Considered the pinnacle of acting talent, Meryl Streep has been commanding both the big and small screen for almost 50 years, which has led to an unsurprisingly high net worth in 2024. Streep rose to prominence in the 1970s, taking home her first Oscar for Kramer vs. Kramer early in her career. She has also won Oscars for her work in Sophie's Choice and The Iron Lady, and Streep has been nominated a record 21 times. In addition to her illustrious film career, Streep has seen success on television, winning acclaim for Big Little Lies and Only Murders in the Building.
Streep was born in Summit, New Jersey to parents Mary and Harry, and she has two younger brothers. In her own personal life, Streep was in a relationship with acclaimed actor John Cazale from 1976-1978, until his untimely passing. Later in 1978, she married sculptor Don Gummer, and together they have three daughters — actresses Mamie,...

Steven Soderbergh directs a supernatural thriller with a unique perspective twist. Here’s the first trailer for Presence, starring Lucy Liu and Julia Fox:
Director Steven Soderbergh has been on a roll recently, having released at least one film a year since 2017 and sometimes two. These have included Logan Lucky, Unsane, High Flying Bird, The Laundromat, Let Them All Talk, No Sudden Move, Kimi and Magic Mike’s Last Dance.
His latest film, Presence, has a unique twist to it: the story’s shot from the perspective of a supernatural entity that stalks an ordinary suburban family. After debuting at Sundance early this year, the movie was picked up for distribution by Neon – the company that recently enjoyed a huge hit with serial killer horror, Longlegs.
According to Deadline, The synopsis reads as follows:
A family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they’re not alone, but rather surrounded by a mysterious entity.

Director and cinematographer Steven Soderbergh doesn’t care about the camera. He cares more about the story. And indeed, he shot another successful feature (Presence) on a prosumer camera (Sony a9 III).
Sony Alpha 9 III Soderbergh: Unconventional director and cinematographer
Director and cinematographer Steven Soderbergh loves to be the first to try new cameras even on high-end feature film productions. His early films were primarily filmed on Super 8 and 16 mm film formats. In the middle of his career, he was not afraid to utilize new cameras even in their production phase. For instance, Contagion (2011) which is one of the most-watched movies in the Covid era, was shot on the Red One Mx. Before that, Soderbergh filmed all of The Girlfriend Experience (2009) on a Red One camera, which has retailed for $4000 for that time. Furthermore, Soderbergh filmed the entirety of Unsane (2018) on an iPhone 7 Plus with its 4K digital camera using the app FiLMiC Pro.

Remember around a decade ago when Steven Soderberg told us he was retired from directing? The Sex, Lies And Videotape filmmaker was clearly in a pretty disillusioned state with the moviemaking business, but he’d eventually reverse that decision and we’re all the luckier for it.

Let Them All Talk, directed by Steven Soderbergh, received mixed reviews due to its experimental nature and improvised dialogue. Critics praised the strong, believable performances by the cast, especially Candice Bergen's memorable and unapologetic portrayal. Some critics found the lack of a central script and meandering storyline to be detrimental, resulting in a dull and aimless cinematic experience for certain viewers.
When the Meryl Streep movie, Let Them All Talk, was released in 2020, it was met with both positive and negative reception. Let Them All Talk is a comedy-drama film directed by legendary filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, best known for films like Contagion and the quotable Magic Mike trilogy. The movie is about a Pulitzer Prize-winning author named Alice Hughes (Meryl Streep) who goes on a cruise ship vacation with her nephew Tyler (Lucas Hedges) to have fun while also attempting to reconnect with her old friends Roberta (Candice Bergen...

