A supermoon triggers a latent gene, transforming anyone and everyone whose skin touches moonlight into a feral beast in Steven C. Miller’s (Silent Night) Werewolves. That premise alone highlights the scope of ambition and challenges for an independent action-horror feature: Frank Grillo fighting his way through hordes of werewolves requires a lot of stunt and creature work. Luckily, Werewolves boasts a lot of talent on screen and off in delivering just that, including SFX legend and werewolf designer/effects creator Alec Gillis of Studio Gillis.
Gillis’ expansive career has given horror fans no shortage of cherished movie monsters, from the Aliens to Predator to the eerie monster in Smile and Smile 2. Yet despite such an impressive career, Werewolves marks a major first for the artist. “Technically, it’s my first werewolf. Although,” Gillis points to a mask in his office when speaking with Bloody Disgusting via Zoom, “this...

John Boyega wants to discuss the good book with you. Which book am I talking about? The Book of Eli, of course! Whispers around the watercooler imply that Boyega is prepping a prequel series based on 2010’s The Book of Eli. According to Deadline, Boyega will play a younger version of Eli, the character played by Denzel Washington in the Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes-directed film. Adding authenticity to the project is The Book of Eli writer Gary Whitta, who will create/write/executive produce the upcoming prequel series. The Book of Eli prequel series comes from Alcon Entertainment. They’ll bring the show to market to land a premium streaming venue.
In The Book of Eli, a drifter fights across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic America while protecting a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity’s salvation. The story takes place 30 years after a nuclear catastrophe resulting in an ecocide.

Alexander Skarsgard of Succession, The Legend of Tarzan, and The Northman is set to star in the ten-episode sci-fi series Murderbot, which has just been picked up by Apple TV+. Despite sharing a title with a recently released movie from Full Moon and director Jim Wynorski, this project is actually based on Martha Wells’ bestselling, Hugo and Nebula Award-winning book series The Murderbot Diaries.
The sibling duo of Chris and Paul Weitz (About a Boy) are writing, directing, and executive producing Murderbot under their Depth of Field banner. Andrew Miano is also executive producing for Depth of Field, while David S. Goyer executive produces alongside Keith Levine for Phantom Four. Wells is on board as consulting producer.

When Josh Hutcherson was cast in "Five Nights at Freddy's," it just made sense. Director and co-writer Emma Tammi's film adaptation of the lore-heavy hit horror video game franchise has the actor playing Mike Schmidt, an Average Joe who takes a job as the night security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, unaware of that tiny issue where the entertainment center's animatronic mascots come to life and begin massacring people after midnight. Mike himself is the type of archetypical hero Hutcherson is best known for portraying; a humble everyman who must rise to the occasion in the face of extraordinary circumstances.
In a way, Hutcherson's unlikely transformation into one of this century's major genre movie and TV actors began with his first feature film, "American Splendor." One of the best comic book adaptations ever made, the film carries over the meta-narrative and autobiographical elements of Harvey Pekar's source material,...

Ray Stevenson, a versatile actor known for genre fare such as Punisher: War Zone, the Thor movies, HBO’s Rome and much, much more, has died. He was 58.
Born George Raymond Stevenson on May 25, 1964, in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, he harbored acting ambitions from an early age. He enrolled at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, from where he eventually obtained his graduate degree.
From there, he kicked off a career in British and European TV, starting with 1993’s A Woman’s Guide To Adultery, in which he had a small role as a journalist. He racked up credits in a number of TV series well known to audiences, including Peak Practice, Holby City and The Bill.
But on the small screen, his true big break was HBO’s Rome, in which he played the cheery, violent Titus Pollo. It raised his profile, and he began to score bigger parts both on TV and the big screen.

