It’s time to return to the Dreaming with Wednesday's launch of The Sandman Universe from DC’s Vertigo imprint.

Throughout the past decade, many have tried to bring comic book writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Pia Guerra's epic Y: The Last Man series to screen. Back in 2009, New Line Cinema had plans to adapt the sci-fi story for the silver screen with DJ Caruso set to direct and Shia Labeouf attached to star (Oh my God, no. Just no). When that plan fell through, and rights to the... Read More...

An adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra‘s sixty-issue comic book series Y: The Last Man has been in the works for years – first as a movie and then, thankfully, as a TV show, which is a much better fit for the sprawling tale. But the show has been in the works at FX […]

A television adaptation of Y: The Last Man is still on its way. The small screen take on Brian K. Synopsis: “Y” is none other than unemployed escape artist Yorick Brown (his father was a Shakespeare buff), and he’s seemingly the only male human left alive after a mysterious plague kills all Y-chromosome carriers on earth. But why are he and his faithful companion, the often testy male monkey Ampersand, still alive? He sets out to find the answer (and his girlfriend), while running from angry female Republicans (now running the government), Amazon wannabes that include his own sister (seemingly brainwashed), and other threats.
My Background:
As a reader of comics I adore Brian K Vaughan’s work. So it makes no sense that it took me this long to finally start this series. When I began this blog series I mentioned how Saga brought my comic book reading to another level. So when...

Director D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) keeps himself busy these days. He helmed and co-wrote last fall’s The Disappointment Room, which apparently lived up to its title, only to turn around and direct this weekend’s xXx: Return of Xander Cage just a few months later. He’s already attached to get behind the camera for G.I. Joe 3 and the horror thriller Selling Time, but that’s not all. He’s also, once again, eyeing the long-promised comic book adaptation Y: The Last Man, which looks to find life on the small screen.
While there have been multiple attempts to bring Brian K. Vaughan’s acclaimed graphic novel series to life, including 10 Cloverfield Lane‘s Dan Trachtenbergs’s try back in 2013, Caruso was perhaps the closest to bringing it to fruition, and he’s remained loosely attached ever since.

A live-action adaptation of Y: The Last Man has been a long time coming, but another promising update has now helped bring it one step closer to becoming a reality. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Green has been hired as the showrunner on the FX series, which will adapt Brian K. Vaughan’s critically acclaimed comic book series.
Green has also been tapped to co-write Y: The Last Man‘s script, and given his past work, that’s no bad thing. He recently served as a writer on Starz’s upcoming American Gods, not to mention highly anticipated blockbusters like Logan and Blade Runner 2049. Furthermore, he’s previously written for shows like Smallville and Gotham, while feature credits include Green Lantern and Alien: Covenant. That’s one hell of a resume, and as a result, it doesn’t feel too presumptuous to say that Y: The Last Man is in very good hands.

Michael Green will serve as showrunner on FX's Y: The Last Man adaptation and will write the script for the pilot alongside comic book creator Brian K. Vaughan and Bryan Fuller. First launched in 2002, the Vertigo comic book series follows Yurick Brown, the last man on Earth, as he searches for answers regarding a mysterious illness that only targeted those with a Y-chromosome. With Green's addition perhaps FX is ready to begin devlopment on the project in earnest. Could we soon be receiving casting news? Stay tuned to Cbm for further updates. If you're into comic books and were alive in the early 2000s, you'll remember that people couldn't stop talking about Y: The Last Man. That was for good reason: it's one of the best comics ever written, and Hollywood has been trying to crack a film adaptation ever since it debuted. After a bunch of directors flirted with the property and came close to landing on a take they liked, the project moved to FX last year. Now the network has finally found a showrunner they think will be able to shepherd the property across the finish line.
THR reports that Michael Green, the man who is currently co-showrunning Neil Gaiman's upcoming series American Gods at Starz, will be the one bringing Y: The Last Man to life. Hulu is getting into the Marvel business: The streaming platform is developing an adaptation of Marvel title Runaways, the fan-favorite comic series created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, Deadline first reported. Runaways is in development at Hulu but, contrary to reports elsewhere, does not yet have a series order, a source tells HitFix. Runaways is about a group of superpowered teens who learn that their parents are part of an evil crime organization. Shortly after the news broke, Schwartz tweeted out his enthusiasm to be aboard the Vaughan-based project. Hulu Orders ‘Marvel’s Runaways’ — Dream project. The lasting legacy of Marvel Studios may be that practically every other studio has jumped on the idea of an interconnected cinematic universe, and now Hasbro is getting in on that action by creating its own writers room to plan out film adaptations of toys like G.I. Following the first reports that a television adaptation of the popular graphic novel Y: The Last Man would be coming to FX, the network this weekend confirmed that it’s circling the last potential writers to partner with Brian K. Vaughan as collaborators for the series.
Vaughan created the original graphic novel, along with artist Pia Guerra, which ran from 2002 through 2008 and detailed the adventures of Yorick Brown and his pet capuchin monkey Ampersand as they try to survive the fallout of an incident which appeared to have killed every male on the planet except them.

