Meaney played the character from 1987-1999, appearing in 225 episodes. For the first 10 years of his movie acting career, Dwayne Johnson was hungry to earn his bonafides as a serious performer. Oh sure, he was more than willing to play to the cheap seats by starring in stuff like "The Scorpion King" and "Doom." But this was also the era in which the wrestling legend worked with "Donnie Darko" director Richard Kelly on his gonzo cult curiosity "Southland Tales" and gleefully preened in front of a mirror as an out-and-proud gay bodyguard in F. Gary Gray's "Get Shorty" sequel "Be Cool." Having yet to establish a clean-cut brand for himself, the 2000s saw The Rock taking the kind of risks he would shirk for a decade after finally making it big in the movies.
That extended to Johnson's action films as well. When The Rock showed up as Luke Hobbs in 2011's "Fast Five" (only one of the...

Plot: An aging gangster attempts to reconnect with his children and rectify the mistakes in his past, but the criminal underworld won’t loosen their grip willingly.
Review: Over the last sixteen years, Liam Neeson has consistently delivered a string of variations on his 2008 hit Taken. Outside of a handful of exceptions, the Oscar-nominated actor has made movie after movie about cops and soldiers using their particular sets of skills to take down bad guys who underestimate the elderly protagonist. As those projects have begun to blur together, Neeson has had some tricks up his sleeve with voice work in The Lego Movie, comedic turns in A Million Ways To Die In The West, and the occasional big-budget offering. The ones that utilize Neeson’s gravitas and everyman demeanor have stood out from the over fifty projects he has acted on or voiced during that span. You can add Absolution to that shortlist.

Liam Neeson's upcoming film Absolution continues a trend that started nearly two decades ago in one of his most iconic films. Neeson, who turned 72 in 2024, is keeping up his momentum as one of the best leading actors in action movies working in Hollywood today with 2024's Absolution. Many of Neeson's best action films are essentially one-person army tales that portray the talented actor's physical tour-de-force performances. Absolution appears to fit right in that category.
The trailer of Absolution stars Neeson as an aging gangster trying to escape his dark past. The film, directed by Hans Peter Moland and written by Tony Gayton, also stars Ron Perlman, Frankie Shaw, and Daniel Diemer. Neeson, an Academy Award nominee for 1993's Schindler's List, has nearly 200 television and movie acting credits to his name after making his feature film debut in 1978's Pligrim's Progress.
Absolution will be released on November 1, 2024.

Exclusive: Another true crime limited series franchise, The Thing About..., is looking to join the likes of American Crime Story, Monster and Dr. Death. Peacock is developing The Thing About Tommy, from writer Bruce Marshall Romans and the companies behind the 2022 NBC limited series The Thing About Pam, NBC News Studios and Blumhouse, sources tell Deadline. UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.
The Thing About Tommy is inspired by the true story of Thomas Randolph, nicknamed “Black Widower,” who has been married six times and four of those wives ended up dead.
Like The Thing About Pam, which chronicled Pam Hupp’s involvement in the 2011 murder of Betsy Faria, The Thing About Tommy stems from Dateline’s coverage of the case. (The venerable NBC newsmagazine profiled Randolph in the multi-part series The Widower.)

With the highly anticipated Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 expected in 2025, Captain Christopher Pike actor Anson Mount's breakout role in another series could provide the perfect binge-watch in the meantime. Mount has a varied career, from small roles in Sex in the City to Law and Order. He didn't become Captain Pike until joining Star Trek: Discovery season 2's cast in 2019. Before taking to the stars, though, Mount starred in his breakout role in a very different setting.
In 2011, AMC released a Western called Hell on Wheels, and Anson Mount landed the starring role as battle-worn soldier Cullen Bohannon. Set in the late 19th century and following the story of a traveling town following the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, Hell on Wheels couldn't be further removed from the Star Trek timeline. Yellowstone has become one of the biggest shows on television, as it should because the series is a brilliant piece of art, which deserves every praise it gets. Created by Taylor Sheridan, the neo-Western drama series revolves around the Dutton family who own the largest ranch in America. While there is a lot of infighting amongst the family they must all stand together to protect what’s there from several enemies. Yellowstone stars Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Luke Grimes, Kelsey Asbille, Wes Bentley, Jefferson White, and Ian Bohen. Now, that Yellowstone is ending soon with Part 2 of its Season 5, we are here to suggest some similar shows while you wait for the final Yellowstone episodes.

Colm Meaney is best known for playing Miles O'Brien in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, but he's also clocked up a long list of other critically acclaimed acting roles across film and television.
The Irish actor counts the likes of Hell on Wheels, Layer Cake, The Damned United, and The Journey among his credits, and most recently stars alongside Charlotte Kirk in Neil Marshall's action-packed new British action-crime thriller, Duchess.
While Meaney is only in one lengthy scene as the protagonist's father, "Mad Frank," it's another phenomenal performance which sees the actor embrace his dark side.
"Oh, I think [Frank is] straight-up bad," he tells us in the video below. "He says so himself, 'I was born like this. I'm rotten to the core. I'll never be any different, don't fool yourself. You're not going to get redemption here.' He's got a very clear...