Set sometime in the 1950s, Monstrous opens as Laura puts her son Cody in the back seat of the car and hits the road for California as “See You Later Alligator” plays on the soundtrack.
She’s leaving Arizona and an abusive ex-husband behind and plans to start over in a safer environment for her and her son. She’s rented a beautiful house by a large pond from Mr. and Mrs. and a job working for Mr. Alonzo.
But this sunny bit of nostalgia is about to turn much darker. Cody is convinced a monster from the lake is stalking them. He also misses home, and despite the reasons for their leaving, his father. Speaking of whom, he’s gotten Laura’s phone number and begins calling.

Though the summer movie season is winding down (if it ever really started this year), Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for September 2021 is chock full of worthwhile movie options.
For starters, Amazon’s library movie titles are quite good this month. September 1 sees the arrivals of heavyweights such as Apollo 13, Arachnophobia, Romeo + Juliet, The Descent, and The Social Network. And if that weren’t enough, the streamer is trying out some intriguing original movies as well. Cinderella, a modern update on the classic fairy tale, premieres on September 3. That will be followed by “exotic thriller” The Voyeurs (Sept. 10), musical adaptation Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (Sept. 17), and French thriller The Mad Woman’s Ball (Sept. 17).

“Darren Shan was an average kid until destiny brought him to the Cirque Du Freak. Now Darren’s immersed in a shadowy world inhabited by vampires, werewolves, and strange creatures the likes of which he’s never imagined, and his life will never be the same! Discover the manga adaptation of internationally acclaimed author Darren Shan’s Cirque Du Freak, here in a new oversize, deluxe omnibus format!” (Yen Press)
The new horror-lite series, collected in omnibus form and published by Yen Press, adapts the YA series of the same name from Darren Shan. Taking lead from the source material, the manga adaptation leads with an art style that both captures childlike wonderment and fascination with the macabre.
Takahiro Arai’s approach favours a classical approach in using rounded figures over sharp lines, resulting in a style reflective of 80’s manga. A perfect combination given the story...

The Vampire Diaries Universe, consisting of The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and Legacies, have added to the world's extensive history and background. Based on the book series of the same name, the first series told the story of Elena Gilbert and the Salvatore brothers, Stefan and Damon. Throughout three shows, the main characters have had adventures and proved the extent of vampires' powers. However, The Vampire Diaries Universe is just one in a long line of vampire-related television shows, films, and books. Different stories hold separate perspectives on vampires, their abilities, and how to represent them.

Even if you're not a big reader of young adult fiction, you may have seen the advertisements for the new Chloë Grace Moretz movie The 5th Wave and suspected that it looks like the kind of movie that was adapted from a Ya franchise. All the elements are there: a post-apocalyptic dystopia, a winsome female protagonist who stands up to become the world's champion, an imperiled younger sibling and the winning combination of light science fiction and teenaged angst. The 5th Wave is the first in a trilogy of books by Rick Yancey about a group of underage rebels fighting off an alien invasion.

Diving into the genre of young-adult film adaptations is a dangerous proposition these days. "Harry Potter" and "The Hunger Games" are two of the biggest film franchises there are and cross all demographics. "Twilight" is more female-oriented and less critically acclaimed, but is also a box-office juggernaut. Even though this year's "Divergent" may not be on the same level, only an idiot wouldn't call it a hit with major potential.
Yet there have been numerous bodies left in their wake. "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," "Beautiful Creatures," "The Golden Compass," "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant," "I Am Number Four," "The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising," "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events," "City of Ember," "Stormbreaker," "The Spiderwick Chronicles" and more.

Thanks to its strong brand and broadly-appealing marketing, The Lego Movie stacked up one of the highest openings ever for an original animated movie this weekend. The Monuments Men also had a solid debut, while Vampire Academy was the latest young-adult debacle. The Lego Movie took first place with $69.05 million, which ranks second all-time in the month of February behind The Passion of the Christ ($83.8 million). That fantastic debut is among the best-ever for an "original" (i.e. not a sequel or prequel) animated movie ever along with Up ($68.1 million), Dr. Seuss' The Lorax ($70.2 million) and The Incredibles ($70.5 million). For reference, the current record-holder is The Simpsons Movie with $74 million. The Lego Movie's success can be attributed to a handful of factors. The brand itself is remarkably strong: most people have some experience with the tiny building blocks, and that experience is generally positive. Warner Bros. built on...

