Just in time for Halloween, Tim Burton fans will be treated to a glimpse inside the filmmaker’s creative mind, through the perspectives of those who know him best.

Following its Tribeca Film Festival premiere in June 2024, Wood Entertainment has released the trailer for Tim Burton: Life in the Line, a four-part docuseries that it will self-distribute October 23 on a custom direct-to-consumer streaming platform.

Directed by Tara Wood, Life in the Line features never-before-seen footage, interviews and artwork, spanning his early career at Disney to the makings of his films Batman (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990) and The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), as well as Netflix’s The Addams Family spinoff series Wednesday (2022-present).

Tyler Perry’s drama Beauty in Black captured the top overall spot on Nielsen’s streaming charts for the week of Sept. 15-21 with 1.35 billion minutes of viewing time. The show came in just slightly ahead of the prior weeks 1.34 billion minutes and dethroned Wednesday as the overall leader.

Right behind Beauty in Black was Black Rabbit, starring Jason Bateman and Jude Law, with 1.23 billion viewing minutes. The drama premiered Sept. 18 and was easily the week’s top debut. Wednesday didn’t fall far, finishing third with 1.02 billion minutes of viewing.

The Summer I Turned Pretty hit a new high — its fifth during the run of season three — with 776 million viewing minutes for the week of its finale. Another Prime Video series, Gen V (424 million minutes), rejoined the original series top 10 with the premiere of its second season.

CBS and the Television Academy have set the lineup of presenters for the 77th Emmy Awards this Sunday, Sept. 14. A pair of highly anticipated series returns — Wednesday and King of the Hill — pulled in big opening viewing numbers for their respective streamers. Kpop Demon Hunters also continued its strong summer run.

The first half of Wednesday season two delivered 50 million views worldwide (201.6 million hours of viewing divided by a four-hour, two-minute running time) for its premiere week, according to Netflix’s internal stats. That’s the most views for an English-language show’s opening week on the streamer since … season one of Wednesday in November 2022, which logged 50.1 million views (albeit for the full season rather than half of it).

Season one’s second week climbed to 60.3 million views, which is the high mark for a Netflix English-language series in recent years. Season two of Squid Game holds the premiere-week high for all languages with 68 million views.

Is this enough to get a smile out of Wednesday Addams? The return of the Addams Family spinoff series “Wednesday” starring Jenna Ortega is still a hit, notching 50 million views on Netflix in its first week on the service and easily hitting No. 1 on the Top 10 charts globally.

The show’s 50 million views is right in line with what Season 1 did when it debuted way back in November 2022 with 50.1 million views. At the time though, Netflix tracked hours watched rather than “views,” so “Wednesday” Season 1 topped the list with 341.2 million hours viewed, and that was with Netflix dropping all eight episodes of Season 1 at once. For Season 2, it’s been split into two parts, with Part 2 debuting September 3, so expect another huge viewership boost for Season 2 a month from now.

So though it’s a few thousand shy of the first season, “Wednesday” Season 2 is effectively the biggest debut for an English-language Netflix series ever.

“Wednesday” Season 2 has set a two-part premiere date for this fall.

“Wednesday” Season 2, Part 1 will premiere Aug. 6 on Netflix while Part 2 debuts less than a month later on Sept. 3, the streamer announced Wednesday. The two-part strategy marks a switch-up from last season, when “Wednesday” dropped all eight episodes of its first season on Nov. 23, 2022.

Netflix also unveiled the teaser for Season 2, which sees Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Addams returning to Nevermore, beginning with a particularly painful Tsa screening, which sees Wednesday unloading a handful of weapons on her person into a bin. The weapons are not what creates a problem for the Tsa agents, however, as Thing slid in some sunscreen that poses an obstacle for the airline.

Veterans of the prominent entertainment marketing firm Trailer Park are striking out on their own, launching a new company called Requiem.

Formed by partners Kelly Adelman, Adam Finkelstein and Dan Herbatschek, Requiem has already secured many of the top entertainment companies as clients, including Universal, Netflix, Warner Bros., Disney, Sony, Lionsgate and others.

Adelman was most recently co-president of Trailer Park, which is among the largest entertainment marketing firms in the world, overseeing campaigns for projects like Wicked, Deadpool & Wolverine, Oppenheimer, Wednesday and other film and TV projects. Finkelstein is also a veteran of the marketing firm.

Herbatschek, meanwhile, is an applied mathematician who operates the Ramsey Theory Group and will bring artificial intelligence and digital development expertise to the company.

The Emmy-nominated actress, who has gone on to star in hit projects including the Scream franchise, You, Wednesday and the upcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice sequel, recently told Vanity Fair in a wide-ranging interview that it was 2004’s Man on Fire that “changed the entire course of my existence.”

