The spirit of “Ghost” literally haunts “The In Between,” a romance about two high school students whose love affair is tragically cut short, including a cameo by the poster for the 1990 blockbuster which starred Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze. This time, the star-crossed lovers are teenagers — Tessa (Joey King) and Skylar (Kyle Allen) — who are involved in a car accident in the movie’s first scene. Skyler is killed and Tessa is hospitalized with a critical injury to her heart, an example of the film’s less-than-subtle use of metaphors.

Using a split timeline, “The In Between” alternates between the past, recounting how Tessa and Skylar fell in love, and the present, in which the grieving Tessa starts to believe her late boyfriend is trying to communicate with her from beyond the grave.

Paramount Players romance feature The In Between will hit the Paramount+ streaming service on Friday, Feb. 11.

The movie is a supernatural love story that centers on a teenage girl, Tessa (Joey King), who, after bouncing around in foster homes for most of her childhood, doesn’t believe she deserves her own love story. Everything changes after she has a chance encounter with Skylar (Kyle Allen), a senior from a neighboring town who’s a true romantic. As her heart begins to open, tragedy strikes when a car accident takes Skylar’s life, while Tessa survives. As Tessa searches for answers in the aftermath of the accident, she soon believes Skylar is attempting to reconnect with her from the afterworld. With the help of her best friend and a newfound belief that love never dies, Tessa attempts to contact Skylar one last time, in order to give their love story the epic ending it deserves.

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.

Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.

Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. A sequel to “Paranormal Activity” and a prequel to “Pet Sematary” will debut on Paramount Plus. In addition, “The In Between,” a supernatural thriller from “Chumscruber” and “The Face of Love” director Arie Posin, will also premiere on the new streaming service.

The films were developed by Paramount Players, the studio’s genre label. Paramount is looking to produce between four to six films for the streaming service annually. Paramount Plus was unveiled to investors on Wednesday and will make its debut in March. It also comes as the streaming wars are heating up and media companies are looking to topple Netflix. Disney, WarnerMedia, Apple and Comcast have all unveiled streaming services in recent months, while ViacomCBS is rebranding CBSAll Access as Paramount Plus.

“Paranormal Activity” will be a “new, unexpected chapter” in the long-running horror series, the studio said. The film is directed by Will Eubank (“Underwater”) from a script by Christopher Landon.

Paramount Players’ supernatural romance “The In Between” has found its male lead, with Kyle Allen cast to star opposite Joey King.

Arie Posin has signed on to direct the pic, which is based on an idea by Marc Klein, who also penned the script. “The In Between” centers on a teenage girl (King), who “after surviving a car accident that took the life of her boyfriend, believes he’s attempting to reconnect with her from the after world.” Klein and Jamie King serve as executive producers, with Robbie Brenner and Andrew Deane producing alongside Joey King. King previously served as an executive producer on “The Kissing Booth 2,” the hit romantic series in which she also stars.

Allen is best known for playing Hawk Lane for three seasons alongside Aaron Paul and Michelle Monaghan in Hulu’s “The Path” and portraying Timothy Campbell in FX’s “American Horror Story: Apocalypse.

Albert Finney, one of the leading actors of the postwar period, has died after a short illness. He was 82.

The robust British actor began as a stage actor before transitioning to film. With his gravely voice and rumbling stare he brought an intense realism to his work, rising to fame in such 1960s classics as “Saturday Night and Sunday Morning” and “Tom Jones.” He later memorably played Agatha Christie’s legendary sleuth Hercule Poirot in “Murder on the Orient Express” and impressed critics and audiences with towering performances in “The Dresser” and “Under the Volcano.” Finney was nominated for five Oscars but never won the prize.

In 1963, Finney played the foundling hero in Tony Richardson’s Oscar best picture winner “Tom Jones.” The role made Finney an international movie star and earned him the first of four best actor Oscar nominations. A year earlier, Finney had turned down the title...

Skydance has entered into a multi-year overall deal for feature films and television with producers Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn of Mockingbird Pictures.

The company has several projects in development with Curtis (pictured) and Lynn, including the upcoming AMC television series Dietland.

Curtis and Lynn first partnered at Mockingbird Pictures after producing Albert Nobbs in 2012. The pair have produced seven films together, including Arie Posin’s The Face Of Love, Victor Levin’s 5 To 7, and Rodrigo Garcia’s Last Days In The Desert.

This year the duo has released Life, The Sweet Life, and Wakefield. Next on their slate is Marti Noxon’s To The Bone, which will premiere on Netflix in July.

Producers Julie Lynn and Bonnie Curtis will produce the 7th Annual Governors Awards for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs announced today.

The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award will be presented to Debbie Reynolds, and Honorary Awards will be presented to Spike Lee and Gena Rowlands, on Saturday, November 14, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center.