Update: Universal Pictures announced late Thursday afternoon that Colin Trevorrow would direct “Jurassic Park 4,” ending months of speculation about who would helm the third sequel to 1993's blockbuster “Jurassic Park.” Trevorrow is a relative Hollywood newcomer, having directed only one other film previously, 2012's “Safety Not Guaranteed,” for which he was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature. That film featured a science fiction-esque time travel plot, which bodes well for how Trevorrow might handle the genetically-engineered dinosaurs at the heart of the “Jurassic Park” franchise. Below, you can check out what else we currently know about the upcoming sequel, including the now debunked rumors that Steven Spielberg would direct. Earlier: Ever since Steven Spielberg announced plans for “Jurassic Park 4” at Comic-Con in 2011, the lack of concrete details about the film led some to speculate that the project was extinct. But with a release date finally announced...

Sacha Baron Cohen brings his trademark ridicu-shock humor to his new film "The Dictator," but it may be his beard that steals the show.
He plays Admiral General Aladeen, deposed dictator of the (fictional) Republic of Wadiya, who flees to the U.S. when his country converts to democracy. As a dictator, he's used to ruling with an iron fist, an incorrigible sense of righteous cruelty, and a thick, bushy beard that could house several terrified baby sparrows.
Aladeen may feel like a fish out of water in New York City, but he'd feel right at home among Hollywood's most magnificent beards of all time. Here's our ode to the greatest facial hair in movies, in 15 parts.

Tina Fey and Paul Rudd will topline Admission about the life of a Princeton admissions counselor. The admissions counselor (Fey) decides she needs to shake up her boring life and two things happen: one is when she meets an attractive potential student who is not really Princeton material (Nat Wolff of "The Naked Brothers Band") and another is when she starts crushing on a former classmate and teacher at an alternative high school (Rudd). One big problem is that she already has a boyfriend Michael Sheen (The Twilight Saga movies). Gloria Reuben ("ER") plays another admissions counselor trying to get Fey's job. Lily Tomlin (The Pink Panther 2, "The Magic School Bus") and Wallace Shawn (The Princess Bride, Toy Story movies) also costar in the comedy. Paul Weitz (Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant) is directing from a script by Karen Croner for Focus Features.

Predictable has never been an adjective you could use to describe Paul Weitz. After cutting his teeth on the sex comedy "American Pie," the helmer explored different genre paths, tackling dramedy ("About A Boy," "In Good Company"), satire ("American Dreamz") and fantasy ("Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant"). And this spring, he'll deliver what is arguably his most dramatic film yet in "Being Flynn," starring Paul Dano and Robert De Niro. We recently got a chance to chat with Weitz, and as usual, the projects on his upcoming slate are as diverse as they come. About a year ago, word emerged that Weitz was lined up to direct "Admission," based on the book by Jean Hanff Korelitz. Tina Fey was said to be eyeing the lead role of Portia Nathan, a Princeton admissions officer whose (non-sexual/romantic) relationship with a 17-year-old prospect causes discord with her live-in partner Mark, an English.

New mysterious human arriving in ep 11 & more in this new Vampire Diaries season 3 spoiler. Hey Vd fans we just got a new, spoiler scoop from Spoiler TV. Apparently, Vampire Diaries is bringing on a new, mysterious human named Darren Warren in episode 11. I say, mysterious, because there is no damn info on the net about what he will be doing on the show. Hell, the only reason why we know he's on the show,is because it appeared in his IMDb acting credits. I was barely able to find out that he was human. Luckily, Vampirediaries wikia gave us,at least, that much. Your guess is as good as mine as to what he will be doing. Maybe he'll just be more snacks for Klaus or the other vampires, which,I think, is highly likely since there wasn't a big deal made about his appearance. Hey, but who knows, he...

