Fernanda Torres is going in the Golden Globes history books. The I’m Still Here star won the Best Drama Actress Golden Globe on Sunday, becoming the first Brazilian to win the prize.
Torres is only the second Brazilian to be nominated in the category, following her mother Fernanda Montenegro, who was nominated 26 years ago for Central Station; she lost to Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth. Torres dedicated her award to her mother, adding that her win is proof that “art can endure in life.”
The actress is also the fourth performer to win the category for a non-English language performance after Anouk Aimée (A Man and a Woman), Liv Ullman (The Emigrants), and Isabelle Huppert (Elle). I’m Still Here, Brazil’s international feature submission at the Oscars, is in Portuguese.

Kate Winslet Net Worth (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
Kate Winslet is one of the most celebrated actresses of Hollywood and has over the years established a glorious career with her versatile filmography. While she started her acting stint with some commercials and theatre, it was the movie Titanic which catapulted her into the main league. This has also resulted in her astounding bankability.
Kate Winslet’s Journey
She got her first major break with the 1994 film Heavenly Creatures. She was then seen in the film Sense And Sensibility which proved to be a success. However, it was her performance as Rose in the film Titanic opposite Leonardo Dicaprio which was a true game changer for her.
Since then, there was no looking back for the actress. It was followed by a diversified filmography with movies like Enigma, Holy Smoke and Kinky. She was furthermore seen in Iris, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind,...

Between the Temples (Nathan Silver)
In a state of arrested development after his wife unexpectedly died from a freak accident, Ben Gottlieb (Jason Schwartzman) is suicidal, pleading to a truck to just run him over and begging that he be fired from his job as cantor at the local Jewish temple in upstate New York. While this set-up may not scream comedy, Between the Temples is in fact hilarious, packed with endless jokes and adoration for physical gags while we witness Ben find new meaning in life through an unexpected acquaintance. Above all, Nathan Silver’s feature, from a script he co-wrote with C. Mason Wells,is a thrillingly alive, nimble piece of filmmaking: shot on 16mm by Sean Price Williams with...

In the ‘90s, there was no greater romance on the screen than that of Jack and Rose, the Romeo and Juliet of the North Atlantic Ocean. Doomed as they were, their love captured a moment that hasn’t entirely been replicated since. And both Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have remained close ever since first working on 1997’s Titanic, with their latest reunion occurring just this week.
Appearing ahead of a screening of Lee, in which Winslet stars as photojournalist Lee Miller, DiCaprio honored his co-star by saying, “Kate Winslet has dedicated herself to the film and to honoring Lee’s legacy for over the course of nine years. I remember her speaking about this to me personally. This has been a massive passion project for her, and it’s a journey that speaks to the depth of Kate’s passion and her dedication to telling stories that need to be remembered.

Here’s why Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet never got together (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
Let’s be honest—Titanic hit theaters in 1997 and had fans convinced that Leo and Kate were meant to be more than just Jack and Rose. Their chemistry? Off the charts. Hearts were racing, and fans wondered: “Will they? Won’t they?” Well, spoiler alert: they didn’t. And Kate spilled the tea on why, crushing those Jack-and-Rose real-life romance dreams for good.
In an interview back in the day, Kate Winslet didn’t hold back when asked why the duo never got together. The answer? They never “fancied” each other. Even with all that undeniable Titanic spark, Kate and Leo were nothing more than besties. “We were so young,” Kate explained, adding that their strong friendship bond kept everything fun and lighthearted on set.
And what a bond it was. Kate once called Leo...

Kate Winslet represents the third generation of actors in her family. Her grandparents ran a repertory theater in England and her father struggled for many years as an actor himself while working other jobs to support his family. Winslet however found incredible success quite early in her career and by the time she turned 30, she had already received four Oscar nominations and played the female lead in the biggest box office blockbuster Hollywood had ever seen, “Titanic.”
While success in films came easy for Winslet, the one thing that did seem to elude her for a long time was recognition from the Academy. She would have to wait through five Oscar losses before the award would finally come her away for the 2008 movie “The Reader.” She would lampoon her Oscar troubles (and ironically receive an Emmy nomination) on an episode of the Ricky Gervais comedy “Extras.” On that show Winslet...

