Gregg Sulkin described Pretty Smart as the greatest role he's ever had and the "proudest moment of my career." He said, "It is honestly the most fun I have ever had on a project and I have been in this industry since I was 12. This is basically my dream job and I am so happy to be doing it."
The series had a quick turnaround time. It was greenlit on 5 March 2021. It filmed from early April to early July that same year and then premiered on Netflix on 18 October 2021. The 10-episode first season premiered seven months after being greenlit.
When asked to reveal how he was similar to his character Gregg Sulkin said that, "I am the same in the sense that I have always been very athletic" and that "Grant definitely likes to eat well and train well." Like his character, Sulkin has always been well known for his fitness lifestyle and his great body.
Gregg Sulkin said that if there were a Season 2, he would be no problem taking off his shirt and showing off his body as frequently as he did in Season 1, though he had a small condition. He said, "We've got to make sure that there's healthy food on on set those days because it's tough taking your shirt off a lot. You got to stay disciplined."
