Debuting today (March 17) on Vimeo on Demand, Play It Safe is the the debut feature from Melbourne filmmaker Chris Pahlow..
The indie features Nicholas Kato (Gallipoli, The Fear), Clayton Jacobson (Kenny, Animal Kingdom), Maya Aleksandra (Neighbours, Winners and Losers, Wilfred), and is the story of Jamie (Kato), a 26-year-old musician who is out of work and down on his luck..
According to the logline: "After his band breaks up, Jamie.s left with no music, no career and no girlfriend. Stuck teaching piano at a soul-destroying music school, Jamie must decide whether to take a risk and follow his dreams, or surrender to his unhappiness and play it safe"..
Pahlow cites Andrew Bujalski.s pioneering mumblecore feature, 2005's Mutual Appreciation, as a watershed moment.

Every so often an Australian actor makes the leap into directing (with various degrees of success) by joining the overpopulated Australian short film circuit. Some recent examples that spring to mind are Damien Walshe-Howling, Damon Gameau, Angus Sampson and Matilda Brown. Now we have the awesome short film debut of Anya Beyersdorf, who has previously been on screen in lots of shorts and a couple of features, including the just-selected-for-Rotterdam art film Black & White & Sex and another ampersand gem, Rats & Cats - playing opposite the guy who dresses in a dog suit on FX series Wilfred. For whatever reason Anya decided to eschew the festival route, instead sending it around to a few acquaintances -- including me -- to premiere it online. I'm totally biased but it's excellent. The short, Headroom, is part...

Last night, FX debuted Wilfred and either we're high, or this is the most audacious comedy on TV right now.
Based on an Australian hit, this weirdly entertaining head-trip stars recovering Hobbit Elijah Wood as Ryan, a suicidal ex-lawyer who begins to see his neighbor's pet — the titular pooch, played by the Aussie original's Jason Gann — as a foul-mouthed pothead in a dollar-store dog costume. Hazy hilarity ensued...

The first thing you need to know if you plan on watching FX’s new comedy, Wilfred, is that it is bizarre. Not bizarre in a bad way, but in a hilarious way. You can’t help but laugh at seeing a grown man talking to an Australian man in a dog suit.
There’s this guy Ryan (Elijah Wood), and the first thing I noticed about him is he’s kind of anal. And what’s funny is I noticed this quirk while he was attempting suicide. That’s how the show opens. It’s dark, but it breezes past it by using Ryan’s need for everything to be absolutely perfect to make it seem lighter than the subject should be. You see him typing a third draft of his suicide note and then a fourth draft; he mixes the pills he plans to overdose on into a...

Wilfred is the kind of show you really want to like.
It's as unique as a sitcom can get, it features a strong lead in Elijah Wood and it aims for interesting, profound themes. Two and a Half Men this is not.
All that said, I didn't love the series premiere, "Happiness." It was cute and different, but not especially funny, and I can't help but wonder how long such a premise can last.
In order to have staying power, Wilfred has to be more than a one-note series. How many times can a man in a dog suit hump a woman's leg? Or aim to shock viewers with the image of the same canine/human smoking? But let's not critique episodes that haven't aired yet.
Focusing just on the pilot, I can safely say I like Wood and I like Jason Gann, who originated the role of Wilfred in Australia.

There are some perks to being a dog, and clearly there are some perks to playing a dog on television. Series co-creator Jason Gann, who plays the dog 'Wilfred' (Thu., 10Pm Et on FX) in both the current Us series and the former Australian series, certainly seemed to be enjoying the perks in the series premiere.
The central conceit of the show is that Elijah Wood's character Ryan sees his neighbor's dog Wilfred as a man in a dog costume. Everyone else sees a dog.
We also see Gann in his costume, which is why we get to enjoy bizarre visuals of Wilfred nuzzling his nose between a waitress' breasts and even starting to hump her.

Michael Becker/FX Elijah Wood and Jason Gann in “Wilfred”
There’s got to be some kind of promise with a comedy series that begins with a Mark Twain quote.
F/X’s new dark comedy “Wilfred” brought the lights up with a flash of a quote from America’s finest humorist: “The show opens with Sanity and happiness are an impossible combination.”
Our anti-hero, Ryan (Elijah Wood), is trying to kill himself. We know he won’t succeed, but this is a new series,...

