The “Big Bang Theory” spinoff series in the works at Max has found its first three cast members.
Variety has learned from sources that Brian Posehn, Lauren Lapkus, and Kevin Sussman will all star in the potential show, which was originally announced as being in development at Max back in April 2023. Exact plot details remain under wraps but all three actors would reprise their roles from the original series.
The show remains in development and has not been greenlit to series at this time, with Posehn, Sussman, and Lapkus currently under talent holding deals. “Big Bang Theory” co-creator Chuck Lorre is executive producing the new project via Chuck Lorre Productions, with Lorre currently under an overall deal with series studio Warner Bros. Television.
Reps for Wbtv and Max declined to comment.

Sony Pictures Television is widening the creative circle — by a lot — in its comedy division.
The studio has signed first-look deals with nine writers and comics — Scott Aukerman, Karen Chee, Shaun Diston, Chris Garcia, Chris Gethard, Lisa Gilroy, Lacey Jeka, Julie Klausner and Alok Vaid-Menon. They’ll all work on developing new comedy series projects and potentially collaborate with other writers and producers who have deals at Sony.
Lauren Stein, head of creative at Sony Pictures TV, and Colin Davis, executive vp comedy development, said the deals are part of an effort at the studio to bring in what Davis calls a “spectrum of sensibilities” to comedy development.
“The list is a collective of a different creators and multihyphenates that we believe each have unique voices and a hit show in them,” Davis said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “They really represent the comedy community at large, and...

Google a list of the all-time best Saturday Night Live hosts, and you’ll find a surprising number of people who you’d never guess were funny in the first place.
I mean, before SNL, who knew athletes Charles Barkley and Peyton Manning were hilarious? Who watched Nsync videos and predicted that Justin Timberlake had “Dick in a Box” in him? Billie Eilish? Chance the Rapper? Anyone have news anchor Brian Williams on their funny bingo card?
As the show embarks on its landmark 50th season, here are five more suggestions for out-of-the-box SNL hosts who just might knock it out of the park…
1 Tony Hawk
Hawk has been quietly comedy-adjacent for years, appearing in College Humor sketches, skateboarding in a fat suit in a Jackass movie and lending his voice to The Simpsons.

Ten years ago this week, “Weird Al” Yankovic’s Mandatory Fun became the first comedy album to top the Billboard album chart since Allan Sherman’s My Son, the Nut in August 1963. The years following that triumph have been a busy time for Yankovic, marked by multiple world tours, a stint as the bandleader on Comedy Bang! Bang!, the recording of “The Hamilton Polka,” and the release of Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, a brilliantly twisted biopic starring Daniel Radcliffe that racked up many awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie.

Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker – which was pulled from TIFF in 2022 over “rights issues” — starts a theatrical debut today at the IFC Center, moving to LA’s Landmark’s Nuart next weekend and expanding thereafter with about 85 booking so far — a nice outcome for the mixed-media coming-of-age dark superhero parody that “had gone into into hibernation mode” until Outfest LA Film Festival, said Frank Jaffe, whose distribution company Altered Innocence acquired it then. It’s U.S premiere garnered a Special Mention in the North American Narrative Feature Competition.
Co-written by Drew and Bri LeRose, the film is a reimagining the origin story of iconic Batman villain The Joker, starring Drew as painfully unfunny aspiring clown and closeted trans girl grappling with her gender identity while unsuccessfully attempting to join the ranks of Gotham City’s sole comedy program, in a world where comedy has been outlawed. If you're just waking up to the saga of "The People's Joker," it starts out the way most comic book characters do — with a tragic origin story. After working as an editor for shows like "On Camera," "Comedy Bang! Bang!," and earning a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for "Who is America?," Vera Drew successfully crowdfunded her fair use feature directorial debut, in which she utilizes the iconography of arguably one the most recognizable DC Comics world — Batman and the Joker — to tell a queer, autobiographical coming-of-age Joker origin story that doubles as a massive middle finger to Lorne Michaels and the conventional, corporate comedy landscape. "The People's Joker" enjoyed a single screening at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival before it was pulled due to "rights issues."

Typically, saying you're more excited about something other than the new Lady Gaga project is fair grounds for having your queer card taken away, but an exception can be made in the case of "The People's Joker." Indeed, as intrigued as I am to watch Gaga's Harley Quinn sing and dance her way through a toxic romance with Joaquin Phoenix's Clown Prince of Crime in Todd Phillips' "Joker: Folie à Deux" (a sentence I couldn't have imagined writing after watching Phillips' original Scorsesean DC drama for the first time back in 2019), it's Vera Drew's trans-coming-of-age DC Comics superhero parody that has my current attention.
Drew, similar to her fellow trans comedienne Harper Steele (the subject of Will Ferrell's acclaimed upcoming Netflix documentary "Will & Harper"), has quietly worked on some of the more memorable and daring comedic offerings of the past decade. In addition to editing Scott Aukerman...

