The film centers on Joanna (Lapkus), a “total nut” who is wearing new motherhood so awkwardly that she remarks candidly “I’m not really a mom, I just have a baby, you know?” This new mom is also an artist who isn’t making any art, and feels truly terrible at taking care of her newborn, as she stumbles through her days. She can’t get her old job back, her old friends have moved on without her, her husband thinks he’s a better mother than she is, she’s terribly sleep deprived, and her baby won’t look at her.

HBO’s The Weeknd-Sam Levinson production “The Idol” will premiere out of competition at the iconic Cannes Film Festival, sources close to production have confirmed to IndieWire, before a broadcast premiere sometime this fall.
The show, which stars co-creator Abel Tesfaye (aka The Weeknd) and Lily-Rose Depp, will screen at the 76th edition of the prestigious festival, which runs from May 16 to May 27. Either the first two or three episodes in the six-part season are expected to screen at the fest, according to sources. Programmers are debating on the number of episodes to present, since the third ends on a major cliffhanger. Representatives for HBO told IndieWire that “The Idol’s” visit to Cannes remains unconfirmed.
Earlier this month, Variety reported that Tesfaye hoped to bring the show to Cannes, but it had not been screened for the festival’s programmers.

With the switch in Academy Award dates for 2021, many were suggesting that February was the “new” December and that a fest like Sundance might benefit from this glam. Yesterday, Netflix dated Sam Levinson‘s third feature film Malcolm & Marie with a February 5th release date, essentially throwing that hat into the Indie Spirits and Oscars race and it just so happens that it coincides with Sundance 2021 festival week. Levinson has made two feature film and both have premiered at Sundance. So after Another Happy Day (2011) and Assassination Nation (2018) he could very well find himself at the fest at the same time as his father Barry has a legit shot at showcasing Harry Heft.…...

“Assassination Nation” deserved to play in a much bigger theatre screen at the London Film Festival. Every single seat was taken in the tiny 127-seater screen in Picturehouse Central. Why this film was shoved in this screen, we shall never know. But it’s safe to say that each and every one of the 127 people thoroughly enjoyed Sam Levinson‘s film with a round of applause greeting the film come the end credits, which included a one-shot marching band sequence that was inspired.
Here’s the official synopsis from the Refinery29, Agbo and Neon film, the latter of which released last year’s Oscar winner “I, Tonya:” After a malicious data hack exposes the secrets of the perpetually American town of Salem, chaos descends and four girls must fight to survive while coping with the hack themselves.

Its story couldn’t be more contemporary — what happens to a small community when people’s online secrets start getting exposed — but “Assassination Nation” is clearly the product of artists with a deep background in old movies. The plotline recalls “Le Corbeau” (that 1943 Nazi-occupation classic about a French village torn apart by poison-pen letters) by way of “Jawbreaker,” and the red, white and blue split-screens will tickle both fans of Godard’s “Made in U.S.A.” and Abel Gance’s “Napoleon.”
And even if the somewhat scattershot “Assassination Nation” might not wind up being as well remembered in cinema history, audiences may nonetheless forgive the film’s shortcomings because of its sheer verve and chutzpah. Whatever faults lie in the script by writer-director Sam Levinson (“Another Happy Day”) get swallowed up by the flash and dazzle of his direction and the editing by Ron Patane (“A Most Violent Year”).

A Salem, Massachusetts-set offering from Sundance’s Midnight section — “Assassination Nation” — surprised everyone by becoming the festival’s biggest buy thus far. It’s been a long seven years between features for Sam Levinson. Having started his film career with one of the best films from 2011 in what we called “a bitter, nasty, angry film about family members getting together for a wedding”, it appears that there won’t be many or any similarities between Another Happy Day and Levinson’s sophomore project.

It’s going on six years since Sam Levinson last stepped behind the lens for Another Happy Day, but the actor-writer-director has spent the past few months piecing together his sophomore effort: Assassination Nation.
Following up on the casting of Suki Waterhouse, Odessa Young, Hari Nef and R&B musician Abra, we now have confirmation that Bella Thorne, Maude Apatow, Bill Skarsgard, Joel McHale, and Colman Domingo have all closed deals to star. Little is currently known about how each newcomer will factor into Levinson’s techno-thriller, but with filming set to commence this spring in Louisiana, we fully expect to learn more sooner rather than later.
As for the plot itself, an early logline reveals that Assassination Nation orbits around “four teenage girls in a small suburb who become the focus of unwanted, worldwide media attention after their personal information is leaked by an anonymous hacker.”

