As 2024 draws to a close, it's time to reflect on some of the cinematic masterpieces released throughout the year. With several streaming services at our fingertips, it's much easier to access the best films that were released this year, as well as some older hits. While this convenience seems like a blessing, it can sometimes also feel overwhelming, leaving us unsure of what to watch next. Growing up, I loved the children’s novel “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.” So when the Hollywood film version came along, you’d better believe I was primed. Like the book, the movie was about a family with a father who builds a magical flying car. But any similarity ended there. The book’s tone was cool and dry and deadpan irreverent — the author, after all, was Ian Fleming of James Bond fame — but the movie was a wacked piece of ersatz-Disney musical kitsch. Fleming’s debonair absurdist saga of gangsters and hair’s-breadth escapes was replaced by a broad fairy tale featuring a kidnapper called the Child Catcher. Watching the movie, I kept wondering when the real story — the one I’d loved — would start; somehow, it never did. What happened to it? By the time the movie was over, I had suffered the 9-year-old’s once-upon-a-time equivalent of Ptsd.

Netflix has shared the trailer and poster for Mother of the Bride, which will begin streaming globally on May 9, 2024.

The film was directed by Mark Waters, who is known for Freaky Friday, Mean Girls, Just Like Heaven, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Vampire Academy, and Bad Santa 2.

In Mother of the Bride, Lana’s daughter Emma returns from abroad and drops a bombshell: She’s getting married—in Thailand—in a month! Things only get worse when Lana learns that the man who captured Emma’s heart is the son of the man who broke her heart years ago.

The film stars Brooke Shields, Miranda Cosgrove (iCarly), Sean Teale, and Chad Michael Murray, with Rachael Harris and Benjamin Bratt.

Written by Robin Bernheim Burger, the Netflix movie also stars Michael McDonald, Wilson Cruz, Tasneem Roc, and Dalip Sondhi.

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.

Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).

The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

One of the most anticipated television releases of April is coming to Hulu on April 7. “Tiny Beautiful Things” stars Kathryn Hahn as troubled writer Clare. Ironically, she becomes a great advice columnist as her life falls apart. Her marriage is in trouble and her teen daughter hates her. Plus, her writing career is going nowhere. Based on the best-selling collection by Cheryl Strayed, the limited series explores the author’s journey toward healing herself and others.

Also arriving on Hulu in April is the series adaptation of the best-selling novel “Saint X.” The series is based on Alexis Schaitkin’s novel of the same name and follows a woman’s dangerous pursuit of her older sister’s disappearance on an idyllic Caribbean vacation. Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.

But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

April is here and that means there’s a whole slew of new releases headed to Hulu to meet your streaming needs.

In the realm of original films, Hulu has the queer rom-com “Crush,” starring Rowan Blanchard and Auli’i Cravalho, which debuts April 29. Meanwhile, new library arrivals this month include the Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt sci-fi mind-bender “Looper,” both “Shrek” and “Shrek 2,” and all four films in “The Twilight Saga.”

April is also a big month for new TV shows on Hulu. Andrew Garfield’s hot streak continues with the FX drama “Under the Banner of Heaven,” which debuts exclusively on Hulu April 28. For reality TV fans, “The Kardashians” premieres on April 14. Hulu also has two franchise spinoff kids shows returning with Season 7 of “Madagascar: A Little Wild” on April 4 and Season 2 of “The Croods: Family Tree” on April 5.

Though the confusingly named initiative “FX on Hulu” is on its way out, FX is still bringing premium television to Hulu in the meantime.

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by FX limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. This adaptation of the non-fiction book by John Krakauer stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon police detective whose faith is shaken when investigating a murder involving the church.

It’s not all just FX on the TV side of things for Hulu this month, however. The streamer is debuting second seasons of its series The Hardy Boys (April 6) and Woke (April 8). There isn’t much to report from Hulu’s original movies arm aside from true crime documentary Captive Audience on April 21. But that doc about one family’s 50-year journey for justice sounds like a must-watch.

Yes, forget all the arguments about Die Hard being a Christmas movie because the Star Wars franchise has been shockingly consistent with its holiday release schedule. With its list of new releases for December 2021, Disney+ has the latest Star Wars project to drop on or around Christmas.

The Book of Boba Fett is set to premiere on Dec. 29. This spinoff of The Mandalorian will feature Temuera Morrison reprising his role as the galaxy’s most enigmatic bounty hunter, Boba Fett. Following the events of The Mandalorian season 2, Boba and his partner Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) now have a major stake in the galaxy’s criminal underworld, and will do whatever it takes to keep it.