Greece’s Thessaloniki Film Festival ends this evening with a screening of The End, the latest feature project from the enigmatic filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer.
Best known for his intellectually rich and Oscar-nominated non-fiction works The Act of Killing (2012) and The Look of Silence (2014), Oppenheimer’s latest is his first fiction project, and for it he has recruited one of the most impressive ensembles of the year. Starring are Oscar winner Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton), Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road), BAFTA-nominee George Mackay (1917), and Emmy-nominee Moses Ingram (The Queen’s Gambit).
Styled as a Golden Age Hollywood musical, The End is set in a post-apocalyptic world twenty-five years after environmental collapse left the Earth uninhabitable. A biological family and their companions – part-found-family, part-hired-help – live in harmony in a subterranean bunker. But the arrival of a stranger smashes the synthetic veil of their strictly organized world. The ensuing struggle to maintain their...

The Best Actress Oscar race is looking more and more crowded as we get closer to the 2025 awards season, with numerous significant contenders in the running for those five slots. But if there’s one performance that’s surely going to make it in, it’s Saoirse Ronan in “The Outrun,” directed by Nora Fingscheidt. Why? Here are the Top 5 reasons …
1. Previous Oscar nominee.
At only 30 years old, Ronan has already received four Oscar nominations, and thus an acclaimed dramatic performance in her latest film will put her on the radar for many academy members. Her first nomination arrived in the Best Supporting Actress category for “Atonement” (2007) and then she was nominated in Best Actress for “Brooklyn” (2015), “Lady Bird” (2017), and “Little Women” (2019). Receiving as many Oscar noms as she has in such a short period of time shows that the academy is inclined to consider any new Ronan performance, and...

Kathryn Hahn’s introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe took the form of an intrusive 1950s neighbor to Wanda Maximoff and Vision on WandaVision. At the time, yours truly reminded Hahn that her role as Agnes was reminiscent of Milly Campbell, her previous ‘50s neighbor character in the Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio-led Revolutionary Road (2008). Of course, Agnes turned out to be a cover identity for a powerful witch named Agatha Harkness, and between the overall popularity of WandaVision and the conniving character’s chart-topping single, “Agatha All Along,” Agatha warranted an even deeper dive by way of a spinoff series that’s also titled Agatha All Along.
Created by WandaVision boss Jac Schaeffer, last night’s two-episode series premiere begins with Agatha still stuck in the Scarlet Witch’s (Elizabeth Olsen) all-encompassing spell that she punished Agatha with in WandaVision’s conclusion. But instead of...

Kathy Bates recently announced that she will retire from acting once her new show, Matlock, ends. In 2023, CBS ordered a Matlock reboot with the premise of a female version of Ben Matlock, now renamed Madeline Matlock. Despite being a contemporary re-telling of the iconic Andy Griffith series, it will take a different route than the original show. As the Matlock trailer indicates, however, there is a deeper connection between the original TV show and the reboot.
Matlock will premiere on Sunday, September 22, at 8 p.m. on CBS, but the official time slot will be Thursdays at 9 p.m. on CBS, beginning on October 9.
Matlock features an impressive cast of characters joining Bates in the new CBS series. It will see Madeline Matlock coming out of retirement to return to her legal career, planning on using her age as a secret advantage. The stakes for Matlock are high, considering the success...

This month marks the return of one of the most twisted beloved modern movie characters: Betelgeuse. Of course, we all know the bio-exorcist by his easier-to-spell name, Beetlejuice. After over three decades, Beetlejuice is back with the long-awaited and appropriately named sequel "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice." You already know that most (though not all) of the cast of the original 1988 Tim Burton horror-comedy is back, including Michael Keaton as the Juice himself. One big talking point Keaton has hit on in the pre-release marketing is that, in all the years of development, he pushed hard to ensure that his character was...not in a lot of the movie. It's not just false modesty -- Beetlejuice is only in 17 minutes of the movie bearing his name, but he makes a massive impact all the same. And Keaton's performance as Beetlejuice is just one of many that manages to be memorable and iconic without being overbearing.

