With the first episode of The Sympathizer premiering this past weekend on HBO, the world is seeing just how wild this adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is. A stunning blend of war story, satire, and powerful drama, The Sympathizer boasts impressive performances from a cast featuring Hoa Xuande, Sandra Oh, and Robert Downey Jr in five distinct performances. Written by Don McKellar alongside Oldboy director Park Chan-wook, The Sympathizer is incredible. The seven-part series will be a big contender for series of the year. I got the chance to speak with the cast and producers about bringing the book to the screen, and their insights are below. Check it out.
First, I asked Sandra Oh about her layered experience making recent films like Umma, which focused on Korean identity, and the comedy Quiz Lady with Awkwafina, which touched on race and culture without making it a central part of the plot.

The Bequeathed is a K-drama that resembles many a thriller Korean film such as Umma or The Wailing in the way it is presented– terror in the background of a beautiful gray landscape that sucks you in. I suppose, even in movie form, this could lead to a drab viewing experience because of the slow burn. The Bequeathed is only 6 episodes, which is extremely short, even for a K-drama; however, it feels somewhat draggy in bits. In the last episode, it’s finally time for Seo-Ha to learn who is behind all the killings and why. What I found most interesting about the last two episodes of the show is the conundrum in Seo-Ha’s mind regarding her brother, Young-Ho. Throughout the series, she’s a little bit unlikeable, always questioning herself about whether she should be good or not. At the end of the show, we finally get an answer,...

As the aftereffects of the writers’ and actors’ strikes hit streaming in a big way, there’s not a lot of new content to offer subscribers early in 2024. Hulu still has some interesting things to offer in January, though.
The biggest new Hulu Original series in the new year is Death and Other Details, a locked room murder mystery starring Mandy Patinkin as Rufus Cotesworth, who is said to be the world’s greatest detective – at least in this universe. In the new series, Cotesworth comes to the rescue when an unfortunate soul is killed on lavish Mediterranean ocean liner, and he has to team up with the prime suspect (Violett Beane) to solve the crime.
The big Original movie premiere in January is Self Reliance, which follows a middle-aged dude (Jake Johnson) who gets randomly invited into a limo by Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg, and is soon offered...

Warning! Contains Spoilers for Run Rabbit Run.Although Run Rabbit Run is a streaming success on Netflix, its bad reviews, low Rotten Tomatoes score, and audience feedback paint another picture entirely. The Australian horror movie follows the intriguing story of Sarah (played by Succession's Sarah Snook), a fertility doctor whose young daughter mysteriously claims to be the woman's long-lost sister. Throughout its first week of release, Run Rabbit Run was frequently Netflix’s #1 movie, implying that it was a big hit with subscribers.
Run Rabbit Run did not fare well when it came to reviews, however, and even the reception from general Netflix viewers has been negative. The movie has a 38% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and only a 26% audience score. Run Rabbit Run’s ending and the slow-burn tone of the movie have been the main targets of criticism, although some defenders note that it is at least anchored...

Thanks to the whodunit nature of the Scream franchise and its devout fanbase, there’s a lengthy history of preserving secrecy to the point where not even the cast knows the killer’s identity. For franchise newcomer, veteran actor Dermot Mulroney, that’s especially the case with Scream VI.
Mulroney is no stranger to horror. Throughout his career, he has amassed an impressive slew of genre credits, including appearances in contemporary horror movies and series like “The Purge,” Umma, Insidious: Chapter 3, and Stoker. His enduring work in the genre meant it was an easy choice to join the cast of Scream VI.
The actor plays Detective Bailey, an NYPD cop investigating the latest string of grisly Ghostface murders.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with Mulroney ahead of the film’s release in theaters on March 10, 2023. The actor revealed just how little he knew about the project before and during production. Mulroney also...

The 2023 Super Bowl is still over two days away, but Sony Pictures has decided to give us an "early look" at a new (wordless) teaser trailer for the Adam Driver-led sci-fi thriller "65." It was appropriately released 65 hours ahead of Sunday's football kick-off. Sony is also indulging in some clever wordplay with the words "big game." It has two meanings, as you can tell. On one hand, it refers to the 2023 Super Bowl as the big football game — and also dinosaurs, in that Adam Driver is hunting some very big game.
In "65," as with HBO's excellent ongoing "The Last of Us," the male protagonist Mills (Driver) must keep a young girl called Koa (Ariana Greenblatt) safe from all kinds of monsters. The two are the only survivors of a crashlanding, one that has somehow taken Mills and his futuristic gun 65 million years into Earth's past. That's why there are so many dinosaurs around.

The 2023 Grammys were a star-studded affair marked by dozens of lively performances and history-making wins. For one overnight star, however, no amount of awards could've competed with having her dreams realized by none other than Harry Styles.

On his way up to the stage, Styles ran directly into Reina's arms, holding her in a sweet embrace. Brimming with joy, the duo's next few seconds together resulted in one of the evening's most heartwarming moments.

Everything Everywhere All at Once continues to be everywhere on awards lists.

