- Sheriff Longmire runs a small department in rural Wyoming. When the body of a man is found in the woods the investigation leads to tension between Longmire and the local Indian Reservation, as well as between Longmire and his Indian friend who runs a local bar.—kamas716
- Sheriff Walt Longmire has mourned the death of his wife for a year. He has delegated most police duties to deputies Branch Connaly and Archie "The Ferg" Ferguson. Longmire's adult daughter Cady is concerned about her father. Victoria "Vic" Moretti is a transplanted Philadelphia homicide detective who arrived in Wyoming six months prior and is now one of Walt's deputies, and Walt's longtime friend Henry Standing Bear assists with any dealings with the local Indian reservation. The sheriff's office investigates a dead sheep, but uncovers a murder victim as well who is identified as high school teacher Grant Parkford from Wheatland. The murder weapon was an unusual Sharps rifle. He checks with the local gun dealer and finds that he sold three Sharps rifle to Indians who live on the nearby reservation. Walt is rebuffed when he tries to track them down. The tribal police are angry at him for getting their chief incarcerated. When Walt goes to notify the victim's wife Susan of his death, she says he told her he would be at the university in Laramie. What was he doing in Durant? Walt returns home only to be told by his deputy Branch that Grant had been in to see him a few days earlier. He was trying to help a woman find her missing 16-year-old daughter. Branch pulls out a photo of the girl. With the help of Henry, he sneaks back onto the reservation and meets the girl's Native American mother, May Stillwater. She admits that she and Grant were lovers in the past and had a daughter Lilly. Vic turns up a pair of pants near the crime scene. From the buckle, Walt knows that they belong to someone at the 10-Point Ranch. He and Vic take the pants to the ranch and match them up to the owner. He admits he had been visiting an RV that was a mobile brothel. He was kicked out without his pants. The RV location is available to local men by asking an Indian youth who works for Henry at the local bar. He agrees to meet Walt at an isolated cabin. As Walt questions him, a sniper picks him off. Walt, knowing how long it takes to reload the Sharps rifle, is able to escape the cabin and chase the shooter down in his truck. The RV is located and Lilly, who was one of the prostitutes, is released to her mother.—Garon Smith
