Doubts in Exposing a Cowardly Captain

Mrs. Muir is attending an important historical society meeting at the home of Elvira Grover (familiar holier-than-thou mother-type character actress Mabel Albertson, "Mrs. Stephens" from "Bewitched"). Captain Gregg (Edward Mulhare) pops in, but can only be seen by Mrs. Muir who comically makes a timid man at the meeting feel chastised. She is tasked with writing the official history of Captain Horatio Figg, selected as "the most outstanding figure in the history of Schooner Bay". Captain Gregg is highly upset at the pick and it not being him, throwing a teapot and breaking a model of the statue to be erected, for which Mrs. Muir is blamed. He contends that Captain Figg was nothing but a coward and wasn't even at the Battle of Vera Cruz for which he gained his fame. Captain Gregg: "When he heard we were going to war he ordered us to put him off halfway there. It's the only time in naval history that a captain has mutinied against his own crew." He wants Mrs. Muir to expose Captain Figg, but she insists she must have evidence first. She is told by Mrs. Grover that the historical society matron is Figg's great grandniece and is the one that has pushed for his honor. Mrs. Muir finds Captain Figg's journal to back up his heroic status, to which Captain Gregg contends is lies. She visits her landlord Claymore Gregg who is also town clerk and asks for the death records. Not finding that he died in Schooner Bay further contradicts Captain Gregg's claims. Captain Gregg resorts to sabotage, which puts Mrs. Muir in hot water until a discovery is made.

Edward Mulhare's Captain Gregg has some nice wisecracking one-liners in the episode.
