Seth Rogen recently spoke on his personal life-inspired comedy Superbad and if a movie like that could get made today. When inquired if comedy is harder to make in this day and age, the star responded, “The complaint that comedy’s harder than it used to be is not a valid complaint. Maybe it was too easy before. And why should it be? Why shouldn’t it be hard? I like that my job is hard, because I’m trying to do something that requires a huge amount of resources and people’s time and energy.” He added, “I’m constantly meeting teenagers who love Superbad and who think it holds up, and none of them are like: How f*cking dare you have said that?”

It was the response a studio head would love. On Friday night at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival in Austin, Texas, Apple TV+ premiered the first episodes of its new Hollywood comedy The Studio to several rave reviews from attendees.
The result should not surprise historians of the annual Austin event. The Studio co-creator, director, writer, executive producer, and star Seth Rogen has enjoyed many successful launches at SXSW, including Knocked Up, Neighbors, Sausage Party, Long Shots, and Good Boys.
“The Studio is the best new TV series since the first season of Hacks. It is so clever and funny and well directed and perfectly acted. I can’t wait for everyone to see it,” wrote Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh.
Inverse editor Hoai-Tran Bui called The Studio, “Entourage, but for Film Twitter (positive). Really enjoyed seeing this with a crowd, whose laughter was so loud, I missed 20% of the dialogue.

Apple is taking a bite out of Hollywood this spring thanks to the comedy series The Studio.
On Friday, Apple TV+ released the first official trailer for the meta-comedy from co-creator, -writer, -director, -executive producer, and star Seth Rogen. “I am so excited about watching this trailer,” Rogen's character, Matt Remick, says in the opening moments of the teaser.
The Studio features Rogen as "the newly appointed head of embattled Continental Studios. As movies struggle to stay alive and relevant, Matt and his core team of infighting executives battle their own insecurities as they wrangle narcissistic artists and craven corporate overlords in the ever-elusive pursuit of making great films. With their power suits masking their never-ending sense of panic, every party, set visit, casting decision, marketing meeting, and award show presents them with an opportunity for glittering success or career-ending catastrophe. The Original Pantry Café, an iconic Downtown L.A. landmark featured in Knocked Up, Snowfall, The Million Dollar Hotel and many of Michael Connelly’s bestsellers featuring Detective Harry Bosch — later portrayed by Titus Welliver on Bosch — has closed after more than 100 years.
The closure is a result of a dispute between new owners and the union representing the employees. The owners decided to close the restaurant after the two sides could not reach a labor agreement.
Customers waited for hours in line for a table on Sunday to get one last meal at the famous eatery, which was named Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 255.
The coffee shop was located at the corner of 9th and Figueroa near L.A. Live and Crypto.com Arena. It served coleslaw to all patrons no matter the time of day. The bread was delicious. Coffee was free until 2011.

Despite releasing at the end of 2023, one of 2024's biggest sleeper hits at the box office was "Anyone But You," a romantic-comedy starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney as former lovers who cross paths at a destination wedding and pretend to be a couple in order to placate their respective families. Given the film's financial success, it shows a potential bright future for the rom-com genre, which in recent years has struggled to have the success it once had throughout the 2000s with hits like "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and "Knocked Up."
Thanks to "Anyone But You," there are a lot of audiences with a renewed interest in satiating their desire for a raunchy, laugh-out-loud rom-com, especially ones with the hard-to-resist enemies-to-lovers trope, a disastrous wedding, or perhaps a reinterpretation a well-known story in the modern era. Judd Apatow has insisted an R-rated comedy could still be a huge box office hit.The 57-year-old actor - who has appeared in movies like 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin' and 'Knocked Up' as well as producing the likes of 'Superbad' and 'Step Brothers' and more over the years - has insisted "one person with a great idea" is all that's needed to give the genre a revival by inspiring everyone to "do it again".He told Variety: "These things kind of swing back and forth."If someone made something as funny as ‘The Hangover’ right now, it would make a billion dollars, and everyone would be trying to do that."It ebbs and it flows, and hopefully it’ll flow soon.”Apatow also dismissed the idea that political correctness makes comedy harder than it was in the past.He said: "I don't think there's a content obstacle.