The first trailer for Robert De Niro's new movie, Being Flynn, is now online. It's based on poet and playwright Nick Flynn's 2004 memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, in which he chronicles his unexpected reunion with his estranged alcoholic father at a homeless shelter in Boston.
Being Flynn marks a return to more dramatic material for writer-director Paul Weitz, who earned an Academy Award nomination for his 2002 dramedy adaptation About a Boy, but then subsequently strayed into parody (American Dreamz), fantasy (Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant), and comedy (Little Fockers, also with De Niro). The movie does not yet have a release date, but it is aimed at a Spring 2012 opening.

Before this weekend, Kevin Smith was always known as a comedy guy. "Clerks," "Chasing Amy," "Zack and Miri Make a Porno," plus his Smodcast podcast and Q&A-slash-stand-up films like "An Evening With Kevin Smith." He stretched himself a little into drama, animation, and acting, but until his new film "Red State" -- available now on VOD -- the scariest thing Kevin Smith had ever directed was "Jersey Girl" (I kid).
The transition from comedy to horror is rarely an easy one for directors. Few guys as entrenched in the comedy genre as Smith have ever tried to break out of it, and even fewer have made their break successfully. Here are five interesting -- and very different -- examples of horror movies made by guys we'd typically classify as comedy directors. We'll get to see soon enough how Smith's big move compares with theirs.

In our current multimedia renaissance, Michael Cerveris is the perfect renaissance man – having starred in Broadway plays, Hollywood films and network TV shows. He's also recorded music, taught at schools, and, as I type this, is probably writing a cookbook while training for a side career as a professional luger. Like a lot of horror fans, I first noticed Cerveris when he starred opposite Patti LuPone in the recent Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd (which, for my money, will remain the definitive Sweeney Todd). And it's been fun to watch him further explore his admitted love of the weird and macabre in Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, this month's Stake Land (in which he plays a vampire cult leader),...

Tremors? Nightbreed? Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat? 976-evil? Are all on the list this year. And though there were not huge horror wins in sound editing through screenplays, the Technical Awards never cease to bring out the horror veterans. Notably Tim Drnec who contributed to such VHS classics as Alien Seed, Destroyer, and Prison won for his work on “Spydercam 3D volumetric suspended cable camera technologies.” An award also shared with Ben Britten Smith and Matt Davis who both also worked on Constantine.

Joseph Kahn is no slouch. His new school-based slasher project 'Detention' will premiere this March at the SXSW in Texas and to celebrate his speedy turnaround the first offical still from the movie has arrived online. It features young cast members and obvious slasher fodder Josh Hutcherson ('Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant'), Shanley Caswell, cutie Spencer Locke ('Resident Evil: Extinction') and Aaron David Johnson. Kahn co-scripted 'Detention' with Mark Palermo and, as you may remember, will feature a serial killer by the name of Cinderhella. Not-so-funnyman Dane Cook also stars. Check out the synopsis along with the new still and a pic of Cinderhella below....

Summit Entertainment, the teen-centric studio that is the home of Twilight, has acquired the feature film rights for the soon-to-be-published novel "A Night Circus." Variety describes the story as "two young illusionists battling out their fathers' age-old rivalry amidst an enchanted circus, bound by a fated love, and destined to affect the lives of all around them."
This is at least the third circus-themed movie over the last couple of years. Summit's biggest star, Robert Pattinson, is in 20th Century Fox's upcoming Water for Elephants which takes place at a circus (hits theaters April 15). 2009's Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant was a tween and teen-targeted film that revolved around a circus.

With Halloween falling on a Sunday, you've got three nights to really freak yourself out with some scary movies. KidsPickFlicks top contributors shared their Picks for scariest movies you should watch:
1. The Sixth Sense. While most critics would argue that the ending of the movie was too predictable, I would argue tha the ending is far from what the movie is about. The Sixth Sense is where the popular, yet now sadly overused quote "I see dead people" comes from. It combines an emotional tale with some awesome scenes of horror action. Great acting, writing and directing make this movie what it is, not the "big shock"...which, I dare say, isn't even half bad. -- Miranda R., Age 12
2. Frankenstein (1931). The most universal Frankenstein look and appeal came with the 1931 version of Frankenstein starring Boris Karloff. Also, it has phenomenal acting and suspense. -- Cole the Kid Critic, Age 16
3. Coraline.

