Isabelle Fuhrman and Julia Stiles are reuniting for Wish You Were Here, where Fuhrman takes on her first leading role in a romance film. The romantic drama is adapted from the novel by Renée Carlino and follows Charlotte, a woman who has a deeply emotional night with a man, only for his disappearance to lead to a powerful reveal. Prior to leading the cast of the film, Fuhrman found acclaim in the horror genre, leading both Orphan and its prequel First Kill, the latter of which also starred her Wish You Were Here director Julia Stiles.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Stiles elaborated that while filming Orphan during the Covid-19 pandemic, she began adapting the script for Wish You Were Here. Stiles, impressed by Fuhrman’s talent and work ethic on the set of the horror prequel, saw her as the perfect choice for the leading role. This sparked a...

Steven C. Miller has directed a movie with a concept that is, simply put, fuckin’ cool.
“Werewolves,” written by Matthew Kennedy and now in theaters via Briarcliff Entertainment, is about a world where the annual supermoon turns everyone outside into huge, hungry werewolves that rip apart anyone in their path. Luckily, Frank Grillo plays a ripped scientist who is close to a cure, but also has to worry about keeping his family safe during yet another supermoon. There’s tons of in-your-face werewolf action, big guns and lots of blood and guts in this throwback flick that would feel right at home in a drive-in double feature.
Miller has plenty of experience with both action and horror films, directing movies like “Mauraders,” “First Kill” and “Silent Night” and working with big names like Sylvester Stallone and Nicolas Cage. He spoke with Variety about the joy of practical effects, how microbudget...

Aside from the wicked appeal of racy teenage drama, one of the key hooks that made the original Cruel Intentions a cult classic was the allure and charm of the relationship dynamics among the lead trio played by Sarah Michelle Gellar (Kathryn Merteuil), Ryan Phillippe (Sebastian Valmont), and Reese Witherspoon (Annette Hargrove). Given the risqué nature of the narrative, without support from a competent cast and proper characterization, the movie could have gone either way, but fortunately, it fared well in the end. The same challenge was faced by the recently released Amazon Prime TV series adaptation of the same name, which followed a similar premise of sex, politics, and influence-oriented powerplay orchestrated by stepsibling duo Lucien and Caroline. Aside from the fact that a story like this shouldn’t have been stretched to an eight-episode series in the first place, the character writing and acting on this occasion feels...

“Cruel Intentions” is getting a new life in Prime Video’s TV series adaptation, which takes the twisted tale to collegiate Greek life.
Sarah Catherine Hook and Zac Burgess star as Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont, respectively, step siblings who strike up a malicious deal for Lucien to seduce the VP’s daughter, Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), who Caroline sees as her ticket to make her sorority untouchable amid backlash for a controversial hazing incident.
The main characters follow closely in the footsteps of the 1999 movie, Selma Blair’s Cecile Caldwell transforming into Sara Silva’s CeCe Carroway. Sean Patrick Thomas also reprises his role from the movie as CeCe’s love interest, but with more of an age difference this time.
For a full breakdown of the “Cruel Intentions” cast and where you might have seen them before, see below.

The 18th century French novel “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” has withstood dozens of adaptations to stage and screen, including the prestigious 1988 film “Dangerous Liaisons” and the cheesy yet beloved 1999 teen film “Cruel Intentions.”
With Prime Video’s new eight-part “Cruel Intentions” series remake, author Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ story finally hits the wall. Here, both setting and story seem outdated, with the writers’ bids to stay true to skeevier elements of the novel and (especially) 1999 movie conflicting with attempts to update storylines for a modern audience.
The show opens at a stately, vaguely Southern-looking mansion filled with overdressed young women — a promising start for fans of the similarly sorority-set “Scream Queens” or of “American Horror Story: Coven,” or even “The Bachelor.”
But the new “Cruel Intentions” does not yield any supernatural or crime thriller chills, or even enough backstabbing among romantic rivals to inspire us to pick a side. Instead, it...