Love, laughs, and labor pains — these movies prove pregnancy is the ultimate plot twist.
I watched the new Amy Schumer comedy,“Kinda Pregnant” with my wife last night and it was (on the whole) a good time. First, it’s actually funny and second, it pays off the high concept in all the ways you want it to (more on this shortly). I love romantic comedies, and so it got me thinking about all the other rom-com pregnancy movies out there. Not that many get made (Hollywood is a male-dominated industry), but there are some excellent movies among the ones that did. Here’s my list of the top 7 pregnancy rom-coms you can stream right now.

Seth Rogen is weighing in on his friendship with James Franco after his former friend revealed their relationship had ended.
In a new interview, Apple TV+’s The Studio star said he doesn’t pay much attention to social media buzz around him.
“Honestly, I absorb so little media that it really wasn’t on my radar,” Rogen told Esquire about Franco’s comments on their friendship.
According to the publication, Rogen was “not surprised to get that question, and he’s clearly not happy about it.” The magazine also noted his response was “all he wants to say about that.”
Rogen and Franco got their start in the business by starring on the NBC series Freaks and Geeks. They would go on to star in films like Knocked Up, Pineapple Express, This Is The End, The Interview, Sausage Party and The Disaster Artist.

Judd Apatow took aim at President Donald Trump, Jeff Bezos, the “It Ends With Us” litigation spree and himself in his opening monologue Saturday at the 77th annual DGA Awards.
Apatow, of course, riffed on how the country has taken a sharp turn to the right since the last DGA Awards, and he gently poked fun at Hollywood for its eager embrace of diversity and boundary-pushing issues that are now in the crosshairs of President Donald Trump and his far-right brigade of reformers.
“My new pronouns are ‘We’re fucked,’ ” Apatow said from the stage of the Beverly Hilton. The multihyphenate filmmaker and TV producer hosted the DGA Awards for the third year in a row, and the sixth time since 2018.
Commenting on how many rich and powerful figures have worked to curry favor with Trump, Apatow cracked, “I feel like I’m one compliment away from being Secretary of the Interior.

Jason Segel is best known for his role as the adorable boyfriend Marshall Eriksen in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. While he has been a household name because of the show, he finally got his feature film breakthrough with the comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall (last name not related to Himym). He also wrote the script for the film.
One of the most iconic scenes in the comedy is his fully frontal n*de scene at the beginning of the film. Segel’s scene reportedly caught the attention of actor Harrison Ford when he was offered the role in Shrinking. Ford mentioned that he even sent Segel a note after watching his n*de scene in the film.

Comedy filmmakers love a big lie. From Fargo to Tootsie to Overboard to Mrs. Doubtfire, the genre is packed with stories about a beleaguered protagonist coming up with an outlandish claim that quickly grows beyond their control. So Kinda Pregnant, out today on Netflix, is joining a long tradition: Lainy (Amy Schumer) is mistaken for a pregnant woman, decides to run with it, then makes a new friend and has to keep up the ruse. Schumer, who co-wrote the screenplay, is known for her joke-dense stand-up sets and for sexually frank movies like Trainwreck. The film has been released under Adam Sandler’s banner, Happy Madison, home of such past hits as, well, Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. So when you hear that Sandler and Schumer have teamed up on a comedy about pregnancy, you might get a particular picture of what it’s going to be like. But here...

A Dwayne Johnsonaction movie that grossed $428 million is getting a new streaming home. Decades after making his WWE debut, Johnson is now one of the most recognizable movie stars on the planet. Following his jump to acting, Johnson appeared in a number of action movies, like The Rundown (2003), Faster (2010), Fast Five (2011), Snitch (2013), and Pain & Gain (2013). More recently, Johnson has embraced more family-friendly fare, but that doesn't mean he's left his action roots behind.
The mid and late 2010s saw the release of a handful of classic Johnson action movies, but the budgets got larger and they became action blockbusters instead of genre movies in the mid-budget space, reflecting the actor's growing star power. In addition to several Fast & Furious movies, Johnson starred in San Andreas in 2015 before going on to have a big year in 2018, starring in two buzzy titles. From ‘Superbad’ to ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin,’ these Apatow hits still hold up.
One of the big reasons I wanted to get into writing movies is because of Judd Apatow. His comedies are more than just funny – they’re heartfelt and genuine, with imperfect characters doing their best to get on with it. He helped popularize the “antihero” protagonist (Seth Rogan is a good example). Someone who’s not the brightest, not the most attractive, but their heart is in the right place… and they sure are funny. Seth Rogen is one of the more unique comedic actors out there right now. Unlike some professional goofballs, Rogen's career has also included some significant dramatic works. This has included, for example, serious roles in The Fabelmans and Steve Jobs. While he still brings his characteristic humor to all his roles, parts in dramatic films show his range. Rogen is also experienced both in front of the camera and behind-the-scenes, serving as a producer on a number of key projects including The Boys and Invincible.
A lot of his dual behind-the-scenes and in-front-of-the-camera work extends to his comedy rolls. In both late 2000s movies Superbad and Pineapple Express, for example, Rogen both stars in and produces the film in some capacity. The same is true for other Rogen-featuring comedies including The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Funny People, The Green Hornet, and 50/50. The Griswold family’s patriarch and matriarch, Clark and Ellen, were consistently played by Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo across the whole franchise — even in the 2015 reboot, two decades after the last movie — but the kids were always replaced with new cast members in each subsequent sequel. It practically became a running joke throughout the series that Clark and Ellen’s kids looked totally different and aged inconsistently from movie to movie.
Part of the reason for casting new actors as Rusty and Audrey in the National Lampoon’s Vacation movies is that child actors age a lot faster than their adult co-stars. Whereas Chase and D’Angelo looked more or less the same in the 14 years between the original Vacation film and the fourth one, Vegas Vacation,...