The Social Network was popular, though the box office wasn't as atwitter with the Facebook drama as the hype, while two horror movies about scary children, Case 39 and Let Me In, were ignored. Overall business was down 12 percent from the same weekend last year when Zombieland debuted. Handily topping the weekend, The Social Network posted $22.4 million on approximately 3,800 screens at 2,771 locations, which was solid for a biographical or topical drama. That was greater than Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps's $19 million launch last weekend, though it didn't score as highly as 21 ($24.1 million) among comparable titles. Given its behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the Facebook phenomenon, Social Network naturally received a lot of media coverage, but its marketing campaign didn't rest on that, aggressively selling the picture as the dramatic, generation-defining rise of the world's youngest billionaire ("You don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies"). Distributor...

On Friday, The Social Network was popular, though the box office wasn't quite atwitter with the Facebook drama, while two horror movies about scary children, Let Me In and Case 39, were ignored. Overall business was down from the same Friday last year when Zombieland debuted. The Social Network logged a solid estimated $8 million on approximately 3,800 screens at 2,771 locations. That was greater than Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps's $6.9 million launch last Friday, though it didn't score as highly as 21 among comparable titles. Let Me In nabbed an anemic estimated $1.9 million on around 2,200 screens at 2,021 locations, which was weak by vampire movie standards and even less than Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant from last October. Case 39 claimed a scant estimated $1.8 million at 2,211 locations, which was near the bottom of the supernatural horror subgenre and in the same range as The Haunting of Molly Hartley and The Return. Hollywood has repeatedly peddled the apocalyptic threat from aliens, machines, comets, viruses and zombies, but who was watching the vampires?
Never exactly absent from the entertainment scene, those eternal bloodsuckers lately have infiltrated everything from big screens and little screens to bookstore shelves, clothing racks, download services, video games and video, record and jewelry stores.
Just this week, the Fox/New Regency "Twilight" parody "Vampires Suck" grossed $20 million, and 5 million regular viewers are rabidly following HBO's newest hit, "True Blood," as it swoops toward its season 3 finale Sept. 12. Meanwhile, Justin Cronin's "The Passage," Stephenie Meyer's "Breaking Dawn" and Charlaine Harris' "Dead and Gone" hover on best-seller lists.
These charming, deadly immortals are everywhere. And as a result, they're spilling as much green as red -- about $7 billion since the "Twilight" film franchise bowed less than two years ago, according to THR estimates.

Josh Hutcherson, that guy from Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant and Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, is set to star in Detention, according to Variety.
Directed by Joseph Kahn, best known for his music videos for stars such as Eminem and Britney Spears rather than his feature films, Detention will also star Dane Cook (My Best Friend's Girl), an actor that is invariably like Marmite (I hate Marmite).
The film, with a budget of $10 million, is a teen horror-comedy about a group of teenagers struggling through their final year of high school, but have a lot to contend with in the form of a slasher-movie killer who has seemingly come to life. It is said to contain a mixture of Scream, Back To The Future and John Hughes-like elements... so quite a terrifying blend of themes if one thinks about how they could all come together!

Columbia Pictures has announced the lead in Marc Webb's younged-down version of Spider-Man and it is Andrew Garfield.
Yeah, I had to look him up, too.
Garfield, who is almost 27 years old and from England, will play the Queens, New York high school student who receives powers from a radioactive spider bite and fights crime. The actor's previous credits include two very heavy films, the British drama Boy A and Robert Redford's military flop Lions for Lambs, as well as Terry Gilliam's dreadful The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.. He also starred in the celebrated Red Riding Trilogy and has two prestige pictures in the hopper. One is the David Fincher/Aaron Sorkin "Facebook movie" The Social Network, and the other is the "smart people's The Island," Mark Romanek's adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go.
I'm not going to lie to you. I don't remember him in Doctor Parnassus.

