In 1971, the 300-or-so people pawing through cardboard boxes of dusty comic books couldn't have possibly imagined that they were standing in what would become the cradle of nerd civilization. From a small meetup for diehard geeks, San Diego Comic-Con has grown into one of the largest and most feverishly anticipated pop-cultural events of the year. Thousands upon thousands of industry types, journalists, the devout faithful (and the suckers they've handsomely paid to stand in line as proxies) and cosplaying fans of all stripes will descend upon the city from July...

Oh, God, Comedy Central’s Drunk History is so hilarious if you’re in the right mood, and probably even if you aren’t. “Detroit” featured guest stars Luke and Owen Wilson (pictured, playing the Kellogg brothers) along with Jason Schwartzman as Ralph Nader, Richard Reihele as James Roche, Ken Marino as Houdini, and Alfred Molina as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. So, what’d we learn?
Key ‘Drunk History’ Lessons for the week of August 14, 2013
–John Kellogg (Owen Wilson) used to advise the patients of his sanitarium in Battle Creek, Mich: “You need to take at least two solid, ropey poops per day.

With the small screen dry spell of August upon us, we are back to quench your thirst for quality television with suggestions of more offbeat shows that you might not have thought to check out. First we sang the praises of Hannibal, and last week endorsed binge-watching Orange is the New Black. But this week’s Best Show You’re Not Watching cocktail is of a decidedly stronger proof.
Drunk History takes a brilliantly bizarre premise and milks it for all it’s worth: for each segment, a comic or writer gets intoxicated and recounts a major event in American history. Then famous actors re-enact that event, as per the drunk storyteller’s account – and usually lip-syncing their lines to the comic’s drunken, slurred speech.
This should, by all rights, be extremely stupid. But for various reasons, it is not. Here’s why you really need to check it...

The TV comedy genre is hard to predict nowadays. Most of the shows end up pandering to the lowest common denominator of TV viewers, writing simplistic jokes that deal almost exclusively in sexual innuendos (and not clever ones, either).
When a truly great comedy comes along, it gets accolade after accolade for its ingenuity. We tend to remember these shows well past their expiration dates. The 90s were defined by the likes of Seinfeld, Friends, and Frasier; similarly, the 2000s will be remembered for The Office (both the U.K. and U.S. versions), 30 Rock, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Even Comedy Central, a network dedicated to all things funny, struggles to create decent original shows. Most of the shows feature popular comedians and their relatively poor attempts at sketch variety shows; however, every now and then, a genuinely funny show comes along. In 2013, that show is Drunk History.

Drunk History made its television debut on Tuesday, July 9 on Comedy Central. The program originally aired as a web series on Funny or Die way back in August 2007 and features inebriated comedians recounting classic events from America’s past by way of slurred speech and celebrity reenactments in period costumes. Critics were split about the series’ move from the web to small screen, but viewer’s were more enthusiastic. According to our friends at RatingsIntel, a television research firm that puts TV ratings into context, 907,000 viewers tuned into Drunk History’s TV premiere, and the program came in third in its time slot in key demographics versus other cable shows. Drunk History performed better than it’s 9:30Pm Et Comedy Central lead-in of Tosh.0. "Drunk History" premieres tonight at ten on Comedy Central, taking the beloved Internet video series and stretching it into a full half-hour show, becoming the latest entry in a noble tradition of televised intoxication. Some instances of onscreen drunkenness are sort of tragic and depressing (say, Ruthie on "The Real World: Hawaii"), but there are plenty of gleeful, goofy instances, too.

In order to promote the Tuesday, July 9 television premiere of Drunk History, Comedy Central is filling its Facebook page with a heavy serving of revisionist history spiked with humor. Texts between America’s Founding Fathers reveal Thomas Jefferson may or may not have written the Declaration of Independence under the influence, newfound maps tell a story that William H. Seward may or may not have made the Alaska Purchase after falling in like with the North Pacific land’s alcohol establishments, and photos show the crack in the Liberty Bell may or may not have been caused by a couple of inebriated revolutionaries. If the Adam McKay, Will Ferrell, and Gary Sanchez Productions produced program is as funny as it’s social media marketing campaign, the show won’t stumble in it’s transition from the web to TV. Here’s something to lessen the thrill for Community fans excited about creator Dan Harmon‘s return: Vulture broke the news that Donald Glover will only appear in five (out of the thirteen ordered) episodes this season, as Glover wanted time to focus on his music. While that’s good news for fans of Glover’s rapper persona Childish Gambino, that means Community viewers are getting eight episodes of Abed without Troy.

The stars of Canadian cult comedy Trailer Park Boys can hope for new episodes soon. The series’ three lead actors — Robb Wells, John Paul Tremblay and Mike Smith — have purchased the rights to the series with an eye to putting new episodes online.

