Twenty years ago, John Magaro was an aspiring actor who had just moved to New York when he got a call about being a background actor in Munich, Steven Spielberg‘s historical drama about the 1972 Munich Olympics hostage crisis.
“Mainly it was sitting around in like a community center in Brooklyn, and then the ADs come in and they’re like, ‘Hey, you, you, you come over here.’ We’re walking on the street, walk across the street, past Eric Bana, and don’t f— it up. And that was my start. You can see my younger version of myself walking across the street from Eric Bana,” Magaro tells Gold Derby. “Eric Bana and I ended up working together on this movie that a lot of people haven’t seen called The Finest Hours, this Disney movie, and I never mentioned that [to him]. Geostorm was a critical and commercial bomb, losing $71.6 million, with 60% of the film re-written and re-shot. Director Dean Devlin has expressed interest in a sequel or director's cut, despite being replaced during production. Gerard Butler's recent success in disaster movies, like Greenland and its upcoming sequel, and the recent box office success of Twisters could further redeem the genre after Geostorm's failure.
As Gerard Butler forges ahead in the genre with a different property, Dean Devlin is candidly reflecting on his experience with Geostorm. Co-written, co-produced and directed by Devlin, frequent collaborator of Independence Day's Roland Emmerich, the 2017 movie is set in a world in which climate-controlling satellites have been created to combat a series of catastrophic natural disasters, only for a saboteur to get access to it and unleash mayhem. Chris Pine took over the iconic role of Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 movie Star Trek. This was the reboot of the original series created under the vision of Gene Roddenberry. Pine’s performance was praised by the public so much that he returned to the character for Star Trek Beyond (2016) and Into Darkness (2013). About eight years ago, a follow-up movie was ordered in response to its enormous popularity.

However, there is still little to no knowledge regarding its development. On this topic, Chris Pine responded to certain queries in a past interview that also raised a significant Star Trek problem. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we talk about the best Chris – Chris Pine of course! Our B-Sides include Small Town Saturday Night, People Like Us, The Finest Hours, Outlaw King, All The Old Knives, and Poolman. It’s a packed episode! And it’s just Conor and I, ripping it up like the old days.
A lot of the conversation revolves around how charming Pine is. There’s also discussion of that underwhelming ending of The Finest Hours, what about Small Town Saturday Night resonates with young filmmakers, the brave opening of Outlaw King, the old-fashioned crackle of All The Old Knives (and that incredible restaurant location), and the lackluster direction of People Like Us.

Victoria Justice, best known for her starring role on Nickelodeon’s “Victorious,” recently said on SiriusXM’s “Hits 1 LA with Tony Fly and Symon” while promoting her new single “Raw” that her upcoming role in the movie “Depravity” required her to film her first sex scene. The experience was “uncomfortable” but the crew pulled it off with “taste.”
“My first day on set I had my first ever sex scene. I’m like, ‘Really, guys? We’re gonna schedule this for the first day? Cool. Thanks for that,'” Justice said. “It is uncomfortable. I was actually very nervous about it and totally anxious about the entire situation, and I was like, ‘Did I make the wrong choice? I don’t know if I should do this.'”

Guy Ritchie is back with The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Based on what is allegedly the first “Black Ops” mission it’s a variation on The Dirty Dozen and all the knock-offs that followed, right up to and including Inglourious Basterds.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare opens with a boat having just been boarded by several members of the German Navy. As they pour gasoline over the deck, they tell its occupants they have the choice of staying on board and burning to death, or jumping overboard and drowning. For some reason, however, they don’t seem very worried.
From there we jump back 25 days, to Churchill watching newsreel footage about Hitler’s U-boats keeping American troops from entering the war.

Chris Pine's best movies showcase his versatility, naturalism, and ability to build compelling characters, bringing emotional depth to each role. From high-budget sci-fi franchises to low-budget indies, Pine has excelled in lead roles since his breakout in the 2009 Star Trek reboot cast. Pine's standout performances are evident in films like Smokin' Aces, The Finest Hours, Star Trek Beyond, Outlaw King, and Hell or High Water.
Chris Pine's best movies show the actor's versatility, skill at building characters, naturalism, unmatched screen presence, and well of emotional depth. Despite Pine's admitted lack of passion for acting initially, he has brought his well-trained and inherited talent to a range of films, from high-budget sci-fi franchises to low-budget indies and everything in between. While the actor is always in top form and has been a standout and a saving grace in a few less-than-stellar movies, some of his films are worth watching more than others.

Tom Brady is considered to be one of the greatest NFL players of all time, and now that he’s retired (for good this time), he’s about to be the focus of a scripted limited TV series.
Deadline reports that Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson, who wrote The Fighter, are developing The Patriot Way. The series, which is based on 12: The Inside Story of Tom Brady’s Fight for Redemption by Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge, will chronicle “Brady’s improbable rise from sixth-round NFL draft pick to his half-dozen Super Bowl wins with the Patriots, the Aaron Hernandez, Spygate and Deflategate scandals and Brady’s battle of wills with head coach Bill Belichick.” As Tom Brady and the New England Patriots are public figures, the writers say it will allow them “the freedom to tell the story without a filter.”