Brian K. Vaughan’s creator-owned content is not only voluminous but high quality, as evidenced by critical praise and accolades. He mostly writes science fiction with healthy doses of drama and social/political commentary.

Will Forte soon won't be the only last man on Earth on television. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra's popular comic Y: The Last Man is being developed into a series by FX.
Created in 2002, the comic follows Yorick Brown, a young escape artist with a pet monkey, who becomes the last male mammal on Earth thanks to a prolific plague that wipes out all other Y-chromosome creatures.
The comic ran until 2008, with a total of 60 issues. It quickly became a hit, winning three Eisner Awards for Best Writer, Best Artist, and Best Continuing Series.
For years, the comic was mired in plans for a feature film franchise, jumping from one producer to another.
FX is currently looking for a writer and director to help develop the series.

After years in the wilderness that is film development trying to find that elusive greenlight, the rights to an adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn’s beloved graphic novel series Y: The Last Man reverted to the writer. And he’s now part of an effort to find a new home for the story on screen – TV screens. The comic book series, created by Vaughn and Pia Guerra, focuses on Yorick Brown, an amateur escape artist who has become the lone male human survivor after a mysterious plague killed off everyone else with a Y chromosome — including all male animals. Except, that is, for his pet capuchin monkey, Ampersand, who follows him around like Ross's Marcel, but in a much friendlier, less irritating way. FX is developing a ongoing TV series adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan's beloved sci-fi comic "Y: The Last Man".
The 60-issue comic follows young amateur escape artist Yorick Brown and his pet monkey Ampersand, the last two men on Earth. Something simultaneously kills every mammal on Earth possessing a Y chromosome - including embryos, fertilized eggs, and even sperm.
Society is plunged into chaos as infrastructures collapse and the surviving women everywhere try to cope with the loss of the men. Yorick goes on a mission to find his girlfriend Beth, who was on vacation in Australia.
Attempts have been made for years to adapt the property as a movie. DJ Caruso ("Disturbia"), Louis Leterrier ("The Incredible Hulk") and Dan Trachtenberg were previously attached as directors while Shia Labeouf and Alicia Keys were linked as stars to earlier versions.

War-torn Iraq is seen through the eyes of lions escaped from the Baghdad Zoo. These are just some of the tales spun by Brian K. Vaughan, one of the most compelling, creative, thought-provoking writers in comic books today. Issue #4 of Vaughan’s “We Stand On Guard” hits comic book store shelves today. The mini-series imagines a war between the U.S. and Canada about a century into the future. It centers on 18-year-old Canadian Amber, who’s survived on the run for 12 years when her older brother is captured by the American army. The series will run for a total of six issues, though Vaughan told HitFix that he and artist Steve Skroce “are already talking about what we’re gonna work on next.

When you ask what are some of the most notable names in comics today there is a very strong chance that both Brian K. Vaughn (Y: The Last Man, Saga, Runaways) and Marcos Martin (Batgirl: Year One, Doctor Strange: The Oath, Breach) will both come up. It is that fact that makes what they are doing with The Private Eye so intriguing. Not only is it an independent book released solely online, but also it has been released through a DRM-Free pay what you want format. All that is well and good but at the end of the day what really matters is the quality of the book, and of course Vaughn and Martin do not disappoint.