Fans of The Vampire Diaries can enjoy similar supernatural dramas like The Originals and Legacies. The CW's Nancy Drew and shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer offer fresh takes on supernatural stories. Series like First Kill, Wolf Pack, and Grimm are compelling options with unique takes on the supernatural genre.
Fans who love supernatural dramas will find a lot of shows like The Vampire Diaries to enjoy. The Vampire Diaries centered on Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and her hometown of Mystic Falls. Elena and her close circle of friends discover that vampires, werewolves, and witches exist and many have a long history with the small town. At the center of the supernatural stories were brothers (Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley) who became vampires decades earlier and have a history of falling for the same woman.
The Vampire Diaries creates an interesting mythology around its characters and produced two spin-off series.

Editor’s note: this list was originally published in October 2022. It has since been updated with new selections.
If horror’s limitless capacity for remakes, re-imaginings, and spinoffs teaches us anything, it’s that our nightmares never really change. Since before “Nosferatu” darkened the silent film scene in 1922 — heck, even before Bram Stoker terrified readers with “Dracula” in 1897 — vampires have transfixed audiences with their chilling blend of romance and menace. Movies like “Twilight” and “Interview with the Vampire” are memorable for weaving epic undead dramas for the big screen, but vampire sagas have arguably seen more creative permutations on TV, with whole casts of blood-sucking stars appearing in shows like “True Blood” and “Castlevania.”
The best vampire TV shows examine the archetypal underpinnings of the gothic-infused subgenre by referencing them in unexpected ways. Classic situational comedies like “Dark Shadows” make entertaining light of garlic, coffins, and the (pun intended) stakes of it all.
If horror’s limitless capacity for remakes, re-imaginings, and spinoffs teaches us anything, it’s that our nightmares never really change. If you watched the Season Two finale of The White Lotus, you know what happened to Jennifer Coolidge’s frazzled, impossibly wealthy Tanya. Study Reveals Most Inclusive Episodic TV Programming; Greg Berlanti, Ava DuVernay Top Producers List
Just in time for Monday’s Emmy awards, the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and Dr. Stacy L. Smith, along with the the Adobe Foundation, have unveiled The Inclusion List for episodic programming, which recognizes the most inclusive series in broadcast, cable and streaming.
Following a similar effort for films, the list analyzes on-screen and behind-the-camera personnel from more than 500 programs to determine the 100 most inclusive broadcast and cable series from the 2021-22 broadcast season, as well as streaming series from 2021 to 2023. The project also recognizes 20 producers responsible for the most inclusive content.
“The goal of the Inclusion List is to recognize the stories and storytellers who are taking inclusion seriously and whose content reflects their values,” said Dr. Smith, founder of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. “With today’s release of the Inclusion List for broadcast/cable and streaming series, we are excited to acknowledge the creative voices championing inclusion across the spectrum of episodic content.

Netflix originals like Stranger Things and Virgin River have managed to beat the odds and have long runs on the platform. House of Cards and The Crown, two of Netflix's early original series, were able to conclude their stories and give viewers a proper ending. Cobra Kai and BoJack Horseman have both found success on Netflix, with Cobra Kai confirmed for a sixth season and BoJack Horseman ending its run in 2020.
Not many Netflix original series get long lifespans on the platform, but some lucky shows manage to beat the odds and make it past the first couple of seasons and on to a full run. Netflix has a habit of canceling its own supernatural teen shows despite their popularity, which is ironic considering the success of the genre on the platform. Some cancellations are due to valid reasons, like the Covid-19 pandemic, but others, like The Order and Warrior Nun, are canceled without explanation. Netflix may perceive the genre as niche, but the immediate success of School Spirits on the platform contradicts this belief.
Netflix's pattern of canceling shows in a particular genre is ironic given the series that's trending on the platform right now. In 2011, Netflix started producing its own original series. Since then, the streaming service has developed hundreds of TV shows across a myriad of genres. Some have lasted several seasons and had long, successful runs, but others weren't so lucky. Over the years, Netflix has canceled many of its original series before they had a chance to find their footing or audience.