When it comes to guest appearances on the new "Frasier" revival, all the talk has been about returning stars from the original series. The 10–episode reboot show has so far seen the return of Frasier's ex-wife, former "Cheers" co-star, and frequent "Frasier" guest star Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth). Soon we'll also see the return of Peri Gilpin, who played the doctor's radio show producer, Roz, in the original series. Alas, we won't be treated to a guest appearance by David Hyde Pierce's Niles after the actor turned down the opportunity to return for the new show.
I would say it's all been exciting stuff, but really it's been vaguely amusing stuff that feels at once comfortable and uncanny — like we're watching an alternate reality version of "Frasier" written by super-fans that's not as good as the original. Lilith's return certainly provided a shot of nostalgia but also just reminded us...

Years before the current SAG-AFTRA strike shut down productions in Hollywood, Deadpool called out the low pay that members of the Screen Actors Guild receive from film productions. Filming on the third Deadpool movie has been halted because of the actors' strike, but Deadpool and Spider-Man nearly derailed another motion picture based on the Merc with a Mouth.
Wade and Peter make their way to Hollywood in 2016’s Spider-Man/Deadpool #6 by Scott Aukerman and Reilly Brown. A mysterious new figure calling himself the Salmon Stunt Man approaches Deadpool and informs him that a movie about him is in the works. Worried about how the film will turn out and wanting to offer his input, Deadpool, grabs his “best friend” Spider-Man and they head out to Los Angeles. After a fight with the Salmon Stunt Man, the movie comes out and Wade learns the harsh reality of what being paid “SAG scale” really means.

The world recently lost a titan of comedy when Paul Reubens sadly passed away at the age of 70, and it's worth revisiting his funniest comedic cameos. Best known for his character of Pee-Wee Herman, Reubens was a hilarious writer and performer who brought his unique sensibility to any project that was lucky enough to include him. While he will always be remembered for his own projects like Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and Pee-Wee's Playhouse, Reubens also lent his talents to other projects through cameos.
Reubens would often appear in one-scene roles in feature films, or as a guest actor on one episode of a sitcom and completely steal the scene, if not the entire episode or movie. He was an extremely talented person who left his mark wherever he went. Here are Paul Reubens' 10 funniest cameos.

Everyone seems to have a personal story about Paul Reubens, aka Pee-wee Herman. And those stories seem always to revolve around birthdays. I didn’t know Reubens, but apparently half of the people on my Facebook timeline did, because they’re all sharing memories about the lengths Reubens would go to every year to celebrate their big day.
“He loved to make your birthday special,” wrote Joel Stillerman, the former MTV and AMC exec who played a role in helping “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” get made, and later worked with him on the film “Blow.” “The texts, memes, videos and gifs would start in the morning and continue all day until you were in tears, and disbelief that anyone could pull this off. Because you knew that it wasn’t just you.”
Quite honestly, seeing the number of people just on my social media timeline who have a similar Paul Reubens story...

“I guess you guys aren’t ready for that yet,” so says Marty McFly—he of the far-off future of the 1980s—after performing a raucous, Chuck-Berry-presaging guitar solo in front of crowd of Bobby sox era teens in 1955, “But your kids are gonna love it.”

We may live in a post-truth world, but most viewers still settle in to watch documentaries with the assumption that what we’re going to be treated to is at least some version of “truth.” Surely, we think, “truth” is what most documentary filmmakers aspire to.
Perhaps owing to a background that’s in comedy — Lady Dynamite, Comedy Bang! Bang! — rather than nonfiction, Ben Berman doesn’t operate on that level. Berman, who made his documentary debut with 2019’s Sundance entry The Amazing Johnathan Documentary, is more interested in the lengths that people go to avoid the truth. He isn’t angry at liars — he’s not Alex Gibney — so much as he is fascinated with the prevarication itself, not always the motivation for it or the reality behind it.

Adam Scott never wanted to be anything other than an actor. He has been devoted to his craft ever since his days of appearing in plays in high school. His first notable professional gig was playing a strung-out deliverer of exposition in the not-at-all-remembered 1994 MTV series "Dead at 21," one of the most 1990s things ever. A few years later, Scott appeared in the final theatrically released "Hellraiser" movie, "Hellraiser: Bloodline" in which he played a sweaty, immortal French aristocrat. That same year, he played the unnamed helmsman of the U.S.S. Defiant in "Star Trek: First Contact." Incidentally, his "Star Trek" character has recently shown up in the video game "Star Trek: Timelines" where he was named Helsman Wyatt, presumably after Ben Wyatt, Scott's character on "Parks and Recreation."

Mel Brooks is one of the few remaining living legends in pop culture to have survived so many generational shifts. He started as a comedy writer in the earliest days of television, helped shape and transform modern movie humor, and eventually ended up creating a sea change on Broadway as well with an adaptation of "The Producers," one of his first movies. And now, more than seven full decades after he started in TV, Brooks is back on the small screen, as glimpsed in the opening of the Hulu limited series "History of the World, Part II." But true to form, the Brooks we get a glimpse of is a joke in and of itself: it's a very "swole" Brooks (Aka a bodybuilder with a de-aged version of Brooks' face slapped in front of his own visage). It's a microcosm of this sketch series, as shameless and crass and incredibly funny as Brooks' own work.