The holiday season is almost here and Amazon Prime is getting in the mood with its list of December 2021 releases. Sure there are the usual Christmas movies to be found but the real gift this month are two big original titles.

The sixth and final season of beloved sci-fi series The Expanse premieres on Dec. 10. Amazon is doing its usual release strategy of three episodes on the premiere day followed by a weekly schedule so there’s still some time to be spent with the crew of the Rocinante. The other big ticket item is the Desi and Lucy biopic Being the Ricardos on Dec. 21. Sure, Aaron Sorkin seems to be completely disinterested in I Love Lucy and Nicole Kidman bears no passing resemblance to the iconic comedienne whatsoever but uh…it’s a movie!

In the latest sign of Donald Trump’s plunging stock as a business brand, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city is moving ahead with plans to cancel its business contracts with the Trump Organization including the company’s famous Wollman Skating Rink in Central Park.

“New York City doesn’t do business with insurrectionists,” de Blasio tweeted. “We’re taking steps to Terminate agreements with the Trump Organization to operate the Central Park Carousel, Wollman and Lasker skating rinks, and the Ferry Point Golf Course” in the Bronx.

Disney+ is increasingly becoming a place for rediscovering movies and finding new ones. On that note, one of the more underrated entries in Jim Carrey’s back catalogue, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, is now available on the streaming service.

The film features divorced real estate entrepreneur Tom Popper attempting to attain a promotion by securing the sale of a Central Park restaurant, the area’s sole privately-owned building, only to have his life invaded by a band of penguins left to him by his late father, an explorer who was rarely present during his childhood. Initially attempting to get rid of the unwanted interlopers, he’s forced to keep them when his young son mistakes them for a birthday present, swiftly making up for his frequently forgetting the day in the past. While it’s just over a year or so old, Disney Plus has picked up a significant number of subscribers as it heads into 2021. Although the big release this month will be WandaVision, the Mouse House are continuing to flesh out the library of content and added eight new movies and television shows on January 1st.

After being removed from Disney+ only a few months ago, The Wolverine is back, presumably as the result of a new licensing deal being agreed upon. The James Mangold-directed picture is one of the stronger entries in the Fox X-Men franchise, and sees Hugh Jackman’s character travel to Japan in an adaptation of a popular 1980s comic story. Although it’ll still be some time before we can watch Logan and company all in one place, we’d expect more Marvel-related films to start appearing on the service in the first half of the year.

Disney Plus has gotten the New Year off to a solid start with a content drop that includes movies like Hugh Jackman’s X-Men spinoff The Wolverine and two underrated Jim Carrey efforts in the form of Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hearts A Who! and Mr. Popper’s Penguins. There’s a lot of other stuff on the way as well, of course, meaning subscribers will be sure to find things to keep themselves entertained. Another year, and another daunting challenge to keep up with the number of streaming options available from the big online players. So long, 2020, 2021 is here! Now that we’ve entered the New Year, the various major streaming services are starting January with a bang as they all have hefty hauls arriving this weekend. The first day of the month always sees a load of newly licensed titles go up across the platforms and that’s especially the case in January, as Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Hulu and Prime Video have tons of great new movies and TV shows debuting this weekend.

For starters, there’s something for all tastes becoming available on Netflix on January 1st. We’ve got Steven Spielberg’s Catch Me If You Can, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, animated comedy Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, both Sex in the City movies, Superbad, Bruce Lee classic Enter the Dragon, horror flick Gothika and not one but two films directed by Martin Scorsese, Goodfellas and The Departed, featuring DiCaprio again.

New Year’s Day falling on a Friday this year means that Disney Plus is kicking off 2021 in style by dropping a bunch of great new titles. Numbering eight in total, it’s not the biggest haul ever, but there are still some notable movies and TV series becoming available that make for perfect January 1st viewing for the whole family.

The haul includes not one, not two but three National Geographic documentary films about sharks – 700 Sharks, Mega Hammerhead and Great Shark Chow Down. So, if your preferred way to ring in the new year is to celebrate with the predators of the sea, then you’re in luck.

2020, cursed year that it was, represented the first turn of the calendar since 2009 that did not feature an entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With its list of new releases for January 2021, Disney+ is set to immediately rectify that. Not only is WandaVision the first new McU installment since 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, it’s the first ever Marvel television show from Marvel Studios’ reordering under content czar Kevin Feige.

