Noboru Iguchi is a director and screenwriter. He was born in 1969 and he began his career in the 1990s as a director of porno films. His “Kurushime-san” of 1997, which combined horror and black comedy, revealed his interest in extreme genre cinema. The titles of his next films confirmed this passion – his filmography contains “A Larva to Love”, “Cat-Eyed Boy”, the famous “The Machine Girl” about a girl with an arm replaced with a machine gun, “Zombie Ass” and “Karate-Robo Zaborgar”. Starting with “Flowers of Evil” his filmography started taking a more “serious” turn, although the extremity never abandoned a filmmaker that now counts more than 70 titles as a director.
On the occasion of the release of his two latest films, “Tales of Bliss and Heresy” and “Idol Never Dies”, we speak with him about his personal trauma, the messages he wanted to convey, idols, Bataille, and many other topics.

"What if I choose death instead?!" "You're not ready to die, so fight for your life." Rlje Films has released an official trailer for a crazy body horror punk rock film called Spare Parts, now set for release in June this summer. Made by Canadian filmmaker Andrew T. Hunt, the film follows an all-girl punk band named Ms. 45 - they get kidnapped after a show in the wrong part of town. They wake up to find that they’ve had their limbs replaced with crude mechanized weapons, and their only chance for survival is to fight in a dirty arena for the amusement of a blood-hungry cult. The film stars Michelle Argyris, Emily Alatalo, Jason Rouse, Kiriana Stanton, Chelsea Muirhead, Ryan Allen, and Julian Richings. It's described as "if Sushi Typhoon's Machine Girl gets a make-over with the staging props of Mad Max." We featured the teaser trailer for this last year,...

Back in 2007, our site got one of its highest traffic spikes when we hosted the outrageous trailer for Iguchi Noboru's The Machine Girl. For many people, it was their first exposure to Japan's bloody splattergore genre. And when the film itself arrived, it fulfilled that trailer's promise of rude comedy, ridiculous action, and gallons of fake blood. This year, we're getting a new Machine Girl film, a reboot of sorts called Rise of the Machine Girls. It's directed by Kobayashi Yûki, and is slated for release in Japan on November 22nd. Screenings can already be caught at film festivals though, and the Netherlands-based Camera Japan Festival is one of them. I attended a midnight screening with friends and was... ... was ...well, entertained. But...

Twelve years ago, a small film called Meatball Machine by directors Yamaguchi Yudai and Yamamoto Yun'ichi made a bloody splash in the festival circuit. In it, you could see two star-crossed loners falling in love with each other, only for both to be infeested by alien parasites who use their human hosts as walking weapon platforms, the better to battle each other with. Eyes were gouged, limbs replaced with guns and knives, and gallons of blood geysered out of orifices old and new. Together with Iguchi Noboru's The Machine Girl and Nishimura Yoshihiro's Tokyo Gore Police (both released a couple of years later), it started a veritable wave of Japanese "splattergore" films, in which all rules with regards to taste, story or biological realism were...

Criterion adds Jellyfish Eyes to its collection, the directorial debut of prolific Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. Known for his multi-faceted platforms of painting, sculpture, and a continual blending of media meant to push the boundaries of what defines notions of art, his 2013 debut is a psychedelic children’s adventure conveying significant messages as concerns social media, the environment, and human interaction. Having had his work featured at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles during a 2007-2009 retrospective, it’s perhaps no surprise Murakami premiered his film at Lacma (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) in 2013, before it spread to other venues and ultimately a limited theatrical release in the Us in July, 2015. Named by Time magazine in 2008 as one of the one hundred most influential people (the only visual artist to make this particular round) perhaps explains the high expectations and underwhelming critical response to his first cinematic effort.

Now available on Blu-ray from Scream Factory is the revenge thriller, Gun Woman, and we've been provided with three copies to give away to Daily Dead readers.
"A brilliant doctor vows revenge on a crazy sadistic killer following the murder of his wife… and devises the perfect assassination plan by turning a young woman into the most lethal assassin the world has ever seen. This outrageous plan will unfold in the killer's heavily fortified underground lair. The lethal assassin will be placed into a temporal state of death and send into the facility as a dead body… but when she wakes, it is everyone else in the compound who will be deprived of their lives.
But there is one catch. What will she use as a weapon? The staff of the underground facility is armed with weapons that have fingerprint authentication systems so it's impossible for her to use their weapons.

