The 2025 Academy Award nominations are out, and they are whelming. The musical drama Emilia Pérez received the most nominations with 13, followed by Wicked and The Brutalist with 10 apiece, and then A Complete Unknown and Conclave with eight apiece.

Meanwhile, Dune: Part Two got only five nominations, down from the 10 that Dune: Part One received after it came out in 2021. This is despite the fact that Dune: Part Two was better reviewed than Part One and made more money at the box office than Part One. If you saw the movie, you know that Part Two finished adapting Frank Herbert's seminal 1965 sci-fi novel Dune, so it was no wonder that the second movie improved on the first; director Denis Villeneuve got to work with the juiciest parts of the book.

So why did Part Two receive fewer Oscar nominations? And why did Villeneuve not get a nomination for either of the films?...

Unsurprisingly, the Canadian helmer was also Letterboxd’s most-watched director of the year. The Cinema Audio Society announced nominations on Tuesday, Jan. 7, honoring the best in cinematic sound mixing. Nominees for live-action motion picture sound mixing are A Complete Unknown, Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II, and Wicked. Oscar Isaac and Ana de Armas are now set to star in a new series called Bananas. Isaac is an Emmy-nominated actor known for his parts both in independent films such as Inside Llewyn Davis and Ex Machina, and mainstream works like Dune: Part One and the new Star Wars franchise films. De Armas had her breakout role in the Rian Johnson mystery comedy Knives Out, and from there has gone on to get big parts in other mainstream films. One of the glaring omissions from Monday’s Golden Globe nominations was that Denis Villeneuve’s epic sequel “Dune: Part Two” was not among the eight films in the best cinematic and box office achievement category.

Introduced for 2023’s ceremony where “Barbie” took home the statuette, eligible films must gross more than $150 million with a minimum of $100 million in the U.S. According to Box Office Mojo, 20 movies released in 2024 have grossed more than $100 million domestically, including Warner Bros’ “Dune 2,” which brought in more than $700 million globally.

According to Dick Clark Productions, the award recognizes “the year’s most acclaimed, highest-earning and/or most viewed films that have garnered extensive global audience support and attained cinematic excellence.”

Needless to say, “Dune 2’s” exclusion was pronounced, even with the film still scoring two noms for best picture (drama) and Hans Zimmer’s original score (which is not Oscar eligible...

The 28-year-old American actor is set to receive the Arlington Artist of the Year Award at the 2025 Santa Barbara International Film Festival (Sbiff). This news comes less than a week after he and his “A Complete Unknown” director James Mangold were named as the Visionary Tribute honorees at the upcoming Gotham Awards. On Wednesday, The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced that the “Challengers” star Zendaya will receive the Spotlight Tribute for her performance as Tashi Donaldson in the Luca Guadagnino film.

Zendaya joins Timothee Chalamet and James Mangold, Angelina Jolie, the cast of “Sing Sing,” the cast of “The Piano Lesson,” and Denis Villeneuve as honorees at this year’s Gotham Awards.

The distribution deal between Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group and Legendary Entertainment will end in December, as both companies mutually agreed to conclude the partnership, The Wrap has exclusively learned.

Zendaya’s Dune debut? Yeah, it was a whopping seven minutes. In a 155-minute movie, no less. That’s about 4.5% of the entire film—barely a cameo—and fans weren’t thrilled. Posters, trailers, and the whole press tour led everyone to believe Zendaya’s Chani would be front and center. Instead, her character was mostly a dream (literally) in Paul Atreides’ head. Cue the social media outrage. One fan even tweeted, “What Do You Mean Zendaya Is Only In Dune For Seven Minutes.” Same, though.

Bowers is nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for his work on the movie musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” It’s the third nomination for the composer, who previously contended for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella for “Blue Skies” in 2020 and then in the score soundtrack race in 2022 for the Netflix series “Bridgerton.” A victory this year for “Color Purple” would put him just a Tony away from achieving Egot status.

Director Denis Villeneuve and composer Hans Zimmer are determined to get an Oscar nomination for Zimmer’s “Dune: Part Two” score. According to Variety, Warner Bros. has submitted the sci-fi sequel’s score to the Academy despite the question as to whether the score will qualify under Academy rules.

The rules state that “in cases such as sequels and franchises from any media, the score must not use more than 20% of pre-existing themes and music borrowed from previous scores in the franchise.” Zimmer’s “Dune: Part Two” score uses themes from the first film, and observers expect that it’s more than 20%, though the Music Branch has not yet reviewed the score to make the determination. Whether it makes the cut for contention will be revealed when the shortlist voting period begins on Dec. 9.

In a forthcoming podcast interview with Variety, Villeneuve and Zimmer made the case for the score’s Oscar eligibility.

Mike Flanagan and David Dastmalchian are both prominent figures in the horror world, so it’s somewhat surprising that their first collaboration came not on a horror project, but on Flanagan’s upcoming movie The Life of Chuck – which, despite being a Stephen King adaptation, is a drama. Today, Deadline has announced that Flanagan and Dastmalchian are set to work together again… and this time the project is a horror film. Flanagan will be producing Epilogue, which Dastmalchian will star in alongside Flanagan’s wife and frequent collaborator Kate Siegel. Michael Fimognari, who worked as cinematographer on most of Flanagan’s work and directed episodes of The Midnight Club and The Fall of the House of Usher (not to mention the films To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You and To All the Boys: Always and Forever), will be directing, working from a screenplay by Luke Barnett and Tanner Thomason.

This is the second time this year that Dave Bautista stars in a leading role, portraying an assassin named Joe Flood who gets misdiagnosed with a fatal disease. As Bautista expands his acting resume beyond Marvel and franchises, The Killer's Game failed to impress critics and even became the actor's lowest-grossing movie in his career after just collecting $2.6 million domestically on its opening weekend.

Despite some lows, The Killer's Game seems to have at least won over audiences who did see the movie. On Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score for the new Bautista movie is currently at 78%, based on over 100 ratings. This is in contrast to the critical score, which was calculated at a poor 39% per 33 reviews.
