Another Carl Hiaasen novel is being developed as a TV series with Bill Lawrence onboard.
Variety has learned exclusively that a series version of Hiaasen’s novel “Skinny Dip” is currently in development at Max with Adam Horowitz & Edward Kitsis set to write and Lawrence attached as an executive producer.
The logline for the one-hour dramedy series describes it as “a screwball-romantic-comedy-triangle about murder, revenge, and greed in the Everglades.”
Lawrence, a longtime fan of Hiaasen, is currently the creator and showrunner on the series adaptation of “Bad Monkey” at Apple TV+. That show debuted at Apple in August 2024 and was renewed for a second season in December.
Horowitz and Kitsis will write and executive produce “Skinny Dip.” Lawrence, Jeff Ingold, and Liza Katzer will executive produce via Doozer. Warner Bros. Television, where Doozer is under an overall deal, is the studio.

An untitled UFO conspiracy thriller from Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski has ignited an out-of-this-world bidding war, THR reports.
Written by Zach Baylin, the package also includes legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
Little is known about the plot, but it’s described as “All the President’s Men with UFOs.” No stars are attached and the budget range is unclear, but it is seeking a greenlight.
Part of the appeal is the veneer of authenticity to the pitch. Former United States Air Force officer David Grusch, who made headlines in 2023 when he testified before Congress that the government has been studying “non-human”spacecrafts and pilots, is said to be consulting on the project.
Amazon, Apple, Lionsgate, Paramount, and Warner Bros. are among the interested studios, with sources saying bidding is escalating “quickly and aggressively.”

Director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are finishing off F1 – and then moving onto a UFO movie.
If you can take a long-dormant action flick from almost four decades ago, remix some of the ingredients and produce a film that grosses nearly $1.5bn then you’re going to find yourself in demand. That’s precisely the spot that director Joseph Kosinski and Jerry Bruckheimer find themselves in right now.
Although Kosinski wasn’t quite able to fully reinvigorate the Tron franchise back in 2010 with Tron: Legacy the director teamed with Jerry Bruckheimer (who we spoke to last year) to put everything together in 2022 with Top Gun: Maverick. It involved reconfiguring the 1986 film’s best bits, adding in some incredible practical action sequences and getting the best out of Tom Cruise’s movie star persona. The result was the biggest hit of Tom Cruise’s career.

Will Smith is a bonafide movie star, and you don't get to become a movie star if you're not multi-faceted. Smith's career is one that clearly demonstrates his versatility and then some; he's got a physicality and swagger that lends itself easily to an action film lead, as seen in the "Bad Boys" franchise as well as movies like "Suicide Squad" and "Bright." He has the emotional depth and soulfulness to take on a variety of dramatic roles, as in "King Richard," "The Pursuit of Happyness," "Ali," and "Six Degrees of Separation." He also has a natural comic timing — honed during his years starring on the wildly successful sitcom "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" — which crops up in many of his performances, but has also led to winning leading roles in the rom-com "Hitch" and Disney live-action remake "Aladdin."

Hollywood is full of comeback stories, but Matthew Fox decided to skip the sequel. After ruling TV with Lost, he took a swing at movies — only to land in a Jeff Bridges-led box office disaster that made less than $500K on a $1.8 million budget. Yeah, that certainly makes you rethink your whole career.

Instead of chasing another shot, Fox stepped away from Hollywood altogether. Can you blame him? One minute, you’re headlining a hit series; the next, you’re starring in a movie no one watched.

“No Challengers in original score… I feared days like this would come,” New York Times culture writer Kyle Buchanan lamented on social media after the Oscar nominations were announced. “I think the lack of an original score nomination for Challengers renders the entire Oscar nominations list invalid,” opined Hollywood Reporter commentator Daniel Feinberg. When it comes to the Academy Awards, Best Original Score isn’t usually a category rife with controversy, but this year’s lineup stoked outrage when Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross weren’t nominated for their pulse-pounding compositions from the provocative tennis drama.
So what happened?
Just weeks earlier, Reznor and Ross won the Golden Globe for their score, defeating four of the films that did get Oscar nominations: The Brutalist, Conclave, Emilia Pérez, and The Wild Robot. The fifth Oscar nominee, Wicked, missed the cut at the Globes.