WandaVision is set to premiere on Jan. 15 and will feature two beloved McU characters Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and The Vision (Paul Bettany). As the trailers reveal, this series will find Wanda and Vis living in domestic bliss in before discovering all is not what it seems. The series will pay homage to classic TV sitcoms and premiere new episodes each Friday.

Disney Plus is adding a bunch of new titles this January 1st, including two great Jim Carrey family movies that the Mouse House has inherited from 20th Century Fox. Going up on the site on New Year’s Day are a couple of well-received entries in Carrey’s filmography from roughly a decade ago that have nonetheless kind of been forgotten about. Horton Hears a Who! is an animated adaptation of the classic Dr. Seuss children’s book and stars the actor as Horton, an eccentric elephant living in the jungle who discovers that Whoville exists on a tiny dust speck. If you’re looking to expand your home video library and catch up on some movies during these trying times, Disney just gave your bank account a little breathing room. The Mouse House is offering a number of promotions as part of an on-going flash sale which begins this week. Many of their movies will be available for digital purchase for $4.99. In addition, the films are broken up into categories and each one will have its own sales period.

The first category, called “Feel Good Movies,” started on April 14th and features a mixture of musical and romantic comedies including Bohemian Rhapsody and Pretty Woman. This selection of films, which you can see in full below, is available until April 20th, when the next group begins.

If you like superheroes and animals equally, you're in luck. Warner Bros. is currently developing an animated Super Pets movie, with writer Jared Stern penning the script. Throughout its history, DC Comics has given their various heroes animal counterparts that have often been accomplices on various adventures with the non-animal do-gooders. However, there were times when the pets united to form a group known as the Super Pets and Warner Bros. is hoping to spin that idea into some gold with a new animated feature.

Jared Stern already has a proven track record within the DC universe, having penned the screenplay for last year's The Lego Batman Movie, which is arguably the best DC movie that Warner Bros. has made in the last five years. Stern also penned The Lego Ninjago Movie, the upcoming animated movie Smallfoot, as well as live-action comedies like The Internship, The Watch and Mr. Popper's Penguins.

Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer and three photos for Daddy's Home 2, the studio's comedy sequel that continues the story from the 2015 smash hit Daddy's Home. Production has begun on Disney's Magic Camp, a live-action comedy starring Adam Devine (Workaholics, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, Pitch Perfect), Gillian Jacobs (Community, Girls) and Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development, Transparent, The Larry Sanders Show) directed by Mark Waters (Bad Santa 2, Mean Girls). The film is shooting on locations in and around Los Angeles and is scheduled for release in 2017.

Tambor plays Roy Preston, the owner of a summer camp for aspiring young magicians and Devine is Andy, a former camper whose flailing career as a magician has forced him to return to the camp as a counselor. Also returning to the camp is Andy's former partner and current nemesis, Darkwood, played by Jacobs, who is now a successful magician. When preparations begin for the end-of-summer magic contest between rival teams of campers, Andy and his team of ragtag misfits must go head...

Will Ferrell's already played a grown-up step-brother opposite John C. Reilly, but in Sean Ander's upcoming comedy Daddy's Home, he'll get to play a loving and devoted step-father instead. Complicating his attempts to fit into his new family is the estranged real father, played by Mark Wahlberg. Though they learned to get along in The Other Guys, Ferrell and Wahlberg's characters are quickly at odds, as seen in this first trailer for the film. Horrible Bosses 2 is one of those rare instances where the comedy sequel is better than the original. Then again, I wasn't exactly a fan of 2011's Horrible Bosses (my review here). Walking into the sequel I also couldn't tell you much about the first one. I remember the cast included returning stars Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis as Nick, Dale and Kurt and their "horrible" bosses were Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell, all of which but Farrell have returned for the sequel. I wouldn't have been able to tell you whose boss each of them had been, though, but does that even matterc It's a comedy, it's meant to make us laugh and keep us entertained for 90-120 minutes and Horrible Bosses 2 does that, and what makes it better than several comedies I've seen as of late is the fact I'd have no problem...

Mean Girls director Mark Waters has signed on to direct #Catfight for Screen Gems and Olive Bridge Entertainment.

