Our look at geeky crowdfunding projects returns, with a selection of indie films, coding books and other stuff worth your consideration...
Crowdfunding Friday's been off air for a good couple of months now, during which time we've been drinking Tizer and playing a 1990 Game Boy in a cub tent in our front room. But now we're back, having grown weary of Tizer, run out of AA batteries and broken the cub tent by standing up too quickly in the middle of the night.
Cub tent madness aside, we're happy to share with you some of the delectable crowdfunding goodness we've found during our trawls through the internet this week, as well as a great Star Wars-related one we received via the gift of email. If you have a geek-friendly campaign you'd like to tell us about, do feel free to get in touch...

Here's another cool sci-fi short film for you to check out called "Closer." It was directed by Angelo Licata, who is behind the Star Wars fan film, Dark Resurrection. The new short actually ended up being pretty immersive, and I think a lot of you will enjoy it. Here's the synopsis:
Something terrifying is happening to the Earth. Luke and Sarah, unaware of the danger, are just worried about having a passionate offhand camping weekend. Two unexpected guests will ruin their plans.
Here's a note from the filmmakers:
The movie pays homage to those films that have influenced an entire generation, including the filmmakers of this project, and expresses the nostalgia for a specific style of film-making manifesting in the 80's vibe that permeates the film.

Do you have 2 hours to spare? Because if you do, then you need to watch two amazing Italian language tribute films to Star Wars called “Dark Resurrection” (vol 0 and vol. 1). It is quite literally one of the most amazing series of fan shorts ever made. In fact they are potentially better than the original Star Wars design from George Lucas. Now that is a terrible bit of logic considering these shorts wouldn’t exist without Lucas’ vision and I am not trying to bash the gloriousness that is Star Wars but both these shorts show the amazing visions people have for the expanded Star Wars universe that aren’t being tapped into films or TV series. It is sad really because there is so much compelling stuff and ways to package the stuff creatively.

Quality fan films are a needle in a haystack. A haystack made up of bad fan films. It doesn't take much time or effort to make a bad fan film because anyone with an iPhone can shoot what they think is a Star Wars or Firefly movie. A good one, though, is rare because it's akin to a real production. It takes dedication, money, talent and even more money. The makers of Star Wars: Dark Resurrection Vol. 0 have all of that. A prequel to a previously released fan film, the 2007 Dark Resurrection Vol. 1, this is a fan film worthy of dropping the word "fan." Check out the epic 40-minute labor of love after the break. Thanks to Topless Robot [1] for the heads up on this film. The film was made in Italy so you'll have to watch it in subtitles, which you toggle on the status bar. Here's the...
