Sundance Institute has announced the four independent films that will make their digital debut on June 18 through a variety of platforms and storefronts, via the Institute’s Artist Services program. In addition, three previously announced titles will expand to additional portals. For details visit sundance.org/nowplaying.

The upcoming releases, three of which are documentaries, focus on unlikely heroes such as the bold and brave reporters challenging the boundaries of free speech in their homeland of China (High Tech, Low Life) and women serving time in a Siberian prison who organize a beauty pageant every year to demonstrate that beauty can still be found in the ugliest of places (Miss Gulag). Titles will be available on a variety of platforms, including iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Microsoft Xbox, Sony Entertainment Network, SundanceNOW, Vudu and YouTube.

Burn will be released as part of a recent collaboration between Artist Services and non-profit partner organization Film Independent. The collaboration allows partner organizations to select films they have supported to receive access to best-in-class digital distribution arrangements secured by Artist Services.

In the past few years there’s been an influx of increasingly mainstream films with lesbian themes (The Runaways, The Kids Are All Right) but unfortunately that was not the case in 2012, which didn’t have much to offer in terms of films depicting ladies who love ladies. Sundace brought us the pick of the litter: Young & Wild, My Best Day and Mosquito Y Mari. Overall I saw more films depicting gay men than women and if we’re going to be represented at all in the Oscars this year, it’ll most likely be with a film that happens to feature lesbian characters (like Your Sister's Sister) as oppose to films that focus on lesbian narratives.

At one point in the film, Karen (Rachel Style) says that, “I’m sick of all the bullshit streaming out of everyone’s mouth. Including my own”. Out of all the ornate, haphazard, and abject silliness that happens in Erin Greenwell’s My Best Day, this statement is the only point of genuine certitude.

The film begins with Karen, a receptionist at a refrigerator repair shop. Through her narration and a Juno like collage of Polaroid’s, we find that she’s somewhat of an orphan, looking for her estranged father. When she suspects one caller to be her long lost dad, Karen enlists the help of her friend Meagan (Ashlie Atkinson) to find the truth.

Sundance Institute today announced that Ice-t and hip hop icons Chuck D (Public Enemy) and Grandmaster Caz will perform at .A Celebration of Music in Film. on January 21 at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. .A Celebration of Music in Film,. one of the most anticipated music events at the annual Festival, this year celebrates Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap, by director Ice-t, co-director Andy Baybutt and producer Paul Toogood.

The event takes place Saturday, January 21, 8:30 p.m. at the Sundance Music Café. A limited number of free tickets to the event will be available to Festival credential holders (21 and up) via Twitter @sundancefestnow and Ice-t.s feed @finallevel. Additionally, the event will be live streamed at www.

Once again, movie lovers and industry insiders will be gathering in Park City, Utah this month for the annual independent film orgy known as the Sundance Film Festival (January 19-29) with additional action unspooling at the longstanding alternative event known as Slamdance (January 20-26).

The Lgbt offerings for 2012 look to be slimmer than in years past but here's a sneak peek at some of the titles debuting in Park City that you'll be wanting to keep an eye out for at your local Lgbt film festival this year. Caveat: I have not actually seen any of these films except one (My Best Day which I heartily recommend).

At Sundance:

From out gay writer-director Ira Sachs (The Delta, Forty Shades of Blue) comes the autobiographical romantic drama, Keep The Lights On. Set in the late '90s against a New York City backdrop this is the lone gay feature in the highly competitive U.

Sundance programmer Jon Korn calls "My Best Day" "a charming, up-to-the-minute slice of Americana" and says "Greenwell's quirky script and great ensemble performances ensure that My Best Day is both subversive and sunny." In the film, Karen's (Rachel Style) day goes from bad (she must work on July 4) to crazy (she falls in love and sets off a cascading domino effect of small-town antics). What's it about?  On the 4th of July, Karen may have found the father she never knew. To get to him she'll have to navigate her new trailer park family.  Says Erin Greenwell: "I was a shy kid but this gave me observation. I stumbled across the talent of being a mimic and caricature drawer of hated teachers. I did an unsolicited living history presentation as Butch Cassidy from the Hole in the Wall Gang in the 3rd grade and did not get picked on for it.

Following up their initial competition announcement the folks at the Sundance Film Festival have released the names of thirty additional 2012 selections, in the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, Next, and New Frontiers sections.

Although these sections tend to focus more on young and up-and-coming filmmakers (particularly the Next sidebar, which was created just a few years ago with that specific mandate), you might find a few names you recognize in the full list of invited films below. Next is where you'll find the new film from "Great World of Sound" director Craig Zobel; it's called "Compliance" and it's described as the (based-on-a-)true story of what happens "when a prank caller convinces a fast food restaurant manager to interrogate an innocent young employee." Lynn Shelton, director of "Humpday," will premiere "Your Sister's Sister" starring Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt and "Humpday"s Mark Duplass. Duplass also wrote his wife Katie Aselton...

Now in its third year, Sundance's Next section (which describes its works as "bold", and "innovative" (think more accessible than and just as low budget as the stuff we find in the New Frontiers section) grabs our attention because of its inclusion of Craig Zobel's latest effort, Compliance a true story drama perhaps in the same budget range as Great World of Sound. Other alumni embedded in this group of nine include: Helmer Destin Daniel Cretton (who one in Park City a couple of years back for Short Term 12) returns with his feature debut, I Am Not a Hipster and the Zellner bros. are back again with their latest, Kid-Thing (the teaser on Kickstarter seriously rocks). Worth noting: actress Carrie Preston brings her feature bromance-like comedy (That's What She Said) with the unlikely trio of actresses in Anne Heche, Marcia DeBonis, Alia Shawkat while Matt Ross (I'm sure...

Yesterday Sundance released their films up for competition for the 2012 festival. But that was only one half of the festival slate. Now Sundance has released the second half of films that will be released as part of the festivities. Films in competition are just as interesting as those not in competition and with titles The Raid and Wuthering Heights are all on the list, it will be a fun watch this year.

I've had a blast every year that I've attended The Sundance Film Festival, it's always a surprise! You never know what movie you are going to see until you see it. If you ever get a chance to go I highly recommend that you do. Each film on the list has a little description next to it. The festival will take place January 19th to the 29th.

We'll cut in just as Trevor Groth, Director of Programming for the Sundance Film Festival, is saying, “In many ways, the extremes of the Festival’s program are most readily apparent in our out-of-competition sections, which showcase the wildest comedies, the most terrifying horror films and uncompromised visions from singular voices springing up from around the country and the world.