Kathryn Hahn has always been more than happy to take on a supporting role. Her comedic career blossomed in the early 2000s with bit parts in Adam McKay films like “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” and “Step Brothers,” and she also garnered dramatic bonafides with Sam Mendes’ “Revolutionary Road” and M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Visit.” Most recently, she’s helped fill out ensembles in live-action projects like “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and animated ones such as “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” As her career has developed in the last decade, so too has her center-stage appeal, with roles in HBO’s “Mrs. Fletcher” and Tamara Jenkins’ “Private Life” placing her in lead position. Now, it seems, Marvel is taking notice as they’ve decided to spin her side character from “WandaVision” off into her own Disney+ show with “Agatha All Along.”

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s performances in the 2008 romantic drama Revolutionary Road are nothing short of mesmerizing. However, among the film’s many powerful scenes, one stands out for its raw emotional intensity, Frank Wheeler’s explosive rant at his wife, April.

While the film in itself is a testament to the formidable talents of its leading actors, the specific scene deserves special recognition, especially considering the real-life relationship between the two actors. Their close bond makes the emotional brutality of the scene even more remarkable, with DiCaprio embodying Frank’s fury and despair.

In recent years Michael Shannon has begun to emerge as one of film’s most versatile and ubiquitous actors. Often cast his villains or law enforcement agents Shannon always brings a brooding intensity to his roles and manages to use that intensity for both good characters and bad that often know a lot more than they are saying.
Shannon first started his career as a stage actor in Chicago. He gained a great deal of notice and other roles from his appearances in the plays of a then little-known actor turned playwright named Tracy Letts. Shannon credits his work in the plays of Letts for the film and television opportunities that came his way after he appeared in two of Lett’s acclaimed plays “Bug” and “Killer Joe.”

Saoirse Ronan is still only 30-years-old, but she’s already a four-time Oscar nominee stretching back all the way to her breakthrough performance in 2007’s “Atonement,” for which she earned her very first bid as a teenager. Almost two decades later, she could finally collect a trophy on her fifth try. She’s one of the top contenders for Best Actress, according to the early predictions of Gold Derby users. But which film will she win for?
At the moment her better bet looks like “Blitz,” director Steve McQueen‘s upcoming film about the German bombing campaign against the UK during World War II. Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio have long been major fan favorites, especially as lovers onscreen. This is because of the outstanding chemistry the duo has successfully displayed all along, resulting in some of the most critically acclaimed masterpieces of all time. However, the pair didn’t exactly say yes to starring opposite each other the entire time.

Well, Winslet for one most certainly didn’t, and ended up turning down one too many roles that asked her to be the onscreen lover of DiCaprio. The same was the case for Inception as well, which is, unarguably, one of DiCaprio’s highest-grossing movies. As it turns out, the actress was asked to play the actor’s lover once again, but her response was a big no.

There are good movies that, in detail, discuss the dynamics of a married couple that have been in a relationship for a long time. It goes into detail about the challenges they face as a long-term couple. The trials and tribulations are what make or break them. Blue Valentine, Revolutionary Road, and Marriage Story are some of the finest examples of how filmmakers can portray the intimacy shared by a couple who are on the verge of breaking up. Actor/Director Tyler Perry’s new directorial venture on Amazon Prime Video, Divorce in the Black, is probably the antithesis of what the above-mentioned movies represent. Released on the streaming platform on July 11, 2024, the movie captures the unstable relationship between Ava and her husband, Dallas.

