One day, we all must leave this world to meet our maker, and some shows are called upon by Danny McBride sooner than others.
This week, fans of the hit HBO comedy-drama The Righteous Gemstones learned that the show’s upcoming fourth season will be its last. In his infinite wisdom, series creator and star McBride decided to go out on a high note and deliver his latest cult-beloved series about cocky lunatics living in the South its last rites before the show could possibly suffer the late-series corruption that claimed the souls of so many quality comedies before it. But, as the Righteous Gemstones’ flock struggles with this somber news, they should take comfort in the fact that McBride now has the opportunity to deliver his magnum opus to HBO heaven.
“The Lord spoke to me and said it’s time to wrap this sucker up,” McBride explained in a statement to Variety,...

The “Florida Man” meme stands out as a bright thread in the tapestry of modern culture, a reflection of the bizarre and frequently gross aspects of human existence. This phenomenon captures the essence of the absurd: tales that are so outrageous that they go beyond just being hard to believe, forcing us to confront the dissonance between reality and our expectations.
The series “It’s Florida, Man” serves as an anthology that brings these narratives to life while inviting viewers to navigate the murky waters of human folly and desperation. Each episode plays out like a twisted fairy tale, mixing the surreal with the every day and illuminating the darker corners of Hu Man’s mind.
The creators of this exploration are Mark Herwick and Jeff Tomsic, whose backgrounds in comedic storytelling shape a lens through which these crazy tales are reflected. The series is made more complicated by their partnership with Rough House Pictures,...

Exclusive: Ahead of It’s Florida, Man‘s Season 1 finale on November 22, the late-night comedy series has been renewed for a second season by HBO.
An irreverent, low-budget anthology comedy, It’s Florida, Man has been proof of concept for HBO, and its impressive performance is expected to usher in more shows developed under that cost-effective comedy model to the network’s late-night.
Acknowledging on an investor call last year that hit drama series in general provide better return on investment than comedies, Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content, has been looking to revamp the genre, mixing up high-end, star-driven vehicles with off-beat, cheaper entires as the TV industry across the board has been trying to bring comedy costs down.
HBO’s previous lower-budget comedy efforts under that strategy include Los Espoookys and How To with John Wilson.
The latest experiment, It’s Florida, Man, has delivered an attractive cost-vs.

Hayes Davenport is a comedy writer with an enviable resume, having worked on shows like “Eastbound & Down,” “Family Guy,” “Vice Principals” and “Dickinson.” Yet he left that career behind for a three-year run working at City Hall, with a special focus on helping Los Angeles’ homeless population.
It’s a journey he first started by supporting the campaign of Nithya Raman, who became a Los Angeles City Council member for the 4th District in 2020.
“It was Nithya laying out a path for me to go out and talk to people, something I wouldn’t have felt like I could just do on my own,” he says. “From gradually seeing opportunities to actually help people get off the street … once you’ve done it a few times, you just can’t not do it. It activates and empowers you in a way that very few jobs can.”

If you’ve been on the internet for any length of time since about 2013, you’ve run into the “Florida Man” meme, premised on the idea that, at any given moment, a Florida man is wilding out in a way that’s possibly criminal and definitely irrational. If a man is almost dying getting a lap dance from his housekeeper, snorting coke to hide evidence after fleeing a traffic stop or jogging shirtless in defiance of Hurricane Milton’s imminent landfall, he’s a Florida man. He’s been immortalized in a website, an Instagram feed, a subreddit and quasi-Olympic “Games” where competitors wrestle in muddy water and tussle while holding pitchers of beer. He used to be the subject of a Twitter feed collecting kooky stories, but its curator, Freddie Campion, retired it in 2019. As he told Logan Hill for a piece in the Washington Post that year, Campion shut it down after wondering,...

Fox is developing a comedy series centered on a washed up golf prodigy, Variety has learned exclusively.
Titled “Thunderjacks,” the series has received a script commitment at the broadcast network. Chad Mountain is writing and executive producing, with Oliver Hudson, John Stalberg Jr., Douglas Banker of Five All in the Fifth, Jonathan Watson, and Scott MacArthur also executive producing. Fox Entertainment Studios will produce.
The official logline for the series states, “A famous former golf prodigy, who vanished into anonymity after a very public meltdown, is dragged into the limelight a decade later, forcing his dysfunctional family to futilely scramble to save their opulent lifestyle and fragile egos.”
There is no cast currently attached to the project, but sources say it could serve as a starring vehicle for Hudson should it go forward. The show falls under the broadcast direct deal Hudson and his producing partner Stalberg signed with Fox in 2023. Under that deal,...

