Aside from some leaked promo art, Tim Blake Nelson's returning Samuel Sterns, aka the Leader, has been kept mostly under wraps in the marketing for Captain America: Brave New World.

This latest TV spot for the movie also keeps the character in the shadows, but because he steps ever so slightly closer to the light, adjusting the brightness and contrast levels reveals our first official glimpse of the super-smart villain.

As you'll see from the image below, Sterns really doesn't look very much like the promo art at all. Aside from being clean-shaven, his signature elongated cranium is much smaller, and it looks like his brain is partially exposed (the character has had a similar look in the comics).

Marvel had a rough year in 2023. Many of its properties underperformed, and they lost their big villain due to Jonathan Majors being fired. Looking forward to their upcoming slate, comic fans have been excited about some of the studio’s projects over the next few years. Will these films help Marvel regain control? The upcoming Thunderbolts film has been one that fanboys have been hoping to see since the MCU started. With some recent news about the property coming up, it seems like the right time to break down what we know about the production.

Who Are The Thunderbolts?

The team first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1997 in an issue of The Incredible Hulk. They seemed to be a new group of superheroes that had arrived on the scene and gained acclaim very quickly. The reader was informed that the group was actually a group of supervillains led by Baron Zemo.

Marvel’s Thunderbolts feels like a moment of deja vu. It began with a post-credit scene in Iron Man when Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) arrived at the Stark Tower to have a chat with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) about the Avengers Initiative; at least he didn’t have to chase him like Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) on the streets of New York. Now Contessa Valentina “Val” Allegra de Fontaine (let me catch my breath for a minute) is seemingly walking down the same path.

We (almost) knew why Nick Fury was so interested in bringing the world’s mightiest heroes together, but the initiative was a success, though we lost a couple of our Avengers by the end of the Infinity Saga. But Valentina? It’s still not clear to me what she is up to, but it looks like she will be the one pulling strings for the new team.

Betty Ross is one of the more forgotten characters of The Hulk’s mythos, whether it be the films or comics. She appeared last in the MCU back in 2008, when Edward Norton was the Incredible Hulk. Essayed by the likes of Jennifer Connely (in Ang Lee’s Hulk film) and Liv Tyler (in the MCU), Betty Ross has always served as the ‘beauty’ part of the Beauty and the Beast dynamic she has going on with Bruce Banner and the Hulk, much to Thaddeus’ charging. However, that dynamic was lost in the MCU, especially after the franchise started shipping Bruce with Natasha.

As is often the case when a big superhero movie's release date draws near, international marketing is beginning to kick up a few gears, and this latest poster for Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World assembles most of the film's main heroes and villains for the first time.

In addition to new looks at Cap, Falcon, Sidewinder, President Ross (and his Red Hulk alter ego looming in the background), this artwork gives us a first glimpse of Sabra in her superhero costume.

For Captain America: Brave New World actor Anthony Mackie, getting into character is serious business. The star, who portrays Sam Wilson/Captain America, follows a process for every role that he plays.

In an interview with Fandango, Mackie explained how he finds inspiration to play Sam:

“11817” follows a family of four who are suddenly sealed inside their home with no way out, and they must work to survive against both their dwindling resources and the mysterious, looming threat that is keeping them trapped.

“Directing projects where the audience gets behind the characters has always been my focus. However complex, flawed, heroic, we identify with them as we live through their journey,” Leterrier previously said in a statement. “It’s what excites me about ‘11817’s’ wholly original concept and the family at the heart of our story. This is an experience that movie audiences won’t forget.”

The trailer for Daredevil: Born Again is here and he is back with a bang! Matt Murdock, reprised by Charlie Cox, is here for new adventures. However, it is much different this time.

Charlie Cox has previously played the titular character for three seasons on Netflix series, Daredevil, from 2015 to 2018. It has been a long wait since then for the fans to be able to see Matt Murdock take center stage once again!

Harvey Laidman, a television director known for working on multiple episodes of “The Waltons,” “Matlock” and “7th Heaven,” died Jan. 3 in Simi Valley, Calif. He was 82.

Laidman’s death was confirmed to Hollywood Reporter by his son, Dan Laidman, with the cause of death being cancer.

Throughout his multiple decades in the industry, Laidman directed episodes on a wide range of shows, including “Hawaii Five-o,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Quantum Leap,” “The Dukes of Hazzard,” “Magnum, P.I.,” “Jake and the Fatman,” “The Fitzpatricks,” “Eight Is Enough,” “The Blue Knight” and “Kojak.”

Harvey Laidman, a veteran television director who helmed episodes of such shows like The Waltons, Matlock and Magnum P.I., died Jan. 3 at the age of 82.

Per previous reporting by The Hollywood Reporter, his son, Dan Laidman, said his father died of cancer in a hospice facility in Simi Valley, Calif.

Laidman, who worked as a TV director across three decades, was born in 1942 in Cleveland to a librarian mother and an electrical contractor father. In his youth, he spent three formative summers working with the legendary Kenley Players theater company in Warren, Ohio, which hosted numerous productions with big-name Broadway, film and TV stars.