Back in January of 2013, we learned that Dan Trachtenberg, one of the hosts of Totally Rad Show and director of the awesome short film Portal: No Escape, had taken over the long-gestating adaptation of the comic book Y: The Last Man. And while there were hints later that summer from producer David S. Goyer that the film might begin filming this year, instead we have much worse news. Trachtenberg recently spoke to SlashFilm and revealed that the project is dead again, and the rights to the comic have reverted back to creators Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra and there's no telling if a film will ever happen. Read on! Here's confirmation from Dan Trachtenberg answering a fan's question on Twitter: Not happening. But it's in trusted hands (the creators). Rt @AndyWagnerActor: Any updates on your Y:tlm screen adaptation? #bigfan— Dan Trachtenberg (@DannyTRS) September 25, 2014 But he spoke more about the...

Well, this is not how I wanted to start my Friday. It appears that the long-rumored big screen adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra.s amazing comic book series Y: The Last Man is offically dead. Director Dan Trachtenberg confirmed the terrible news on Twitter, and then elaborated on what his plans were for the story over at /Film. While the filmmaker didn.t reveal what officially killed the project (he would only say it wasn.t the usual suspects of money, script issues, or casting that did the film in), he did talk at length about his vision for bringing Yorick and Ampersand.s adventure to the big screen. Reading about it is only going to make you sadder it didn.t happen. Not happening. But it's in trusted hands (the creators). Rt @AndyWagnerActor: Any updates on your Y:tlm screen adaptation? #bigfan. Remember earlier this year when Brian K. Vaughan said the movie rights to his Y: The Last Man comics would revert back to him and co-creator Pia Guerra if New Line and director Dan Trachtenberg didn't start production soon on the planned adaptation? Well, that's exactly what has happened. A fan recently asked Trachtenberg about the project on Twitter, and he says the movie is officially dead. Not happening. Brian K Vaughan and Pia Guerra are back in control of the rights to their Vertigo comics series after New Line Cinema failed to progress on its planned adaptation.

Dan Trachtenberg - who was attached to direct the project - revealed the news on Twitter.
Vaughan had previously said that he believed the rights may revert to him and Guerra.
The comic centred around a mysterious event that kills all male mammals on the planet.
The lone surviving man - Yorick - sets off on an epic journey with his monkey Ampersand to find his girlfriend, who he lost contact with during the cataclysm.
Trachtenberg directed the short fan film Portal: No Escape.

Despite having the rights to the property for a decade and a director in place for over a year, New Line has truly struggled with getting an adaptation of the cult Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra comic book Y: The Last Man off the ground. Back in January, we learned that the studio was at risk of losing the rights to the creators if cameras didn’t start rolling quickly… and now the gauntlet has finally fallen. The Y: The Last Man film is officially dead in the water.
Director Dan Trachtenberg (Portal: No Escape) broke the sad news himself when asked directly by a fan about the project’s progress. His statement was very brief and matter-of-fact, but absolutely clear:

A lot of the time when a movie project fails to come to fruition, fans never really get to hear confirmation that the dream is dead, and are instead left to assume so after years of silence. In the case of comic book adaptations, however, there’s often a time limit on how long a film studio has to make use of the title’s rights before reverting back to the original owners (as was the case with Fox’s planned Daredevil reboot, failing to get off the ground in time to prevent the rights returning to Marvel).
It seems a similar situation has arisen with Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s comic book series Y: The Last ...

The long gestating film adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan's acclaimed comic "Y: The Last Man" is, once again, dead in a ditch. At last report filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg had signed on to helm the film early last year.
Then... nothing. Today, Trachtenberg confirmed to Slashfilm that the film version is dead with the rights having reverted back to Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra several months ago. Here's his lengthy answer:
"The rights reverted back to Brian quite a few months ago. I had such a great time working on that project and am truly sad the things we were cooking up can no longer happen. Like everyone else who's a fan of the series I had always wished it either remain in its comic book form. Or, if it must be made, a TV series would be the only thing that would suffice.