John Dutton's body is barely cold, but it's already time to look towards the future of the "Yellowstone" universe. The massively popular Western series created by Taylor Sheridan signed off with a strange, divisive Travis-filled final batch of episodes in December 2024, wrapping up an extended two-year off-season (technically marketed as a midseason) with an ending that saw the Kevin Costner's Dutton family patriarch kick the bucket, with his black sheep son Jamie (Wes Bentley) soon following.
The ending of "Yellowstone" was far from perfect, but the show seeded enough goodwill among hooked viewers over the years that whatever Sheridan does next, it's clear that millions will still tune in. The multi-hyphenate cowboy creative's upcoming filmography is as overstuffed as ever, but in the ever-changing landscape of IP-driven TV production, one forthcoming project seems to be coming together nicely: "The Madison." We still have a lot of questions related...

For all the blood, sweat, and manpower that ABC poured into finding a successor to "Lost" (a show that shaped the course of television in the early 21st century), I'd bet dollars to donuts the network never wagered it would take the shape of "Once Upon a Time."
Conceived by "Lost" alumni and "Tron: Legacy" writers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, "Once Upon a Time" casts "House, M.D." veteran Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan, a seemingly unremarkable bail bond agent who, just like any hero's journey protagonist worth their salt, discovers there's far more to her world (and destiny) than she ever realized. The show itself combines jigsaw puzzle-style storytelling with well-known fairy tale characters -- especially the Disneyfied versions, which was possible thanks to ABC being owned by the Mouse House -- to create a dense lore and elaborate mythos that rivals anything J.J. Abrams or Damon Lindelof could ever hope to dream of.

Hollywood has seen quite a lot of wild and controversial confessions, ranging from stars’ private lives to their big screen ones. While some of these leave fans wheezing from laughter (like the effect Jennifer Lawrence’s confessions have), others are more than enough to have them cringing to the core — just like the one Olivia Wilde made while taking a dig at her ex-husband.

But it seems like even that one marriage failed brutally, considering how she ended up taking the worst jab at the life she spent with her ex-husband: She teased she had s-x with her then-boyfriend Jason Sudeikis “like Kenyan marathon runners.”

Jill Roberts, played by Emma Roberts, is one of the best Ghostfaces in the Scream franchise and someone needs to figure out how to get her back into the series. Where Scream 4 ranks in the Scream franchise is up for debate, but Jill Roberts has always been one of the best characters to don the Ghostface mask. Scream 4, stylized SCRE4M, takes place on the 15th anniversary of the Woodsboro murders depicted in Scream. Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) returns to town after 10 years when murders start occurring once again.
Like the other films in the Scream franchise, Scream 4 combines slasher movie tropes with knowing winks at the audience. Along with the usual satirical elements about sequels and horror, this 2011 movie includes relevant commentary about social media and the pursuit of internet fame, themes that are somehow even more relevant over a decade later. Hollywood star Olivia Wilde warns social media and the embrace of fame pose an existential threat to filmmaking as a storytelling art.
“Directors have to decide at a certain point do you want to be a celebrity or an artist. Because of social media, it’s becoming even more combined to something that is quite dangerous for the art form.,” Wilde said while taking part in an informal conversation at the Red Sea Film Festival on Saturday.
“When you conflate filmmaking or acting with large scale acceptance, you immediately cut off every opportunity to do any risky work. So it was important to me to never become overly focused on being accepted or loved,” she added.
To get away from the Hollywood bubble, the actor-turned-director told the Red Sea Film event she remains inspired by film from far-flung countries not dominated by social media and clichés. “I’m so interested...

It has been years since humans last forayed into the Grid. But all that is in the past now. As Jared Leto looks set to take over the mantle of the sci-fi world in the upcoming Tron sequel, Tron: Ares, fans of the sci-fi game will be really hyped.

This is probably going to make a lot of you feel very old, but by the time Tron: Ares is released next year, 15 years will have passed since Tron: Legacy took us back to the Grid (which itself was a follow-up to the original 1982 classic).
Can this third chapter, from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales director Joachim Rønning, live up to fan expectations? There's some uncertainty, particularly with Morbius and Suicide Squad star Jared Leto taking on the title role of Ares. However, the fact the Oscar winner is playing a program who leaves the Grid and enters the real world is undeniably intriguing.