Steven Soderbergh, the Oscar-winning director behind Erin Brockovich, Traffic, and the Ocean’s trilogy, says artificial intelligence is a “serious issue.” But the availability of streaming data — or lack thereof — has him more concerned. “Data transparency is the one that keeps me up at night,” the director told Defector in a new interview. For example, Soderbergh said that he never saw data while working with Max, which released his films Let Them All Talk and Kimi, his reality competition Finding Magic Mike, and his new limited series Full Circle. “I was given adjectives,” he said. “‘We feel good about these numbers.’ ‘The comps are right in line with what we were hoping for.’” Claudette Barius/Warner Bros./Courtesy: Everett Collection The filmmaker has two theories about why streaming platforms withhold the numbers. “One is that they’re all making a lot more money than anybody knows and that they’re willing to tell us,...

Since his “retirement” from filmmaking in 2013, director Steven Soderbergh has never fully backed away from the world of features: He has eight movies to his name in the past decade — more than some of his peers have produced in their entire careers. But Soderbergh did subsequently branch out into the world of TV, a medium he’s approached with the same enterprising, experimental spirit as he does his latter-period films. First came 2014’s “The Knick,” the Cinemax period medical drama helmed entirely by Soderbergh at a time when marquee directors were just starting to dabble in TV; then “Mosaic,” a project released in 2017 as both an interactive app and an HBO series, showing the same interest in new technology that’s led Soderbergh to shoot multiple movies on an iPhone.
“Mosaic” was a collaboration with screenwriter Ed Solomon, who also penned Soderbergh’s 1950s noir “No Sudden Move.” The new...

At a time when overall deals are getting the side-eye, no disapproving stares need be sent toward Steven Soderbergh. The Oscar- and Emmy-winning director signed a three-year deal with WarnerMedia in 2020, when Max was still HBO Max and HBO still had exclusive rights to its original library, and he’s continue to deliver throughout the streamer’s tumultuous transition — one film per year, including the third in his trilogy with Channing Tatum (“Magic Mike’s Last Dance”), a buzzy thriller starring Zoë Kravitz (“Kimi”), and a little movie featuring the one-and-only Meryl Streep (“Let Them All Talk”).
For an artist who once thought he was done with filmmaking for good, Soderbergh has become the portrait of reliability. People can quibble over quality — none of his films have garnered the awards attention seen in his early career or the critical adoration of, say, HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra” — but he’s produced thoughtful stories,...

After years of tech-driven disruption (remember when a phone company briefly owned Warner Bros.?), David Zaslav has been trying to strike a back-to-basics, business-as-usual tone with anyone who will listen: Wall Street analysts, Hollywood creatives and most recently the crowd of theater owners gathered in Las Vegas at CinemaCon this week.
The Warner Bros. Discovery chief has strongly rejected the streaming-first strategy of his predecessor, Jason Kilar, the Hulu cofounder who advanced day-and-date or HBO Max-only releases for Warner Bros. movies. At CinemaCon, Zaslav promised long theatrical runs for Warner’s slate of new movies like “Barbie” and “The Flash.”
Movies seemed like something of an afterthought at the unveiling of Max, the replacement for HBO Max, this month. “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” which faltered at the box office, will have its streaming debut as Max begins service on May 23. There was no mention of streaming-only movies.

Wyoming is headed to West End. Brokeback Mountain — Annie Proulx’s short story made popular by the 2005 film — is getting a stage adaptation set to premiere in London, starring Lucas Hedges and Mike Faist as closeted cowboys Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist. It marks both actors’ West End debuts.
Variety reports that the West End adaptation of Brokeback Mountain is slated to premiere at the venue @sohoplace, and will play from May 10th through August 12th, 2023. Although there’s no Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger in this go around, Proulx said in a statement that the “script is fresh and deeply moving, opening sight lines not visible in the original nor successive treatments,” which seems like a promising co-sign.

You’re never quite sure what Steven Soderbergh is going to do next. And that mercurial sensibility is part of his charm. The man who burst onto the scene at the age of 26 with his erotic thriller Sex, Lies, and Videotape has played in so many sandboxes, from crime comedies (Out of Sight, the Ocean’s trilogy) and drug-trade epics (Traffic) to sports dramas (High Flying Bird) and breezy Meryl Streep vehicles (Let Them All Talk). He’s directed 13 feature films and created two TV series in the last 12 years alone.