Author Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower ranks among the most familiar and cherished books of Gen Y teenagerdom, that ubiquitous lime green book about high school friendship and self-discovery. Since Chbosky himself wrote and directed the recent film adaptation of Perks, which comes out on DVD today, it's no surprise that the warmth and power of his epistolary novel truly comes to life on the big screen. What's slightly more surprising is the utter precision of the casting: Logan Lerman is perfect as the conscientious, but troubled Charlie; Emma Watson is lovable as his new friend Sam; but best of all, Ezra Miller is wonderful as the funny, charismatic, and Dr. Frankenfurter-impersonating gay character Patrick.

Teenage Wasteland: Elgin James Gives Us Teen Angst for Debut
A Sundance Lab creation, Elgin James’ debut, Little Birds is a strong first effort, one borne primarily from an interesting mutation of the professed director’s own life experiences, which he was at first going to film. Somehow, gangland activities turned into a coming of age tale of two adolescent females, and the result, while not entirely breaking new ground, manages to reach an affecting grace, one that manages to gear up into a tense boil.
Best friends Lily (Juno Temple) and Alison (Kay Panabaker), are continuously on the lookout for more exciting activities in their ramshackle Salton Sea town, where decaying plant matter permeates the air, and local denizens are either comfortable in their boredom or violent in their wish to escape from it. Chicago – The opening moments of Anne Renton’s feature debut, “The Perfect Family,” paint a typically cheery portrait of suburbia, complete with a sign displaying the generic tagline, “An Enjoyable Town.” It’s the sort of neighborhood audiences have seen countless times before in indies aiming to depict the “dark side” of small town America, a la “Blue Velvet.”
When uptight Catholic server, Eileen (Kathleen Turner), accidentally spills a handful of communion wafers and secretly shoves them in her mouth with the exquisite clumsiness of Lucille Ball at the chocolate factory, I was fully prepared for this film to devolve into a caustic slice of familial dysfunction along the lines of “Another Happy Day,” populated with shrill stereotypes and Puritanical basket cases. “The Perfect Family” could’ve easily been that movie, but it isn’t. In fact, it’s a much more tender and thoughtful picture than one would expect.

It was a magical evening at the New York Times Center last night for those lucky enough to be in attendance, for at long last, Jason Reitman brought his “Live Read” Series to NYC. The series began about six months ago when the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Lacma) asked Reitman if he had any ideas for programs. His idea was a simple one: to stage readings of classic screenplays live on stage, one time only for an audience of a few hundred people. As he told the NY Times recently, “I’d done table reads for my own screenplays, and I always thought they were so much fun. [So I thought], ‘Why couldn’t we do these for other classic screenplays and bring them to life?’ You can experience live theater, where you get to see plays produced by different directors and different casts, but there’s really nothing like that for movie scripts.

Sure, "Diner" is a landmark movie, one that launched numerous careers (including those of Kevin Bacon, Mickey Rourke, Ellen Barkin, and director Barry Levinson). But is it really the most influential movie of the last 30 years? Vanity Fair seems to think so. According to an article in the March 2012 issue, "Diner" -- released 30 years ago today, on March 5, 1982 -- is indirectly responsible for "Seinfeld," "The Office," "Pulp Fiction," and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." Such writers as Nick Hornby, Stephen Merchant, and Judd Apatow acknowledge its impact on the way they write scenes that others omit, scenes were guys reveal what matters most to them by chatting over coffee about things that don't matter at all. Like its trivia-obsessed characters, "Diner" is full of unspoken tales beneath the surface. Even fans may not know how closely life imitated art in the alliances, rivalries, pranks, and power games that helped make the movie...

Exclusive: Mandalay Vision has set Julian Jarrold to helm Exit 147, an indie thriller scripted by Travis Milloy. Cathy Schulman and Matthew Rhodes are producing for Mandalay Vision with Lenny Beckerman. Mandalay Vision is independently financing the film for a summer start. In the thriller, a young father driving cross country to see his daughter is stopped by a sheriff at Exit 147, and it turns into a psychological game of cat and mouse with deadly consequences. Jarrold directed Red Riding 1974, one leg of that film trilogy and also Kinky Boots, Becoming Jane and Brideshead Revisited. He’s repped by Wme and Independent Talent Group. Milloy scripted the 2009 film Pandorum. Mandalay Vision, which made The Kids Are All Right, Soul Surfer, Salvation Boulevard and Another Happy Day, is ramping up again under Schulman and Rhodes and will be generating several films this year. The Jack Black-Matthew McConaughey-starrer Bernie will be released this spring.

The Oscars are so close that we can already smell the fresh-ironed shirts, the mascara wiped away by thwarted nominees, and the post-Governor's Ball vomit, but our preparation coverage continues. Yesterday we picked out the directors, cinematographers and other below-the-line titles that we thought deserved to be sitting in the Kodak Theater on Monday, but somehow missed out.
Below, we've done the same with the thesps: five actors and five actresses who we wish got more traction than they did. Any of your own favorites left out here?
Best Actress - Charlize Theron - "Young Adult"
Given how unsparingly unlikable protagonist Mavis Gary seemed on the page, we weren't surprised when Charlize Theron failed to get much awards attention for her turn in Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody's "Young Adult." But that doesn't take away from the quality of the performance, one that stands with, and arguably even surpasses,...