Laidman studied electrical engineering at Kent State University before transferring to USC, where he earned a degree in cinema in 1964. Harvey Laidman, a veteran TV director who helmed multiple episodes of such series as The Waltons, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, the original Matlock and 7th Heaven, has died. He was 82.

Laidman died of cancer on Jan. 3 in a hospice facility in Simi Valley, his son, Dan Laidman, told The Hollywood Reporter.

During his three-decade-plus career, he also directed installments of The Blue Knight, Family, Hawaii Five-o, Hunter, Kojak, Eight Is Enough, The Incredible Hulk, Lou Grant, Knots Landing, Falcon Crest, Airwolf, Knight Rider, Magnum, P.I., Jake and the Fatman, Silk Stalkings and Jag.

Laidman served as assistant director and unit production manager on the second and third seasons of CBS’ The Waltons from 1973-75, then advanced to the director’s chair to call the shots on 11 episodes of the beloved period drama from 1975-81.

The next addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America: Brave New World, is set to reach theatres on February 14, 2025 – and wrestler Seth Rollins has confirmed that his role has been cut out of the film.

Captain America: Brave New World went into production in March of 2023, with filming lasting through June. In May, Rollins was spotted on set and appeared to be playing a member of the villainous Serpent Society. But in December of ’23, another screenwriter was brought onto the project to write new material for reshoots, and those reshoots seemed to be quite substantial, lasting from May 2024 through November. We know that the story still involves the Serpent Society; in fact, the reshoots added Giancarlo Esposito into the mix as Sidewinder, the leader of the Serpent Society… but for some reason, Rollins’ character no longer fit into the reworked story.

When the Marvel Cinematic Universe launched in 2008, it was with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. The latter was neither a hit nor a flop, but given the tepid response to the reboot and behind-the-scenes issues with actor Edward Norton, it quickly became the franchise's black sheep.

Rights issues with Universal Pictures also came into play and it wasn't until 2022's She-Hulk: Attorney at Law that The Incredible Hulk was referenced in a meaningful way (next up is The Leader's return in Captain America: Brave New World).

We first told you about rumoured plans for a Hulk vs. Wolverine movie in November. Now, reliable leaker @Cryptic4KQual has shared some additional insights into this long-awaited battle and what it could mean for both the Mutant Saga and the rumoured Avengers vs. X-Men movie.

Harrison Ford's Red Hulk has enough potential to be a recurring character after his introduction in Captain America: Brave New World, unlike many other MCU villains. Thaddeus Ross' MCU story took a while to reach its climax. Ross' journey began in 2008's The Incredible Hulk, was put on hold until 2016's Captain America: Civil War, and briefly resumed in 2021's Black Widow before Red Hulk appears on the scene in 2025's Captain America: Brave New World. In retrospect, Thaddeus Ross' transformation into Red Hulk may have been inevitable despite Hulk's lack of a solo movie and Ross' required recasting following William Hurt's passing.

Ross sides with the Leader and the Intelligencia to transform into the Red Hulk in the comics, but that doesn't seem to be the case in Captain America: Brave New World. Instead, Harrison Ford's President Ross appears to be an involuntary guinea pig for the Leader's experiments.

Things are back on track for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The beloved franchise has delivered some of its strongest outings in recent memory over the course of the past year, with the box-office sensation Deadpool and Wolverine and the universally-adored Agatha All Along all helping it climb back up to the top of the mountain.

Speaking of comebacks, Marvel has officially unveiled the first look at its upcoming villain.

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ is bound to introduce new characters to the MCU but also see the return of some old characters and among them is The Leader, played by Tim Blake Nelson.

Initially, The Leader was only rumored to appear in the film but the character was confirmed by the release of the first trailer as fans could see Doctor Samuel Sterns in one of the background shots.

Since then Nelson, who also portrayed the character in ‘The Incredible Hulk’ spoke openly about his character and revealed that they will rely on practical effects to make him look as accurately as possible.

While fans are looking forward to seeing Leader with an oversized green forehead, recently revealed art for the upcoming movie showcased exactly what we can expect and some fans might be disappointed:

We first met Samuel Sterns in 2008's The Incredible Hulk; the movie ended with him being exposed to Gamma-irradiated blood which dripped into a wound on his head, causing his head to mutate.

We haven't seen him since but the villain will make his long-awaited return in Captain America: Brave New World next month.

It's an unexpected movie to bring The Leader back into the fold (why not She-Hulk: Attorney at Law?), though with Red Hulk set to be unleashed and a World War Hulk project somewhere on the horizon, this is likely just the beginning for the character's MCU arc.

The superhero movies of the MCU, the Dcu, and other franchises have occasionally proven to hurt the careers of the actors who star in them. Long before the movies of the MCU cemented the genre as the most dominant in modern cinema, it wasn’t uncommon for superhero movies to be considered some of Hollywood’s worst offerings. As DC Studios kicks off its rebooted on-screen universe and Marvel focuses more on quality over quantity, there are probably less superhero films on the way than you’d expect. At least, specifically in 2025.

In total, there are only four new ones on the way for the year, three of which are coming from Marvel. That’s largely the result of schedule shakeups and a bigger focus on TV series.