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. Altered Innocence will release “The People’s Joker” in theaters on April 5, 2024.
Though it was pulled from subsequent screenings, the buzzy Midnight Madness premiere of “The People’s Joker” at the Toronto International Film Festival will not be its last. Coming out as a bold filmmaker with a fearless voice, prolific alt comedy editor Vera Drew’s mixed media dystopia is a Fiercely original and deeply personal, it’s too damn good not to be seen.
Though the film is steeped in the iconography of DC Comics characters like Batman, Penguin, and Joker, “The People’s Joker” takes more shots at “Saturday Night Live” and Lorne Michaels than it does at the Batverse. Conspicuous consumption gets literal in “The Menu,” Searchlight Pictures’s upcoming horror-satire film starring Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, and an (elegantly printed) list of supporting actors offering complimentary tasting notes. A new trailer dropped Wednesday morning.
The eat-the-rich movie is directed by Mark Mylod, whose recent work includes episodes of “Succession,” “Shameless,” and “Game of Thrones” (and helped introduce many of us to Sacha Baron Cohen with “Ali G Indahouse”), and written by Will Tracy and Seth Reiss (a writer for “Late Night with Seth Meyes” and “Comedy Bang! Bang!”) With such people on board, droll and urbane line readings are clearly fresh and in season. An awards push for original screenplay seems like a natural.
Hoult plays a foodie fanboy who takes Taylor-Joy to an impossible-to-get dining experience on a private island, where Fiennes is head chef and runs a kitchen that seems a little too loyal to him.

Kid Cudi paid tribute to late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain during his “Saturday Night Live” performances, rocking a fuzzy green cardigan and floral dress in true “Come As You Are” spirit.
Cudi first performed his song “Tequila Shots” and donned a green cardigan reminiscent of the one Cobain wore during Nirvana’s famous 1993 MTV Unplugged show. Cudi also paid homage to “SNL” legend Chris Farley in the look, sporting a t-shirt featuring the late comedian, who died of a drug overdose at age 33 in 1997. Cudi later posted on Twitter that the cardigan was from elusive streetwear brand Cactus Plant Flea Market.
The tribute continued in his second performance, which featured the song “Sad People.” Cudi rocked an Off-White floral dress custom made by Virgil Abloh, causing many fans to draw comparisons to a similarly-patterned dress Cobain was famously photographed in. The white, wide-skirted spaghetti strap ensemble featured a flower print...

Update 2/25: Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw and Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films have issued a statement about the end of The Twilight Zone series.
We greatly enjoyed our time working on The Twilight Zone — particularly when the real world around us often felt more and more like another dimension. We cherished the opportunity to collaborate with so many talented writers, actors and crewmembers. After 20 unique episodes, we have told the stories that we wanted to tell, and CBS All Access was gracious in their understanding of our decision. It was an honor and a privilege to bring audiences a modern re-imagining of Rod Serling’s iconic creation.
Previous 2/24: The second season of the reboot of The Twilight Zone was submitted for your approval, to borrow the famous phrase of original sci-fi creator Rod Serling. Apparently, there wasn’t enough approval, as the CBS All Access show won’t continue...

It’s morning in Australia which means Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun, Netflix’s new sketch comedy series, has been out for more than a day when we meet the show’s stars over Zoom. The Aussie comedians who comprise the troupe Aunty Donna—Broden Kelly, Mark Samual Bonanno, and Zachary Ruane—are already fielding scathing reviews.
“My mum didn’t care for the ‘Morning Brown’ song,” says Ruane, referring to a rousing musical number—about morning coffee that unfurls into a string of raunchy sexcapades—that kicks off episode two. “I called her on the night of release. I was so proud, so excited. I was like, ‘What’d you think?’ And she was like, ‘That coffee song was a bit much.’”
Although “Morning Brown” is one of the more memorable (good luck not humming it when you make your coffee after watching it) and delightfully unhinged sketches in season one,...

Pluto TV, the ad-supported streaming service owned by ViacomCBS, has added four new channels derived from AMC Networks programming, including The Walking Dead en Español.
Effective Friday, the 22-million-plus active viewers of Pluto will get access to the Spanish-language Twd offering, which features early seasons of the original series as well as spinoff Fear the Walking Dead. Also on tap are Stories By AMC (including past seasons of Twd), Slightly Off By IFC and All Reality We TV. Select programming from the four will also be made available on demand via Pluto.
Pluto’s approach to streaming has been to present viewers with an experience resembling the traditional television one, with live feeds, a programming grid and a large menu of channels. With an editorial team, it creates curated versions of programming available elsewhere, enabling it to largely steer clear of friction with pay-tv operators paying companies like ViacomCBS to carry linear networks.

“Comedy Bang! Bang!” is ending after five seasons on IFC. The series started as a podcast hosted by Scott Aukerman and Reggie Watts. After it proved to be incredibly popular, IFC turned it into a series, featuring talk show-like segments and bizarre, surreal comedy. Aukerman broke the news on Twitter. “We’ve had a great run, and I couldn’t be more proud of the show. We have 10 final episodes premiering in October, and a great 2-part finale,” he wrote. Watts was the co-host and bandleader for most of the series, but departed in the middle of Season 4 to become the bandleader.