We have a look at some of the more obscure comic book movie ideas which nearly made it to the big screen…
We've recently been investigating the pile of nearly-made-its in the ever-growing world of cinematic comic book adaptations. You could be forgiven for thinking Hollywood will strap wads of cash to any old comic book writer who stumbles past their door, but so far we’ve written approximately 5,000 words that say otherwise.
First, we delved into DC’s chequered past and found heaps of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman projects that we’ll sadly never get to see (and some other projects we’re quite glad we’ll never have to sit through). We then did the same for Marvel, unearthing plans for a Paul McCartney Silver Surfer rock opera, James Cameron’s bizarre Spider-Man script ideas and an amazingly-cast Dazzler animation from the 1980s.

On Saturday, the publishers and creators of Boom! Studios assembled for a panel in which they discussed Boom!’s founding and some fun stories from its early days as well as its vision going into its ten year anniversary. There were a few announcements for some potentially groundbreaking projects from creators you may recognize. The panelists were Boom! founder/CEO Ross Richie, publisher Filip Sablik, editor-in-chief Matt Gagnon, and writers Mark Waid (Irredeemable), Marguerite Bennett (Sleepy Hollow), and James Tynion IV (The Woods). Frank Cho (Liberty Meadows) made a surprise appearance, and other creators showed up via pre-recorded video.
Ross Richie opened up the panel by talking about how he founded Boom! in his own bedroom with prompting from comics veteran Keith Giffen (Justice League International, Annihilation) based on the principle of partnership between a company and its creators. Publisher Filip Sablik said that over the past year, Boom! has...

John Goodman is in talks to star in upcoming thriller Valencia.
Dan Trachtenberg will direct the film, produced by Bad Robot and Insurge Pictures, a division of Paramount which distributes "micro-budget" projects.
The film is said to take place mostly in an underground cellar, following a young girl who loses consciousness in a car accident.
The girl - who is yet to be cast - awakes in the cellar with a mysterious man (Goodman), who tells her that the world has been devastated by a nuclear attack.
Goodman, perhaps best known for his roles in Roseanne and Argo, has worked with Paramount in the past, most recently voicing a Transformer in Transformers: Age of Extinction.

If you haven't heard, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg And James Weaver are working on a live-action adaptation of Steve Dillon and Garth Eniss' Preacher for AMC. However, had that deal fell through, they would've turned their attention to makng a live-action tv series from Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's Y: The Last Man. While speaking to Collider, Goldberg stated, "Y: The Last Man as a feature is ludicrous. It’s perfectly made to be a TV show." However, Weaver adds that the script for the "Y" movie was pretty good, "I want to say…I read a lot of scripts, so I’m going to give a little bit of a caveat, but I feel like I read Y, and it’s a very good feature script.” Goldberg goes on to say that had their Preacher television series not been given the green light, attention would have turned...

Dan Trachtenberg is taking the director's chair on a microbudget thriller titled Valencia , TheWrap reports. Trachtenberg, who has worked until now as a commercials director, was responsible for the short fan film Portal: No Escape , released online in 2011. Valencia was originally scripted by Josh Campbell and Matt Steucken with Dan Casey having recently provided a rewrite. It follows a girl who, after losing consciousness in a car accident, wakes up in an underground cellar with a strange woman who tells her that the outside world has perished in a nuclear attack. Trachtenberg was also named last year as the director of New Line's planned adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra's acclaimed comic book series Y: The Last Man . Entertainment Geekly is a weekly column that examines pop culture through a geek lens and simultaneously examines contemporary geek culture through a pop lens. So many lenses! This week there are two columns inspired by True Detective, partially because True Detective was a thought-provoking TV show which deserves a significant amount of thoughtful analysis, but mainly because I missed a column last week. Today: A consideration of where the show’s ending fits into the pantheon. Tomorrow: A meditation on the show’s meaning, or lack thereof. Spoilers follow.
True Detective only ran for eight episodes, but the final episode carried series-finale weight and expectation.