Eva Mendes is mostly known for her work in big-budget studio flicks, and she isn't sure why. "I have actually done a lot more independents than big pictures, and nobody ever brings that part up," she tells us while doing press for her upcoming film the (relatively) small-budget, "The Place Beyond the Pines." She has a point. Last year, Mendes starred in the dreamy psychedelic flick "Holy Motors." Prior to that, it was a role in Massy Tajedin's "Last Night." In "Pines," she plays Romina, a woman coming to grips with a child she had with a vigilante / motorcycle stunt driver Luke (played by real-life boyfriend Ryan Gosling). Here, Mendes is completely dressed down, playing a character who's both physically and emotionally distraught. Needless to say, it's a far cry from her roles in "Hitch" and "Ghost Rider." Mendes spoke with Moviefone about her new film, the movie she wishes got more attention,...

Ghost Ghirls is a new online comedy series presented by Yahoo!Screen that follows two young female ghostbusters as they solve mysteries of paranormal phenomena. Portrayed by comedians Amanda Lund and Maria Blasucci, the pair emulate Shawn and Gus of Psych more than Sherlock Holmes and Watson as they attempt to convince their clients and local law enforcement of their legitimacy as investigators.
Ghost Ghirls was created by Jeremy Konner, Lund and Blasucci, who also serve as executive producers -- seen above with fellow executive producer Jack Black. Konner, who is best known for his Drunk History series on Funny or Die, also directed Ghost Ghirls.
An exclusive sneak preview of two episodes of Ghost Ghirls was presented at SXSW 2013, featuring hilarious cameo appearances by Dave Grohl, Val Kilmer, Molly Shannon and numerous other celebrities. I thoroughly enjoyed the witty writing and well paced storylines, and look forward to more adventures with the paranormal pair.

Funny or Die is a noted purveyor of, well, funny things. But few of them are as funny as "Drunk History," 5-6 minute sketches where someone gets seriously drunk and then recounts an historical event. And while said drunken retellings are entertaining enough in their own right, I've always found that it's the re-enactment portion of the sketch that is far and away the funnies, whether it be the particular actors chosen for particular roles or the way those same...

Raise your glasses, online video fans! Another highly regarded web series is joining the wave of Internet offerings headed to the TV. Funny or Die's Drunk History has been ordered to series by Comedy Central, where it will air for a half-hour each week. If you're not familiar with Drunk History, you're in for a treat; the now-infrequent series features tanked scholars recounting their favorite historical events while big-name actors act out the resulting monologue, which tends toward incoherence and sloppiness. Series creator Derek Waters recently released a Christmas Drunk History special starring Ryan Gosling, Jim Carrey, and Eva Mendes. It was the first new episode in more than two and a half years, and was clearly a sign of things to come. Comedy Central has consistently been at the forefront of the web-to-tv movement. The cable channel previously snatched up several top creators from its now defunct Atom.com arm,...

Diane Haithman contributes to Deadline’s TCA coverage. Nick Kroll, star of Comedy Central’s new Kroll Show, said today at TCA the show will feature about “46%” characters he has created before, including “The Ed Hardy Boyz” and Fabrice Fabrice. “It was really whatever was making the room laugh the most,” said Kroll (The League), who appeared on the panel with collaborators Jon Daly, Jonathan Krisel and John Levenstein. “It will have a strong narrative thread, you will learn more about these characters with each episode.” Director and executive producer Krisel, who also directs Portlandia, called Kroll Show a completely different style of comedy. “Portlandia has its own aesthetic and sort of style, which to me is excellent, but there’s more of a parody going on” with Kroll, he said. “It has more of a movie trailer kind of feel.” Related: Comedy Central Picks Up ‘Drunk History’ To Series,...

On January 1st we can start a clean slate and draft our ever crucial new year’s resolutions. Whether or not we actually achieve those goals is another matter (we’ve yet to do 2012′s spring cleaning). Nevertheless, it’s always a fun challenge to set them for ourselves…and also for our friends in Hollywood. Just like us, our celebs could use a little goal setting for 2013. Just like your mother says, we do it because we love you. Here’s our resolutions to the stars, and -most importantly- Happy New Year!

Black, as well as Jake Johnson, Molly Shannon, Jason Schwartzman and other celebrities, are set to make cameo appearances in Ghost Ghirls, a comedic take on popular paranormal procedurals like Medium and Ghost Whisperer. The project, originally developed as a TV series for Syfy last year, chronicles the antics of two young female ghostbusters, played by Amanda Lund and Maria Blasucci (two-women improv show Beans!) — a pair of investigators attempting to solve the mysteries behind paranormal phenomena. At the same time, they attempt to convince their clients, other-worldly visitors and themselves that they are legit. Broadway Video's Above Average channel has been cycling through shows fairly quickly, with short series such as The Sidecar and The Realest Candidate already finishing their runs. The channel's newest debut is Sugarboy, a web series about a hyper child on a sugar rush who invents ludicrous and fast-paced action movie scenarios. Sugarboy is most reminiscent of Drunk History, Funny or Die's star-studded reenactment of historical events as told by hammered narrators. I'm not sure if the lead character in Sugarboy was actually fed a drum full of high-fructose corn syrup, but I certainly hope so. In the first episode, the frenzied child tells us the story of 'Chip Lockder: Crime Doctor', a muscled man's man who fights evil and touches a lot of boobies. Sugarboy's second episode will tell us the story of 'Kung-Fu Mom', which to me signifies a hearkening back to the ridiculously-titled exploitation movies of the 70s.

