THE ANTIOCH ADVENTURE Part One (1967) directed, written, and produced by Marc Stone, Antioch '67 (he went on to NYC Film School and was a classmate of Martin Scorcese there...but sadly Marc died young, and never became a big timer like Scorcese!), starring Jessica Lipnack '72 and John Draper '72, also Wendy Peterson '72 playing "Thelma" with a supporting cast of several hundred 1967 Antioch College Ohio undergrads, the then Antioch President, Dr. James P. Dixon '39, and at least 20 different faculty and staff members from the school.
This was an epic film, astonishing in its scope and technical expertise.
Much of it depended on the use of then famous rock music pieces which became enduring classics (Marc Stone had "perfect taste" in music he used)....Stone anticipated the later successful use of rock music classics used in 1972 by George Lucas in American GRAFFITI......permissions could back then still be gotten for free (just for plugging songs not any more sold much) or very cheap.
The re-opening of Antioch College Ohio was made possible importantly by that movie, which was duplicated free and mailed to about 50 Antioch Alumni Clubs all over the USA who supported the re-opening after the sad 2008 close down of Antioch College Ohio. The movie gave interest and unity to meetings where money was raised and help was volunteered to keep Antioc open.
I believe it can be seen entirely on the Internet for free...I'm not certain...I have only dial up computer service, and can't get videos or movies on UTube, etc. on my cheap WalMart 2005 computer...but I hear much of that movie is on the Internet...maybe all of it.
The movie is emphatically NOT based on "Campus Tramp" (1959) by Andrew Shaw (nom de plume for Lawrence Block, Antioch '60 who became a famous mystery fiction writer of fame, and who re-released CAMPUS TRAMP under his own name last year...soft core porn book about a trollop girl at an Antioch type school).
The "Campus Tramp" reference was just a joke at the start of the movie and in the credits...EVERYBODY at Antioch in 1967 knew of Lawrence Block's (Andrew Shaw's) CAMPUS TRAMP sleezebag book of fame, and giggled about it...Stone was pandering to that...inside joke!
The movie actually was a very good documentary portrait of Antioch College Ohio student life and the campus and program there in the 1960's. THEN, Antioch was a VERY big deal school....popular, famous, respected...considered (rightly) one of America's best undergrad colleges.
Story traces "Mary Lou Meriwhether" (girl lead) and "Durwood Raintree Jr." (boy lead) from Freshman startup days at Antioch thru to a camped up "graduation day" where the kids wear mortarboard hats like at Oxford U.....and rode motorcycles while wearing academic robes! Joke, joke, joke....the whole movie was peppered with jokes by the carload...mostly very funny, esp. for people from Antioch who knew how true the jokes really were!
Beautiful, seductive Wendy Peterson '72 (wearing a 1967 style bikini type two piece lingerie garment in black) plays "Thelma," the dream-girl "Durwood" (John Draper) romances briefly due to her incredible beauty, and known talents .....she is a resident of "Bingle Hall" top-floor subsection of the North Hall Building, still an all-girls' dorm at Antioch College Ohio back in 1967 in the days before dorms at Antioch all "went co-ed" (unthinkable in the days before that happened....."the times they are a'changing").
Richard Basch '68, Director Of Photography, was and is a true cinematic genius, and Marc Stone owes everything to Basch for work he did. Basch went on to a big career in still photography, college movie history teaching, and real estate sales in Arizona and Mexico! Also did magazine (travel) writing work....still does!
The Antioch Adventure Part One (1967) shows Antioch College Ohio at the height of it's success, glory and fame as a 1960's era counterculture icon....beneath the surface of sophomoric jokes, situations, etc. is wonderful photography and depiction of how Antioch was set up and worked back then....it had big money, big prestige, was successful in every way....
Later, things got bad and it fell on it's face. But....the glory days were captured by Basch's photography and Stone's script and direction and production...lived on and helped save the school....now coming back to life as I write this (Feb. 2012) big time!

This movie had a sequel titled.... Antioch Adventure Part Two (1988)
It was largely based on the Part One movie, similar in structure and story.
Original 1967 stars (then teen age entry students both in 1966-67) BOTH re-appeared in the 1988 playing parents of the undergrad students (Steve Oliver and the girl lead) who starred in Part Two.
This movie ALSO showed "life at Antioch and what it looked like" during the time it was made, shows Antioch as an exciting, interesting place...different in ways than in 1967, but the same also in other important ways.
It showed things unthinkable in 1967 (frontal nudity), computer use by students (everybody in 1967 used pencils, pens, paper and mechanical typewriters...nothing else!), interracial romance (the lead guy was Black, the lead girl was white....Italian-American), and sexual references and images far more advanced and telling than the conservative by contrast 1967 movie.
Fatouros was a better filmmaker than Stone, and the PART TWO movie is the best of the two artistically...in my view.
Stone '67 was mostly a promoter, Fatouros was mostly an artist, it appears to me. Both movies were good, but for different reason.
