Elizabeth Olsen’s career soared high after she starred in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Wanda Maximoff. The actress, who had been working on independent movies before her stint in the comic book movie empire, expressed regret about turning down a project she loved because of her commitment to Marvel Studios.

Understandably, she might feel like she missed out on many things. She played the mutant role from 2015 to 2022, and seven years would have given her more than enough time to explore many film genres and projects.

Elizabeth Olsen has charmed audiences not just with her surname but with her own resplendent performances in Tinseltown. Far from riding on her sisters’ coattails, she is a tour de force in her own right, capturing hearts as Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But did you know her acting journey was also seasoned with indie gems like Martha Marcy May Marlene and Silent House before she stormed the big screen, reacting to the awe-inspiring CGI behemoth in Godzilla?

Like writers penning their memoirs, making movies about making movies is a rite of passage for many a director. Fellini famously did it with 8 ½, Truffaut with Day for Night, Godard with Contempt and Fassbinder with Beware of a Holy Whore. More recently, Tarantino gave us Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Spielberg The Fabelmans, Michel Hazavanicius made Final Cut and Damien Chazelle, Babylon.
Almost all behind-the-scenes movies share the same theme: Filmmaking is tough, high-stress work that weighs heavily on everyone involved, especially the directors themselves. That’s certainly one of the main takeaways from Cédric Kahn’s very French variation on the subject, Making Of, which premiered out of competition in Venice.
Kahn is both an actor (he played the douchey Gallic lover in Pawel Pawikowski’s Cold War) and talented director, with a series of strong features under his belt that include hard-hitting thrillers like L’Ennui,...

Anna Novion’s Marguerite's Theorem (Le théorème de Marguerite), co-written with Agnès Feuvre, Marie-Stéphane Imbert, and Mathieu Robin, stars Ella Rumpf (Julia Ducournau’s Raw) as Marguerite Hoffmann, PhD student of mathematics at the prestigious École Normale Supérieure in Paris and Jean-Pierre Darroussin (unforgettable since Cédric Kahn’s Red Lights) as her professor, Laurent Werner. The film had its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
Maths formulae written in chalk and with urgency on a blackboard, followed by a quick edit to the most serious face of a scientist or two have been the fodder of spy movies for the past century. Alfred Hitchcock in Torn Curtain made it particularly tongue-in-cheek and sexy with Paul Newman’s Cold War quest traversing East Germany in 1966.

Along with Alice Diop’s Saint Omer, which won Venice’s Silver Lion last year, and Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, premiering in Cannes’ main competition next week, Cédric Kahn’s The Goldman Case marks a recent trend of arthouse courtroom dramas that, beyond a few exceptions (such as Henri-George Clouzot’s seldom seen masterpiece, The Truth), have never been a major facet of French cinema.
This is because French trials, unlike American ones, tend to be less dramatic, with fewer rulings by jury (outside of murder cases) and with the judge playing a larger role in the proceedings, reviewing facts and statements in a dry manner. However, there have been a number of highly headline-grabbing trials in France these past years, including that of former President Nicolas Sarkozy for election fraud charges, and another concerning the November 13 terrorist attacks, which have brought the courtroom back into the public sphere.

"What matters here is being loved, child, not loving..." Buffalo 8 Films has revealed an official US trailer for an indie romantic musical titled Love Gets a Room, the latest film made by Spanish filmmaker Rodrigo Cortés (best known for directing both Buried and Red Lights a decade ago). This first premiered in Spain in 2021, but is only now getting an official US release this summer. Inspired by true events during the 1942 Nazi occupation of Poland, Love Gets a Room is the story of a Jewish stage actress who must make the gut-wrenching decision to follow her heart or escape the Warsaw ghetto. Told in real time like Cortés' acclaimed Buried, the film is a romantic tale of love and survival in the face of harrowing circumstances. This stars Clara Rugaard, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Mark Ryder, Anastasia Hille, Magnus Krepper, and Henry Goodman. With cinematography by Rafa García. Quinzaine des Cinéastes Artistic Director Julien Rejl broke bread this morning with a camera shy live tweet of the line-up. We count nineteen features (for now), a handful of shorts and Special Screening status going to Manoel de Oliveira’s Abraham’s Valley (1993). We would have fallen out of our chairs just with the opening and closing night selections. Cédric Kahn becomes film festival worthy once again with Le Procès Goldman as the opener. Best know in the early naughts for Roberto Succo (2001) and Red Lights (2004), Kahn currently has two new films in post with this project chronicling the trial of Goldman, a French left-wing revolutionary who was convicted of several robberies and was mysteriously murdered.…...

