A decade ago, Legendary Pictures secured the rights to Godzilla and other characters owned and created by the Japanese company Toho so they could launch a cinematic universe they call the MonsterVerse – and they also secured the rights to the King Kong character so he could be part of their MonsterVerse as well. Things got started with Godzilla in 2014, and since then the universe has expanded with Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, the animated series Skull Island, the live-action series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. A third Godzilla / Kong mash-up is now in the works – and Deadline has learned that the iconic monsters are being joined in the cast by Kaitlyn Dever this time around.
Dever’s credits include Good Grief, No One Will Save You, Next Goal Wins, Rosaline, Dear Evan Hanson, Last Man Standing, Booksmart, Justified,...

Shailene Woodley has been credited with delivering some of the most entertaining pieces of all time, including her fan-favorite Divergent film series and even the 2013 romcom The Spectacular Now. That said, the fact that she once nearly got kicked out of a $177 million film co-starring George Clooney because of her overacting sounds unbelievable. And yet, it couldn’t be truer.

Turns out, when she auditioned for the 2011 comedy-drama masterpiece The Descendants, the actress was called out about her acting out the scene in a bit too overly exaggerated manner, leading to her nearly getting kicked out of it. In fact, if she hadn’t begged her agents to get a callback for this particular piece, perhaps Woodley may have even ended up losing out on the role!

Back in late September 2024, 20th Century Studios announced that it would be remaking the 1992 thriller classic The Hand That Rocks the Cradle with Longlegs actress Maika Monroe leading the cast. Now, we've just learned of a potential new cast addition. Scream queen Mary Elizabeth Winstead is reportedly in talks to join the remake, starring opposite Monroe.
Conversations are currently being had about Winstead joining the movie, but she has not officially signed on yet. Fingers crossed, an official agreement is reached because we would love to see her and fellow scream queen Maika Monroe act together, especially after knowing who they will be playing in the movie.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley are reuniting for the murder mystery thriller Killer Heat. Gordon-Levitt has proven to be one of the most versatile actors since breaking out as a childhood star with Angels in the Outfield and 3rd Rock from the Sun, having frequently collaborated with Rian Johnson going back to his directorial debut with Brick, while also finding acclaim in the dramedy world with the likes of 50/50 and his own directorial effort, Don Jon. Woodley similarly found acclaim in her teenage years before finding success in the YA genre with The Spectacular Now, The Fault in Our Stars and the Divergent franchise.

One of the standout memories from my last semester of college was hearing the strong word-of-mouth around the breakout from that year’s Sundance Film Festival, “Whiplash.” I can remember the excitement around a new, potentially generational filmmaker bursting onto the scene, as well as an intense, young actor starting to make his mark in films like “Rabbit Hole,” “The Spectacular Now,” and now this. Moreover, having just binged the HBO prison drama “Oz,” I was thrilled by the possibility of one its ensemble cast members, J.K. Simmons, taking on a role that required him to lean on his more sociopathic abilities.
The first time I saw the film, winner of both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize, it was followed by a Q&a with Simmons in which he spoke on the animalistic nature of his character, jazz instructor Terence Fletcher, and how, despite Damien Chazelle’s youthful appearance,...

Both Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller had their careers elevated by their work in the Divergent series, despite its shortcomings. The Spectacular Now, a lesser-known project starring Woodley and Teller in 2013, showcased their talent and received critical acclaim. While Divergent failed to maintain its success, The Spectacular Now remains a successful and authentic adaptation in the YA genre.
Although they arguably became most prominent after starring in the Divergent series, Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller have a collaboration history that extends far beyond the YA franchise. The pair were among a generation of up-and-comers in the 2010s, with career-making roles in projects like The Fault In Our Stars and Whiplash. However, Divergent helped elevate both Woodley and Teller to new heights, introducing them to a wider audience and establishing their franchise credentials.

On the first of August, Netflix dropped so many great new releases, including Fire Country season 1, Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, two Dr. Seuss movies, multiple Chucky movies and more horror, White Chicks, The Spectacular Now, and plenty of great picks for a binge-watch weekend.

