The 2025 Academy Award nominations are out, and they are whelming. The musical drama Emilia Pérez received the most nominations with 13, followed by Wicked and The Brutalist with 10 apiece, and then A Complete Unknown and Conclave with eight apiece.
Meanwhile, Dune: Part Two got only five nominations, down from the 10 that Dune: Part One received after it came out in 2021. This is despite the fact that Dune: Part Two was better reviewed than Part One and made more money at the box office than Part One. If you saw the movie, you know that Part Two finished adapting Frank Herbert's seminal 1965 sci-fi novel Dune, so it was no wonder that the second movie improved on the first; director Denis Villeneuve got to work with the juiciest parts of the book.
So why did Part Two receive fewer Oscar nominations? And why did Villeneuve not get a nomination for either of the films?...

Warner Bros. Discovery and CEO David Zaslav is on a downward spiral in terms of satisfying both fans like me and key creators. The studio earned the wrath of fans and filmmakers alike when they announced that films would be released on streaming on the same day as their theatrical release right after the pandemic under the leadership of Zaslav.
Now, the CEO’s treatment of legendary filmmaker Clint Eastwood’s supposed last film Juror #2 has been nothing short of insulting. Despite being one of the best films of the year, the Nicholas Hoult starrer was released in only 30 and odd centers with little marketing efforts from the studio. The absolute disregard for a legend like Eastwood makes me feel that Zaslav is not going to take any good creative decisions in the future.

With “Dune: Part Two,” director Denis Villeneuve did the unthinkable. He made a Hollywood sequel — really, the second part of his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s influential 1965 novel — that was more satisfying than the first. Everyone returned to the desert planet Arrakis, including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson and Josh Brolin, this time joined by new characters played by Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken and Léa Seydoux.
The movie feels both bigger and more intimate than before, full of action and just as much emotion. It’s a more complicated, nuanced piece of machinery from one of our most talented filmmakers and one of the more riveting big-screen spectacles of the year.
2021’s “Dune” was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, and won in six categories, including cinematography, production design, score and visual effects. What makes this accomplishment even more impressive is how many...

The Cinema Audio Society announced nominations on Tuesday, Jan. 7, honoring the best in cinematic sound mixing. Nominees for live-action motion picture sound mixing are A Complete Unknown, Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II, and Wicked. That includes four of the top five contenders in Gold Derby’s current racetrack odds for Best Sound. Deadpool & Wolverine is the outlier, ranked 10th in our odds. Missing from the Cas nominations list were the Golden Globe-leading Emilia Pérez, as well as three other films shortlisted by the Motion Picture Academy: Blitz, Alien: Romulus, and Joker: Folie à Deux.
The Cas Awards used to correlate with the Oscar for Best Sound Mixing, but that category was consolidated with Best Sound Editing for the 93rd annual awards honoring the best films of 2020. Viewers who haven't had the chance to see both Dune and Dune: Part Two now have the perfect opportunity to do just that on Netflix. Directed by visionary filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, both of the recent Dune films hit Netflix for the first time ever on January 1, 2024. Both films have been available to stream for HBO and Max subscribers but this marks a first for Dune content on Netflix. Additionally, the 1984 version of Dune directed by David Lynch, and the new prequel series Dune: Prophecy are also streaming on Max.
Dune and Dune: Part Two are collectively an adaptation of the 1965 novel Dune by Frank Herbert. The story follows Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, who moves to the desert planet Arrakis with his father, Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Issac), and his mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) after Leto is called upon by Emperor Corrino (Christopher Walken) to oversee spice production on the "Dune" planet.

Timothée Chalamet sets a new personal Rotten Tomatoes record with his Bob Dylan movie A Complete Unknown. Chalamet does his own singing as the legendary singer-songwriter, in a James Mangold-directed film about Dylan’s early days on the East Village folk scene, up to the day he changed everything by going electric at the Newport Folk Festival. Chalamet is generating Oscar buzz for his Dylan biopic, which hits theaters on December 25.
Audiences who’ve already caught Chalamet’s acclaimed A Complete Unknown performance are also buzzing about the star by taking to Rotten Tomatoes, elevating the biopic to a 95% Popcornmeter rating (formerly known as audience score) on the review aggregator. This score ties it with the star's previous solo Popcornmeter champion, Dune: Part Two. The film has crossed the 250+ verified reviews threshold stipulated by the site for a rating to be displayed.

