Disney+ has ordered to pilot a series based on the acclaimed book from Louis Sachar, “Holes,” an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire. The project will be a new take on the story, this time gender-swapping the characters to make it about a teen girl sent to the desert to toil away in the dirt.
The Disney+ series will be a project of 20th Century Television’s and will be executive produced by Drew Goddard via his Goddard Textiles banner, with Alina Mankin serving as writer and EP and Liz Phang serving as showrunner and EP.
No cast was announced.
Sachar’s “Holes” from 1998 was previously adapted into a 2003 Disney film starring Shia Labeouf, which made $71 million worldwide against a $20 million budget. Adam Pally is among those in Hollywood remembering late director Jeff Baena, who died Friday by suicide at the age of 47.
Baena was a writer-director who helmed such indie films as Life After Beth, The Little Hours, Horse Girl and Spin Me Round, often working with wife Aubrey Plaza. The pair married in 2020 after being together for 10 years.
Pally and others who knew Baena have taken to social media over the weekend to share their memories of him, after the news of his death broke early Saturday morning.
On Instagram Sunday, Pally wrote, “Jeff Baena was a sweet, Jewish boy from Miami. He was a collaborator, a mentor, the scrappiest basketball player with the ugliest jump shot you ever saw.”
The actor, who starred alongside Plaza in Baena’s films Joshy, The Little Hours and Life After Beth, called Baena a “talented director with impeccable taste and vision.”

CBS has handed a pilot order to Zarna, a multi-camera comedy starring stand-up comedian Zarna Garg. The project, written by Garg and The Big C creator Darlene Hunt, comes from Mindy Kaling‘s Kaling International, Kevin Hart‘s Hartbeat and Warner Bros. Television, where Kaling International is under an overall deal.
Zarna has been on a priority track since landing at CBS for development in September in a competitive situation. It quickly emerged as one of Wbtv’s strongest broadcast prospects this season, giving the indie studio’s its first comedy greenlight at the network for a non-Chuck Lorre comedy in quite some time.
This is CBS’ third pilot order so far this development season, joining single-camera comedy Dmv and light drama Einstein.
Zarna centers on the eponymous heroine Zarna (Garg), a proud immigrant woman who’s been raising her American-born kids on Indian values. But now that they’re getting older,...

Mindy Kaling is in her Michael Scott era.
The actress explained that she relates to The Office character, played by Steve Carell, after welcoming three children during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show on Friday. Kaling is a mother to daughters Katherine and Anne and son Spencer.
Kaling recalled working on the episode in which Scott “was on a child TV show, and they asked him, ‘What do you wanna do when you grow up?’ And he says, ‘I wanna have 100 kids, so I can have 100 friends, and no one can say no to being my friend.’”
Kaling, who was a writer and actor on the NBC sitcom, added that she wrote the episode when she was 25 and “so far from thinking of having kids.
“I thought, ‘Oh, that’s like, so funny and sad that like a grown-up would want to have kids to have friends,’” she explained.

Jenn An, a former contestant on “America’s Next Top Model,” sued Kanye “Ye” West for an alleged incident of sexual assault and strangulation that took place in 2010 on the set for a music video for La Roux’s “In for the Kill.”
The music video was filmed “on or about Sept. 7, 2010” in a suite at the Chelsea Hotel in New York City. An states that West chose her to be one of the female background actors and models, saying, “Give me the Asian girl.” She claims she told the rapper, “I’m not wearing very much,” to which he is said to have replied, “That’s why I chose you.” The suit, as obtained and reviewed by TheWrap, states that she was “only wearing revealing lingerie.”
West is said to have ordered the other background actors and models to leave and
“[began] filming the sexual assault to which he was about to subject Plaintiff.

Jussie Smollett’s conviction in an alleged hate crime hoax was overturned on Thursday by the Illinois Supreme Court.
The “Empire” actor was convicted in December 2021 of five felony counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly staging a hate crime against himself in 2019 and was sentenced to 150 days in county jail, plus 30 months of probation and $130,000 in restitution. This came after the original charges against him were dropped in March 2019, but the case was picked back up when the state conducted an independent inquiry with a special prosecutor. In December 2023, a state appellate court rejected his bid for an appeal and it was ruled that he would have to complete his full sentence, six days of which he served before being freed pending appeal. Earlier this year, the Illinois Supreme Court agreed to hear his appeal.