Few people nowadays probably can’t say that they have a favorite film company because of how much the industry has changed. The film genre has become oversaturated with superhero films, leading most people to start a conversation by asking, “Marvel or DC?” We don’t talk about what other companies are putting out or even acknowledge the future films that are coming out. Also, the way Walt Disney Studios has bought other companies makes it challenging for the common audience to step out and watch anything else. However, one company has been talked about a lot recently due to the films they’re distributing or making, and it's the A24 company. Miles Teller is staying in the Navy — maybe because he’s got nowhere else to go.
Deadline reports that the “Top Gun: Maverick” star is set to star in a modern retelling of “An Officer and a Gentleman,” the 1982 romantic drama starring Richard Gere.
“An Officer and a Gentleman” was a massive hit that turned Gere and Debra Winger into two of the biggest stars of the era. It follows Zack Mayo, a troubled young naval pilot cadet, and his relationships with his demanding drill instructor Sgt. Emil Foley (Louis Gossett Jr.) and Paul Pokrifki, a woman who lives in the town near the base. Gossett won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance, making Oscars history as the first Black winner in the category. Paramount is updating “An Officer and a Gentleman” with Miles Teller set to star.
Teller will take on the lead role in the modern take on the 1982 classic starring Richard Gere, which was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning the best original song prize for “Up Where We Belong” and marking Louis Gossett Jr.’s historic achievement of becoming the first Black best supporting actor Oscar winner.
“An Officer and a Gentleman” centered on Gere’s Zack Mayo, an aspiring Navy aviator who clashes with his hard-nosed drill instructor, Gunnery Sgt. Emil Foley (Gossett) while navigating a budding romance with Paula (Debra Winger), a factory worker with dreams of getting out of her small town. The Taylor Hackford-directed romantic drama was also a box office smash, earning $190 million globally.
Dana Fox wrote the latest draft of the script for the new movie, following a draft written by Matt Johnson.

The Divergent series cast includes rising stars such as Shailene Woodley and Theo James, who gained fame from the movies. The Divergent series was canceled due to lack of success, leading the original cast to move on to other projects. Characters like Tris and Four faced themes of loyalty and sacrifice, evolving into formidable leaders in the faction-divided world.
The Divergent series main cast includes 12 prominent actors, many of whom rose to fame during the 2010s. Some of them may not have been big names when these movies came out in 2014-2016, but all of them are now bonafide stars on film and TV. The Divergent series refers to the trilogy of movies based on books by Veronica Roth, titled Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant. The three Divergent movies starred Shailene Woodley and Theo James in the lead roles, with a massive ensemble cast, including veterans, rising stars, and several award-winning actors.

The Fantastic Four is gearing up to begin shooting later this summer and Marvel Studios has now enlisted a cinematographer in Jess Hall.
He's no stranger to period pieces and previously worked with director Matt Shakman on WandaVision and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Other credits include Chevalier, Ghost in the Shell, Hot Fuzz, and The Spectacular Now.
The news that he'll serve as The Fantastic Four's Director of Photography comes our way from Hall's website. Shakman and Hall reteaming isn't a surprise, and based on her work in WandaVision, he won't struggle to make this movie look visually distinct.
In other news, Hollywood insider Matt Beloni recently weighed in on Marvel Studios' upcoming projects in an edition of his podcast titled, "The Best and Worst Media Mergers of the 21st Century."

Movies like The Fault in Our Stars offer a mix of romance and tragedy that can be both harrowing and inspiring. The emotional yet engrossing story captures the beauty and tragedy of young love in a memorable way. Other films like Remember Me, The Spectacular Now, and Paper Towns strike a similar balance in exploring love amidst life's difficulties.
Movies like The Fault In Our Stars may not always be easy to watch, but sometimes audiences are looking for that effective mix of romance and tragedy. The movie is based on the popular young adult novel by John Green and stars Shailene Woodley as Hazel and Ansel Elgort as Gus, two teens who meet in a cancer support group. They fall in love, showing each other the joys of life while they face the reality that they might not have much of it left.

This is one of best discoveries of Sundance 2024. A knock out - loved every second of it. 2024 is a big year for the talented Taiwanese-American filmmaker Sean Wang, who is originally from Fremont, CA. Not only does he have this feature debut movie premiering at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, and it's getting rave reviews (and it won the Audience Award), he's also probably going to win an Academy Award in March for his short film Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó about his grannies (it's also streaming on Disney+ in February). Sundance has a memorably rich tradition of premiering many of the best coming-of-age films of all-time, ranging from 500 Days of Summer to Napoleon Dynamite to Little Miss Sunshine to The Spectacular Now to Clerks to Eighth Grade to Boyhood, and so many others over the years. Sean Wang's Dìdi (弟弟) instantly joins the ranks as yet another outstanding coming-of-age...

After directing three “Night at the Museum” movies, Shawn Levy didn’t want to be confined to directing family comedies for the rest of his career. If you’re doing something successfully, he told IndieWire, it’s easy to be “pigeonholed” by Hollywood into that one thing.
But he’s been far from limited under the banner of his own production company, 21 Laps. Levy and his company have been prolific hit-makers since it launched in 2006, and he has produced and directed everything from indie darlings (“The Spectacular Now”), ambitious Best Picture nominees (“Arrival”), studio blockbuster satires (“Free Guy“), prestige limited series (“All the Light We Cannot See”), Stephen King horror movies (“The Boogeyman”), and the biggest Netflix show ever (“Stranger Things”), all of which depart from the family-friendly event movies on which he cut his teeth.
“You need to refuse to be limited by everyone else’s assumptions,” Levy told IndieWire during a recent interview.