After helming a series of based-on-a-true-story projects including “Million Dollar Arm,” “The Finest Hours,” “I, Tonya” and “Pam & Tommy,” Craig Gillespie was the natural candidate to direct “Dumb Money,” Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum’s chronicle of the January 2021 GameStop stock short squeeze and its reverberations throughout Wall Street. But Gillespie tells Variety it wasn’t his developing pedigree in this eclectic subgenre but an experience closer to home that prompted him to take on the story of Keith Gill, aka Roaring Kitty, and the scrappy bunch of investors who rattled two hedge funds and changed investment culture forever.
“I was living it with my son, who was going through Covid with us, and he was on [the subreddit] r/WallStreetBets from early on,” Gillespie reveals. “He went through this whole drama — the highs, the lows, everything about it — so I was emotionally connected to it.”

Screenwriter Scott Silver, known for Joker, The Fighter, 8 Mile and The Finest Hours, has bought a mid-century modern house owned by socialite and philanthropist Jamie Tisch for $4.99 million.
The sale comes months after the home hit the market in March for initially $7 million and about 2.5 years after Tisch initially acquired the .25-acre property. The two-story house built and designed by William Porush and Richard Kearney in 1962 sits in the Hollywood Hills, just a few blocks above the Sunset Plaza.
According to Dirt, Tisch listed the house for approximately 2.5 times what she paid for it when it was put up for sale in June 2020. At the time, it was described as needing some updates.
Now, post renovations, the outlet reported that the 3,517-square-foot home’s main level includes an open-plan living room, dining area, kitchen, three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The primary suite also features its own private balcony deck.

When hanging out with your nerdy pals, there's a chance that one question will enter the conversation: "Which is the superior Hollywood Chris?" Most of your friends will be "Saturday Night Live"-avoiding Chris Evans fans since he's the All-American hunk, while others might side with "Extraction" franchise star Chris Hemsworth, as he's the perfect blend of a Golden Retriever and a Ken doll. And though there are other stars named Chris to choose from (including the dinosaur-fighting Pratt), there's one Chris that deserves the most respect: Chris Pine.
With his classic-meets-avant-garde aesthetic, Pine represents those who color outside the lines, enjoy lavender lattes with an extra shot of espresso, and listen to live recordings of Fleetwood Mac on rainy days. He's a performer who is immensely talented as an actor but also possesses the kind of dreamy singing voice that is impossible not to swoon over. Plus, Pine isn't afraid to laugh at himself,...

Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive track from Carter Burwell’s Oscar-shortlisted score for The Tragedy of Macbeth, which is set for release tomorrow via Milan Records, as the film from director Joel Coen premieres globally on Apple TV+.
Coen’s take on William Shakespeare’s classic 17th century play Macbeth watches as Denzel Washington’s Scottish lord is convinced by a trio of witches that he will become the next King of Scotland, subsequently conspiring to seize power with the help of his wife, Lady Macbeth (Frances McDormand).
It’s the latest project to emerge from a career-spanning partnership between Burwell and Coen, dating back to 1984, which has seen the former score almost all of the latter’s films including Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men and True Grit.
Burwell’s score for The Tragedy of Macbeth juxtaposes string-heavy instrumentation with onscreen dialogue performed throughout the film,...

Ben Foster, Charmaine Bingwa, Gilbert Owuor and Mustafa Shakir have joined the cast of Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming thriller “Emancipation,” starring Will Smith.
Smith stars as Peter, a runaway slave who flees Louisiana in hopes of traveling north to freedom. “Emancipation” is inspired by the true story of “Whipped Peter,” an enslaved person who emancipated himself from a southern plantation and joined the Union Army. In 1863, photos taken of Peter during an Army medical examination first appeared in Harper’s Weekly. One image, known as “The Scourged Back,” shows the scars from a whipping on Peter’s bare back, illustrating the true cruelty of slavery and ultimately contributed to growing public opposition.
Fuqua will direct from a script by William N. Collage. Fuqua Films and Smith’s media company Westbrook Inc. are backing the project, which sold to Apple Studios for a reported $120 million.
Foster stars opposite Smith, playing Fassel,...

Coming off of I, Tonya, Craig Gillespie was a bold and inspired choice to direct a Disney origin story about Cruella de Vil, the evil heiress from the 101 Dalmatians stories. But now it’s hard to imagine anyone but the Australian filmmaker at the helm of Cruella, which has been praised for its unique identity within Disney’s oeuvre. Gillespie, who’d previously worked with Disney’s president of production, Sean Bailey, on 2014’s Million Dollar Arm and 2016’s The Finest Hours, couldn’t resist Bailey’s pitch involving Emma Stone, 1970s London and the punk rock movement.

Early word is in for “I, Tonya” director Craig Gillespie’s flamboyant spin on the origin story of iconic Disney villain Cruella de Vil, and the film looks to be a winner. Emma Stone is being praised for her wicked twist on the “101 Dalmatians” villainess. Emma Thompson is also being singled out for her turn as Baroness von Hellman, the head of a swank fashion house and also a renowned haute fashion legend. Check out first reactions below.
Disney’s synopsis for “Cruella” reads: “In 1970s London, young fashion designer Estella de Vil becomes obsessed with dogs’ skins, especially Dalmatians, until she eventually becomes a ruthless and terrifying legend known as Cruella.”
Like many indie filmmakers, Gillespie turned his indie film success into a Disney tentpole directing gig. The filmmaker last worked with Disney on two projects: “The Finest Hours” and “Million Dollar Arm,” although neither title found great box office success.