Created by Jeff & Jackie Schaffer, one of FX's most popular comedy series was "The League," which ran for seven seasons from 2009 to 2015. The raucous sitcom follows a group of friends in Chicago who run a highly competitive fantasy football league every year, creating their own challenges, rewards, and penalties. Along the way, the ensemble endures their own hilarious highs and lows involving romance and family life in between planning their fantasy teams. Throughout the show's run, the group is joined by several memorable guest stars and recurring characters, including the occasional real-life football player getting in on the fun.
Led by a solid ensemble cast of talented comedians, "The League" introduced beloved, crass characters framed against the backdrop of fantasy sports. Since the show's ending in 2015, many of the cast members have gone on to continue their film and television careers, while others haven't reached the same level of success.

Since ABC’s hit series “Scrubs” wrapped its nine-season run in 2010, Hollywood has mostly shied away from comedies set in hospitals — at times a tough place to find laughs — though there have been outliers like Fox and Hulu’s “The Mindy Project,” Warner Bros. and Adult Swim’s absurdist “Childrens Hospital” and HBO’s critically acclaimed “Getting On.”
NBC is the latest to attempt it with “St. Denis Medical,” a new sitcom that blends this challenging setting with a popular format: mockumentary. Can Hollywood find comedy inside a hospital in 2024, especially from a show that focuses on hospital workers’ everyday lives and following a global pandemic?
To try to find out, TheWrap did an exclusive set visit in the last week of filming for the show’s 18-episode first season, which is set to premiere on Nov. 12. TheWrap spoke with the “St. Denis Medical” cast and creators about crafting the comedy series.

For today’s Gen-z kids, The Big Bang Theory and Friends might be some of the shows that they feel are iconic. But long back in the 80s, aired a show that changed the definition of sitcoms and grew a massive fan base across the US.
Yes, we are talking about NBC’s Cheers, which ran successfully from 1982 until its series finale in 1993. Critically acclaimed and loved by many during its original run, the series is one of the best sitcoms.
Cheers is hilarious, intelligent, fast-paced, heartfelt, peopled by unforgettable characters, and consistently good. The story revolves around a Boston bar, owned by Sam Malone (Ted Danson), a former relief pitcher, and has several other main characters, who either work in the bar or visit it regularly.
Decades later after its final run, let’s take a look at where some of the Cheers‘ major cast members are now!

Ever since "The Big Bang Theory" ended back in 2019, fans of the CBS sitcom have frequently wondered if stars Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kunal Nayyar, Simon Helberg, and Kaley Cuoco might ever come back to the roles that made them famous. Some, like Parsons, have — he's played the oldest possible version of Sheldon Cooper on the first spin-off of "The Big Bang Theory," the prequel series "Young Sheldon" — but Cuoco hasn't played Penny Hofstadter since the series finale of the original show. So, what did she tell People Magazine when they asked if she'd be willing to step back into Penny's shoes?
Apparently, Cuoco is totally down to play Penny again. "I spent 12 years playing that role, and it really set off my career," Cuoco told the outlet in an exclusive chat. "I owe a lot to that character, to that show, to [creator] Chuck Lorre," she added. "It was some...

Universal Pictures revealed the new poster for the Drop movie at New York Comic Con today. The new thriller from Blumhouse, directed by Christopher Landon, will open in theaters on April 11, 2025.
Drop is rated PG-13 by the MPA for strong violent content, suicide, some strong language, and sexual references.
First dates are nerve-wracking enough. Going on a first date while an unnamed, unseen troll pings you personal memes that escalate from annoying to homicidal? Blood-chilling.
Director Christopher Landon returns to the thriller genre with the playful, keep-you-guessing intensity he perfected in the Happy Death Day films with this of-the-moment whodunnit where everyone in the vicinity is a suspect… or victim. Drop releases only in theaters on April 11, 2025.
Emmy nominee Meghann Fahy, breakout star of White Lotus and The Perfect Couple, plays Violet, a widowed mother on her first date in years, who arrives at an upscale restaurant where she is relieved that her date, Henry (It Ends with Us’ Brandon Sklenar) is more charming and handsome than she expected. But their chemistry begins to curdle as Violet begins being irritated and then terrorized by a series of anonymous drops to her phone.
She is instructed to tell nobody and follow instructions or the hooded figure she sees on her home security cameras will kill Violet’s young son and babysitting sister. Violet must do exactly as directed or everyone she loves will die.