Talk to John Hawkes about “True Detective: Night Country” for any length of time and you’ll get a string of confessions.
When showrunner Issa López offered him the role of police officer Hank Prior, he’d never seen a single episode from the first three seasons of the HBO limited series. He thought the character was too one-dimensional and not nuanced enough. When López said she wanted the character to play guitar in one scene, he didn’t think that was a good idea. And when she said that the instrumental song he’d reluctantly written also needed words for Hank to sing, he resisted for weeks, thinking it’d be too performative.
Hawkes admitted all of these misgivings with typically self-deprecating grins and then shrugged. “I’m glad she prevailed,” he said, “because she’s brilliant.”
López’s brilliance, along with Hawkes’ ability to slip into the skin...

HBO's loyalty to its actors is evident in The Last of Us' casting, with many familiar faces from other HBO shows making appearances. Pedro Pascal brings a softer side to Joel in The Last of Us, showcasing emotionality and vulnerability alongside his badassness. Bella Ramsey captures Ellie's spirit effectively in The Last of Us, drawing on their Game of Thrones experience to play the role authentically.
From Game of Thrones Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey to The White Lotus Murray Bartlett, pretty much every major actor from The Last of Us had worked with HBO before. This year’s Toronto International Film Festival will open with a familiar face: filmmaker David Gordon Green’s latest, the world premiere of his heartfelt comedy “Nutcrackers,” will kick off the festival on September 5. While Green is a regular at the annual festival, screening everything from his Jake Gyllenhaal-starring Boston Marathon biopic “Stronger” to his horror re-quel “Halloween” at the event, 2024 marks the first time he will officially open the fall fest.
The film also sounds as if it marks a return to early form for the longtime auteur, who has spent his most recent years helming a series of horror-centric sequels and remakes, including three “Halloween” films and last year’s “The Exorcist: Believer.” For his newest feature, Green seems to be reinvested in the kind of personal drama that drove early films like “All the Real Girls” and “Undertow,” albeit with a slightly lighter touch.

Amid persistent rumors that the Booster Gold Max series is in the process of assembling its creative team, we're now hearing that the project has enlisted a trio of righteous writers to work on the scripts.
According to Nexus Point News, James Gunn and Peter Safran have tapped Danny McBride, John Carcieri and Jeff Fradley, the creative team behind the HBO Max Original series The Righteous Gemstones, to work on the show.
If accurate, this may lend some credence to a previous rumor that the team's frequent collaborator Jody Hill was hired as director/showrunner.
Gunn recently shot down a report that production was set to commence in July, but he did reveal that "most" of the Dcu-based shows currently in the pipeline have set their creative teams.
Back in 2022, Gunn asked his social media followers which character that has yet to appear in the Dcu they'd most like to see on screen,...

Sue Naegle and Ali Krug are re-teaming for a new venture.
The former Annapurna duo and longtime collaborators have launched Dinner Party Productions and signed a multiple-year overall deal with Universal Content Productions.
Naegle, the former content chief at Megan Ellison’s company, and Krug, who was co-head of TV alongside her at Annapurna, will develop and produce new projects for UCP for both NBCUniversal-owned platforms as well as third-party buyers.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Naegle and Krug — who have worked together for 13 years — said the appeal of being able to sell to outside buyers was part of why they wanted to sign with the Beatrice Springborn-led division that is housed within Pearlena Igbokwe’s Universal Studio Group. (Read the Q&a, below.)
As part of the pact, Naegle and Krug have boarded Peacock’s adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s New York Times best-seller The Five-Star Weekend.

Danny McBride and friend David Gordon Green were sitting around Rough House Pictures in South Carolina and spitballing about about improvements they might make to the movie-going experience.
In a GQ interview, McBride revealed he hates the modern-theater-that-serves-dinner trend. “I hate it, I can’t stand it,” he said. “I also don’t think it makes sense to combine booze with movies. You’re going to have to piss. Doesn’t alcohol make you want to get up and get loose? You don’t want to sit there, drink beer, and just be quiet. I would have no interest in going to see a movie and just pounding IPAs. Just f**king falling asleep.”
Ah, but there is an alternative vision to that.

Two decades ago, Civic Development Group put a lot of people to work who couldn’t find it anywhere else. The telemarketing company employed high school dropouts, convicted felons, and drug addicts, many of whom felt as though they’d found their calling at a company that incentivized them to unwittingly participate in a high-stakes grift.
As they juggled calls on behalf of policemen unions and other charitable organizations, inadvertently duping gullible targets into opening their wallets, they had no idea how little money actually went to the organizations themselves. In truth, CDG was making a killing, keeping 90 percent of all donations — while its staffers treated the office as a hedonistic playground.

The Safdies may be (temporarily) breaking up as directors, but the brothers are still a showbiz team. Josh and Benny Safdie have executive produced a new documentary limited series “Telemarketers” for HBO, it was announced Wednesday. The channel has set an August 13 premiere date for the series, in addition to releasing the official trailer.