“I’m so appreciative of my six-year-old self who wanted to be a president and an astronaut… ecause I realize now that I was always looking for a way out,” Ortega added.

Now in its third edition, the organizers of the Awards assembled a 450-strong group of judges from around the world to deliberate on the 2024 noms, with the winners announced today and revealed first in Deadline.

The team behind the Global Entertainment Awards said they created them to honor the role marketing and promotion play the entertainment business, and to celebrate the people whose work inspires people to go to movies theaters, watch series and play games.

Categories include best trailer, key art, sizzle and sales reels, teasers, PR activation and social media spot, among others.

Yesterday, news hit that Netflix is developing a spin-off of "Wednesday," the streamer's mega-successful series starring Jenna Ortega. Makes sense, right? "Wednesday" is an undeniable hit -- one of the few original shows where Netflix doesn't need to obfuscate its data because it became a genuine cultural phenomenon. According to Bloomberg, Netflix is "eager to establish a pipeline of 'Addams Family' programs to build off the success of 'Wednesday.'" The spin-off is going to center on the Uncle Fester character, as played by Fred Armisen. 

To be clear, Armisen is hilarious. For my money, he's one of the funniest actors working today. Exclusive: Raúl Castillo (Cassandro), Jamie McShane (Wednesday) and Sam Keeley (Burnt) have joined the cast of HBO‘s Mark Ruffalo-led series, the Untitled Brad Ingelsby Task Force Project (w/t), currently in pre-production.

Castillo plays Cliff, Robbie’s lifelong best friend and devout cynic; McShane plays Perry, a feared and respected man who’s made a career out of mayhem; Keeley plays Jayson, the leader of a local crime organization.

The series is set in the working-class suburbs outside of Philadelphia and follows an FBI agent who heads a Task Force. His goal is to put an end to a string of drug-house robberies led by an unsuspecting family man. The Untitled Task Force project is based on an original idea by the creator of Mare of Easttown, Brad Ingelsby.

The trio joins the previously announced cast including Mark Ruffalo, Tom Pelphrey, Emilia Jones and Thuso Mbedu.

Netflix seems to be making the same mistake every big studio does — jumping the gun to launching big franchises and cinematic universes out of untested hits.

According to Bloomberg, the streamer is already developing a spin-off of "Wednesday," this time focused on Fred Armisen's Uncle Fester. This news comes before production even begins on "Wednesday" season 2. Granted, as Guillermo del Toro has sadly taught us all, just because something is said to be in development doesn't mean it will get to see the light of day. Still, the Bloomberg report says Netflix is "eager to establish a pipeline of 'Addams Family' programs to build off the success of 'Wednesday.'" This means that if this one doesn't work, they still have other ones to try out, as the streamer apparently wants to Dark Universe "The Addams Family."

Jenna Ortega has dropped out of “Scream 7” due to her “Wednesday” Season 2 shooting schedule, Variety has confirmed. The news of her exit comes after her co-star Melissa Barrera was fired from the horror movie due to Barrera’s social media posts about Israel and Palestine. Ortega’s departure was not caused by Barrera’s firing and was in the works months ago before the SAG-AFTRA strike began.

Ortega and Barrera co-starred in the 2022 revival of “Scream” and this year’s sequel “Scream 6.” They brought life back to the dormant horror franchise along with new and returning stars, and “Scream 7” was announced with director Christopher Landon.

Netflix has made some big changes to the way it reports streaming viewership.

The streamer will now report in average viewership for its programming as “views,” which is hours viewed divided by total runtime. While hours viewed will still be available, Netflix will now use this new metric for its Top 10 rankings, including the all-time Most Popular lists.

Additionally, Netflix has expanded the measurement window from 28 days to 91 days, in an effort to give films and shows time to grow.

This means some major shakeups, including Wednesday overtaking Stranger Things 4 as the most popular English-language series of all time. This is quite significant, considering that Stranger Things 4 benefitted from its whopping 13-hour runtime. It would have been difficult for any series to beat that, let alone one that was half that length like Wednesday (which speaks even more to the impressive viewership for the Addams Family series).

In this case, the story focuses on young Devi in Los Angeles as she tries to navigate love and get into Princeton.

Season 4 of Never Have I Ever once more provides Devi with many minefields on the academic and personal front. Still, Devi makes the best of everything, achieving her dream of becoming Sherman Oaks' valedictorian. In the process, loyalists finally get the big answer regarding who Devi ends up with and if it is indeed a genuine choice that fits the narrative.

Producer Steven DeKnight is walking back his critique from last week of “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega in which he called her “toxic” and “unprofessional.”

On Wednesday, he tweeted, “She’s an amazing talent. It was just an unfortunate situation to expose creative differences publicly, and also I’ll admit that writers are on edge because of the impending strike, myself included. A perfect storm.”