I gave my thoughts on FX's strange, funny new buddy comedy "Wilfred" in today's review. Now it's your turn. What did everybody think of Elijah Wood being suicidally depressed, Jason Gann as an Aussie man/dog hybrid, and all the rest? Is Fiona Gubelmann, as Dan suggests, the greatest name in human history? And for those of you familiar with the Australian original (also starring Gann as Wilfred), how would you compare the tones and effectiveness of the two series? Still pondering how much I have to write about the series going forward, but I imagine I'll at least do brief posts on the next two episodes, which...

In the new FX comedy, Wilfred, Elijah Wood stars as Ryan, a depressed ex-lawyer who meets a dog named Wilfred. The only problem is, when the world sees a dog, Ryan sees a guy in a dog suit.
An Australian, pot smoking, hole-digging, horny man in a dog suit.
In his first TV show, this may seem like a gamble for Wood but it may just pay off. The show is funny, dark and totally unique.
I talked Elijah and co-creator and co-star Jason Gann in a conference call where Wood talks about why he decided to do a TV series, what good comedy is and what he looks for in a script.
Wilfred airs on Thursdays on FX. Tonight is the premiere.
Elijah, I imagine that you get offered a lot of TV roles. Why you chose this one?
Elijah Wood: I actually don’t get offered a lot of TV roles.

Elijah Wood has confessed that he signed up to his new sitcom Wilfred on the strength of the show's "unique and difficult to describe" content. Wilfred sees Wood playing a depressed man named Ryan who begins to see his neighbor's pet Wilfred (Jason Gann) as a man in a dog costume. Wood told AOL TV that he did not consider the seriousness of switching his focus from film to television, revealing that he was immediately taken in by the "extremely funny" nature of the material. "I was sent the script for this incarnation, and attached to the script there was a reference to the fact that it was an adaptation of an Australian show. So I kind of immediately went onto YouTube to look up clips, which I thought were brilliant," Wood recalled. "I thought, 'Man, if we do anything close to that, then this is going to be (more...

'Wilfred': Elijah Wood finds new meaning to 'man's best friend' in one of the summer's best comedies
There's a certain amount of genius to the way Jason Gann plays Wilfred, a man in a dog suit -- who's actually a real dog. It's no surprise he's been riding the character for nearly a decade.
First an award-winning 2002 short film, then a two-season Australian series, "Wilfred" arrives in its third iteration as a U.S. series on FX this summer. Little is lost in translation.
Deviating from the original, "Wilfred" follows Ryan (Elijah Wood), a loner who finds salvation in his attractive neighbor's dog just hours after a failed suicide attempt. That dog is just a dog to everyone else, but for Ryan, it's an antagonistic, pot-smoking man in a dog suit who gets him to come out of his shell.
The relationship between Ryan and Wilfred obviously anchors the series, leaving little room for the secondary characters... namely Wilfred's owner, Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann). And though there...

Chicago – FX has developed a nice comedy niche, taking greater risks than most other networks and seeing them pay off with hits like “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “The League,” and “Archer.” The network is still relatively new to the comedy game and so their young track record is even more impressive. Naturally, there’s going to be a few speed bumps. One such bump premieres tonight in the uneven “Wilfred,” but it’s paired with the hysterical “Louie,” one of the best shows on TV this season.
Television Rating: 4.5/5.0
“Louie”
Let’s start with the positive. “Louie” is one of those rare programs that seems to be getting funnier by the episode. The first season started a little rocky but eventually developed a comedic consistency and the new season seems even more promising. The first two episodes of the second season are great, perfectly distilling what works so...

Michael Becker/FX Elijah Wood and Jason Gann in ‘Wilfred’
Who can resist a well-told story about a boy and his dog? Just look at “My Dog Skip,” that sentimental tale where love and companionship know no bounds. Tonight, FX Networks will tap into that wonderful concept – only this time, it’s a little different: it’s a story of a boy, and his hot neighbor’s dog – who actually turns out to be a dude in a dog suit.

