All of this indicates 2025 could be a tough year for Hollywood writers, and Michael Schur isn’t blind to the signs. It took a while, but it’s finally happened: Amazon is shutting down Freevee, its free, fully ad-supported streaming service. As it turns out — and as we pointed out in January — there was just no point in having two ad-supported streaming platforms.

An Amazon spokesperson said the company has “decided to phase out Freevee branding.”

“There will be no change to the content available for Prime members, and a vast offering of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members, including select Originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a broad library of Fast Channels — all available on Prime Video,” the spokesperson continued.

Peak television was officially declared dead earlier this year when FX boss John Landgraf revealed that the number of scripted series on air in 2023 dropped 12% from the previous year – the first reduction in over a decade.

A collection of television studio bosses gathered in Austin to talk about the “strain” of producing so many shows – 600 in 2022.

Karey Burke, President, 20th Television, Nicole Clemens, President, Paramount Television Studios, Lisa Katz, President, Scripted Content, NBCUniversal Entertainment, Katherine Pope, President, Sony Pictures Television Studios and Erin Underhill, President, Universal Television, discussed the topic, as well as the contraction over the last twelve months in a panel at the Atx Festival in Texas.

“We’re on the other side of it,” said Burke. “I never want to celebrate the loss of opportunity but I think we all felt the strain of 600+ television shows in the marketplace and not being able to get the eyeballs.

But almost fifty years ago, even a successful show like Happy Days wasn't immune to using outlandish stunts to bolster ratings.

The ad-supported free streamer has opted to cancel the heartfelt series inspired by the memoir from Grammy-nominated twin sibling performers Tegan and Sara Quin after a single season.

The writing for the cancellation has been on the wall. Despite rave reviews, High School last aired in October 2022 with the formal decision to cancel the show coming nearly two years after the fact.

Sources say Amazon-owned Freevee wanted to renew High School for a second season, with executives in late 2022 expressing enough optimism for showrunner Clea DuVall to open a mini-room to craft a sophomore run. Ultimately, sources say the completion rate for High School left Freevee and Amazon execs little choice but to cancel the series despite the fact that scripts for an entire second season had already been completed.

More Better with Stephanie and Melissa will take listeners along on a personal ride through all aspects of life. They’ll share cheat codes for adulting, anecdotes and probably a few embarrassing stories.

Creator Shea Serrano announced the news Tuesday on social media, noting that the series will not be returning for a second season at the ad-supported, Amazon-backed streamer Freevee. Sources say producers Universal Television will shop Primo in a bid to find the beloved comedy a new home.

“A short but beautiful run — sadly we’re not gonna be making any more episodes of Primo — i will always be indebted to everyone who worked on the show to make it so great and i will always be thankful to everyone who watched and championed it — thank you for real — long live Primo,” he wrote alongside a video of the rave reviews for the series from exec producer Mike Schur (Hacks, The Good Place) that doubled as a “For Your Consideration” promo.

Freevee has canceled its freshman comedy series Primo from Shea Serrano and Mike Schur.

The decision to pass on a second season came after lengthy deliberations. While the show’s fate was being decided, the options on the cast were extended twice with the second extension ending this month. As explained by a source close to production, the executives looked for ways to confirm a second season but were unable to do so.

Primo employed a large number of Latinos both in front of cameras and behind, a rarity that will continue to diminish as networks and streamers cut down and eliminate productions due to budgetary reasons amid an industry contraction. Another such series, ABC’s Not Dead Yet, was among the broadcast shows canceled at the end of this season. While neither of the shows was deliberately targeted, their cancellations are a setback for representation.

Dinner with the Parents is the next original comedy series from Freevee, and Screen Rant has a clip from the show’s premiere episode. The 10-episode series has a unique concept, as it centers around a weekly family get-together that, like many such events, dependably devolves into chaos.

Amazon is pushing back against recent industry chatter and a new press report indicating that it is planning to shut down Freevee.

“There are no changes to Freevee,” a company spokesperson said in a statement provided to Deadline. “Amazon Freevee remains an important streaming offering providing both Prime and non-Prime customers thousands of hit movies, shows, and originals, all for free.”

The ad-supported streaming outlet traces its roots back to January 2019, when it launched as Freedive, a service from subsidiary IMDb. Five years later, with Prime Video having recently introduced advertising on its scripted series and movies, the thinking has been that maintaining Freevee could involve redundancy, both internally and for ad buyers.

Amazon is cutting hundreds of jobs in its Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios division.

Mike Hopkins, the executive who leads the division, announced the reduction in an email Wednesday morning, writing that “several hundred roles” would be eliminated.

“Our industry continues to evolve quickly and it’s important that we prioritize our investments for the long-term success of our business, while relentlessly focusing on what we know matters most to our customers,” he wrote. “Throughout the past year, we’ve looked at nearly every aspect of our business with an eye towards improving our ability to deliver even more breakthrough movies, TV shows, and live sports in a personalized, easy to use entertainment experience for our global customers. As a result, we’ve identified opportunities to reduce or discontinue investments in certain areas while increasing our investment and focus on content and product initiatives that deliver the most impact.

Bill Kenwright, the prolific West End producer behind the hit musicals Blood Brothers, Whistle Down the Wind and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat who would later go on to become an owner and chairman of his boyhood soccer club Everton, has died. He was 78.