Tron is today regarded as a cult classic, having been one of the most well-liked science fiction movies of its time when it debuted in 1982. Despite receiving mixed reviews for its 2010 sequel, Tron: Legacy, Disney decided to go ahead and make another sequel. Tron: Ares will be the following film in the series and will be a stand-alone follow-up to the first two films.
We know that the movie will be led by Jared Leto, as well as that franchise veteran Jeff Bridges will also be coming back to the movie. On top of that, we have a lot of the casting information, as well as a trailer; this is all we have already reported on.
In light of that, director Joachim Rønning shared some updates on the movie, explaining that the film’s tone will change when compared to the previous films, and he also confirmed some exciting news about the music.

Tron: Ares director Joachim Rønning recently commemorated the wrapping of filming earlier this summer with some behind-the-scenes images and stating, “That’s a wrap on Tron: Ares. Also, a big thank you to our wonderful cast for leaving everything on screen. I can’t wait to show the world what we’ve done.” It was also revealed that Nine Inch Nails is scoring the film in place of the last film’s composers, Daft Punk.

A new image has been released from Tron: Ares, showing Jared Leto's character standing before a very new take on the franchise's iconic lightcycle. Directed by Joachim Rnning, the upcoming third installment in the Tron franchise takes place after Tron: Legacy (2010), which was itself a sequel to the 1982 original. Tron: Ares' story features Ares (Leto), a program, leaving the Grid and embarking on a dangerous mission in the real world, with Jeff Bridges reprising his role as Kevin Flynn.
Empire now releases a new image from Tron: Ares, showing Leto's Ares standing in front of an evolved take on the lightcycle. This lightcycle doesn't look like a motorcycle and instead looks like it could actually be a four-wheeled vehicle. The background suggests Ares' vehicle is parked in some kind of factory-like setting. Check out the new image below:

The background suggests Ares' vehicle is parked in some kind of factory-like setting. Check out the new image below:

It’s been a good while since Tron fans last plugged into the Grid. When Tron: Ares hits cinemas next year, it’ll mark 15 years since Tron: Legacy revived the 1982 digital-game sci-fi story for a new generation. And this time, it’s about to reinvent Tron all over again – less a direct sequel to the previous films than the start of something new, imbued with the bio-digital jazz of all that came before. That includes a fresh protagonist in Jared Leto’s Ares – a program who makes the leap from the Grid to the real world – and a new soundscape courtesy of Nine Inch Nails, taking their cues from Daft Punk’s Legacy soundtrack.
As director Joachim Rønning tells Empire, the shift from Daft Punk to Nine Inch Nails is indicative of where Ares is taking us. “With Nine Inch Nails making the music, this instalment will be a little grittier,...

The 2022 action drama sequel Top Gun: Maverick is one of the highest-grossing and most universally-acclaimed action movies of all time, and it could have looked very different if the original plan for the movie's direction had actually come to pass. After many years in development, the director's chair for Maverick was eventually filled by Joseph Kosinski, who previously was most widely recognized for his work with CGI-heavy movies like Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, and Only the Brave. Kosinski obviously did an incredible job blending CGI and real-world stunt direction, resulting in the outstanding action sequences of Maverick.
While Kosinski was chosen to direct in 2017, five years before the film's release, a Top Gun sequel was in development as far back as 2010. Prior to Kosinski's selection, however, the movie was originally offered to producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott, the duo responsible for the oft-quoted Top Gun. Scott unfortunately died in 2012, which forced Bruckheimer and co.

Walt Disney Studios debuted another trailer for Tron: Ares at D23 yesterday afternoon, and while it's yet to leak online in its entirety, we do have a brief glimpse at what's to come in the latest instalment in the groundbreaking sci-fi franchise (via SFFGazette.com).
The movie is a follow-up to Disney's 1982 seminal science fiction film Tron and its 2010 sequel, Tron: Legacy.
Many have questioned how wise it is to give Leto a lead role in a big budget movie after the critical and commercial response to Morbius. However, these few seconds of footage single him out as the lead and put the focus solely on the Oscar-winner as his character heads into The Grid.
"One of the highlights was working with Jeff Bridges. Oh god, he’s just the best," Leto previously said of his role in Tron: Ares. "I had one take where I had to literally say cut,...