As February draws to a close, so does the official Women in Horror Month. Started a few years back, the month of February has been dubbed a special time of year, where horror fans are encouraged reflect on final girls, vixens and villains, and appreciate the evolution of females in the genre. Knowing that, what better time to pay tribute to the unsung heroes of the horror world? Unfortunately, some girls are overlooked either because they aren't the main character, or they just aren't in a movie that became as popular as its predecessors. In my opinion, everyone who helps save lives is warranted some reward. Therefore, I've decided to provide a list of some of my favorite females to spread the word about some contenders that deserve a little more recognition. Without further ado, here are the ten most overlooked horror heroines!

Cult Japanese film director Nboru Iguchi (The Machine Girl, Robo-Geisha, The ABCs of Death) returns with yet another madcap comedy horror, full to the brim with Ott special effects, CGI gore and full-on action sequences. There's also the obligatory token nudity, flying fish, irreverent humour, killer tuna and enough flesh eating Sashimi to make your skin crawl. Everything we love about Nboru Iguchi then. Keiko (Rina Takeda) is a cute and clumsy trainee sushi chef who finds her kung fu skills come in handy when some infected flying sushi start to bite back. Will Keiko be able to save a group of nasty businessmen from the unrelenting terror of the killer fish dishes? Can Iguchi prevent his latest horror comedy from flushing itself down the cinematic toilet to fishy heaven? Will Asami keep her clothes on for once? I really hope this madness never ends. Director: Various. Review: Adam Wing. Stephen R. Covey once said, “Strength lies in differences, not in similarities.” That’s certainly the case with The ABCs of Death, a 2012 American anthology horror film produced by Ant Timpson and Tim League. Their plan was simple, one movie consisting of 26 short films, shot by up and coming directors from 15 countries. Each director was assigned a letter of the alphabet and given free rein in choosing a word to create a story involving death. While the individual chapters were always going to be a little hit and miss, depending on your taste in horror, the quality of filmmakers is undeniable. Marcel Sarmiento (Deadgirl), Noboru Iguchi (The Machine Girl), Yudai Yamaguchi (Tamami), Ti West (The Innkeepers), Banjong Pisanthanakun (Shutter), Adam Wingard (A Horrible Way to Die) and our very own Ben Wheatley (Kill List) lend their skills to a disjointed, occasionally offensive, often engaging and highly recommended movie going experience.

Another Fantastic Fest has come to a close. It's been a grueling week of madness, movies and mayhem...and I can't wait to do it again next year.
As I've written before, the main problem with film fests is you can never see everything you want. But that's okay because you end up being exposed to things you didn't know about — and that's usually a good thing. I missed plenty, but Kayley Viteo and I did see a lot of films at FF2012 and we've reviewed our favorites already (to find them, just plug "Fantastic Fest" into the search box). Saturday night, Fantastic Fest held the U.S. premiere of the anthology film, The ABCs of Death. Like last year's Slacker 2011, this film featured 26 of the best, up-and-coming or already established horror directors showing off their creative ideas about death. The directors include Adam Wingard (You're Next), Ti West (House of the Devil), Noboru Iguchi (The Machine Girl, Robogeisha), Austin native Angela Bettis (May) and Adrián García Bogliano (Cold Sweat, Penumbra).
Before the screening started, Tim League took the stage to apologize about the print we were supposed to see. In the craziness of various festivals it had been invited to, they had neglected to send a print back to the Alamo for this first screening. All was okay, as they had a working copy of the film, although it was missing a few big edits that made it to Tiff. So while this was close to the final film,...

During the FanExpo in Toronto last weekend, the 2012 Toronto After Dark Film Festival announced the first 10 titles of the festival this October and it looks like an exciting lineup.
The festival is moving back from Toronto Underground cinema into the newly restored Bloor Hot Docs for its 7th year (where it resided for its first five years) running from October 18th to 26th, 2012. As usual the first batch of films is an eclectic mix of horror, sci-fi, action and the bizarre. So if you have been a fan of the previous year's lineup then it shouldn't disappoint.
[Rec]³: Genesis
First up is the Canadian Premiere for the third film in the Spanish [Rec] series working as a parallel sequel to the first two films. Paco Plaza returns as the director but the co-director Jaume Balagueró of the first two films will be directing the 4th [Rec] installment next year instead. This time...

