There are a few documentarians who dabble in feature filmmaking: R.J. Cutler (“If I Stay”), Matt Heineman (“A Private War”), even Werner Herzog (there are many). To their ranks we can now add Oscar-winner Roger Ross Williams (“Music By Prudence”), and he’s all in on making it work.
At Telluride, Williams screened his well-reviewed Sundance feature “Cassandro”; saw the world premiere of “Stamped from the Beginning” at the Toronto International Film Festival; and Apple TV+ will air his four-part docuseries “The Super Models” September 20.
It’s an eclectic and vibrant collection of work and none of it was straightforward or easy. “Cassandro” is based on the true story of Luchador Saúl Armendáriz (Gael García Bernal in a career-best performance) who finds his true identity as the cross-dressing El Exotico on the Mexico wrestling circuit. Williams met his subject on the Amazon documentary short “The Man Without a Mask” (2016).

The cast of the 2023 Netflix animated movie Nimona is full of talented and famous names, including the actress who plays the titular character. The film is based on the 2015 graphic novel of the same name by Nd Stevenson and reimagines the Middle Ages. A futuristic medieval setting serves as the backdrop of the animated feature, which revolves around a rambunctious shapeshifter named Nimona who becomes the sidekick of a fugitive named Ballister Boldheart as they try to clear his name in the kingdom.
Following multiple production delays, Nimona premiered on June 30, 2023, and was met with widespread acclaim. Many critics and fans praised the adaption for its unique animation style, cast performances, dynamic storytelling, and more. But since Nimona is an animated movie, it's always interesting to see the faces behind the characters' voices, and the Netflix film contains a lot of recognizable faces.

Joining Moretz and Ahmed in the film are Frances Conroy, Lorraine Toussaint, Beck Bennett, RuPaul Charles, Indya Moore, Julio Torres, Sarah Sherman and Eugene Lee Yang.
In 2015, the internet comic was published by HarperCollins, becoming a New York Times bestselling graphic novel. Twentieth Century Fox Animation initially acquired the rights to the film, based on cartoonist Nd Stevenson’s webcomics, and planned to release the film in 2020 with “Big Hero 6” animator Patrick Osborne to direct. But when Disney acquired Fox in 2019, the company shuttered animation house Blue Sky Studios and canceled the project. In April 2022, Netflix announced it had acquired the film,...

February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.
This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.
The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

Chloë Grace Moretz reveals how she tricked director Martin Scorsese into casting her in Hugo. Beginning her career as a child actor, Moretz is perhaps best known for her breakthrough role as Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass and its sequel, Kick-Ass 2. She currently stars in the new Amazon Prime Video series The Peripheral which, from Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, could be the next big cerebral sci-fi series.
In 2011, Moretz starred in the Hugo, an action-adventure film directed by Scorsese. Based on the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret and adapted by the Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Logan, the film tells the story of the titular 12-year-old orphan played by Asa Butterfield who lives in the Gare Montparnasse railway station in Paris during the 1930s and gets wrapped up in a mystery involving the real-life pioneer filmmaker Georges Méliès, played by Ben Kingsley. In a new interview with Hunger magazine, Chloë Grace Moretz opened up about some of the more challenging aspects of growing up famous.
The 25-year-old rose to prominence as a child after starring in "Kick-Ass" in 2010 and continued to make waves as a teen with movies like "Carrie" and "If I Stay." The first time she realized how famous she was, it hit her "like a ton of bricks." "I was 18 and doing a red carpet," she said. "I walked off of it and I felt so much self-loathing and was really confused about the experience that just went down. I was really unwell after that. There was this complete jarring shift in my consciousness, I questioned who I was. What am I doing? Who am I? Why am I doing this? Like, what does this mean?"
She also recalled her first intense experience with paparazzi, which occurred a few years earlier.

Series will chronicle the rise of Juul from a scrappy tech start-up to a multibillion-dollar tobacco company that at one point controlled 72% of the market. This will be no puff piece: Juul’s rise, and the high nicotine concentration and flavored products, helped spark what top health authorities labeled an epidemic of youth addiction.

The crushing inequality in global economics is both the righteous roil of British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom’s inequality satire “Greed” and its Achilles heel in effectively dramatizing the wreckage wrought by billionaires.
It’s always tricky to find humor in ostentatious wealth while stoking our concern for the plight of sweatshop workers and refugees, and Winterbottom, teaming again with his go-to comic frontman Steve Coogan, is not one to finesse such tonal details when he’s got a message to get out about mega-loaded wankers, and a killer clown whom he’s confident will wring laughs out of audacious self-centeredness.
But in the case of “Greed,” at least, the jokey jerkiness mostly works as we enter the orbit of crassly aggressive fast-fashion magnate Richard McCreadie (a fake-tanned Coogan sporting blinding white teeth) while he readies a 60th birthday toga bash in Mykonos to save his reputation after a parliamentary inquiry...