As Max's Dune: Prophecy continues to expand the world of the Dune franchise, several characters continue to display a wide array of superhuman abilities. While some characters in the Dune universe, like the Bene Gesserit, have displayed the ability to brainwash people and see through time, others have been known to change their bodily appearance in seconds. Dune: Prophecy even introduced a unique character who can incinerate people with only a thought.
All the different superpowers that Dune's characters have displayed only make it one of the richest, most distinctive sci-fi franchises in popular culture. Max and Warner Bros. have only begun to scratch the survival of Dune's potential with Denis Villeneuve's two films and the prequel show Dune: Prophecy. At this point, so many unique powers have been presented in live-action, while many others are just waiting to be adapted from the Dune novels.

One of the glaring omissions from Monday’s Golden Globe nominations was that Denis Villeneuve’s epic sequel “Dune: Part Two” was not among the eight films in the best cinematic and box office achievement category.
Introduced for 2023’s ceremony where “Barbie” took home the statuette, eligible films must gross more than $150 million with a minimum of $100 million in the U.S. According to Box Office Mojo, 20 movies released in 2024 have grossed more than $100 million domestically, including Warner Bros’ “Dune 2,” which brought in more than $700 million globally.

How Did Timothee Chalamet Change Oscar Isaac’s Mind About His Bob Dylan Role In A Complete Unknown? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Oscar Isaac admitted that he initially questioned the casting of Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. The biopic is directed by James Mangold and based on a 2015 book by Elijah Wald. However, Isaac acknowledges he may have been mistaken in his initial judgment.

He was mesmerized by Herbert’s detailed descriptions of intergalactic ecology, which he likened to reading an “encyclopedia.” And the novels’ warnings...

Warning! This article contains minor spoilers for Dune: Prophecy.
Dune: Prophecy delves even deeper into the franchise by further exploring many Houses and factions of the Landsraad, connecting to Denis Villeneuve's Dune movies in the process. The ending of Dune: Prophecy episode 1 established each of the show's main characters, exploring a story set over 10,000 years before Paul Atreides was born. Naturally, though, Dune: Prophecy's characters link to the movies, adding invaluable context to the political landscape of the Landsraad, the ruling body that represents the Great Houses.
Many of these Great Houses are represented by the time of Dune: Prophecy episode 2's ending, as their members navigate schemes, deals, wars, marriage pacts, and other political elements to consolidate or grow their power. From the Sisterhood at the center of the show that is fighting against the titular prediction to Dune: Prophecy's mysterious Desmond Hart, the show has...

Dune: Prophecy took a winding path to the small screen, but showrunner Alison Schapker was more than ready to take the reins of HBO’s latest spinoff of a beloved Warner Bros.’ film franchise.
Alison Schapker
The six-episode series about the origin of the mysterious Bene Gesserit changed creative leadership a few different times until Schapker and Diane Ademu-John became co-creators and co-showrunners. When production began in late 2022, Schapker then took on the role of sole showrunner through its delivery to the network. It was familiar territory for the scribe, having most recently served as an executive producer on Westworld season four and showrunner on Altered Carbon season two. Overall, her sci-fi credentials were fine-tuned across two decades for various Bad Robot shows including Alias, Lost, Fringe, Almost Human and the aforementioned Westworld. The distribution deal between Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group and Legendary Entertainment will end in December, as both companies mutually agreed to conclude the partnership, The Wrap has exclusively learned.
Sony will still distribute Legendary’s “Animal Friends” on Aug. 15, 2025, a live-action animation hybrid R-rated comedy that stars Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa, Vince Vaughn and Aubrey Plaza. Legendary produced the film alongside Reynolds’ production company Maximum Effort and Prime Focus Studios.
Legendary and Sony first signed a multiyear worldwide film distribution partnership back in 2022 under which Sony Pictures marketed and distributed Legendary’s theatrical film titles, but the deal excluded existing projects, leaving Legendary’s biggest franchises like “Dune” and “Godzilla vs. Kong” to continue to be released by Warner Bros.
Under the pact, Sony distributed Legendary’s “The Book of Clarence,” the Biblical comedy from British singer-songwriter, music producer and filmmaker The Bullitts (aka Jeymes Samuel), in 2023, but the...

Spoilers are ahead for the Dune franchise and books.A classic sci-fi epic, Frank Herbert's 1965 Dune novel launched a beloved multimedia franchise, but how does Dune end? Most recently, the original book was adapted into a two-part film saga by Denis Villeneuve. With the filmmaker's Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two chronicling Paul Atreides' (Timothe Chalamet) rise to power, the upcoming Dune: Part Three aims to show the newly minted Emperor's downfall. Set 12 years after the ending of Dune 2, the third Dune movie will adapt Herbert's sequel, Dune Messiah.
2024 was the year of Dune for other reasons. In addition to the $711.8 million blockbuster Dune: Part Two, the franchise is releasing a prequel series, Dune: Prophecy. Set roughly 10,000 years before the events of Paul's story, the prequel spin-off will depict the formation of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood as well as the early days of the long-reigning Corrino Empire...