The fallout from the surprise shelving of DC’s “Batgirl” continues, as at least six different movies billed as Max Original films have been quietly removed from HBO Max in recent days.
Some eagle-eyed Reddit viewers were first to notice the absence of the titles, all of which were exclusively released for streaming and skipped theaters. Those movies include the Anne Hathaway films “The Witches” and “Locked Down,” the Melissa McCarthy comedy “Superintelligence,” the Seth Rogen comedy “An American Pickle,” the Dylan Sprouse sci-fi romance “Moonshot” and the Sundance drama “Charm City Kings.”
Additionally, a remake of “House Party” from LeBron James’ Springhill Entertainment that was originally meant to debut on HBO Max on July 28 did not launch and was scrubbed from the release calendar.
Reps for HBO Max did not respond to a request for comment.

Warner Bros. Discovery has been quietly culling content from HBO Max — including several Warner Bros. movies that were exclusively streaming on the service — in what appears to be an effort to cut costs.
Within the past few weeks, at least six Warner Bros. movies have been removed from HBO Max: “Moonshot,” a sci-fi rom-com starring Lana Condor and Cole Sprouse; artificial-intelligence dystopia comedy “Superintelligence,” starring Melissa McCarthy; Robert Zemeckis’ 2020 remake of “The Witches,” starring Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci and Chris Rock; comedy “An American Pickle,” starring Seth Rogen as an immigrant who wakes up after being pickled for 100 years; Doug Liman heist pic “Locked Down” with Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor; and drama “Charm City Kings” from director Angel Manuel Soto.

Exclusive: Deadline has the first pair of exclusive tracks from Thomas Newman’s score for Operation Mincemeat, which is set for digital release via Lakeshore Records tomorrow, as Warner Bros. releases the film in the UK and Ireland.
Operation Mincemeat tells the extraordinary story of two intelligence officers that changed the course of World War II, saving tens of thousands of lives and breaking Hitler’s deadly grip on Europe by recruiting the skills of the most unlikely of secret agents: a dead man.
For the drama, Newman looked to craft a striking orchestral score, which evoked intensely dramatic action, while befitting more nuanced moments. The film was directed by John Madden, with whom Newman had previously collaborated on titles including The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and The Debt. “John Madden is the perfect collaborator. Whip-smart, full of humor and a savvy listener,” says the composer.

One of the best things about As They Made Us, written and directed by Mayim Bialik, is its pronounced lack of judgment. An indie dramedy heavy on the drama, Bialik’s story of a fractured family preparing for its patriarch’s death fully understands that every person has their reasons. Which doesn’t make all of their actions okay or the aftermath any more bearable. It’s the truth, no more and no less.

Scammer season continues! Watch as she cons her way into glittery parties, sweet-talks some of the most powerful financiers in the city into investing in her cockamamie schemes and burns every bridge she walks across (in her designer heels). February is the shortest month of the year but that doesn’t mean it has to be any less filled with enticing film and TV options than any other month. That’s certainly true of this February, which begins and ends with a pair of ripped-from-the-headlines miniseries, beginning with the inside story of an infamous sex tape and ending with a boardroom drama from the ride share world.

Since coming out of his "retirement" from making films in 2017, Steven Soderbergh has directed a half dozen movies and a TV series. He's also been quick to adapt to the rapidly changing landscape and sent his last four films direct to streaming — starting with "High Flying Bird" and "The Laundromat" (which debuted as Netflix Originals) and continuing on with "Let Them All Talk" and "No Sudden Move" (which bowed as HBO Max exclusives). His latest directorial effort, "Kimi," is also premiering on HBO Max and has received a trailer just a month ahead of its debut on the platform.