Mario Casas, one of Spain’s biggest film and TV stars, and Goya Award winner actress Anna Castillo, will headline “Escape,” the new film by writer-director Rodrigo Cortés.
Produced by Adrián Guerra and Núria Valls at Barcelona-based Nostromo Pictures, “Escape” is a free adaptation of same-title novel penned by Spanish author Enrique Rubio.
Nostromo announced the new film project after completing an intense 2022, in which the company lensed seven films and released two more titles – Marçal Forés’ “Through My Window” and Oriol Paulo’s “God’s Crooked Lines” – both achieving a standout global reach.
“Escape’s” story turns on N., a young man who wants to live in prison and will do whatever it takes to get there, raising questions such as if those who care about him will get to stop him from committing increasingly serious crimes and how far will the judge go to not grant him his proposal.

Set in German-occupied Warsaw during WWII, Rodrigo Cortés’ “Love Gets a Room” is a story of perseverance, resilience and sacrifice. The film, which follows a band of Jewish actors contemplating escape while staging the Jerzy Jurandot-penned play of the same name, will world premiere out of competition at Spain’s Seville European Film Festival, which opens Nov. 5.
“Love Gets a Room” stars several rising talents, including Danish actress Clara Rugaard (“I Am Mother)” and Verona-born Valentina Bellè. The film is also the latest in the burgeoning career of writer-director Cortés, who broke out at Sundance directing Ryan Reynolds in “Buried” (2010), and followed up with Robert DeNiro and Sigourney Weaver in “Red Lights” (2012). Adrián Guerra, his longtime producer, once more produces.

Edgar Wright and Quentin Tarantino are longtime friends, and this friendship ended up playing a role in the titling of Wright’s new psychological thriller, “Last Night in Soho.” It turns out the title was Tarantino’s doing, as Wright recently admitted to Total Film magazine.
“In ‘Death Proof,’ Quentin uses a Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich song, ‘Hold Tight’,” Wright said. “I was talking to him about that song, and that band, and he said, ‘Have you ever heard “Last Night in Soho?”’ He played it for me, and he goes, ‘This is the best title music for a film that’s never been made.’”
The original title for “Last Night in Soho” was “Red Light Area,” but Wright scrapped it once he discovered there was already a Cillian Murphy-starring movie with the title “Red Lights.” Wright’s next title idea was “The Night Has a Thousand Eyes,...

Amidst a global pandemic that presented governments with a clear ethical dilemma between protecting their citizens’ well-being and the heartbeat of the economy, Spain’s government announced last May a robust hike in tax incentives that converted its tourism-driven economy into eye candy for big shoots and international productions.
Now, Spain’s film and TV industries are digesting its consequences: What are the foreseeable effects of the tax spike for locals in the still partially unforeseeable future?
Unveiled May 5, Spain’s new incentive rulings raises the cap on investors’ 25%-30% tax credits for Spanish shoots and local-spend rebates for visiting international productions from €3.28 million ($4.0 million) to €10.8 million ($13.1 million). The general thrust of the new regulation looks clear: a fast-growing industry, galvanized by new international market demand – think “Money Heist’s” viewing households on Netflix – now has even more tailwind behind it.

Sony label TriStar Pictures has acquired an untitled feature film about Nsync superfans who followed the boy band on tour in 2001, packed in a Winnebago bought with prize money from “The Price Is Right.”
Lance Bass, who first teased the project to Variety out of SXSW last year, is producing through his eponymous company along with Cindy Cowan.
Pitched as “Girls Trip” meets “Pitch Perfect,” the film is based on the true story of two best friends from Park City, Utah, who used game show earnings to buy a motor home and travel the U.S. to catch Bass and company — Justin Timberlake, Jc Chasez, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick — on their fourth and final national tour.
The project was preemptively brought in by TrisStar Pictures head Nicole Brown, from an original concept by Bass.

Exclusive: Screen Gems is developing a feature adaptation of Edwin F. Becker’s book True Haunting which The Call scribe Richard D’Ovidio is writing.
Cindy Cowan has optioned the book, and will produce with Steve Bersch and Scott Strauss overseeing the project. Screen Gems’ Brian Dukes will oversee for the studio.
True Haunting is the terrifying true story of the first televised exorcism on NBC in 1971. Millions around the country watched the program. The NBC news segment was a success, the exorcism was not. Instead, it made things worse for the Becker family who lived there. Much worse.
D’Ovidio (pictured above) is best known for writing The Call starring Halle Berry and The Forger with John Travolta and Christopher Plummer. He also wrote the spec script for Eye In The Sky which sold to Millennium Films in 2015 with Simon West directing.

After a six-year hiatus from feature length filmmaking, Spanish director Rodrigo Cortés is finally back with his latest fantasy horror picture Down a Dark Hall – also known by its alternate title Blackwood. Best known for his tense direction on the Ryan Reynolds-led Buried and the Sigourney Weaver-led Red Lights, Cortés is no stranger to the horror-thriller genre. In Dark Hall, Cortés throws a fantastical twist onto things as the film deals with the supernatural – spookily depicted in the first trailer for the film, which Lionsgate has now released.
Down a Dark Hall centers on a troublesome young adult named Kit Gordy who, after a brief altercation with the law, is sent to a mysterious disciplinary boarding school – “Welcome to Blackwood” the stern headmaster Madame Duret (played by Uma Thurman) announces in the trailer. From here, things only become darker. Accompanied by four other similarly aged girls, Kit and her...