The character of Transporter Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney) first appeared in "Encounter at Farpoint," the pilot episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation." For many episodes, he was basically a background character, usually present to deliver a line or two of techno-jargon and to beam the senior staff from the ship to a planet and back. With each appearance, though, audiences began to get more details about O'Brien's life. He used to build ships in bottles as a boy, for instance. O'Brien would marry and have a child. All told, O'Brien appeared in 52 episodes of the show, sometimes starring in his own stories.
The character became popular enough to be carried over to "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" in 1993, on which he was a regular character. On "Deep Space Nine," O'Brien became even more awesome, serving as the chief engineer on the station, having to familiarize himself with dated Cardassian technology,...

Actor Anson Mount is well known for playing the role of Captain Christopher Pike in the new-generation Star Trek shows Star Trek: Discovery and Strange New Worlds. Pike is known for his stellar leadership and inclusive style of managing the ship. Mount’s performance has been acclaimed by many critics and fans alike.
Mount mentioned in an interview that the one difference that makes Pike a stellar captain is his ability to take opinions from other members of the crew and then make a decision. While Pike does have this practice in the show, he is not the only captain to do so. Sir Patrick Stewart’s legendary Captain Picard has done this many times in The Next Generation.

Alan Scarfe, the classically trained British Canadian actor known for his turns as bad guys in Double Impact and Lethal Weapon III and as Dr. Bradley Talmadge on the Upn sci-fi series Seven Days, has died. He was 77.
Scarfe died April 28 of colon cancer at his home in Longueuil, Quebec, his family announced.
Survivors include his son, actor Jonathan Scarfe (ER, Raising the Bar, Hell on Wheels, Van Helsing).
Born in England and raised in Vancouver, Scarfe portrayed the Romulans Tokath and Admiral Mendak on episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1991 and 1993 and was another alien, the powerful Magistrate Augris, on a 1995 installment of Star Trek: Voyager.
“Science fiction on film and television, especially if you are playing some kind of alien character with fantastic make-up, is great for actors with a strong stage background,” he said in a 2007 interview. “The productions need that kind of size and intensity of performance.

Plot: Five women participate in a hiking retreat but only four come out the other side. Federal agents Aaron Falk and Carmen Cooper head into the mountains hoping to find their informant still alive.
Review: We reviewed the Australian mystery drama The Dry a couple of years ago. We enjoyed Eric Bana’s first Australian film after moving to Hollywood and found director Robert Connolly’s adaptation of Jane Harper’s novel to be refreshing. That film told the story of a federal investigator who returns home to investigate the murder of a childhood friend, which bears a distinct connection to a crime he himself was accused of decades prior. Bana and Connolly have reunited for the second novel in the Aaron Falk trilogy, Force of Nature. Some love to chill with an old familiar rom-com, while others prefer witnessing Liam Neeson ruthlessly hunt people down for the sake of revenge. For those in the latter category, consider making Seraphim Falls your latest comfort watch. The 2006 film stars Neeson as a former Civil War colonel who’s on a mission to take down a disgraced officer — played by Ireland’s favorite James Bond, Pierce Brosnan.
In the style of an old-fashioned Western, the allegorical film follows the war vets as they duke it out across the American West. Seraphim Falls was the feature directorial debut of television director David Von Ancken, who died in 2021. It was co-written by Von Ancken and Abby Everett Jaques.

Classic Western themes have influenced modern television series, blending with other genres to create unique and modern stories. Series like "Deadwood," "The Mandalorian," and "Yellowstone" have transported Western themes to new settings, such as space and modern society. Shows like "Preacher," "Cowboy Bebop," and "Firefly" have taken elements from the classic Western genre and incorporated them into supernatural, sci-fi, and adventure narratives.
The classic Western genre may not be as popular today as it once was, but its influence has permeated throughout modern television, and without it there are plenty of television series that would not exist today. The stories of cowboys, outlaws, and gunmen traversing across the Wild West have now been transported into new settings and blended with other genres to create something that took the best of classic Westerns and gave it a modern feel. Many of today’s TV shows still echo Western themes of individuality,...

“The Gilded Age,” Julian Fellowes’ critically lauded follow-up to “Downton Abbey,” has returned for a second season on HBO. Although “The Gilded Age” slightly alters the formula that made “Downton Abbey” so popular, swapping out turn-of-the-century England for a rapidly developing America in the late 1800s, it takes place just a few decades before its predecessor. Does that just reflect Fellowes’ fascination with a particular period? Or should we take it as a sign from a master of the genre that this is the ideal setting for a period piece TV show?

John Shiban has been named executive producer and showrunner for “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” NBC announced on Thursday.
The Christopher Meloni-led “Law & Order”spinoff, which has gone through a series of showrunners since its debut in April 2021, is set to air its fourth season midseason.
He replaces Sean Jablonski, who stepped down in March, having been named to the position in Sept. 2022 after Bryan Goluboff’s exit. Shiban was an executive producer on the Netflix crime series “Ozark,” which starred Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. He was nominated for both an Emmy and a WGA Award for writing the 2020 episode “Boss Fight.”
Previously, he was under an overall deal at Sony Television while serving as showrunner and executive producer of the Hulu series “Shut Eye.