Steven Soderbergh movies practically come faster than they’re made, but so long as the recent standard of quality from his HBO Max work—and how Let Them All Talk and No Sudden Move couldn’t seem less like work by the same man—we’re good with the pace. Swimming with anticipation, even. In just under one month we’ll see Kimi, his David Koepp-scripted thriller about an agoraphobe (Zoë Kravitz) who, suspecting signs of violent crime in a data stream, ventures into the world amidst Covid and civil unrest.
Digital-age Blow-up? Well, maybe. But the first preview is much more Peter Andrews than Antonioni, and to these eyes it looks gorgeous. This’ll make prime end-of-week unwinding when it hits HBO Max on February 10.

Along with “Batgirl,” it had originally been developed as an HBO Max project.

Steven Soderbergh and Ed Solomon have landed a series order at HBO Max for the drama “Full Circle,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The series reunites the pair after they worked together on the film “No Sudden Move,” which was released on HBO Max in July. Casey Silver, who was a producer on “No Sudden Move,” will be an executive producer on the series. Soderbergh and Solomon also previously worked together on the HBO series “Mosaic.”
“Even by Ed’s standards this is a complex narrative that manages to be both kaleidoscopic and intimate,” Soderbergh said. “Our task now is to assemble a great cast and make sure we execute at the level the scripts deserve.”

While his new film No Sudden Move features a predominantly male cast, his two previous films Let Them All Talk and The Laundromat revolved around powerful female leads played by Meryl Streep, often regarded the greatest actress of all time.

Aside from a great performance by a terrific actor, several factors go into a strong character. In Soderbergh's case, he's explored complex, multifaceted characters who work both sides of the law, including assassins, rebel guerillas, high-class escorts, Interpol and FBI agents, political activists, and many more.

Changes in Oscar’s music rules, as announced today, will make a lot of film composers happy.
The major change is that an original score no longer needs to consist of at least 60% of the total music in the film. That number has been substantially lowered, to 35%, potentially increasing the number of eligible scores each year.
This has been an issue in recent years, as filmmakers have increasingly relied on pre-existing, licensed music as well as music specifically composed for their movies.
Last year, for example, Thomas Newman’s “Let Them All Talk” and Howard Shore’s “Pieces of a Woman” were among the high-profile film scores disqualified as failing to meet the 60% threshold. Terence Blanchard’s music for “One Night in Miami” and the Mark Isham-Craig Harris “Judas and the Black Messiah” score were not even entered, probably because both were deemed likely to be disqualified due to brevity.

Meryl Streep told Entertainment Weekly during an oral history for “The Devil Wears Prada” that playing fashion magazine icon Miranda Priestly was the last time she attempted Method acting. Streep was an icy presence on set during the entirety of principal photography on “The Devil Wears Prada,” so much so that she removed herself from all group activity when the cameras weren’t rolling.
“It was horrible! I was [miserable] in my trailer,” Streep said about the experience. “I could hear them all rocking and laughing. I was so depressed! I said, ‘Well, it’s the price you pay for being boss!’ That’s the last time I ever attempted a Method thing.”
Anne Hathaway said Streep never made her feel “intimidated” despite the Method acting, adding, “I always felt cared for. I knew that whatever she was doing to create that fear, I appreciated [because] I also knew she was watching out for me.

"The problem is, you're not smart enough to know how not smart you are..." WB + HBO Max have debuted the full-length official trailer for No Sudden Move, the latest Steven Soderbergh film following Let Them All Talk earlier this year. The film is premiering at the upcoming 2021 Tribeca Film Festival before opening (both in theaters + on HBO Max) at the start of July. A group of criminals brought together under mysterious circumstances must quickly figure out how work together to uncover what's really going on when the simple job goes completely sideways. The fantastic Soderbergh ensemble cast features Don Cheadle, Benicio del Toro, David Harbour, with Ray Liotta, Jon Hamm, Amy Seimetz, Brendan Fraser, Kieran Culkin, Noah Jupe, Craig "muMs" Grant, Julia Fox, Frankie Shaw, and Bill Duke. This looks like good ol' vintage crime fun! Might be one of Soderbergh's best in years. I prefer the title cards and vibe of the teaser,...