Oscar Campaign Scandal Pt.2: Robert Wise's Oscar Ad a Rebuff to William Goldman's Attack on Martin Scorsese/Gangs Of New York Whether or not because of the furor over the Murray Weissman-Robert Wise (photo) ad, despite its ten nominations Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York failed to win a single Academy Award on Oscar night 2003. But if there was any ill will against Harvey Weinstein and Miramax's heavy-handed Oscar tactics, that certainly didn't prevent another Miramax release, Rob Marshall's musical Chicago, from winning that year's Best Picture Oscar. Things were different the following year, when Miramax's Anthony Minghella-directed Cold Mountain wasn't shortlisted in the Best Picture category. Whether because of the previous year's flap or because of Nicole Kidman's poor makeup job, that marked the first time in 11 years that a Miramax production wasn't in the running for the Best Picture...

Exclusive: I’ve learned that Ellen Barkin is in final negotiations to co-star in The New Normal, NBC’s comedy pilot from the Glee duo of Ryan Murphy and Allison Adler. The single-camera project, co-written by Glee co-creator Murphy and Adler and to be directed by Murphy, is described as a heartwarming comedy about a blended family of a gay couple, with Andrew Rannells playing one of the guys, and the woman who becomes a surrogate to help them start a family. Barkin will play the splashy role of the surrogate’s mother. 20th Century Fox TV is producing the project, with Murphy, Adler and Dante Di Loreto executive producing. Barkin was most recently seen in the indie Another Happy Day and making her Broadway debut in The Normal Heart, which earned her her a Tony Award last year.

Chicago – “Another Happy Day” is essentially the inverse of “Rachel Getting Married.” Instead of an unstable, self-pitying girl wreaking havoc on an otherwise pleasant wedding, we have a sensitive, otherwise pleasant woman driven mad by her unstable, self-pitying family…at a wedding, no less. I’ve seen war enemies with less animosity than this group of miserable basket cases.
Of course, weddings have routinely been a hotbed of family dysfunction typified by Robert Altman’s flawed yet woefully underrated 1978 satire, “A Wedding.” “Happy Day” is closer in spirit to Noah Baumbach’s caustic and somewhat repellant 2007 effort, “Margot at the Wedding,” albeit without the handheld photography. There’s a lot of talent on display that’s worth admiring, but the film is more depressing and drab than it is funny or insightful.

Chicago – In the new film, “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” there is a breakout performance that is simply mind-blowing. Playing opposite the conflicted mother – portrayed by the great Tilda Swinton – is Ezra Miller, as her son Kevin. The character is a teenager in crisis, motivated by forces beyond his control.
“We Need to Talk About Kevin” is remarkable because it casts no judgment as it presents the members of a typical American middle class family. In this circumstance, the son is born to be bad, and increases his erratic behavior in crossing over to adolescence. How Tilda Swinton reacts as his mother and John C. Reilly as his father is the consequence of a bad dream-like situation. The film is as real as it is exaggerated, and adds insight to the modern expectations of the “perfect” nuclear family.

Demi Moore, following her hospitalization Tuesday night, has dropped out of the film "Lovelace."
Moore is officially seeking professional help for exhaustion but is rumored to have a substance abuse problem. TMZ reports that the actress will no longer feature in the biopic of former porn star Linda Lovelace; Moore was set to play a small role as feminist activist Gloria Steinem, who took a very public stance against pornography.
Amanda Seyfried will star as Lovelace and Peter Sarsgaard as Lovelace's ex-husband and porn production manager Chuck Traynor. James Franco will play Hugh Hefner in a small role, while Hank Azaria in December signed on to play Jerry Damiano, the director of "Deep Throat."

DVD or Blu-ray? Redbox or Netflix? Streaming? Whatever your poison, here's the breakdown on all the week's new releases, from Joseph Gordon-Levitt's acclaimed cancer comedy to punching robots and totally 80s ghosts. Moviefone's Pick of the Week "50/50" What's It About? Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as a young man stricken with a bout of rare cancer; the film chronicles his attempted path to recovery and the complex emotional relationships he has with friends, family and lovers. See It Because: "50/50" is a real look at the physical and emotional struggle of fighting cancer; based on writer Will Reiser's own experiences with the disease, the movie is able to articulate the frustration, anger and fear that can come from the ordeal, without turning it into a corny melodrama that doesn't sound like the real conversations people have. Plus, it's not afraid to laugh at the situation, and it does a damn good job at being funny.