The Sausage Party cast is star-studded, and thanks to the wide range of celebrity cameos playing foul-mouthed food items Seth Rogen's animated comedy remains as popular as ever. The raunchy comedy Sausage Party was not what anyone expected, an adult-animated movie about anthropomorphic food in a grocery store that believes that when they are bought, they will go to a better place where everything will be perfect. However, when one food item is returned and knows the truth, it turns the entire store upside down.
The cast of Sausage Party cast includes some of the biggest names in comedy movies. Many of them got their start together in Judd Apatow's movies and TV shows. What's more, the raunchy animated movie features many frequent collaborators also worked together on several movies and TV shows both before and after the Sausage Party release in 2016. Seth Rogen takes on the role of a Hollywood executive in the first teaser for “The Studio,” but realizes that the industry is not the glitz and glam he first fell in love with.
Rogen stars as Matt Remick, the newly appointed head of embattled Continental Studios. Amidst a struggling movie business, Matt and his “core team of infighting executives” battle the changing industry, corporate higher-ups and passionate artists to continue making great films. Though it’s the job Matt has always wanted, it may be the end of the career he always dreamed of.
Rogen and Evan Goldberg co-wrote, directed and executive produced the Apple TV+ comedy, which marks their first directorial project in five years. The half-hour series, which premieres March 26, stars the “Knocked Up” actor alongside Ike Barinholtz, Kathryn Hahn and Catherine O’Hara.

Exclusive: After chronicling the BlackBerry’s rise and fall with Matt Johnson’s lauded IFC film of the same name, Jay Baruchel has come aboard to star in another true story, The Stunt Driver, a film chronicling the exploits of daredevil stuntman Ken Carter.

For many people, it won't seem possible that the year 2000 is 24 years ago, and even new time travel horror movies like Time Cut are taking audiences back to the early part of the new millennium. However, turn on your favorite radio station, and you'll be guaranteed to hear one of the most popular tunes from the 2000s. Also, walk down the street, and you'll likely see people strutting about in clothes that were first fashionable 20 years ago. The same, sadly, cannot be said about certain movies from the 2000s that barely anyone remembers or that may be better off being forgotten about.
If you can pinpoint one thing that has changed since the start of the 21st century, it's that some of these movies, no matter how popular they were at the time, have not aged well. Perhaps it's a comedy such as Bridget Jones's Diary with some gags that...