The series chronicles, with the assistance of footage shot by Limpman-Stern, the duo’s time working in the telemarketing industry during the early 2000s, when Limpman-Stern was a 14 year-old high school dropout and Pespas was a top salesman dealing with addiction issues. The two worked for a company that advertised itself as raising money for police and firefighter charities, but in reality pocketed most of the money.

HBO’s potential deal to license a slew of library titles to rival Netflix, as revealed by Deadline, was met with derision by some, another example of Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav selling off the crown jewels to hit his savings targets.
However, industry experts have urged that the move could actually open the door to streaming profitability and increase residuals for creatives, leading to a larger digital détente.
Talk of such a move was a surprise, largely given the frostiness between the two rivals, which have been battling it out on the talent and awards front for the last few years, but optics aside, a deal, which was described as “groundbreaking” by one source, could be good for consumers and the town.

From the twisted mind of Danny McBride comes HBO's The Righteous Gemstones, and the Righteous Gemstones cast is full of recognizable faces from other McBride productions and beyond. Centered on a family of televangelists and their various antics, the comedy series is full of larger-than-life characters, most of whom are prone to either taking themselves too seriously or acting like fools. The true brilliance of the series, however, lies in its cast’s ability to mine their characters for such hilarious comedy.
Following two televangelist generations in the Gemstone family, The Righteous Gemstones cast consists of four main players: patriarch Eli Gemstone, eldest son and pastor Jesse, the middle child and oddball Judy, and Youth Pastor Kelvin. There is also a revolving door of recurring characters and guest stars that add significant color to the Righteous Gemstones cast and allow the series to keep spinning its wildest narrative threads.

Last month, HBO said goodbye to two of its signature series: “Succession,” a tale of three born billionaires vying to replace their aging patriarch; and “Barry,” an action comedy that unlocked new levels of ambition in its star-auteur, Bill Hader. Fans — and, one presumes, the network — were left with a vacuum the next seasons of “The White Lotus” and “House of the Dragon” are too far off to fill. Fortunately, a show that combines the best of both its erstwhile peers returns June 18 for a third season. “The Righteous Gemstones” remains consistent in its outrageous opulence and crude humor, but its latest chapter is unusually well timed.
Like “Succession,” “The Righteous Gemstones” follows a family poisoned by wealth and power at a crucial inflection point; like “Barry,” the show has a visual panache that defies our expectations for a half-hour comedy. But unlike either show, “The Righteous Gemstones” resists the...

Ah, okay: so there’s really just one Wes Anderson film this year. He can be forgiven for not putting out two ornate, exhaustively manicured works in a twelve-month span, just as we can be absolved for assuming The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar might be notably longer than an episode of Eastbound & Down. But during an interview with Indiewire the director, who is hours out from the release of Asteroid City, revealed his second Roald Dahl adaptation will in fact be closer to BBC’s Play for Today series––which gave a medium-length platform for the likes of Mike Leigh and Alan Clarke––than Fantastic Mr. Fox.
Whatever jokes can be made about the change in expectations, it’s only refreshing to have a capital-a Auteur use Netflix’s fake-capital empire for these experiments in adaptation and duration. And par for this director’s course: Anderson compared the...

Actor and rapper Chaitnya Sharma, professionally known as ‘Slow Cheeta’, has released the music video of his new single ’90’s ke Ladke featuring D’Evil. A rawer and energising track, it speaks of memories of an era gone by.
The rappers go old school, capturing the ’90s hip hop vibes in a mix of freestyle and gangsta rap complete with great flow and delivery.
The track features fellow rapper D’Evil with whom Slow Cheeta goes on an energising collaboration, complete with wit, sarcasm, attitude and just a good deal of fun. Though rhythmically simple, the track produced by Ink Heart, is full of raw old school energy and features a very clear production, with the accompanying sound design providing enough room to accentuate both the rhythm as well as its energy.
Set in Mumbai, the music video, which is both simple and effective, encapsulates the unique style and vibe of...

The Angry Birds Movie voice cast includes actors who appear in big-name TV shows and movies. The movie centers on Red, an outcast from his community of flightless birds, who investigates a group of green pigs when their ship arrives on his island. Suspecting the pigs of a nefarious plot, Red and his friends Chuck and Bomb seek the help of the Mighty Eagle. The Angry Birds Movie was a critical failure, earning only 43% on Rotten Tomatoes. But thanks to its talented ensemble cast and established IP, the 2016 film was enough of a box office success to warrant a sequel, The Angry Birds Movie 2, released in 2019.
When this film came out in 2016, it appealed to both children and nostalgic adults who played the Angry Birds mobile games. In the original Angry Birds game, released in December 2009, players launched birds at green pigs and their structures in order to smash everything.