The results are in, and Netflix undoubtedly dominated the Nielsen U.S. streaming charts for 2022, led by originals including Stranger Things, Wednesday and Ozark — as well as acquisitions like Cocomelon and NCIS.

The streamer took home 11 of the top 15 spots on the overall streaming program list, and 13 spots among the streaming originals. Stranger Things came in at No. 1 on both lists with 52B minutes viewed across all 34 episodes of the series.

Ozark came in at No. 2 on the streaming originals chart and No. 4 overall with 31.3B viewing minutes. Wednesday‘s 18.6B minutes viewed put the series in third place among the streaming originals and 12th place overall — an impressive feat considering the new series only has eight episodes. Many of the series on the list have dozens or even hundreds of episodes.

Cobra Kai, Bridgerton, Virgin River, Dahmer, Love Is Blind, Inventing Anna, and The Crown rounded out the Top 10 for the streaming originals.

Netflix’s Harry & Meghan had a strong second week on the streaming TV charts, and Wednesday held onto its top overall ranking. Kindred, meanwhile, cracked the top 10 original series for the week of its premiere on Hulu.

Harry & Meghan amassed 1.69 billion minutes of viewing time in the United States for the week of Dec. 12-18, according to Nielsen. That’s up from 1.27 billion minutes, a gain of 34 percent, from its premiere week (Netflix released three episodes each week).

Wednesday ranked No. 1 overall for the fourth straight week, grabbing 2.16 billion minutes of viewing. That was down 35 percent week to week, but the series has racked up 16.81 billion minutes over its first four weeks, the second highest total of any streaming series since Nielsen began tracking them (behind the 19.5 billion for Stranger Things 4 in May and June).

Netflix’s spy thriller The Recruit finished third among original series, debuting with 925 million minutes of viewing time.

After speculation about the hit show’s fate, the streamer has confirmed the goth mystery series will return for another round.

“It’s been incredible to create a show that has connected with people across the world,” said showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar in a statement. “Thrilled to continue Wednesday’s tortuous journey into season two. We can’t wait to dive head first into another season and explore the kooky spooky world of Nevermore. Just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first.”

The pic is being described as Before Sunrise meets The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, the story follows two teens on the cusp of adulthood who meet and fall in love over four significant days of the year.

When Netflix renewed Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman” last month, the streamer was careful not to call the next chapter of the comic book adaptation a second season — but did not explain why. The reason: Netflix is considering releasing the next installment in batches a la “Stranger Things” Season 4, rather than its traditional binge model.

“Everything is on the table when it comes to ‘Sandman,’” Netflix’s head of U.S. and Canada scripted series Peter Friedlander tells Variety. “It’s an innovative show.”

That “everything is on the table” approach seems to be one Netflix, which launched its ad-supported tier last month, is embracing with open arms across the board in 2023.

Netflix’s “Wednesday” arrived with a bang. The fantasy series starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams tops the Netflix Top 10 chart for the week of Nov. 21-27 with 341.2 million hours viewed following its Nov. 23 premiere.

According to Netflix’s data, figures show over 50 million households have seen the series since its premiere, making it the record holder for the most hours viewed in a week for an English-language TV series on Netflix. “Stranger Things” Season 4 previously held the record with 335.01 million hours viewed, which was counted during the week of May 30 – June 5. Notably, Ryan Murphy’s “Monster” brought in 299.840 million for week of Sep 26 – Oct 2, but didn’t topple “Stranger Things” for No. 1.

If anyone’s up to the daunting task of updating such an iconic character’s fashion, it’s Colleen Atwood. The Oscar-winning costume designer, whose credits include “Chicago,” “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” pulled together a medley of creepy, kooky, mysterious, spooky and all-together ooky ensembles for Netflix’s “Wednesday.”

“With Wednesday, we can nail the iconic look right away with a nod to the original pointed collar, little print dress and modernized platform shoes, and then put her in an environment that she totally contrasts with: an American happy-time public school,” Atwood tells Variety of her reverence for the macabre teen’s original outfit. “Then you’ve given the nod to all that’s come before.

Following Christina Ricci’s Wednesday Addams is no easy feat. So when Jenna Ortega had to embody the iconic role in front of Ricci herself, it was daunting to say the least.

“I’ve never been so awkward. I felt like I didn’t know what to say to her,” Ortega told Variety at the red carpet premiere of the Netflix series “Wednesday” at the Hollywood Legion Theater. “I think she’s a fantastic character actress. I know her as Wednesday in my head, so it was intimidating. But she’s so wonderful and talented — she made it really easy.”

Asked how she felt wearing the Wednesday ensemble while filming scenes with Ricci, Ortega said, “It felt wrong. I wanted to give it to her.”