The 2007 teen comedy Superbad has an outstanding ensemble cast full of big-name stars. Most of Superbad's best quotes are from its three main characters, Seth, Evan, and Fogell aka McLovin, who are played by Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, respectively. Directed by Greg Mottola, Superbad is written by comedic partners Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen, the latter of whom plays Officer Michaels in the film. The protagonists, Seth and Evan, are loosely based on Rogen and Goldberg and their real-life experiences growing up as seniors in high school in Vancouver, Canada.
Superbad was the 21st highest-grossing movie in 2007 with a domestic total of $121.46 million. It was a breakout movie for both Hill and Cera and is widely considered a landmark film in the modern comedy genre. Superbad 2 never happened because the film's writers, director, and cast weren't on board. The raucous teen sex comedy about best friends trying to lose their virginity was directed by Greg Mottola and written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Superbad stars Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Emma Stone, Bill Hader, and Rogen. The film featured two close high school friends and a senior party that gave them one last chance to spend time together before leaving for college.
Goldberg and Rogen began crafting the script while in their teens, and it is based on real-life events that happened to Rogen and Goldberg during their senior year at their Vancouver high school in the 90s. Superbad was both a commercial and critical success, grossing over $170 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). Judd Apatow lamented the state of the entertainment industry today, saying he’s witnessed a new Hollywood model that leaves little room for more grounded storylines.
Appearing on a new episode of Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Superfly podcast, the three-time Emmy winner was asked about his thoughts on current streamer and studio approaches to the filmmaking business.
“I have a new theory, which is, everything is like in the newspaper business: ‘If it bleeds, it leads,'” Apatow explained. “Everything is doomscrolling because they don’t want you to shut anything off, so they’re obsessed with it being really intense. That’s why almost everything on the streamers is either about the biggest star in the world or a serial killer. Everything is a thriller, everything is intense.”
Carvey chimed in, adding that projects nowadays are also “hypersexual,” mentioning Nicole Kidman’s penchant for constantly appearing in...

Katherine Heigl was on the rise of popularity when she stepped into the role of Dr. Izzie Stevens in Grey’s Anatomy. This show then further pushed her to international stardom, and she became a household name, all thanks to her brilliant portrayal. But in the midst of all the success, she made headlines but for all the wrong reasons when she criticized the writers of the popular medical drama.
This criticism also did not go well with the showrunner of the show Shonda Rhimes. And in an Oprah interview she made sure to slam the actress in her own way.

Ken Jeong has always been a scene-stealer — even as a chorus member with no lines in a Duke University production of “Kiss Me Kate” when he was 18. “I still have the review in my office; it says, ‘Did I mention Ken Jeong, a puckish performer in the chorus who best watch his back if he keeps stealing scenes from the principals?’” recalls the actor. “So, I think it’s always been in my DNA.”
Jeong has never lost that playful quality as he moved from an actual doctor to stand-up comedian to film and TV doctor (“Knocked Up” and “Dr. Ken”) and into several of the most popular movies of the last 20 years. In addition, he’s managed to maintain a reputation as one of the most lovable and adored personalities on TV thanks to appearing as himself in hits like “The Masked Singer” and hosting “I Can See Your Voice.

Judd Apatow is one of the most impactful directors in the comedy genre, having helmed some of the biggest comedy blockbusters of the 2000s. As a result, it is natural for Apatow to have a sense of humor that sets him slightly apart from most directors. However, Apatow surprised everyone when he harnessed this humor to take multiple digs at none other than Tom Cruise.

Romantic comedies regularly share common tropes, themes, and the same actors in different roles, yet the two romantic comedies, also known as twin films, replicate the same storyline. Released in 2011, No Strings Attached, starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, hit theaters in January, and Friends With Benefits, starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, was released six months after No Strings Attached in July. Although these two rom-coms share an identical plot depicting the conventional friends to lovers trope, both films also include differences to somewhat distinctively set each other apart, yet one movie stood out more than the other.
No Strings Attached and Friends With Benefits explore two different friendships, as both pairs agree to a casual, physical relationship, omitting any emotional ties or serious commitments. These two romantic comedies perfectly mirror each other, depicting the same story about the complexities of navigating a non-committed relationship, yet the only minimal differences are the characters,...

Warning: Contains spoilers for Season One of Shrinking
AppleTV+’s Shrinking, which returns for its second season today, has a provocative premise: Would clients actually be better off if their therapists decided not to lead them toward the insights that would improve their lives, but rather just told them straight up what to do?
The show’s seeming position on this is somewhat inconsistent. Most patients are portrayed thriving when their unorthodox therapist Jimmy (Jason Segel) bosses them around. But Season One ends with therapy client Grace (Heidi Gardner) pushing her emotionally abusive husband off a cliff, after telling Jimmy about her fantasy of doing that, to Jimmy’s enthusiastic affirmation; he’s under the impression that she’s being hyperbolic, but still! You might think a connection to the criminal case might lead Jimmy to abandon his new proactivity; you’d be wrong.
But, all of that is beside my point,...

