After Kammo departs with her son, her ex-husband Ravi remembers the days when they returned to their homes after completion of post graduation in journalism and started facing the impact of wide gap between their status.
While Ravi's Sub Editor father Vishnu Dutt has chosen his friend Dhyanchand's daughter Usha for his son, Kammo's haughty brother Kirpal despises the idea that his sister marries a boy from a middle class family.
Vishnu invites Dhyan Chand and his family for lunch. Kammo's elder sister Simran arrives with her husband's brother Alok as family wants Kammo to marry him. Ravi receives a call from worried Kammo at his friend Surinder's house.
Kammo tells Alok about her affair and the nice guy leaves after taking the blame of rejection on himself. However Kirpal understands what actually has happened. Kammo gets stunned when her father asks her who Ravi is.
Kammo's father Chowdhari Kartar tells Kammo that he wants to meet Ravi. On Kammo's insistence Ravi leaves for her city Patiala and disappointed Dhyanchand cancels his family lunch at Vishnu's house.
Chowdhari tries to convince Ravi emotionally that he will be doing injustice to Kammo by marrying her while Kirpal blatantly insults him. Kammo remains unaware of Ravi's arrival. Ravi has to spend night at a Police Station.
Humiliation makes Ravi go into depression and he stops taking Kammo's calls. Kirpal gives Kammo photographs of some prospective grooms. Kammo burns them all.
Ravi finally responds to Kammo's repeated calls and asks her if she had the courage to leave her house and marry him immediately. Fathers of both lovers try to make them realize the contrast between romanticism and hard realities of life.
Having faced a similar situation in the past, Simran makes Kammo realize that her decision at this point will decide her fate. As days pass, Ravi loses his hope and gives his consent to invite the Dhyan Chand family at home. .
Just when Ravi's marital alliance with Usha seems to be almost decided, Kammo, escorted by Surinder, appears at the door. Surinder takes Kammo to his house to avoid an embarrassing situation. Kammo's disappearance shakes her family.
Kirpal's efforts to take Kammo back home through intimidation fail due to bold stand by Kammo, Vishnu and Ravi. Vishnu Dutt gets composed two marriage invitation cards from the two families and takes them to Chowdhari's house.
Chowdhari agrees for the marriage to save his reputation and Vishnu ensures that the pre-engagement ceremony is well publicized. Hurt for their different reasons, Kirpal and Dhyanchand's wife Savitri refuse to attend the ceremony.
Ravi takes up job in a magazine published by a progressive couple Ramkishan and Kamla. Determined to marry her daughter before Ravi's marriage, Savitri hastily settles Usha's marriage with an NRI boy suggested by her cousin Kaushalya.
After Dhyan Chand leaves for Amritsar for his daughter's marriage, it is found that Usha's proposed groom is a drugs addict fraud. Vishnu and Surinder rush in a taxi to stop the ceremony.
When Vishnu and Surinder reach the venue, ceremony is already over. Soon another shocking fact is revealed that Trilok was already married. However Trilok tells his wife Usha that he procured marriage certificate only to settle in Canada.
Despite his disapproval of the marriage, Kirpal comes to attend at the 11th hour. Ravi refuses to visit Chowdhari's house where he was insulted. He also doesn't accept any gifts from his father-in-law. His adamant attitude pinches Kammo.
Ravi goes to Amritsar. He works round the clock and returns early. Finding that Kammo has gone to her parental home he insists her to return, but refuses to come to fetch her. Kirpal drops Kammo outside her in-laws' house.
Ravi comes to know that Usha's swindler husband has gone absconding. Ravi takes minor differences between his mother and wife too seriously. Alok's visit in connection with a marriage proposal catalyses these trifles.
Ravi shifts to Amritsar along with Kammo who is pregnant but reluctant to become a mother. Hurt by dispute, Kammo has to visit her doctor. Ravi scolds her with a misunderstanding that she has aborted her baby.
Ravi refuses to visit his in-laws' house even when Chowdhari meets an accident. Kammo's refusal to visit Ravi's parents when Vishnudutt gets heart attack escalates the dispute and she leaves home, forced to leave behind her child Hitu.
Both Ravi and Kammo realize their mistakes and decide for reconciliation. However Kirpal manipulates in such a way that both sign the divorce papers with a misunderstanding that the other one has initiated this. Kammo migrates to Canada.
In Canada, Surinder tells Kammo that Ravi did not initiate divorce. But by then Ravi has married divorcee Usha. After 6 years Kammo contacts her ex in-laws to get Hitu's custody whom Usha loves as much as she loves her own daughter.
Hitu is told about his real mother and sent with Ravi. Ravi receives Kammo and stays in a hotel at Patiala to complete legal formalities for transfer of Hitu's custody. Kammo snubs Kirpal for having ruined her marriage.
The fact that Ravi has not forgotten his first love pinches Usha. To fulfill Kammo's wish, Ravi's takes her to his brother Veeru's house, but she gets a cold treatment from him and his wife Surabhi.
Surabhi tries to make Ravi realize the emotional torture that Usha is suffering. Kammo accompanies Ravi to Jalandhar, meets his parents, and returns without seeing Usha. Surinder advises Ravi not to ride on two boats.
Ravi says a final good bye to Kammo and Hitu. Kammo asks Ravi not to come to airport to see them off as presence of her father and brother will create an embarrassing situation. Ravi returns to his family.