Tron: Ares is the highly-anticipated third chapter in the Tron franchise, which kicked off in 1982 and continued with the 2010 sequel Tron: Legacy. Revolving around a virtual reality simply known as "the Grid," the franchise has dabbled in interaction with both morally good and corrupt computer programs. While the first Tron was praised for its groundbreaking visuals, Tron: Legacy also walked in its footsteps with its stunning light cycle battles, an iconic score by Daft Punk, and Oscar-nominated sound editing.
The production delay for a third Tron movie seems justified given how the first two movies shared a 28-year-long gap. The original wasn't a big enough hit for Disney to make an immediate sequel, yet after Tron gained a cult following, the studio decided to flesh out the franchise. Tron: Ares has also received many setbacks, including Disney scrapping the idea for another sequel completely in 2015 and original director Garth Davis being replaced by Joachim Rnning.

Jared Leto's upcoming Tron sequel, Tron: Ares, will have to solve one major problem to live up to the previous two films. The upcoming movie Tron: Ares will be the first return to the digital world of Tron since 2010's Tron: Legacy. There are already some very promising details about the upcoming threequel, such as the Tron: Ares footage description from D23, and they make it seem like a worthwhile return to the digital world. As promising as Ares sounds, however, it will have one major issue to resolve to become a true success.
There are already a few problems that Tron: Ares faces. The last Tron movie, Legacy, was far from a smash-hit. It had relatively low box office earnings - it made $400 million (via Box Office Mojo) against a budget of $170 million, which was barely enough to turn a profit - it didn't do well with critics,...

It's hard to imagine a film franchise more suited to video games than Tron, and it might finally be getting a new game that can do the concept justice. There's been no shortage of tie-ins over the years, with some neat entries like Tron 2.0, but the modern era hasn't seen anything quite as impressive. Although Tron: Identity, developed by Bithell Games, featured a strong, choice-based narrative, the visual novel format doesn't necessarily deliver on what everyone would want from a Tron experience.
Bithell Games is revisiting Tron with Disney Tron: Catalyst, and the official reveal trailer showcases some stylish gameplay that might win over fans itching to return to the Grid. Set to release in 2025 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and NIntendo Switch, the new isometric game puts an emphasis on the story once more, but it mixes that with fluid combat, city exploration, and Light Cycle action.

It has been 14 years since Tron: Legacy hit theaters. And while we might need a refresher ahead of next year’s Tron: Ares, we should all remember at least one thing: the de-aging effects were suspect at best. Now, de-aging was still relatively new when Tron: Legacy came out in 2010 – and its usage does have some supporters – but Jeff Bridges still looks so phony…and he knows it!
Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via THR), Jeff Bridges recalled the de-aging of Tron: Legacy as nothing short of a disaster. “It’s the new thing…I got scanned and in the computer for when we did Tron 2 — What was it called? — Legacy. I wasn’t particularly fond of that recreation of myself. I thought I looked more like Bill Maher than myself.” And yes, he means that as an insult.

While the recent actor and writer strikes made limiting the use of artificial intelligence central to their bargaining platforms, Jeff Bridges may have come up with the definitive argument against A.I.
On a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz pointed out that “there’s probably no one more scanned in the metaverse than Jeff Bridges. Your face, your body.”
“Maybe so!” Bridges agreed in a humorously ominous voice.
“Someone has that,” said Horowitz. “Does that scare you a little bit? That like 150 years from now they can recreate you?”
That is just the new reality, Bridges acknowledged. When he books an acting gig going forward, producers will be leasing his image. But that doesn’t mean he’s always happy with the results. Speaking on a recent episode of Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, The Old Man actor delved into past projects like Iron Man and The Big Lebowski. As the conversation turned to the 1982 cyberpunk sci-fi pic and modern-day discussions of the role of artificial intelligence in film, Bridges said the Joseph Kosinski sequel featured a still “new” de-aging process via computer scanning — one he didn’t necessarily like.