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has stepped up for Deadtown, an Entertainment One and Grey Matter Entertainment script that will be developed for a pilot by Shauna Cross. Deadtown is an adaptation of the Catherynne M. Valente novella The Refrigerator Monologues and the hourlong premise is a blueprint to create an original superhero universe set in the modern era with an underlying theme of female empowerment.
Five recently-dead women meet in Deadtown, a purgatory where they discover that their entire lives were merely in service to the superhero men they happened to cross paths with, resulting in each of their deaths. Or in comic book terms, they were “refrigerated”–frozen out of the story once they provided emotional backstory for the men. Until now. They start to discover their own powers, tell their sides of the narrative, and decide to write their own damn stories. And a group of seemingly ordinary women discover their own true power.

After tackling film and TV, Blumhouse has its sights set on a new medium. And while this new venture is based on a true story, it won’t be quite the kind of horror some fans might be used to. According to a new report from Big Brother Network, Mark who is the house’s main target for eviction this week tried to talk with current Hoh Christmas and her main sidekick Josh in the Hoh room yesterday, August 20th at around 6:05 pm pacific time. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to get them to change their focus on getting him out, but he did get them to change their totem pole. Before he went to talk with them, the totem pole was to go after Jason next. Then somehow blindside Matt. After that, go after Kevin. After Mark talked to them, they decided that Alex should be their next target before Jason. Shockingly, Christmas and Josh made this decision without their king Paul. But I’m sure they’ll eventually run it by him so he can talk them out of it should he see fit. Anyways, during the conversation,...

Adapted from Nicola Yoon’s Ya novel, it stars Amandla Stenberg (Rue in The Hunger Games) as Maddy, a housebound 17-year-old with an immunodeficiency disease that makes her allergic to everything in the outside world – especially Olly (Nick Robinson), the hot skater kid who has just moved in next door. Unable to hook up Irl, the pair start instant messaging, beginning a blandly grown-up sext-free relationship. Both appear totally devoid of teenage hormones and Maddy is freakily well-adjusted for a teenager who has never set foot out of home. This is anaemic stuff, though...

Chicago – I’ll be the first to admit that I am not the target audience for these stock young adult romance novels. Aside from the odd fascination and romanticization of teenage death and terminal illness, these stories feel trite and much closer to fantasy than anything real or plausible. This is what the film “Everything, Everything” brings to the table, which essentially translates to Nothing, Nothing.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
I am patient and empathetic. I always try to understand another person’s point of view or outlook especially when it doesn’t mirror my own. Going into every film with an open mind is the only way to truly open yourself to the experience it is trying to impart. I didn’t know anything when going into “Everything, Everything” but it soon became clear that I actually knew exactly how the story was going to progress after the first ten minutes. This...

This weekend, it’s all about 20th Century Fox. The studio is in the unusual position of opening two sequels, Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Covenant” and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul.” With the second weekend of “Snatched” and the long-running “The Baby Boss,” that should give them four titles in the top 10.

Joining the two new titles is “Everything, Everything” (Warner Bros.), an adaptation of the young-adult novel about the first love of a chronically ill teenage girl. Those three, along with the continued strength of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” could propel top 10 grosses into a second straight week of improvement over last year. A robust Mother’s Day actually pushed last weekend slightly ahead of 2016’s.

See Unforgettable in theaters April 21, 2017.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ dramatic thriller Unforgettable is the first film in the director’s chair for veteran producer Denise Di Novi (“Crazy, Stupid, Love,” “Focus”).
Katherine Heigl (“27 Dresses,” “Knocked Up”), Rosario Dawson (the “Sin City” films) and Geoff Stults (TV’s “The Odd Couple”), star in the film. “Unforgettable” marks a reunion for Heigl and Di Novi, who previously collaborated on “Life as We Know It.”
Heigl stars as Tessa Connover, who is barely coping with the end of her marriage when her ex-husband, David (Stults), becomes happily engaged to Julia Banks (Dawson)—not only bringing Julia into the home they once shared but also into the life of their daughter, Lilly (Isabella Rice). Essentially reimagining “Starman” as a tepid Ya weepie, “The Space Between Us” adds the one thing that’s been missing from melodramatic teen dramas like “The Fault in Our Stars” and “If I Stay”: Mars. Of course! The Red Planet. What took them so long? It’s such a perfectly natural setting for a genre that has wasted millions upon millions of dollars searching for signs of life. Alas, there are none to be found in this otherwise guileless and good-natured sci-fi love story.
Inexplicably not based on a book — but rather on an original idea by “Collateral Beauty” screenwriter Allan Loeb — “The Space Between Us” begins in the near future, as visionary scientist Nathaniel Shepherd (Gary Oldman, so characteristically hard to recognize that he’s easy to recognize) bids farewell to the first colonists of Mars, a team of astronauts who will establish and live in a dusty little outpost called “East Texas.