The Search for the next Peter Parker in the relaunch of the Spider-Man franchise has reportedly narrowed to eight actors.
According to Deadline, six of these candidates screen-tested for the role on Friday. They are: Billy Elliot star Jamie Bell, Star Trek's Anton Yelchin, Kick-Ass's Aaron Johnson, Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson and the The Lightning Thief) and Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro).
The other two actors on the shortlist are said to be Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince) and Michael Angarano (Lords of Dogtown).
Angarano was linked to the Peter Parker role in online rumours back in 2008. Dillane (pictured) may apparently end up ruling himself out with his plans to attend London's Rada (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art). An announcement on which actor has been chosen is said to be expected very soon.

Let me start by saying that I had no problem with the first Meet the Parents flick. At the time, pitting Robert DeNiro as the tough guy dad against Ben Stiller, the hapless young man marrying his daughter, was somewhat inspired (though admittedly, it probably owed a lot to Analyze This). Then came the sequel, Meet the Fockers, which simply upped the shock factor and ran the same jokes into the ground. Now the cast is back for one last hurrah, a movie called Little Fockers, which finds Greg and Pam with two kids and a third one on the way. And Jack still doesn't trust Greg. This week the first trailer has arrived online, and I gotta say, it's looking pretty clear that they should have just left this alone. Despite the the addition of Laura Dern, Harvey Keitel and Jessica Alba, they're really grasping at straws. Even Jay Roach...

Are you sick of the same set of young actors dominating the conversation? They're not the most talented ones, certainly. They're the ones associated with the largest franchises: Twilight, High School Musical or Harry Potter and yet few those actors -- Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Daniel Radcliffe, Ruper Grint, Emma Watson, Zac Efron, etc. -- has deftly demonstrated an ability to stand on their own outside of the franchises with which they are associated. And then there's the the tabloid stars: Miley Cyrus, Megan Fox, the cast of "the Hills," Zac Efron and that lot, not to mention the bland but pretty, like Blake Lively, Minka Kelly or Gemma Arteron or Hayden Panettiere.
But what about the actors with actual talent? The ones that aren't spoken of as often, but the ones likely to survive the longest. Today, I want to take a gander at the 10 Most Promising Actors 25 and...

It's hard to think of the stunningly beautiful actress Salma Hayek having even a tiny physical flaw. After all, the Mexican-born beauty has been on People magazine's Most Beautiful people list more than once. She's been named Glamour magazine's Woman of the Year (2001). And a 2007 poll ranked her the sexiest celebrity (out of a possible pool of 3,000 famous men and women).
But the Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant star recently spoke out about a beauty problem she brought on herself - her mustache.
In 2001, Hayek produced and starred in the film Frida about the legendary artist Frida Kahlo. Feeling she would be able to accurately recreate the character's signature look with fake facial hair, Hayek actually started shaving her upper lip.
Now she says, she constantly has to wax her upper lip to keep the thick, dark, bristly hairs away. That seems...

After a casting search that was considerably less frantic than the battle to fill the title role, Marvel has chosen Hayley Atwell to play love interest Peggy Carter in The First Avenger: Captain America.

Sources for IESB.Net have been busy beavers today in the comic book-to-film world genre with potential scoops on three adaptations currently in the works.
Spider-Man 4
Josh Hutcherson ("Journey to the Center of the Earth," "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant") has apparently joined the short list of contenders for Sony's upcoming "Spider-Man" reboot.
The Green Hornet
The site claims Sony Pictures are apparently "displeased with the results" they've seen so far of Michel Gondry's "The Green Hornet" film adaptation.
A source claims the "tone is too campy, they're not happy with the work from director Michel Gondry and Seth Rogen does not look the part. At all. In fact, the feeling at Sony is the movie is a disaster." Strong words.
Not surprisingly a Sony spokesman has come back to Indiewiredismissing the report at "complete garbage" and having seen one-third of the film thus far what's on offer "is outstanding.