[This story contains spoilers from the finale of Lessons in Chemistry.]
Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson has had supporting roles in romantic comedies like The Spectacular Now and Trainwreck. But in Lessons in Chemistry, she gets to tell a love story of her own.
“Part of my initial interest in this story is that love depictions are so sacred and so important, and how they come to you and why they come to you is part of the magic of this life,” says Larson, who stars in the lead role of Elizabeth Zott in the Apple TV+ series. “It also means it’s very hard to grapple with.”
Deciding how best to show that struggle in bringing the narrative drawn from Bonnie Garmus’ novel of the same to TV is something Larson worked on closely with as an executive producer with showrunner Lee Eisenberg, who developed the series. Embodying Zott, a chemist who can no longer rely on...

The film Robots doesn't necessarily have a star-studded cast, but it does feature a roster of performers with recognizable resumes. Distributed by indie powerhouse Neon and directed by the team of Casper Christensen and Anthony Hines, Robots tells the story of two con artists who use robot doubles of themselves to do menial tasks and must team up when their robot duplicates fall in love. Like a mix between Black Mirror and a classic romantic comedy, Robots uses irreverent and often political humor to get its point across.
After receiving a limited theatrical release, Robots arrived on streaming where it was subsequently lambasted by critics (via Rotten Tomatoes). The most prevalent criticism was leveled at its uneven script and generally poor storytelling which couldn't really find a synthesis between its disparate ideas. Thank You for Your Service finds Miles Teller leading an ensemble cast of real-life characters as it explores the mental health struggles that many military personnel face in real life. Based on the 2013 non-fiction book of the same name by journalist David Finkel, the 2017 movie doubles as a war drama and a biography. The narrative puts the spotlight on U.S. Army veterans of the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment during their deployment in Iraq in 2007. Instead of just glorifying their patriotism, Thank You for Your Service humanizes these soldiers and delves into their struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder (Ptsd) after returning home.
Jason Hall, the Oscar-nominated writer of the similarly-themed biopic American Sniper, helmed Thank You For four Service as both director and screenwriter. Apart from its star-studded cast, the war movie also boasts an original song titled “Freedom Cadence” by Bruce Springsteen that plays during the closing credits. Despite bombing at the box office,...

A version of this story about Scott Neustadter and “Daisy Jones and the Six” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Scott Neustadter wasn’t born when the rock ‘n’ roll scene depicted in “Daisy Jones & the Six” was taking place in Los Angeles in the late 1960s through the mid ’70s, and neither were most of the cast and creators of the limited series on Amazon’s Prime Video. But Neustadter and his writing partner Michael H. Weber, who’d written “500 Days of Summer,” “The Spectacular Now” and “The Disaster Artist” before they developed “Daisy Jones,” had to become experts in the era they recreated for the series based on Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel.
Did they get it all right? Of course not. (Read on for some nit-picking from somebody who is old enough to have been there.) But for the most part,...

The Emmy race has never been more crowded for those working behind the camera on TV’s most acclaimed series.
While these directors below have never won Emmys, their work on this year’s juggernaut dramas, side-splitting comedies and affecting limited series could change that come September.
Lee Sung Jin
As creator and showrunner of Netflix’s limited series “Beef,” Jin guides the series from its inciting road rage incident all the way to its cliff-diving conclusion. In addition to penning several episodes, the veteran comedy writer finally steps behind the camera to make his directorial debut on the finale.
Peter Hoar
Fresh off directing Max’s “It’s a Sin,” Hoar helmed “Long, Long Time,” the third episode of HBO’s freshman hit “The Last of Us” — possibly the most-loved episode of television this year. The feature-length outing tells the sweeping tale of Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett...

With a stellar cast and a memorable soundtrack full of original rock ‘n’ roll music – it's not surprising that critics had a lot to say about Daisy Jones & the Six. Adapted from Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2019 novel of the same name, Daisy Jones & the Six charts the rise and fall of a fictional band (heavily inspired by Fleetwood Mac) in the Los Angeles music scene of the 1970s. Riley Keough and Sam Claflin star as the titular Daisy Jones and fellow singer-songwriter Billy Dunne, respectively, whose tumultuous relationship forms the backbone of the story.
Throughout March 2023, Daisy Jones & the Six dropped 10 episodes – three in its first week, three in its second week, and two in its third and fourth weeks – encompassing the entire story of Reid’s wildly popular novel. The miniseries adaptation was spearheaded by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, the screenwriting duo behind such...

TV’s Spanish-language Univision network will broadcast Super Bowl Lvii next year, adding a new entrant to the usual coterie of English-language outlets that show the game.
The deal was struck in partnership with the NFL and CBS Sports, which has the rights to show the game in English.
The details were released as part of TelevisaUnivision’s annual “upfront” presentation, when U.S. networks try to sell the bulk of their commercial programming ahead of their next programming cycle.
The company also disclosed that its ViX streaming outlet has more than 30 million monthly active users globally, with Pierluigi Gazzolo, the CEO of ViX noting that ” 80% of consumption on Vix is content no one else has and, importantly, 63% of users on ViX are incremental to the massive audience we serve on linear, which means greater cross-platform reach for all of you.”
