for Gods of Egypt hilariously points out plot issues and the excessive budget spent on the film. The movie's low critical reception could be credited as due to the writers' negative track record and the director's decline in critical success. Whitewashing casting choices and competition with other films contributed to Gods of Egypt's box office failure.
Screen Rant's Pitch Meeting series is going fantastically ancient as the latest episode explores Gods of Egypt. Sony Pictures’ recent release Madame Web is directed by S.J. Clarkson from a screenplay she co-wrote with Claire Parker and a writing team of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The movie stars Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim and more.
The movie is a suspense thriller that follows the story of Madame Web’s origin story in a standalone universe. Madame Web is a part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and opened up to negative reviews from the critics as well as the audience. Dedicated fans of Marvel Comics mentioned how the writers of the movie do not have a single successful movie under their kitty.

It seems that Madame Web has unwittingly become a smash hit, falling squarely into the category of “so bad it’s good.” In the past few months, the only thing the film has managed to get right is making tons of headlines be it all for the wrong reasons, but the film was anything but forgettable, at least in the news cycle. Now, folks are itching to know what all the fuss is about. Despite nobody taking it seriously as an actual superhero flick and a string of bad reviews, thanks to its wonky dialogue and choppy editing, people are still lining up for a peek. It’s a marvel, just not the kind anyone expected!

Well, although people had high hopes for the Dakota Johnson-Valentine release this year, Madame Web has been all over the place. From sloppy marketing to confusing script with dialogue disasters, the film’s journey has been anything but smooth. With a dismal 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s safe to say Madame Web missed the mark.
But hold on, Johnson isn’t alone here! Turns out, the writers are in a bit of a pickle, churning out one dud after another. That’s why @CultureCrave on X cooked up a spicy list, showcasing the Rotten Tomato scores from the writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless’ previous ventures. And it does not look good on them.

Madame Web has a clunky script and lacks charm, with awkward dialogue and underdeveloped characters. The movie wants to be a Spider-Man film but falls short due to its thin world-building and strange relationship to Peter Parker. Despite some stylistic elements in its filmmaking, Madame Web is ultimately boring, unimaginative, and dated.
Ever since Sony Pictures struck a deal to have Spider-Man join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the studio has tried to build up a cinematic franchise of their own based on related characters, the latest entry of which is Madame Web. Similar to Venom and Morbius, Madame Web follows a character originally introduced in relation to Spider-Man in Marvel Comics, but because of the nature of Sony's deal with Marvel Studios, it has to work around the lack of Peter Parker. In Madame Web's case, that means introducing four other Spider-People... sort of.

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

On another sleepy autumn weekend at the box office when actors can’t promote their movies due to the strikes, Millennium Media and Lionsgate are rolling out the latest in their long-in-the-tooth Sylvester Stallone-Jason Statham franchise, Expendables 4, to a weekend take between $15 million-$17 million.
That range is right around where 2014’s Expendables 3 opened –$15.8M– and not far from where Stallone’s last Rambo film resided pre-pandemic, 2019’s Rambo: Last Blood, which bowed to $18.8M. Expendables 3 ended its stateside run at $39.3M while Rambo: Last Blood finaled at $44.8M.
Guys over 25 are the grab with the fourth movie about over-the-hill action heroes booked in 3,400 theaters. The R-rated movie is also playing at 700 Plf screens including Xd, Rpx, Dolby and D Box. Previews start at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Similar to other Lionsgate pics with Millennium, the former is handling North America and UK. Again, all these meat-and-potatoes...

Nobody sets out to make a movie that will fail, be it a tiny independent production or the biggest of big blockbusters from a major studio. On the flip side, occasionally arrogance of a sort sets in and there is an element of presumed success with a film, and those projects -- more often than not -- feel doomed to fail. Such was the case with Lionsgate's 2016 big-budget fantasy play "Gods of Egypt," which bombed spectacularly upon its initial release. Yet, lofty ambitions existed as this was eyed as just the first entry in a brand new franchise. Before it all went to hell, that is.
The film, directed by Alex Proyas, cost a whopping $140 million to produce before marketing, putting it firmly in gigantic blockbuster territory. But it made a paltry $31 million in total at the domestic box office and topped out at $150 million worldwide. Per Variety, Lionsgate...

"Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" first hit the airwaves in 1993, and even though that original iteration of Rangers didn't last all that long, the series has remained remarkably enduring. 30 years later, the series has aired nearly 1,000 episodes through its various iterations, has inspired hundreds of issues of comics books, millions in toy sales, and is truly a globally recognized brand with huge staying power. Still, the franchise has never managed to fully crack the code in making the jump to movies.
Two films, the "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" movie in 1995 and "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie," did fine enough by '90s "kids movies based on a show" standards, which were ultimately more about selling toys and copies of the films on VHS.