“Julie and Bonnie are incredibly talented producers – the perfect team to help us celebrate the accomplishments of our honorees,” said Boone Isaacs.

“We are honored and thrilled by this opportunity, as we have such deep respect for The Academy,” said Lynn and Curtis. “With masterful artists like Ms. Reynolds, Ms. Rowlands, and Mr. Lee to celebrate, the evening might just produce itself!”

Here is an initially intriguing oddity on the doppelganger theme from Arie Posin, who made a suburbia satire called The Chumscrubber in 2005. It finally unravels into bathos and absurdity, though not without some moments of interest on the way. The Face of Love is not quite a supernatural thriller, nor exactly a romantic drama, nor precisely a study in psychological breakdown. Perhaps it needed a young M Night Shyamalan to endow it with some final whiplash twist. Nikki, a highly strung performance from Annette Bening, is grieving for her adored husband, played by Ed Harris. Then she is astonished to see a certain man who looks exactly like her late husband, also played by Ed Harris. What is going on?...

While the Oscar race for Best Actor has heated up to a frenzy with, as previously reported here, at least 30 viable candidates and only five slots, most observers have labeled this year’s Best Actress crop from weak to thin with not even enough sure things at this point to make a list of five.

That’s a bit of an overstatement as pundits generally agree there are at least three, possibly four near-certainties for nominations: Julianne Moore for the still-unreleased Still Alice (out Dec. 5), Felicity Jones for The Theory Of Everything and Reese Witherspoon for Wild (also out Dec. 5).

Let’s face it; Annette Bening is the real deal. Perhaps the greatest achievement of The Face of Love is in the superb cinematography that captures her in all of her classic elegance. From smooth dolly moves to immaculate close-ups, her radiance as an aging paramour commands the camera in every lingering, nuanced moment. Still going strong nearly thirty years after getting her start, she’s a classy, dignified template young actresses of today should endeavor to follow. Unfortunately, The Face of Love is only partially buoyed from its melodramatic implausibility by her, with the able assistance of the underused and always compelling Ed Harris.

I didn’t see Robin Williams‘ attempt at a new sitcom, CBS’ The Crazy Ones. I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to think that the great Robin was, at only 62, already making the trip back to weekly TV half-hours after such a stellar, Oscar-winning career in films and such a bright, unhinged light on comedy stages for all of his career. It’s just too constricting for this kind of talent. It’s even sadder to think the show got cancelled after one season, a failure that must have been hard to take. No, my most recent memories of Robin Williams are on the big screen, where he seemed to be heading for a place of renewal, not only as the funnyman everyone knew, but really a fine dramatic actor. Oscar winner and comedian Robin Williams died this morning at 63. While his publicist wouldn’t confirm that his death was a suicide, a rep did issue this statement. “Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”

What could be better than one Jesse Eisenberg? Two, perhaps. Unless one of them is driving you crazy. The star is pulling double duty as a man who is slowly being driven insane by his doppelganger-cum-rival in The Double, which heads to theatres in limited release this week. The film is totally on trend when it comes to cinematic doppelgangers with a few upcoming and recent releases getting more bang for their buck with having actors perform dual roles on screen.

The Double comes on the heels of recent release Enemy which found Toronto professor Jake Gyllenhaal obsessed with a look-alike after spotting him in a movie, and the recently released The Face of Love which sees a grieving widow (Annette Bening) fall in love with a dead ringer for her, well, dead husband played by Ed Harris. All three films premiered last September at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In recent years we have seen a number of films that are clearly inspired by the works of the legendary director Alfred Hitchcock. Just last year, not one but two films were released that carried visual and narrative traits that were all too common in the work of the master of suspense. Both Side Effects and Stoker transformed the idea of a Hitchcock thriller for modern audiences while still clearly letting their respected director’s voices be heard.

This certainly isn’t the case with Matthew McDuffie and Arie Posin’s story of a mournful widow. As the film opens, we see Nikki (Annette Bening) coping with the death of her husband Garrett (Ed Harris). Flashbacks to happier times still haunt her as she attempts to move on five years after his death. When visiting an art museum one afternoon she sees what appears to be her husband sitting in front of her.

What would happen if you saw someone with an uncanny resemblance to a late friend or family member? How would you react? Filmmaker Arie Posin’s mother had a close encounter with a man who looked eerily like her late husband, and the director was so intrigued by this story that he wrote a screenplay, with Matthew McDuffie, about the peculiar situation.

Titled The Face of Love, Posin’s film opened in theatres last Friday after a festival run that included stops in Toronto and San Sebastian. It tells the story of Nikki (Annette Bening), a widow who falls in love with an artist named Tom (Ed Harris), who looks exactly like her late husband.

Posin is an Israeli-born director who lived in Canada before moving to Los Angeles and heading to film school at the University of Southern California. The Face of Love marks his second film, after 2005’s coming-of-age indie comedy The Chumscrubber.