Actress Kate Winslet is synonymous with the character of Rose from James Cameron’s disaster epic Titanic. The film saw her paired up with Leonardo DiCaprio in the doomed romance set aboard the ‘unsinkable’ Titanic in 1912. The film garnered her a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars and the film was the highest-grossing movie of all time then.
Despite earning billions, Titanic remains one of the many in Winslet’s amazing filmography. Though she is best known for her role in Cameron’s film, she has delivered far superior and mature performances since the big blockbuster. Before his Stranger Things fame, David Harbour did many small and significant character roles in several films and TV series. Chicago – One of Chicago’s icon theater actors … Michael Shannon … is performing again in town, in the company that he co-founded. Red Orchid Theatre presents Michael Shannon and Travis A. Knight in the World Premiere of “Turret” by Levi Holloway, now at the Chopin Theatre through June 9, 2024. For tickets and info, click Turret.
Two men (Shannon and Knight) survive in a facility deep underground somewhere in the wild woods of the Pacific Northwest, hiding away from something terrible from the outside. Ensnared in a relentless loop of endless tomorrows, they discover the wolf isn’t at the door, it’s already inside, waiting in the creeping darkness all around them. “Turret” is an excavation of masculinity, love, loss and isolation, and a claustrophobic carnival of carnage, carrier pigeons, cribbage, whiskey, music, mischief and mayhem.

Luca Guadagnino’s tennis relationship drama “Challengers” (Amazon MGM) opens Friday amidst chatter that it represents the rarest of films — a wide-release American sex sizzler, an erotically charged story with young actors with sexual impulses central to its plot.
The marketing forebears for “Challengers” are akin to movies that we’ve not seen in a long time like “Carnal Knowledge,” “Body Heat,” “Don’t Look Now,” and “Fatal Attraction.” These films, where sex can be sweaty and dangerous, were elevated by big stars who dared to play off their images. Other examples include Kevin Costner (“No Way Out”), Debra Winger (“An Officer and a Gentleman”), Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver (“The Year of Living Dangerously”), Jane Fonda (“Klute”), and Warren Beatty.
In the “Challengers” press tour, Zendaya (also a producer here) — with six of her previous seven live-action theatrical releases having domestic grosses of $100 million or more — took pains to dispel...

Dakota Johnson is a passenger in both life and a yellow taxi cab, seeking connection with whomever is most near. For her, that turns out to be crass driver Clark, played by Sean Penn in the two-hander drama “Daddio.”
Their shared journey is from New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport to Hell’s Kitchen, with Johnson’s character Girlie determined to get to Clark’s innermost being. He’s not into it. The indie feature written and directed by Christy Hall debuted at TIFF 2023 and will next play at Tribeca 2024.
Johnson produces alongside TeaTime Pictures partner Ro Donnelly, who told IndieWire that Girlie is emotionally “reflective” of the below-the-line team behind the feature itself.
“Because she is our generation of women who are still approaching these men in a nonjudgmental way because it’s fascinating. We’re not threatened by it,” producer Donnelly said. “And that reveals her power,...

[Editor’s note: this list was originally published April 2021. It has been updated to coincide with the series finale of “The Regime.”]
Kate Winslet is an actress whose performances aren’t defined so much by their rigid technicality, but by their manner of presence. Much like the work of a classical Hollywood movie star, Kate Winslet’s power lies more in the brusque delivery of a cutting line or a piercing glance. There’s a looseness writhing to get out beneath the false composure of her characters, who are almost always marked by their prickly defiance and wit.
Whether bound inside a corset, or to the social and gender mores of a period setting (into which she’s often typecast), there’s a feral charm to her approach. In a movie like “Titanic,” Winslet’s Rose Dewitt Bukater doesn’t quite fit into the stifling world of the early-20th-century upper class; that idea is taken to more contemporary extremes in a movie like “Revolutionary Road” as April Wheeler, a...

2023 was a miraculous year for German actress Sandra Huller. Not only did she receive critical acclaim for her riveting portrayal of a woman on trial for murdering her husband in France’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” she was also praised for her role as the wife of a Nazi commander in the United Kingdom’s German-language “The Zone of Interest.” Indeed, there was much interest in Huller and her two films. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for “Anatomy.” And both “Anatomy” and “Zone” landed slots for Best Picture, as well as Best Director bids for Justine Triet and Jonathan Glazer, respectively.
As I was speaking to academy members ahead of last Sunday’s ceremony, I detected a surprisingly robust amount of support for Huller. And many of those who had voted for her mentioned her work in “The Zone of Interest.” It really did seem...