The universe of “Dune” expands on HBO on Sunday, Nov. 17, with the premiere of “Dune: Prophecy,” a prequel series set 10,000 years before the events of Frank Herbert‘s first novel. Based on Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson‘s “Sisterhood of Dune” novel, “Prophecy” is the origin story of the Bene Gesserit, a powerful sect that seeks to control the path of humanity. It was developed for television by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker and stars Emily Watson as Valya Harkonnen, the ruthless leader of the sisterhood. But does it live up to the Oscar-winning spectacle of Denis Villeneuve‘s recent “Dune” adaptations?

Why Did Zendaya Get 7 Minutes Screen Time in Dune 2021? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Zendaya’s Dune debut? Yeah, it was a whopping seven minutes. In a 155-minute movie, no less. That’s about 4.5% of the entire film—barely a cameo—and fans weren’t thrilled. Posters, trailers, and the whole press tour led everyone to believe Zendaya’s Chani would be front and center. Instead, her character was mostly a dream (literally) in Paul Atreides’ head. Cue the social media outrage. One fan even tweeted, “What Do You Mean Zendaya Is Only In Dune For Seven Minutes.” Same, though.
It turns out that director Denis Villeneuve had his reasons. He split Frank Herbert’s novel into two movies, calling it rich and complex. According to him, Dune needed that extra breathing room, which meant Zendaya’s Chani would stay mainly in the shadows until the sequel. Villeneuve didn’t have...

There are nine legendary stars who only need a Grammy to achieve the Egot grand slam of show business awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (see the gallery at the bottom of this post). None of them were on the list of 2025 Grammy nominees, though, when they were announced on Friday morning, but there is a nominee this year who could get three quarters of the way there if he wins: composer Kris Bowers.
Bowers is nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for his work on the movie musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” It’s the third nomination for the composer, who previously contended for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella for “Blue Skies” in 2020 and then in the score soundtrack race in 2022 for the Netflix series “Bridgerton.” A victory this year for “Color Purple” would put him just a Tony away from achieving Egot status.

Director Denis Villeneuve and composer Hans Zimmer are determined to get an Oscar nomination for Zimmer’s “Dune: Part Two” score. According to Variety, Warner Bros. has submitted the sci-fi sequel’s score to the Academy despite the question as to whether the score will qualify under Academy rules.
The rules state that “in cases such as sequels and franchises from any media, the score must not use more than 20% of pre-existing themes and music borrowed from previous scores in the franchise.” Zimmer’s “Dune: Part Two” score uses themes from the first film, and observers expect that it’s more than 20%, though the Music Branch has not yet reviewed the score to make the determination. Whether it makes the cut for contention will be revealed when the shortlist voting period begins on Dec. 9.
In a forthcoming podcast interview with Variety, Villeneuve and Zimmer made the case for the score’s Oscar eligibility.

Mike Flanagan and David Dastmalchian are both prominent figures in the horror world, so it’s somewhat surprising that their first collaboration came not on a horror project, but on Flanagan’s upcoming movie The Life of Chuck – which, despite being a Stephen King adaptation, is a drama. Today, Deadline has announced that Flanagan and Dastmalchian are set to work together again… and this time the project is a horror film. Flanagan will be producing Epilogue, which Dastmalchian will star in alongside Flanagan’s wife and frequent collaborator Kate Siegel. Michael Fimognari, who worked as cinematographer on most of Flanagan’s work and directed episodes of The Midnight Club and The Fall of the House of Usher (not to mention the films To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You and To All the Boys: Always and Forever), will be directing, working from a screenplay by Luke Barnett and Tanner Thomason.

Born September 1, 1996, Zendaya rose to fame as a child star on the Disney Channel, with fan-favorite characters in “Shake It Up” and “K.C. Undercover.” The singer and actress soon started dabbling in feature films, where she earned the plum role of Mj, Tom Holland‘s love interest, in Marvel’s “Spider-Man” movies. Zendaya’s biggest claim to fame was in 2020, when she became the youngest-ever Emmy winner in the Best Drama Actress category for playing a teen drug addict on “Euphoria.” Her career continues to blossom thanks to recent releases like “Challengers” (directed by Luca Guadagnino) and “Dune” (directed by Denis Villeneuve).

Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two won deserved popular and critical acclaim, but for all the sequel's success a subtle change from the book's story proved that Villeneuve's version of the story must come to an end after the next installment. In many ways, Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two have been faithful retellings of Frank Herbert's magnum opus. The novel's message of the dangers of blind faith was masterfully delivered, alongside impressive visual spectacle. And yet, while many features remained the same in the two movies, some story details were necessarily altered.
One of the biggest differences between Dune the novel and Dune the two-part cinematic experience concerns characterization. While many of the same figures feature in both versions of the story, the ways they are presented creates a radically different impression. The best example of this is Paul Atreides' sister, Alia. Could Timothée Chalamet’s Character in Dune Be Hiding a Dark Prophecy That Could Change the Course of the Universe? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Hold onto your still suits, folks! Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides might be the chosen one of Arraki. But what if there’s some dark prophecy lurking in the dunes?
Paul Atreides already owns the big screen in Dune: Part One (2021). He made a fiery comeback in Dune: Part Two (2024). He’s also booked for Dune 3, which draws from Frank Herbert’s Dune: Messiah. But the real kicker? Dune: Prophecy’s ready to step away from Paul’s heroic saga to dive deep into the Bene Gesserit’s shadowy origins. This prequel is based on Sisterhood of Dune by Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert. It rewinds the clock by a casual 10,000 years, unearthing the very foundations of this power-wielding sisterhood.

“One doesn’t come out of the womb wanting to be a cinematographer,” says Greig Fraser, the go-to director of photography for such helmers as Garth Davis, Matt Reeves, Denis Villeneuve and more.
Fraser has swiftly become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after cinematographers after receiving critical acclaim for his work on “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “Dune: Part One, “Dune: Part Two” and “The Batman.” Variety is honoring him as a Billion Dollar Cinematographer at the Newport Beach Film Festival.
He has also become one of the most influential DPs, especially to aspiring filmmakers and film lovers alike.
“You learn about filmmakers,” he says. “I remember being 7 or 8, writing a script about a war film, and we had some toy guns and army jackets, and we thought, ‘Why can’t we make it?’” he says over the phone as he walks home from a shoot in the U.

Zendaya is back with the cast of Dune: Part Two!
The 28-year-old actress was spotted in two chic outfits while attending a For Your Consideration awards screening of the movie on Saturday (September 21) in New York City.
Zendaya was joined by co-stars Timothee Chalamet and Austin Butler at the event, which serves as a clear reminder that awards season is upon us!
It looks like Timothee is covering up a shorter hairstyle with his hat.
Warner Bros. has not yet revealed its awards slate for the upcoming 2025 Oscars, but it appears clear that Dune: Part Two will be the studio’s crown jewel. Gold Derby currently has the film positioned as a frontrunner in the Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay categories. The film likely will get plenty of attention in the design categories as well.
Dune: Part One was nominated for 10 Oscars back in 2022 and won six of them.

The Killer's Game includes a recognizable cast of characters from notable action movies around star Dave Bautista. The Guardians of the Galaxy and Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran spent years working to get the 2024 action movie off the ground. Directed by J.J. Perry, Bautista's The Killer's Game focuses on an assassin who orders a hit on himself after a terminal illness diagnosis, but he is then forced to fight for his survival after he discovers he was misdiagnosed.
From the moment the movie begins until The Killer's Game's ending, the movie is built around Bautista in the lead role and his character's new romantic relationship. Along the way, the movie introduces multiple characters from the assassin underworld that Joe Flood has been part of for 20 years. The Killer's Game cast some significant stars to play these various roles, whether they were ultimately allies or foes for Bautista's hero.

The Rotten Tomatoes scores for The Killer's Game are pretty polar between critics and audiences. This is the second time this year that Dave Bautista stars in a leading role, portraying an assassin named Joe Flood who gets misdiagnosed with a fatal disease. As Bautista expands his acting resume beyond Marvel and franchises, The Killer's Game failed to impress critics and even became the actor's lowest-grossing movie in his career after just collecting $2.6 million domestically on its opening weekend.
Despite some lows, The Killer's Game seems to have at least won over audiences who did see the movie. On Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score for the new Bautista movie is currently at 78%, based on over 100 ratings. This is in contrast to the critical score, which was calculated at a poor 39% per 33 reviews.

Denis Villeneuve has clarified that his 'Dune' films are "not like a trilogy".The 56-year-old filmmaker plans to depart the blockbuster sci-fi series after one last epic if 'Dune: Messiah' goes ahead, but he has explained that the third movie based on Frank Herbert’s classic novel, will have its "own identity".He told Vanity Fair: “It’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych. It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished.“If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there, it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity.”The third movie will follow 2021's 'Dune: Part One...