In a recent podcast interview, actor Jeff Bridges shared his thoughts on the groundbreaking visual effects used in the “Tron” films. Bridges, who played Kevin Flynn in both 1982’s “Tron” and 2010’s “Tron: Legacy,” discussed his experience being digitally de-aged to portray a younger version of his character, Clu.
While acknowledging the pioneering nature of the technology, Bridges said he was less than thrilled with how his digital double looked. He told podcast host Josh Horowitz that Clu resembled comedian Bill Maher more than himself. Visual effects artists spent two years meticulously recreating Bridges’ appearance from 1984’s “Against All Odds.” They used body doubles during filming and digitally replaced the head in post-production.
Despite reservations about his digital likeness, Bridges recognized the ambitious efforts to create Clu. “Tron: Legacy” received praise for its special effects upon release in 2010. Directors pushed boundaries by utilizing techniques also seen in James Cameron’s 2009 film “Avatar.

Ahead of his return to the Grid in the next installment, Jeff Bridges has some candid thoughts on the deaging CGI from Tron: Legacy. The actor reprised both his roles of programmer Kevin Flynn and program Clu for the 2010 sequel to the 1982 sci-fi adventure, as an older Flynn is trapped within the Grid by a now tyrannical Clu, who asserts his dominance over the virtual realm. Directed by Top Gun: Maverick's Joseph Kosinski, Tron: Legacy also starred Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, and Michael Sheen, and though not a critical hit, has amassed a cult following in the years since.

In a recent interview, the legendary actor reflected on his experiences in the Tron franchise so far. Jared Leto’s Method acting ways on everything from Suicide Squad to Morbius have generated so much attention that when Jeff Bridges reported for work on Tron: Ares, he didn’t quite know what to expect.
“I hadn’t met him before. I’m saying, ‘What’s it gonna be like?’ because he was also a producer of the show, big fan of the original, working on it for 10 years. I came in, and you know how each set has a different vibe?” Bridges asked Rob Lowe during an appearance on his podcast series, SiriusXM’s Literally! With Rob Lowe. “There was an interesting vibe on this. I said, ‘How’s Jared? How’s he working?’ ‘He’s all right. You know, we call him Ares, you know, so he goes by his name,’ and I said, ‘Oh, that’s interesting.'”

Tulsa King, the hit Paramount+ series from creators Taylor Sheridan and Terence Winter, is back for its second season. Sylvester Stallone stars as Dwight Manfredi, a New York City mafia boss who gets "rewarded" for serving a 25-year prison sentence by being put out to pasture in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Not ready to retire and feeling slighted by his crime family, Dwight ultimately decides to form a new empire and make a new crime family to call his own.
One of Manfredi's most trusted lieutenants is Mitch Keller, the owner of a local bar that becomes the de facto headquarters for Dwight's budding operation. Mitch is played by Garrett Hedlund, the earthy hunk best known for roles in hit movies like Friday Night Lights, Tron: Legacy, and Triple Frontier. He brings a sense of authentic, home-grown Americana to the series, with his character, an ex-con and former rodeo star, reinforcing...

There's a current Hollywood trend that is wholly disturbing. Many major studios -- but primarily Disney -- have been spending millions of dollars and hiring hundreds of effects technicians, animators, and designers to digitally resurrect dead actors to include in their franchise movies. The film "Alien: Romulus" did this recently, while the movies "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" and "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" hired actors Guy Henry and Bob Gunton to portray characters previously played by the late Peter Cushing and Harold Ramis before digitally altering them to resemble their predecessors. While Cushing's estate and Ramis' family signed off on this, it's still different from a living actor giving their consent to be digitally altered, like Jeff Bridges did for "Tron: Legacy."
The first example of digital grave robbing likely came in 2004 with the release of Kerry Conran's "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow," which featured a digital performance...

As is the story with countless others, Mad Max: Fury Road got me hooked on the Mad Max series. For years, Mel Gibson played the lead role of Max in director George Miller's post-apocalyptic saga. Gibson originated the role of Max Rockatansky back in 1979, and reprised it in 1981's Mad Max 2 (Aka The Road Warrior) and then again in 1985's Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. By the time Mad Max: Fury Road rolled around in 2015, Gibson was already 69 years old and thus had aged out of playing the action lead.
While it was hard for many to imagine a Mad Max movie without Mel Gibson, George Miller made an outstanding choice in casting Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky. Bringing his antagonist Bane-like energy to a protagonist role, Hardy is great in Mad Max: Fury Road. I would love to see Hardy return to the Mad Max series for any future iterations,...