Awards season is upon us, and if there's one thing we know for sure, it's that horror movies are about to get snubbed again. Because that's the norm for most major awards shows. In a world where Toni Collette can't get nominated for "Hereditary," Lupita Nyong'o can't get nominated for "Us," and Rebecca Hall can't get nominated for "The Night House," what hope is there for all the other awesome horror movie performances?
So if the Academy is going to ignore the vast majority of great horror genre performances — there are a few exceptions throughout history, but not terribly many — it falls to us to make sure the exceptional work this year doesn't get forgotten. And since it's been an unusually spectacular year for the horror genre, narrowing the great work down to a manageable size is itself a leviathan effort. We don't have space to celebrate every great horror actor,...

Amid a turbulent year for the film industry with dwindling theatrical releases and shuffling release slates, only nine wide release films from major studios had a female director in 2022 — and six of them came from just one studio.
In TheWrap’s annual survey of theatrical releases with at least one female director, Sony Pictures led its Hollywood peers with six of its 13 theatrical wide releases featuring female directors. On the flip side, Disney, Paramount and Lionsgate had entirely male-only wide release slates.
Paramount gave one film directed by a woman (Sanaa Lathan’s “On the Come Up”) a limited day-and-date release, while Disney moved one female-directed title (Domee Shi’s Pixar animated feature “Turning Red”) from theaters to streaming and shifted another to 2023. And Lionsgate, which has hired only one female filmmaker since 2016, released only four films on at least 1,500 screens — none directed by women.

The Basic with Ads plan costs 6.99 per month rather than 9.99 for the basic plan without ads, and gives subscribers access to a decent amount of the streaming service’s extensive library. However, according to Variety and GameSpot, there are a number of TV shows and movies that unfortunately aren’t available to watch for people subscribing to Netflix’s newest tier.

Your mileage may vary, but we think 2022 has been a rock-solid year for horror fans. From blockbusters like Jordan Peele's "Nope" and "Scream" to more niche titles like "We're All Going to the World's Fair" and "You Won't Be Alone," there's been plenty of choice for those of us who prefer our movies scary-side up. Sadly, not every movie is destined for the acclaim and financial success enjoyed by its peers. Sometimes their share of the box office is devoured by a much larger film, they suffer from poor (or no) marketing, or word of mouth turns people away. There are countless reasons why a movie might misfire, and frankly, sometimes success is a miracle.
It's also important to note that just because a movie doesn't find financial or critical success on release, that doesn't mean it's an objectively bad one. Some of today's most beloved horror classics were bombs in their day.

Despite its title, writer/director Bess Wohl’s debut feature “Baby Ruby” isn’t primarily about the titular infant. It instead takes interest in her beleaguered mother Jo (Noémie Merlant of “Portrait of a Lady on Fire”), a lifestyle influencer for an online magazine. Her husband, Spencer, is an “ethical” butcher. The pair, living in a lavish cabin, on paper, are the kind of seemingly perfect couple who put their idyllic baby pictures online to stir envy. They show the best parts of motherhood and sanitize the strain. But the bitter truth that Jo discovers is that you can’t hide the arduous parts.
The very idea of cinema showing the horrors and travails of motherhood isn’t new. It’s a trend gaining speed with films like “Kindred,” “Umma,” and “Lamb.” And yet, what separates Wohl’s film from everything else is how it dissects the performative exteriority of...

There’s a reason why the term “Dog Days of Summer” is frequently bandied about this time of year, and this weekend will probably be another great example of how the last few weeks of August affect any movies daring enough to be released. The studios usually know better, and let’s just say that they’re not going to throw out their biggest movies on a weekend when schools are reopening and people are returning from summer activities. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

In the 1991 comedy “L.A. Story,” local weatherman Steve Martin felt safe in prerecording some TV forecasts so he could take time off in the summer. Similarly, this week’s VOD report could have been filed last week with little fear of inaccuracy. Netflix’s 200 million Russo Bros. original “The Gray Man” immediately hit #1 on the streamer’s in-house chart after its online debut July 22, a week after the film’s nominal theatrical release.
Even at #1, a Netflix chart can tell only a small part of the story. A major new English-language new original is the default #1 more often than not. Last week’s #1 film was its contemporary update of Jane Austen’s “Persuasion”; this week it’s #4. Usually Netflix can live with that, but “The Gray Man” is its most expensive feature to date. Even a second week at #1 would be unusual; “Senior Year” with Rebel Wilson is its...

A new month has arrived, which means a fresh batch of movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix. Most monumentally, the beginning of the month saw the conclusion of “Stranger Things 4,” which began back in May but is just now finishing up. (There’ll be one more season before the series winds down.) Other new Netflix original series this month include the horror-comedy “Boo, Bitch,” the fourth season of “Virgin River” and the fifth season of all-ages animated spin-off “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous” (which we’ve heard has some surprising connections to this summer’s blockbuster “Jurassic World: Dominion”).
On the Netflix original films side of things, the biggest new release is undoubtedly “The Gray Man.” A nonstop action extravaganza from Joe and Anthony Russo, the directing duo behind “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgmane,” it stars Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling as dueling spies. There’s also a new...