Screenwriters, actors and directors all do their best to try and capture the teenage experience, but it's a difficult one to replicate with any degree of authenticity. Teens can be both open and mercurial, stubborn and vulnerable and sometimes just a complete mystery, and their feelings and actions can only be understood if you've been through it yourself. For every John Hughes movie, the rare director to have captured that voice so perfectly, there are dozens more films that just don't quite get it. But for directors Jason Tippet and Elizabeth Mims, they wisely realized that teens themselves are the best subjects for the camera. They are the duo behidn the AFI Audience Award-winning "Only the Young." Produced by Derek Waters, the man behind "Drunk History," the documentary tracks the lives of a few kids in Southern Calinfornia as they go through the familiar ups and downs of love and life.

The first official photo of Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's new movie has made its way online (via EW), and the resemblance is as uncanny as we knew it would be. It looks like Day-Lewis has once again dove into a role, this time giving the world an Honest Abe that looks like the honest-to-God real thing.
Day-Lewis isn't the first actor to slip into the famous chin strap beard and toss on a jaunty stovetop hat. The IMDb character page for Abraham Lincoln lists 300 appearances by the sixteenth president in movies, starting all the way back in 1911. But who wore the beard the best?
We score the cinematic Lincolns from 1 to 10 after the jump!
Daniel Day-Lewis in "Lincoln"
Day-Lewis looks more weathered/leathery than we've ever seen before and more like the prez because of it.
Score: 9

The above scene at the Creative Capital retreat this weekend brought back a lot of memories. The arts funding organization’s semi-annual retreat was held at Williams College in Williamstown Massachusetts, and on the final evening the outdoor barbecue got drizzled out. So, it was moved indoors, and afterwards the cafeteria space became a party space, where artist grantees and consultants danced to Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love.” A level up, Cinemad’s Mike Plante set up his microphones and recorded a podcast. The ’80s music, the party, and radio — it was like one of my own evenings in college, where I’d wander from Wollman Auditorium upstairs to Wkcr to do my radio show at Columbia. And yeah, there may have been a whiskey bottle involved as well.

Why did the International Academy of the Digital Arts and Sciences choose Patton Oswalt to host this year’s 16th Annual Webby Awards? Oswalt has an inkling: “I look like the Internet personified,” he told an audience filled with celebrities, tech bigwigs, and humble entertainment journalists this afternoon. But Oswalt needn’t have been so self-deprecating. His jokes were uniformly well-received at Monday’s awards ceremony, especially when the comedian went off book. This, for example, is how Oswalt reacted after Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau accepted a statuette on behalf of Greenland.com: “I think winter just came!

Funny or Die may just be the perfect new media studio. If you happen to disagree, and if the news of its original web series Drunk History getting picked up for a pilot presentation by Comedy Central (along with all the other things the five-year-old entity founded by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s Gary Sanchez Productions has accomplished in the world of entertainment) doesn’t convince you otherwise, maybe this news will. That Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes, and Jim Carrey-starring Christmas-themed installment of Drunk History, which aired in December 2011 was the first time internet audiences were given an installment of the alcohol-infused Funny or Die web series since the last time. The last time an episode of the program, which depicts tall tales and/or historical events as recited by any number of inebriated comedians and re-enacted by any number of highly notable actors (like Michael Cera, Don Cheadle, Zooey Deschanel, and more) was released to the web by way of Funny or Die was way back in June 2010. That was when Duncan Trussell talked all blotto about the professional relationship between Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison. The next time fans of the series will see an installment of the Funny or Die online original could be any day, but instead of seeing it on Funny or Die, they may see it on television.

Created by Derek Waters and filmed, edited and directed by Jeremy Konner, "Drunk History" has one of the great viral video concepts -- someone gets spectacularly drunk, and then tries to go into detail about a famous historical event that's reenacted on screen, in costume, flubs and all, with celebrity guests like Michael Cera, Jack Black, Danny McBride, John C. Reilly and others. Abused historical topics have included Benjamin Franklin and the kite, William Henry Harrison and the friendship between Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass (played by Will Ferrell and Don Cheadle in what ended up winning the short filmmaking jury prize at Sundance in 2010), though my personal favorite, below, breaks from formula for a special holiday mauling of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas": But today Deadline reported that Comedy Central's ordered a pilot-presentation for "Drunk History Across America," a series...

Popular inebriated web series "Drunk History" might be making its way to television now that Comedy Central has ordered a pilot presentation to be produced by Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Chris Henchy’s Gary Sanchez Productions. Deadline broke the story earlier today.

The Gary Sanchez team will executive produce along with "Drunk History" creator Derek Waters, director Jeremy Konner and Funny Or Die producer/writer Owen Burke. According to a Comedy Central rep, the pilot will feature the same drunken historical reenactments by guest actors as the online series with the addition of "travel elements and interviews with the city’s locals" which will aslo be re-enacted by guest actors.
