Perspective of a person's sense of place

A monkey puzzle tree is battering the parlor window of Gull Cottage in a storm, while also always blocking the view. Captain Gregg (Edward Mulhare) vehemently opposes Mrs. Muir (Hope Lange) having cut down his prize tree. He consents to never losing his temper again in allowing her to have a free hand in making her home to her tastes. The captain struggles to see all of his precious, memory-filled nautical antiques taken away from him in place of modern furnishings. When the tree falls, so does the Captain's sense of being and he leaves. Saddened, Mrs. Muir goes in search of a compromise in hopes of bringing back the Captain.