Ezra Miller is smart. Smarter than many adult actors in Hollywood, which is strange, since the kid is an 18-year-old high school dropout. With a penchant for 'honest' dark roles, Miller plays the maladjusted son in dysfunctional family flicks "Another Happy Day" and "We Need to Talk About Kevin" -- and boy, is he convincing. Thankfully, while on the phone from New York, Miller loses all the "psycho" vibes and comes across as a thoughtful, articulate soul out to perfect his art.
The roles he tackles aren't easy to portray (he's been haunted by nightmares, actually), but Miller plays them like a pro. Moviefone spoke with him about his response to Columbine, playing a psychopath and getting life advice from Andy Garcia.
Dude, I have to say it. Sometimes you terrify me.
I've heard that before! [Laughs] I'm thankful to say that, for the most part, it's been intentional. I haven't...

Is Iceland the hot new home of film composing? Maybe at least for the moment. Sigur Ros frontman Jónsi has found a new collaborator in Cameron Crowe, not only scoring "We Bought Zoo," but the director's next effort as well, and he's not the only native of Iceland to tune up a movie last year. Former metalhead turned producer and composer Ólafur Arnalds lent his skills to "Another Happy Day," the Sundance winner for Best Screenplay that found Ellen Barkin basking in rave reviews for her performance for much of 2011. Well, with the film, currently available digitally and on VOD (with a handful of theaters running it this weekend), Erased Tapes is currently pulling together a soundtrack release of Arnalds score for the film. And talking with Cmu, he fully credits Barkin for enabling him to land the gig. Director Sam Levinson had been listening to his music as he was putting together the movie,...

We Need to Talk About Kevin represents an immensely exciting piece of filmmaking from Lynne Ramsay (Ratcatcher, Morvern Callar). That might seem like an odd label for this adaptation of Lionel Shriver‘s best-selling novel, considering the relentlessly harrowing subject matter in question, but it’s hard to come up with any other phrase to describe the sheer vivacity of Ramsay‘s directorial approach. This is indeed a film that keeps your emotions in constant flux — terrorized by the actions of the titular character in one moment, happily floored by Ramsay’s consistently fresh choices the next.
It’s worth mentioning, too, that Ramsay, along with Rory Kinnear, wrote the film’s screenplay, which is a unique feat of adaptation in its own right. Like a few recent films — Sean Durkin‘s Martha Marcy May Marlene jumps immediately to mind — We Need to Talk About Kevin bleeds the past into the present,...

While there are some feminists who will argue that pornography can be empowering, Gloria Steinem isn't one of them. The pioneering women's rights activist was an important footnote in the life and saga of "Deep Throat" actress Linda Lovelace, and in the upcoming biopic, she'll make a brief appearance with a big star filling her shoes. Variety reports that Demi Moore -- experiencing a renaissance of sorts thanks to roles in "Another Happy Day" and "Margin Call" -- will play Steinem in a cameo role in "Lovelace." The founder of Ms. Magazine was a source of support and somewhat of a voice for Lovelace. Steinem penned the article "The Real Linda Lovelace" which accused Lovelace's husband, Chuck Traynor, of perpetuating the story that the porn actress "loved to be sexually used and humiliated." Steinem also wrote the introduction to Lovelace's memoir "Out Of Bondage," and also appeared at...

Demi Moore is preparing to fight for women's lib.
The "Striptease" star will be playing the role of Gloria Steinem in "Lovelace," one of at least two Linda Lovelace biopics currently in production, according to Variety. For the record, this is the one starring Amanda Seyfried as the "Deep Throat" porn star.
Gloria Steinem is a feminist, journalist, political activist and one of the most prominent leaders of the women's liberation movement in the 1960s and '70s. The biopic of former porn star-turned-activist Linda Lovelace has added three new cast members. Chief amongst the new stars announced on Monday is Demi Moore, who will play the role of feminist and women's liberation activist Gloria Steinem.
Moore will get a short cameo in the film, which will star Amanda Seyfried as Lovelace and Peter Sarsgaard as her ex-husband and porn production manager Chuck Traynor. It is a bit ironic that she'll play Steinem, as one of her best known roles is that of a stripper in "Striptease." Featuring as Lovelace's co-star in "Deep Throat," the iconic porn film that shot Lovelace to film, will be Adam Brody, who is best known for his work on "The Oc." Eric Roberts has also been added to the cast as a lie detector expert.
In December, James Franco was reported to be in talks to join the film as Hugh Hefner another celebrity cameo.

Director Sam Levinson frequently films his girlfriend, actress Ellen Barkin -- most recently in Another Happy Day with Demi Moore. But the latest video out of the director's hands is a controversial one: early on new year's day, as the two were walking home in New York City, Levinson recorded Barkin in an encounter with a NYPD officer on the street, and Barkin appears upset as the officer puts his hands on her and moves her to the sidewalk. Levinson, 26, used Twitvid to post what appears to be cellphone footage, and Barkin, 57, began tweeting angrily about the confrontation.