Following recent cancelations, pressure is on for The Witcher season 4 to succeed as Netflix's fantasy shows have struggled to last past a couple of seasons. The cancelation of Shadow and Bone has put even more pressure on The Witcher, with the show's cast and crew feeling the need to perform above expectations to avoid a similar fate. With the recasting of Geralt and the scrutiny it has brought, season 4 of The Witcher must revert to its initial success to avoid an earlier end than expected.

With so many streaming platforms and broadcast channels, it's a challenge for shows of any genre to find an audience and thrive. This is especially true of the horror genre, which feels more niche in appeal than sitcoms and prestige dramas. However, not every cancellation has to do with low viewership, particularly with recent changes across the entertainment industry. From studio politics to fickle viewer attention, some shows get cut short for the oddest of reasons.
These horror shows were each canceled for relatively unconventional reasons, not entirely having to do with ratings or production costs. With everything from acclaimed international productions to adaptations of popular licensed properties, nothing is safe from behind-the-scenes drama and obtuse content strategies. The only thing scarier than some of these shows is the inane rationale that ended them before their time.

With the streaming bubble bursting and entertainment companies retooling their vision for the future of television, it seems like every new day yields a polarizing series cancellation. From viewership stats to marketing pitfalls and budgetary concerns, TV series are seeing the plug pulled at a seemingly faster rate than ever before — in some cases, after production has been completed and even before they’ve had a chance to air.
For example, after outcry over recently canned series like “1899,” “First Kill” and “Warrior Nun,” Netflix’s new co-ceos Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters said they have never canceled a “successful show.” Platforms like AMC, Starz, Showtime and HBO Max have pulled shows despite having the majority of filming finished or nearly done so. And for Hulu, journalists and audiences raised disappointment following the cancellation of “Reboot.”

A fan campaign to save a Netflix show actually worked: according to The Hollywood Reporter, the previously canceled 2020 series "Warrior Nun" is set to be resurrected with three feature films. This news comes just weeks after series creator Simon Barry teased some type of return for the fantasy story, though THR reports that he noted it won't come from Netflix. "Warrior Nun" follows a young woman who wakes up after dying with new abilities that land her in the middle of an ongoing battle between heaven and hell. In a new video posted to the website Warrior Nun Saved, executive producer Dean English noted that the trilogy could also launch a "Warrior Nun" universe, which he says "could expand into film and TV series following characters that we already know."
The show's second season, released in 2022, was thought to be the last, but as with many a show that's ended...

The Miguel Wants To Fight cast features young up-and-coming actors with recognizable faces from Marvel, Netflix, and more. Tyler Dean Flores plays Miguel, a 17-year-old who wants to get into his first fight before moving to a new town. Imani Lewis, Christian Vunipola, Suraj Patha, Raul Castillo, and Dascha Polanco also join the cast in various roles, each with their own unique backgrounds and previous acting experiences.

Laura Benanti has left Amazon’s upcoming TV adaptation of “Cruel Intentions.”
The Tony-winner was set to appear in the recurring guest star role of Caroline’s (Sarah Catherine Hook) mother, Claudia.
“Unfortunately due to a scheduling conflict, I’m no longer able to participate in ‘Cruel Intentions,’” Benanti told me Thursday afternoon. “I’m sure they’ll find a wonderful actress to play this role.”
Benanti co-stars in the upcoming “No Hard Feelings,” the raunchy coming-of-age movie headlined by Jennifer Lawrence and Andrew Barth Feldman. She’s also currently sharing the stage with Matthew Broderick in an off-Broadway production of A.R. Gurney’s “Love Letters.”
Variety exclusively reported on June 1 that the stars of the “Cruel Intentions” show will be: Hook; Zac Burgess (“Totally Completely Fine”) as Lucien; Khobe Clarke as Scott; Brooke Lena Johnson as Beatrice; Sara Silva as CeCe; Sean Patrick Thomas (the original “Cruel Intentions” film,...