On Entourage, the central tension always involved the question of whether Vince was gonna do the movie. Only there was never really any tension, because of course Vince was gonna do the movie — or, if he didn’t, things would in some other way work out just fine for him, E, Turtle, and even Johnny Drama. Yet for a show with no real stakes and only a modest level of humor (especially if you weren’t amused by Ari screaming actionable insults at Lloyd), it ran for eight seasons. And a movie!

If 2022 was the year of the deadpan Latina, then 2023 is shaping up to be the year of el vago: a genial but aimless dude; sometimes well meaning, occasionally just a lost cause. Not exactly a sinvergüenza, but hardly someone with a five-year plan.

Shea Serrano and Greg Daniels’ Primo offers a few takes on the type — Rafa’s (Ignacio Diaz-Silverio) uncle Rollie (Johnny Rey Diaz) and his tío Mondo (Efraín Villa) are both amiable slackers, but their lack of ambition comes from different places. The Zen-like Mondo mostly thinks attachment and desire lead to suffering, while Rollie usually isn’t thinking past the weekend. Rafa quickly learns to take their advice with a whole salt shaker, but their unreliability makes the moments when they do come through gratifying and hilarious.

Sophomore seasons are notoriously difficult to navigate.

And yet a Hulu comedy serving as dramedy with a stellar cast and strong writing continues to be a critically-acclaimed delight, certified fresh at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, returned arguably better than ever.

It's a series with a healthy dose of family dysfunction, two cousins who are genuinely trying to manage things like their mental health in an authentic way that feels true to form for men, and a working-class element that feels authentic, as the characters grapple with the day to day and their respective life choices.

But no, this time, we're not talking about The Bear. And make no mistake The Bear Season 2 was certainly worth talking about, and we've still been discussing it.

We're actually talking about the critically-acclaimed, clever, and irreverent but criminally underpromoted and underrated This Fool.

Essentially, This Fool is one of the best comedic series not being discussed.

On the list of unlikely cultural developments in 2023, Amazon Freevee producing two of the year’s best comedies would have ranked pretty high, and yet here we are. After delivering the unexpected delights of Jury Duty, the streamer is now debuting Primo, a family comedy that's sweet without being saccharine, smart without grinding its gears to make a point, and, best of all, incredibly funny.

Primo comes from executive producer Mike Schur, who built his brand on warm-hearted series like Parks and Recreation and The Good Place, and creator Shea Serrano, an author and journalist who's covered sports and entertainment at Grantland and The Ringer. The premise, drawn from Serrano's own life growing up in San Antonio, centers on Mexican-American teenager Rafa (Ignacio Diaz-Silverio) coming of age with a single mom (Christina Vidal) and her five brothers, each of whom take an active and frequently unhinged interest in helping raise him.

The Fantastic Pavilion, a new hub for the genre community set to make its debut at this year’s Cannes’ Marché du Film, has revealed its seven Gala screenings.

Over May 16-21, industry professionals will get to “appreciate the diversity of genre offerings coming from all over the world,” tease the organizers. They will also be able to create new alliances and acquire titles from companies like Raven Banner, MPI Media, Screenbound and Mantícora.

“The reason for the Pavilion is that we needed space to do better business and help newcomers integrate more easily, and faster, into this constantly growing industry,” says Fantastic Pavilion executive director Pablo Guisa Koestinger. “Genre needs to take the place it deserves and it’s Fantastic Pavilion’s mission to help to achieve this.”

The ninth annual SeriesFest, an annual television-centric event held in Denver, kicks off Friday with a slightly abbreviated schedule in light of the writers strike. Per WGA rules, writers are not allowed to make “promotional appearances” at film festivals or at “For Your Consideration” Emmy events. Already, a number of FYC showcases have either been canceled, or continued on but with just a screening, no panel, due to the strike.

SeriesFest becomes the first festival to be impacted by the strike. This year’s event takes place from May 5 to May 10, which now happens to coincide with the early days of the strike. Based on the best-seller by Shea Serrano, the show is about a 16-year-old boy raised by his clever mother and his five overbearing uncles on the south side of San Antonio. “Primo” stars Christina Vidal, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, Johnny Rey Diaz, Henri Esteve, Johnathan Medina, Efráin Villa, and Carlos Santos.

Reacher and The Wheel of Time will be available to stream for free soon. In 2019, Amazon launched a free streaming service called IMDb Freedive, which was renamed IMDb TV a few months later. In 2022, the service was rebranded to Amazon Freevee, where viewers could stream free content, including Prime Video originals and other films and television series, supported by ads. The streaming service is available in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

Via Collider, it has been revealed that Amazon plans to release Prime Video originals each month on Freevee moving forward. More than 100 Prime Video originals will be available to stream soon. The first seasons of Reacher and The Wheel of Time will be available for free on the streaming service later this year. This month, the first three episodes of The Summer I Turned Pretty, A League of Their Own, The Terminal List, and Paper Girls will be available for free.

Amazon Freevee has greenlit “The Goat,” the streamer announced on Monday.

Hailing from the producers of “The Bachelor,” “The Office,” and “FBoy Island,” the reality competition series will feature 14 reality TV celebrities competing in a series of mental, physical, and social challenges for the sake of winning the “greatest of all time” title. Amazon Freevee announced on Monday that throughout the year, more than 100 original series and movies from Prime Video will be available to stream for free on the ad-supported streaming service.

Starting Friday, May 26, Freevee users can stream the first three episodes of The Summer I Turned Pretty. Also launching in May are the first three episodes of A League of Their Own, The Terminal List, Paper Girls, Goliath, The Tick, full seasons of Homecoming and Upload and The Vast of Night.

With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.

The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”

The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”