We’re still in the thick of summer movie season and Netflix isn’t letting that escape them, with a robust roster of big budget, warm weather options.
This month we have original Netflix movies like Chris Williams’ animated adventure “The Sea Beast” (just as thrilling and artful as any Disney production), starry Jane Austen adaptation “Persuasion” (led by Dakota Johnson) and “The Gray Man,” an action-packed spectacular starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans and Ana de Armas, that gives Marvel a run for its money.
Also headed to the service are classics from Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan and more recent fare starring Tom Holland and Sandra Oh.
In other words, if it gets too hot, you can just stay inside with these great movies.

Remember that dark period on the 2022 calendar called June that didn’t feature the release of any new Stranger Things episodes? Well that nightmare is now over, friends. Netflix’s list of new releases for July 2022 is highlighted by the arrival of Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2.
The two episodes that constitute the “back half” of Stranger Things season 4 both premiere on July 1. And lest you think Netflix is shortchanging you with only two episodes, please be advised that the combined runtime of these two installments is pushing four hours! That’s a lot of minutes but then again, Stranger Things season 4 still has a lot of ground to cover. Will Eleven be able to help her friends and stop Vecna once and for all? We shall find out soon.

I missed seeing Umma earlier this year due to timing issues, so I was excited to catch up on Iris K. Shim’s first feature film now that it was finally making its home entertainment debut this month (she previously directed a documentary project and a few shorts as well). And while Umma treads a lot of familiar thematic territory that we’ve seen in so many other horror movies of the same ilk, there’s something about how Shim approached this story that I really enjoyed as it managed to subvert a few of my preconceived notions about certain elements I was expecting to see in this movie. Umma also features a great cast who all give engaging and genuinely likable performances that made me want to root for them throughout the story and some genuinely creepy visuals that have stuck with me over these last few days.

“Encanto” succeeded with the notion of “no villain, except generational trauma,” and Disney keeps that idea going with the delightful “Turning Red” (Walt Disney Home Entertainment), a young woman’s coming-of-age story that’s a metaphor for any number of growing-up issues, including that moment when the “model” child begins to chafe at parental domination. Stars: Sandra Oh, Fivel Stewart, MeeWha Alana Lee, Tom Yi, Odeya Rush, Dermot Mulroney | Written and Directed by Iris K. Shim
Sandra Oh fears she’s turning into her mother in Umma, the Sam Raimi-produced debut from writer-director Iris K. Shim. Using horror tropes to explore various elements of personal trauma, it’s light on scares, but compensates with strong character work and an emotionally engaging central dynamic.
Oh plays Amanda, a first-generation Korean-American woman who lives with her home-schooled teenage daughter Chrissy (Fivel Stewart) on a remote farm where they sell their own organic honey, with the help of a kind-hearted local shopkeeper (Dermot Mulroney). As the film begins, their main problem is that Amanda’s apparent allergy to electricity has begun to impact Chrissy’s burgeoning social life, especially after she befriends the shopkeeper’s visiting niece (Odeya Rush) and suddenly needs a phone for the first time in her life.

Photo: ‘Umma’ Overview Exciting, yet deeply unsettling – ‘Umma’ is worth the trip to the theater. Dive into the story of Amanda (portrayed by Sandra Oh) and her beloved daughter, Chris (portrayed by Fivel Stewart). Together, they run a family-owned and operated honey business on a small farm miles away from town. Most of the locals consider them odd, for one thing, because they live without electricity. That means no cell phones, no cars, and even no lights. Some may consider that old school, especially for a movie set in the late 2010s to early 2020s. However, for Amanda, the lack of electricity in her home is very near life-saving. Though eventually, when Amanda’s uncle brings her news of her mother’s passing, the lack of electricity is not able to suffice to keep Amanda safe. This weekend was the busiest in months for a specialty box office still trying to find its footing a year after movie theaters reopened, with the anime film “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” leading the pack with an estimated $17 million opening.
While the threat of another industry-crippling Covid-19 wave still looms, the end of this past winter’s Omicron surge has given new hope to indie and specialty distributors trying to get moviegoers back into arthouses. But like the wider blockbuster scene, the biggest specialty success was driven by younger moviegoers with “Jujutsu Kaisen 0,” which scored another victory for Sony’s import wing Crunchyroll.
In recent years, Sony has been able to consistently draw anime fans to theaters with releases of highly anticipated film adaptations of hit TV series like “Dragon Ball Super: Broly,” “My Hero Academia: World Heroes Mission” and, most recently, “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train,” which launched last year...

Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” continued its unstoppable run at the box office with a third weekend as the box office champ with an estimated $36.8 million, just getting to $300 million in North America in rapid time. The only movie to make that amount in all of 2021 was “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” so it’s a good sign that movies are starting to rebound. The Robert Pattinson comic book vehicle has made roughly the same amount overseas, although its release in China quickly fizzled out this past week.