Elijah Wood shares the response to 'Wilfred'

Photo of Elijah Wood by Frank Ockenfels/FXElijah Wood is one of those elite Hollywood actors who almost seems blissfully unaware of his own stature. His illustrious movie career, which includes "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy is also peppered with projects designed to keep him from being type-cast in the industry. And yet an actor like Wood, who has captured the attention of audiences for hours on end in one of the most powerful ensemble casts in recent motion picture history, needs to be worried about anything but being type-cast. Still it seems, he's continuing to take on roles that are original and unexpectedly entertaining.

It's safe to say you probably haven't seen another sitcom like 'Wilfred' ... and I mean that in the best way possible.
Elijah Wood stars as a severely depressed guy named Ryan who has very vivid conversations and insane adventures with a dog named Wilfred. The catch: he's the only one who sees the pup as a man in a dog suit. A man in a dog suit who's often smoking massive amounts of pot when he's not digging holes in the backyard, fetching things and trying everything to get Ryan to live a little.
That shaggy fetching man is none other than co-creator Jason Gann, who helmed the short film and Aussie series of the same name and concept before reimagining it for American audiences.

Tonight a very unusual show calledWilfred premiers on FX. But perhaps even more surprising than the premise of aguy who talks to a dude in a dog suit, is that the series stars movie starElijah Wood. In a recent conference all interview we spoke with the actor fromthe Lord of the Rings trilogy and Wilfred creator Jason Gann.

Television often requires a certain suspension of disbelief, but the new FX comedy Wilfred (Thursdays at 10pm) takes it to a new level. The show's premise is so outrageously preposterous that viewers have two choices: accept it or don't watch. If you choose the latter, you'll be missing out on one of the most hilarious and surreal comedies of all-time.
Wilfred centers on Ryan (Elijah Wood), a depressed law school graduate who tries to kill himself at the start of the series, but fails. The next morning his hot neighbor asks him to watch her dog, and while everyone else in the world sees an actual dog, Ryan sees Wilfred (Jason Gann) as a surly Australian man in a dog suit.

Elijah Wood has claimed that Wilfred's motives in his new FX sitcom are "ambiguous". Wilfred stars Wood as Ryan, a depressed man who begins to see his neighbour's pet Wilfred as a man in a dog costume. Wilfred (Jason Gann) begins to offer Ryan advice but Wood explained that he may not have good intentions. "There are motives, seemingly dark motives, underneath Wilfred's directions occasionally," Wood told Entertainment Weekly. "And then something will take a twist and pan out in a very different way than we expect or Ryan expects. "Or perhaps he'll take that path knowing that it's not the right thing and then something positive will come out of it, which is always keeping it in question with whether or not the motives are genuinely pure or for Wilfred's own interests. On June 23, FX will unveil Wilfred, a surreal series about a suicidal former attorney (Elijah Wood) named Ryan, who sees his neighbor’s pooch not as a furry creature but rather as a rude dude in a dog suit (Jason Gann, who co-created the original Australian version of the show). To learn a little more about one of the more unusual shows to hit primetime in recent years, fetch a new issue of EW — and chew on these bonus quotes from Wood and Gann.

For the second consecutive year, Encore has chosen a select group of screen professionals who have achieved new heights in 2010/2011, whose decisions influence and shape Australia’s audiovisual industry, and whose work has stood out from the crowd. These are our Power 50.
1. Emile Sherman – Producer
Last February, Sherman became the first Australian producer to receive an Academy Award for Best Picture, alongside his See-Saw Films partner Iain Canning, and Bedlam Productions’ Gareth Unwin. It also won at the BAFTAs and the Producers Guild of America, in addition to the many other honours for its cast and crew.
While technically a UK production, the Australianness of the film is undeniable – and so is its success; with a modest U$15m budget, The King’s Speech has grossed more than $405m worldwide – one of the most successful independent films of all time. Read Emile Sherman interview

Jason Gann’s American version of Wilfred has been picked up by BBC3 before its launch on channel FX on 23 June.
The show stars Elijah Wood as Ryan, replacing Adam Zwar’s introverted Adam, with Gann still in the dog costume.
Gann is also Co-Executive Producer for the American series alongside Executive Producers Joe Connor and Ken Connor, producers of the Australian version and David Zuckerman (The Family Guy, American Dad, King of the Hill).
Gann and Zwar expanded the storyline of their 2002 Best Comedy Tropfest short film, for an Sbs series.
Of the BBC3 pick up Steve Cornish, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution said “We are delighted to be expanding our comedy line up with BBC3 and feel confident that Wilfred will prove a big hit with the UK”
Will American audiences ‘get’ Wilfred’s humour? Will it go the way of the American Kath and Kim?...