French director and occasional actor Cedric Kahn is probably best known in the U.S. for a trio of thrillers he made more than a decade ago, beginning with the brooding sexual obsession story L’Ennui, which he followed up with the serial-killer portrait Roberto Succo and the Georges Simenon adaptation Red Lights. Since then, Kahn has made a handful of dramas exploring different facets of Gallic life, from the affairs of the bourgeoisie (The Regrets) to the travails of a struggling middle-class couple (A Better Life) to those of a family living on the fringes of modern society (Wild Life).

Longer, darker and closer to what came before, the extended version of Batman Forever sounds interesting at the least...
Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever was a divisive movie, to say the least, and one that we’ve debated the merits of before on this site. But even those of us who like the film (this writer included) would be quick to admit that it’s nowhere near the brilliance of the preceding brace of Bat-movies from Tim Burton.
It’s intriguing to hear, then, that the original cut of Batman Forever weighed in at 2 hours 40 minutes. That’s 38 minutes of extra footage that never made it into cinemas; enough missing minutes to significantly alter the film. Would the original version of Batman Forever have garnered more love?

Even as it was, Star Wars: Rogue One was a pretty dark and intense affair. This is, after all, a movie that reveals the human cost behind the stolen plans for the Death Star - plans that formed the jumping-off point for the much breezier New Hope. But looking back through Rogue One’s earlier trailers, there are hints here and there that Gareth Edwards’ prequel - the first in a planned series of A Star Wars Story spin-offs - might have been darker still as initially conceived.

The Canadian distributor backed by Teddy Schwarzman’s Black Bear Pictures is expanding operations.
Elevation will partner on the new division with Canadian producer Christina Piovesan, whose credits include The Whistleblower, Amreeka and Red Lights.
The company will offer production services to Canadian and international projects shooting in Canada and move into in-house productions.
“As more producers from around the world have come to recognise the unmatched appeal of Canada as a production destination, and with the growing success of homegrown content as well as international co-productions, a move into production was a natural next step for the company,” said Dan Steinman (pictured), the Elevation Pictures CEO who played an integral role in launching the company in 2013 and also serves as co-president and COO at Black Bear.
“And Christina, who has tremendous production savvy and relationships and taste, is the perfect complement to Elevation as we execute this move.”

Halloween is her favorite holiday. So it shouldn’t be a surprise to see that Kylie Jenner went all out on Friday night, hosting a “dead dinner” for family and friends with her beau Tyga.
The couple dressed as skeletons for the Halloween weekend dinner celebration — appeared to make use of Jenner’s cosmetics collection by painting their faces ghostly white for the event.
Jenner, 19, wore a sheer dress with black flower cutouts covering her up. Her blonde locks gelled back from her face let her deadly contour and blood red-lips shine.
Tyga, 26, dressed in all black — letting his striking makeup do the talking.

At the time of its production, Louis Malle’s 1978 title Pretty Baby (the title derived from the Tony Jackson song) was quite the scandal, a period piece frankly depicting child prostitution in turn of the century New Orleans. But like many provocative titles from the period (another being Richard Brooks’ Looking For Mr. Goodbar), decades of suppression has resulted in unavailability and a disappearance from modern cinematic conversations. Recently made available courtesy of the Warner Bros. Archive collection (solely on DVD) this is property begging for a more masterful restoration.
In the Red Lights district of 1917 New Orleans, legal prostitution is on the wane as a surge of conservative, religious rhetoric begins to sweep through the country. Nell (Francis Faye) owns a booming brothel in the famed Storyville district, and one of her most notable employees is Hattie (Susan Sarandon), whose twelve-year-old daughter Violet (Brooke Shields) has grown up within the house.

Selected as the Venezuelan submission for Best Foreign Language Film for the 2014 Academy Awards, Alberto Arvelo’s The Liberator, a biopic on Simon Bolivar, actually made the shortlist of the final nine films. The positive attention it received from Academy members did little for its box office potential, grossing only $113,000 in the Us. While many seemed to agree on the film’s faults, it wasn’t without its champions, particularly concerning Edgar Ramirez’s noble performance as Bolivar.
Arriving with all the earmarks of a truncated and incredibly abridged version of history in order to cram into the corset of a two hour cinematic straightjacket, this unwisely attempts to chart nearly the entire life of Simon Bolivar in one dense chunk. The result is a jack hammered miasma of assorted clichés, conflating events into a romanticized exaggeration of generalization, which collapses, as these types often do, into a hellishly dull...

What's worse: bad horror movies or mediocre ones that don't leave much of an impression. The latter is the case with Out of the Dark, the latest in a string of Spanish/American co-productions that see Hollywood stars making movies in English that only occasionally see any sort of substantial release in North America. The thing is, sometimes these movies are actually really great, as is the case with Red Lights (trailer) which blew me away when I finally caught up with in on home video a few years ago. This one? Not so much.