Plane is an old-fashioned action thriller that features two well-known actors in leading roles. Directed by Jean-François Richet from a screenplay by Charles Cumming and J.P. Davis, Plane is the year’s first major action flick. Following a commercial pilot who must execute an emergency landing, only to land on an island that is less than friendly to visitors, Plane received a generally positive critical reception, and is expected to rake in a modest 7-10 million at the box office in its opening weekend.
When it comes to releasing a decent action thriller, hiring a veteran of the genre is never a bad decision. After all, Tom Cruise is still attracting audiences with action flicks like Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Plane is not without a notable action star, having cast Gerard Butler in a role that requires brute force and warmth. Butler is joined by several others,...

Plane reviews are in, and they are looking surprisingly good. Action star Gerald Butler plays a commercial pilot who, after his plane is damaged by a lightning strike, makes an emergency landing on the war-torn Island of Jolo in the Philippines. Soon after, most of his passengers are taken hostage by heavily armed rebels, forcing him and a fugitive on board, played by Luke Cage's Mike Colter, to attempt a daring rescue mission. The Plane trailer went semi-viral online when it was released late last year because of its hilariously generic title, coupled with the ironic fact that most of the movie takes place on the ground.
Now, the first Plane reviews are in, and they are surprisingly praising Gerald Butler's latest action movie. At the time of writing, Plane is flying high above the certified fresh threshold on Rotten Tomatoes in the 70 percent range. While most of the reviews...

With director Olivia Wilde recently opening up about the controversy surrounding her film Don't Worry Darling, it isn't unusual for a movie to lead to frayed nerves behind the scenes. Directors have such a personal connection to their work that they tend to take it personally when something doesn't work out.

Here's every upcoming Gerard Butler movie sequel, including the long-anticipated Night Has Fallen. Butler had scored plenty of notable roles before his breakthrough with 300, but that 2007 blockbuster took his stardom to another level. In the years that followed he appeared in everything from romantic comedies (P.S. I Love You) to dramas (The Vanishing), but his greatest successes came with the action genre. Like Jason Statham, he carved a niche for himself in mid-budget action thrillers, including Law Abiding Citizen - which is getting a Butler-free follow-up of its own - or Olympus Has Fallen (whose White House siege was done by 24 first).
Most of these films follow a similar formula, being R-rated action pieces where he plays sarcastic men of action, while distinguished co-stars such as Gary Oldman or Morgan Freeman appear to add some gravitas to proceedings. It’s become something of a running gag on the internet that “Morbius” isn’t really a movie. Online observers insist that, from its ever-changing release date over the last two years to its grim and somewhat goofy premise involving Jared Leto as a scientist who turns into a vampire, this has to be an elaborate prank and not an actual film.
We can confirm that “Morbius” is, really and truly, a movie. Granted, it’s not much of a movie, but it’s a movie nonetheless.
Leto does indeed star as Michael Morbius, a world-renowned physician — talented enough to invent an artificial blood substitute, iconoclastic enough to turn down the Nobel Prize he won for the invention — who has grappled with blood-borne disease since childhood. With the financial support of lifelong friend and fellow patient Milo (Matt Smith), Michael has become a leader in his field, even as he...

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will star in and executive produce a series adaptation of the Christina Clancy novel “The Second Home” currently in the works at Sony’s TriStar TV, Variety has learned.
The story follows the Gordon and Shaw families beyond a fateful summer on Cape Cod. Told through two generations, the story explores how a devastating secret can derail young love, tear apart families, and change the fate of countless individuals forever if they let it. “The Second Home” was Clancy’s debut novel. It was published by St. Martin’s Press in June 2020.
No network or writer is currently attached to the series, but Coster-Waldau will executive produce along with his producing partners Joe Derrick and Jeffrey Chassen under their Ill Kippers banner.
Should the series move forward, it would mark Coster-Waldau’s first television role since “Game of Thrones” ended in 2019. He famously played Jaime Lannister throughout the megahit HBO show’s eight-season run.

Hollywood star Gerard Butler admits being a control freak. Butler was serving as a producer for the film, Greenland, when he enjoyed the chance to have a more hands-on role in the project.
"I'm a control freak! As an actor, when you're coming up, you beg for roles, and you're lucky to get one and then you suddenly find yourself in a position where movies are being made, because you're involved," Butler told Total Film magazine, femalefirst.co.uk reported.
Gerard Butler added: "So if that's the case, you say, 'I want to produce it, I want to have some control, I want to help shape this film.' Not the studio movies, like 'Gods Of Egypt' or 'Geostorm'. But all the other ones, in the independent world.
He loves being very involved. "I get a chance to develop, be involved with script, choose the director.

Sony are once again hedging their bets on an interconnected superhero franchise, despite the relative failure of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 already causing them to abandon the idea once before and strike the unprecedented licensing agreement with Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios, which led to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker becoming an integral part of the McU.
This time they’ll have to do it without their most marketable asset, because while details of the new deal signed last summer haven’t been made clear, most people are operating under the impression that Marvel will handle solo Spidey movies, but Holland will show up in the Spumc from time to time.
Venom was a monster hit that raked in over $850 million at the box office, and this summer’s sequel Let There Be Carnage is poised to do big business, but there are no guarantees that Morbius will experience a similar level of success.