The story, which was written by Amelie Gillette (Growing Up Fisher), centers on Lucy, an insecure high school girl who receives a scholarship to attend a prestigious private school for her senior year, as she tries to hide her past. On the day she is being interviewed by a recruiter from her dream college, Lucy learns that her boyfriend's psychotic ex-girlfriend has just gotten out of a juvenile detention facility, and challenges her to a fight after school. Lucy tries to balance taking care of her college prep and preparing for this showdown.

Will Gluck, who brought the project to Screen Gems, will produce alongside Alessandro Tanaka and Brian Gatewood. No production schedule was given.

Mark Waters is best known for directing Mean Girls starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Tina Fey.

But it's tough not to think about Jim Carrey's best-known roles as we consider the actor's third SNL outing—and, to be honest, to consider how long it's been since he last made a great comedy. 2013's Kick-Ass 2 was a dismal flop. That same year, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone tanked as well. The most charitable thing you can call 2011's Mr. Popper's Penguins is "inoffensive.

If you're interested in an anniversary conversation that really has some bearing on today's film industry, I highly recommend American Cinematographer's recent chat with "Collateral" Dp Dion Beebe. It's been nearly a decade (if you can believe it) since Beebe and Paul Cameron carved out a serious place for digital with that film, earning an American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) nomination in the process. It got me thinking about the history of the industry's acceptance of digital as reflected in the nominations handed out by both the Asc and Academy's cinematography branch over the last 10 years. Chris McKay will direct the sequel to The Lego Movie, the 3D animated blockbuster which has raked in $US362 million at cinemas worldwide.

McKay was animation co-director on the first film, which was co-produced by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, with animation by Animal Logic.

Chris Miller and Phil Lord, who co-scripted and directed The Lego Movie, will produce the sequel. A treatment is being written by Michelle Morgan and Jared Stern (Wreck-it Ralph, Mr. Popper's Penguins), according to Deadline.com.

Warner Bros. is also considering a spin-off that will broaden the Lego franchise by building on the world of Ninjago, modern cities and ancient villages populated by dragons.

McKay directed 39 episodes of Cartoon Network.s Robot Chicken and the telemovie Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode III.

Warner Bros' animated "The Lego Movie" took first place at the domestic box office this weekend by grossing $69 million, scoring the second biggest opening of all time for the mont of February. Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" still holds the records with a debut of $83.8 million back in 2004. "The Lego Movie" took in another $18.1 million from overseas for a worldwide debut of $87 million. Since the movie cost only $60 million to make, it's already an instant hit and the results justify the studio's decision to begin work on a sequel several weeks ago. In just four days, audiences will see the unique building blocks of The Lego Movie come together thanks to the minds of directors Phil Lord & Chris Miller. So far the buzz has been great with a variety of critics calling the film original, funny and offering proof that not every film based on established intellectual property has to be without creativity. With The Lego Movie hitting theaters in just four short days, Warner Bros. is already moving forward with a sequel, hiring Jared Stern to work on the screenplay with another unidentified writer.

The Lego Movie is tracking very well, with some box office analysts predicting it may gross more than $40 million in its opening weekend, and that it will easily beat other new releases such as The Monuments Men and Vampire Academy. No voice cast members from The Lego Movie have been confirmed to return, and it isn't known if directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will be back to direct.

After the early buzz for WB's The Lego Movie, it's been revealed that a sequel is already in the works. This comes in response to tracking news that the film is set to open with $40 million dollars this weekend and jump straight to the No. 1 spot. The Internship and Mr. Popper's Penguins' Jared Stern will replace Phill Lord and Christopher Miller on writing duties. Returning cast members are still unknown. What do you think of the news? Things have gotten even more awesome for "The Lego Movie": It's getting a sequel.

Despite the film not even opening in theaters yet, studio Warner Bros. is so excited about "Lego"'s prospects that it's already greenlit a follow-up. Industry analysts are predicting "Lego" to take in about $40 million when it opens this weekend.

The sequel will be written by Jared Stern, the screenwriter behind "The Internship" and "Mr. Popper's Penguins," along with another unnamed writer. "The Lego Movie" writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will be involved in the creative process for the sequel, consulting on the movie along with other filmmakers behind upcoming Warner Bros. animation releases.

No information about a plot or potential release date was available. Warner Bros. has yet to officially announce the sequel, according to TheWrap.

The Lego Movie doesn't even open until Friday, but test screenings and critical reaction is very positive so far with projections having the animated film opening number one this weekend. So, you know what that means: a sequel is coming!