Love can be a terrible thing. Sharing a life with someone, building a home together, getting married, having children and merging identities to near incongruous levels are all part of the sacrificing and lifetime decision-making one does when finding “the one.” Imagine being so entwined with your better half for years, only to suddenly lose them forever. The waves of shock and horror must be overwhelming because you didn't just lose the love of your life, your partner and your lover. If The Face of Love proves anything, it is that Annette Bening is still one of the finest American actors working today. The third annual Sun Valley Film Festival (Svff) in Idaho begins next week starting off with a screening of the Ed Harris and Annette Bening drama "The Face of Love." From March 13 to 16, the Sun Valley Film Festival in Idaho will roll out the red carpet for filmmakers and movie lovers in Hollywood’s original ski Shangri-La. This third edition of the festival will serve up a film slate of over 50 features and shorts, along with new programs, galas, concerts and more. The Spotlight On Annette Bening will take place on November 12 at the Egyptian Theatre. Bening will talk about career highlights plus her latest role in Arie Posen’s The Face Of Love.

The Los Angeles Times Young Hollywood Roundtable in association with Epix will feature DeHaan, Greta Gerwig, Michael B Jordan, Brie Larson and Miles Teller on November 8 at the Tcl Chinese 6.

Guests scheduled to attend the festival include guest artistic director Agnès Varda and Bernardo Bertolucci, Asghar Farhadi, Drake Doremus, Sebastián Lelio, Hany Abu-Assad, Hirokazu Kore-eda and Eli Roth.

The Toronto International Film Festival® has announced the addition of 3 Galas and 19 Special Presentations to the 2013 Festival programme, including a further 12 World Premieres. Academy Award nominee Ed Harris (The Hours, Pain And Gain) is set to star alongside Ethan Hawke in writer/director Michael Almereyda’s modern day adaption of Shakespeare’s timeless play Cymbeline.

Set to start principal photography on August 19, 2013 in New York City, Cymbeline unfolds as an epic battle between dirty cops and a drug dealing biker gang set in a corruption-riddled 21st century America. In the vein of Sons of Anarchy and in the style of Romeo + Juliet, Cymbeline is a fresh take on a universal story of love, betrayal and revenge.

Ed Harris, who plays King Cymbeline, stars in The Weinstein Company’s Snowpiercer alongside Jamie Bell and Chris Evans, and will soon star opposite Annette Bening in the romantic drama, The Face Of Love. He is a four-time Academy Award nominee for his performances in Apollo 13, The Truman Show, The Hours and Pollock, which he also directed.

With a mid-August shooting date staring him in the face, Hamlet director Michael Almereyda is busy recruiting people to star in his latest Shakespeare adaptation, Cymbeline. One of the main characters in the film will be King Cymbeline, and Almereyda has Ed Harris set for the role.Harris joins Almereyda’s Hamlet collaborator Ethan Hawke in adapting Shakespeare’s play about a princess who disobeys her father’s wishes and marries beneath herself, which sparks a chain of exiling, seduction, disguises and deception.Almereyda’s version takes the Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet route and updates the plot to a tale of dirty cops and drug-dealing bikers in 21st century America. We’re guessing Cymbeline won’t be an actual king, but more likely the leader of a gang.The cameras are set to roll on August 19 in New York, with money from the producers behind 12 Years A Slave and Margin Call.

Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds, The Host, The Green Blade Rises, Farewell, My Queen) and Anton Yelchin (Fright Night, Star Trek, Like Crazy) are attached to star in the romantic comedy 5 To 7, written and to be directed by Victor Levin (AMC.s .Mad Men.), it was announced today by producers Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn of Mockingbird Pictures and The Solution Entertainment Group.s (.The Solution.) co-founders and partners, Lisa Wilson and Myles Nestel.

Wilson and Nestel are on board as co-executive producers of the film with the company also handling international distribution rights. The Solution will introduce the project to buyers at the upcoming American Film Market.

We received some crucial casting news regarding Arie Posin‘s The Look of Love back in the dog days of February, when Annette Bening jumped in to replace Diane Keaton in the role of “Niki, a widow who falls for a new man who looks identical to her deceased husband.” In the same report, we also learned that Robin Williams, who’s fallen off the beaten path a bit since his committed turn in the much-discussed World’s Greatest Dad, hopped on board as well. Meanwhile, Ed Harris, who plays the “dead ringer for [Bening's] deceased husband,” has been on board from the beginning.

This latest piece of casting information concerns names that aren’t quite as high-profile as the aforementioned stars, but it’s worth noting nevertheless. The additions include Amy Brenneman (the Robert De Niro love interest from Michael Mann‘s Heat) and Jess Weixler, who’ll play Bening‘s daughter in the film.