If the Idoldome were a Magic 8 Ball, and you asked it whether Scotty McCreery would be this year’s winner, the Idoldome would have responded, “It is decidedly so.” Last night’s performance show felt like a coronation at times, particularly after Scotty finished crooning Kenny Rogers’ “She Believes in Me.” After that song, one guy in the audience screamed, “Welcome to the finale, Scotty!” Other folks settled on less imaginative chants, such as “We love you, Scotty” and “You’re awesome, Scotty!” I mention this because the Idoldome is my only window into what a sizable group of people thinks about these contestants.

FX’s quirky down-under import Wilfred is fleshing out its guest cast in preparation for a June debut. Among the players: Lost‘s Nestor Carbonell, Parks and Recreations regular Rashida Jones, and many others.
If you haven’t heard by now, Wilfred is a half-hour comedy about a man who sees his neighbor’s dog in a different light. Ryan (Elijah Wood) perceives Wilfred (original co-creator Jason Gann) as an uninhibited guy in a dog suit, while everyone else sees, well, a dog.
Carbonell gained the public eye by playing Richard Alpert on Lost. Keen readers will also recognize him as Gotham City’s mayor in The Dark Knight and a gun for hire in Smokin’ Aces. He’s been making the rounds since the early 90s, guest starring on shows like Scrubs, Psych and Cold Case. In Wilfred, ...

More details are coming out about Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s pilot for FX, American Horror Story. The co-creators of Glee and Nip/Tuck found their lead actor in Dylan McDermott (The Practice) who will play Ben Harmon, a therapist who is said to love his family but has hurt his wife, Vivien played by Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights). Jessica Lange (Big Fish) will play their nosy neighbor. The role was originally supposed to be a small one, but Lange’s casting has prompted the writers to add more importance. Denis O’Hare (Milk) has also been casted but his role is not yet known. Once Glee wraps for the current season, production for American Horror Story will begin and is targeting the fall season launch of the show. Deadline first reported the news.

The next Aussie import to hit U.S. airwaves comes to us in June, when "Wilfred" begins airing on FX.
Fans of the hit Australian comedy can expect a toned down version of new series, but co-creator and star Jason Gann promises a smarter version as well.
Zap2it spoke with Gann and Elijah Wood, who co-star in this off-beat comedy about a man, a man-dog and an unlikely friendship.
"The Aussie version had no rules," Gann explains. "We had nudity and obscenities and pretty much it was all about the dog. This series is more about -- it goes into the psychology of where Wilfred came from, and we see Wilfred through the eyes of this guy who's going through these personal problems.
"It's just a lot smarter of a show," he adds. "There's a lot more planning and developments gone into it."

FX’s latest original series is Wilfred, a half-hour comedy starring Elijah Wood as a suicidal manic-depressive and Jason Gann as a dog. This one’s going to be strange, folks.
Wilfred is yet another Americanized comedy adaptation, this time coming from the Australian show of the same name. A new comedy on FX is sure to wag some tails. FX.s newest original series, "Wilfred" is an "out there" comedy where Elijah Wood of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy is cast as a severely depressed character who's perked up by a dog, of sorts. Based on an Australian TV series, "Wilfred" is the tale of Ryan (Wood) and his dog, Wilfred (Jason Gann), who is imagined by Ryan as a man in a dog suit, who then becomes Ryan's talking alter-ego and buddy. Wilfred snaps Ryan out of a deep depression and acts as a wing dog for Ryan to connect to his pretty owner, played by Fiona Gublemann. The 13 episode series was co-created by co-star...