Director: Iguchi Noboru, Nishimura Yoshihiro & Sakaguchi Tak. Review: Adam Wing. Japanese splatter-fests are everywhere, and quite frankly, I still can’t get enough of them. They’re cheap to produce, highly effective and just occasionally, lots of fun. Sushi Typhoon – a Japanese production company that specialises in low-budget horror, sci-fi and fantasy – has led the way in recent years, even if its current crop is a mixed bag of ungainliness and goodness. For every Machine Girl there’s a Deadball, which really didn’t do it for me, but Mutant Girls Squad (should it ever get an official UK release) could well swim in a gene pool of its very own. The Machine Girl director Iguchi Noboru, special effects guru Nishimura Yoshihiro (Tokyo Gore Police), and legend in waiting Sakaguchi Tak (Versus) join forces for the first time on Mutant Girls Squad – think X-Men on a much lower budget and...

If you are a regular Twitch reader, the name Noboru Iguchi should be quite familiar to you. As you'd probably know / recall, he is the writer-director who gained international fame with his 2008 film The Machine Girl, and since then has gone on to make films such as RoboGeisha (2009) and Mutant Girls Squad (2010). Last year was a particularly busy year for him, with the release of three films that he directed: Karate-Robo Zaborgar, Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead and the subject of this review - Tomie: Unlimited. If you have seen any of Iguchi's films, you will know the trademark style in all his movies, i.e. over-the-top gore and bloodiness, and Tomie: Unlimited is no exception. Tomie: Unlimited is based...

The delightfully insane Mutant Girls Squad is the latest frenetic experience in the Japanese splatter movement.
It brings together three of the most famous filmmakers in this inexplicable subgenre for the first time. Directors Noboru Iguchi (The Machine Girl), Yoshihiro Nishimura (Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl) and Tak Sakaguchi (Samurai Zombie) have created a very wet, very funny body horror tale that is being touted as a spoof of the X-Men films. While there are a few similarities to that comic book franchise, Mutant Girls Squad is a decidedly different monster.
Rin (Yumi Sugimoto) is a timid teenager who is savagely bullied at school. Upon her 16th birthday, she discovers that she’s the progeny of a half-human, half-mutant union. This would explain why her right hand can morph...

Cracked nutcase of a genius, Japanese director. Noboru Iguchi has brought us some of the best (‘Mutant Girls Squad,’ ‘The Machine Girl,’ to name bit a few) that cult/action/exploitation cinema has to offer and whilst he’s preparing to release his latest opus of insanity Dead Sushi, this October, news has come in for a possible early English subbed source. According to Screedaily, Hong Kong’s Sundream Motion Pictures have nabbed the local right to the Sushi turns killer horror flick. It’s pretty much a cert the film will get picked up for sale in either the U.S and or U.K but always to keep your options open for an early peak. More on a release, when we get it. In the mean time, crank up the trailer, and let Sushi Attack. Dead Sushi trailer...

Horror fans have plenty to look forward to this Fall, thanks to the deeply creepy anthology The ABCs of Death. Taking a page from children's educational books, this collection of terror will offer 26 death-centered stories from 26 of modern horror's rising stars including Ti West (The House of the Devil), Jason Eisener (Hobo with a Shotgun), Noboru Iguchi (The Machine Girl), Srdjan Spasojevic (A Serbian Film), Nacho Vigalondo (Time Crimes), Ben Wheatley (Kill List), and Adam Wingard (V/H/S). Each chapter will offer a new lesson in death inspired by a letter of the alphabet, like "T is for Toilet," which is the contribution of Done in 60 Seconds. With Clay's Lee Hardcastle. This macabre sense of humor is fittingly mirrored in The ABCs of Death's new poster: This poster revealed by Entertainment Weekly was designed by Kaare Andrews, the comic book artist behind The Incredible Hulk and Ultimate X...

Director: Kazushi Nakadaira. Review: Adam Wing. When it comes to movies starring Asami (Gothic & Lolita Psycho, The Machine Girl), should we really be worrying about specifics? Everything we need to know is laid out for us in the opening credits sequence. A young girl pulls herself from an early grave, badly beaten and chained to a wooden cross. She’s tired and weary, delirious and deadly - not to mention pretty much naked. We watch her cross the deserted landscape to the beats of a funky, retro soundtrack, still for all intents and purposes, pretty much naked.