The impressive performances of Shrinking's star-studded cast helped the comedy become a hit series. Shrinking season 1 received a 91% critical score and an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with both critics and general audiences impressed by the series' balance between comedy and the exploration of a heartfelt story. Season 1's success led to Shrinking season 2 being greenlit, with the series becoming one of Apple TV+'s most well-regarded comedies.
Created by Jason Segel, Bill Lawrence, and Brett Goldstein, Shrinking tells the story of a therapist, Jimmy, who takes an unorthodox approach to helping his patients by telling them what he really thinks about their problems. While this leads to many comedic situations, the series also explores difficult topics and emotions, as Jimmy, his daughter, Alice, and their loved ones grapple with the death of Jimmy's wife, Tia. Disappointing news for fans of Apple TV+'s small-screen take on Time Bandits here, as the streamer has decided not to move forward with a second season.
Deadline broke the news, which comes almost a month after the 10-episode first season of the family-friendly sci-fi comedy series ended its run.
Despite mostly positive reviews, (the series earned a pretty decent 78% on Rotten Tomatoes), Time Bandits did not attract enough viewers, and even though Apple TV+ does not share viewership data, the fact that the show was unable to crack Nielsen's Top 10 streaming rankings clearly factored into the streamer's decision not to renew it for a sophomore season.
We got word that Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi and frequent collaborator Jemaine Clement were in the process of developing a reimagining of Terry Gilliam's '80s sci-fi classic back in 2022, with Friends alum Lisa Kudrow set to star.

Noting the recent trend of Ben Affleck’s “Air,” Matt Johnson’s “Blackberry,” Eva Longoria’s “Flamin’ Hot,” and, though perhaps a bit on the silly side, Jerry Seinfeld’s “Unfrosted,” there seems to be an increasing market for stories about consumer goods and marketing. Deadline announced Wednesday that the latest to get in the act are Judd Apatow and Steven Spielberg with a picture called “Cola Wars,” all about the rivalry between Coca-Cola and Pepsi.
“Cola Wars,” which Spielberg will produce and Apatow will direct, is written by Jason Shuman and Ben Queen. Shuman is best known for co-creating the series “Acapulco” on Apple TV + and was an executive producer on “Winning Time,” another nostalgia-soaked based-on-reality project about the peak years of the Los Angeles Lakers. Queen’s credits include “Cars 2” and “Cars 3.” The project is set up at Sony.

Judd Apatow directs, Steven Spielberg produces, as Sony moves ahead with Cola Wars, a movie about Coca Cola and Pepsi’s battle.
Just recently, we covered a report which looked at how Judd Apatow, the one-time king of Hollywood comedies, was struggling to get original projects off the ground. It’s been a few years since Apatow’s period as a director and ‘super-producer’, during which he shepherded lots of popular comedies through the studio system.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has selected Apatow to direct Cola Wars. It’s a drama that will recount the fierce battle between industry titan Coca Cola and upstart Pepsi in the 1980s.
We first learned of the project back in February, along with the claim that Sony had paid more than a million dollars for a pitch. Not the script mind, just the pitch. Jason Shuman and Ben Queen will be drafting the screenplay.

Progress on Cola Wars is bubbling up, as the Sony Pictures feature has attached Judd Apatow to direct with Steven Spielberg to produce, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Apatow is set to helm the film that is still in its initial stages of development after the studio bought a pitch for the project earlier this year. Cola Wars is set to focus on the battle for soda supremacy that kicked off in the mid-1980s as Pepsi aimed to challenge Coke’s longtime dominance in the soft drink space.
Jason Shuman and Ben Queen are working on the script. Spielberg is producing Cola Wars through his company Amblin Entertainment, with Maia Eyre overseeing the film for Sony.
Shuman co-created the Apple TV+ series Acapulco and served as an executive producer on the HBO show Winning Time. Queen earned credits for his writing work on the animated sequel The Addams Family 2...

We’re guessing Judd Apatow isn’t a Dr. Pepper fan. The “Knocked Up” filmmaker is attached to direct “Cola Wars,” a film about the battle for market share between Coca Cola and Pepsi to become America’s favorite soda, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.
Tag-teaming with him on the project is none other than Steven Spielberg, who will produce the film through his Amblin Entertainment production banner.
The individual adds that at this point, “Cola Wars” is in very early development stages, with Apatow and Spielberg joining based on a pitch that Sony acquired back in April.
The writers for the film are Ben Queen and Jason Shuman, who co-created and writes the Apple TV+ series “Acapulco” and was also a producer on the canceled HBO series “Winning Time.”
Few other details are available at this early stage of development, but Deadline, which first reported the news,...