After season three of Chucky ended, fans were subjected to a painfully long wait as the show’s future was decided. Ultimately, USA/SyFy/Peacock canceled Chucky and the entire horror world shed a bloody tear. Even if you weren’t a fan of the franchise, it’s hard to deny how great it was having a classic horror villain get such a mainstream spotlight. Hell, we even got to see Chucky kill WWE Women’s Champion Liv Morgan. It’s the kind of thing that only works in the ludicrous world of Chucky. And with Season 3 ending off on such a cliffhanger, this cancellation really leaves fans high and dry. But there’s still hope in multiple forms.
Don Manicini mentioned earlier this year that he was prepping another movie involving Chucky and it would “work in tandem with the TV show.” Obviously, with this change of events, I...

It was no small feat to get “Saturday Night Live” off the ground at NBC, and as a result, the cast of “Saturday Night” is pretty huge. In many cases, the actors also look eerily similar to the people they’re playing.
Hitting theaters everywhere on Oct. 11 after a limited theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles, Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” tells the story of the 90 minutes right before the first-ever episode of “SNL.” It’s chaotic and at the time, even Lorne Michaels couldn’t explain what the show was going to be.
Below, you’ll find the cast of “Saturday Night” alongside what their real-life counterparts looked like back then.

Lorne Michaels is the creator and, to this day, producer of “Saturday Night Live.” He’s played in “Saturday Night” by Gabriel Labelle, who had his breakout role in Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans.

The adult-animated comedy-horror series Velma will not be returning for a third season, as Max has given the show the boot. In other words, Velma has been officially canceled.
Here's an official statement from Max about the show's cancellation via Variety:
Over the past two seasons, Mindy [Kaling] and Charlie [Grandy] have created an incredibly fun and fresh world within the iconic whodunit franchise. While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we thank them for their compelling coming-of-age storytelling, unrivaled clues, and hilarious hijinks.
Charlie Grandy developed and created Velma. The show was based on the character Velma Dinkley from the Scooby-Doo franchise, and it told Velma's origin story, focusing on her life before she became part of the Mystery Inc. gang. The other human members that would eventually make up Mystery Inc. were also in the show, such as Fred, Shaggy (Norville), and Daphne.

Most audiences would recognize Max Minghella from his stellar turn in Hulu’s “Handmaid’s Tale” or “The Mindy Project” or any number of acting gigs in film and TV. But he’s also a writer/producer/director, and with “Shell,” he not only makes his sophomore directorial feature effort, he also reunites with “Tale” topliner Elisabeth Moss.
Moss stars as Samantha, an actor who was on a hit TV show when she was younger, but now, a little bit older, she loses out on roles she is perfect for to younger, fitter actors despite her talent. She’s vulnerable and her agents tell her to try the Shell clinic, which promises eternal youth and beauty. The treatment works and she is befriended by Shell founder Zoe (Kate Hudson). But weird, gross stuff starts to happen with Sam’s skin, people start disappearing and the authorities and thugs both start chasing Sam.

The star, who plays Jesus Christ in the historical drama based on the New Testament of the Bible, told TheWrap that booking “The Chosen” saved his life. About six years ago, the actor said that he was at his lowest point and knew that something had to change. It was then that he committed his life to his faith, and the wheels started to spin again.

The season premiered weeks ago on ABC and introduced a change to the format. Instead of one contestant playing the game, there are two.
In addition, it’s a pair of celebrity contestants who are typically good friends, colleagues, or family members, such as Jack and Kelly Osbourne.
While previous Millionaire formats had everyday contestants playing the game to leave with some significant money, the celebrity pairs are playing for money that goes to charities of their choice.
During the Wednesday, August 14 episode, viewers saw another pair of celebs attempt to climb up the board and win the $1 million.

One of the two teams did just that, which was the first time it had happened on the game show under the new team format.
