Toronto-based Syndicado Film Sales has picked up international rights to “Petroleo,” the fiction debut of doc Spanish filmmaker Álvaro F. Pulpeiro, lauded worldwide for his sensory and lyrical filmmaking, most recently displayed in the Cph:Dox-selected “So Foul a Sky.”
The Galician-born filmmaker said the project which was significantly influenced by Pier Paolo Pasolini’s unfinished book “Petrolio,” will draw inspiration “from Michelangelo Antonioni’s “The Passenger” (1975), the visual intensity of “Apocalypse Now” (1979) and the digital noir of “Miami Vice” (2006).”
“Petroleo” will compete for the €30,000 Filmin Award for best title in the Film to Come section at the inaugural Ecam Forum co-production market, unspooling June 10-14 in Madrid.
Aleksandar Govedarica, Syndicado Film Sales’ CEO said: “I had the privilege of working with Álvaro on his previous film [“So Foul a Sky”] and I was captivated by his vision and storytelling; we therefore boarded “Petroleo” back in 2022. It’s a project that’s impossible to ignore in its timeliness.

Because one "Vice" apparently wasn't enough for filmmaker Michael Mann, he's returning to direct the pilot episode of upcoming HBO Max series "Tokyo Vice" after a relatively lengthy hiatus. The last we saw of the esteemed director, he had released "Blackhat" back in 2015 ... which practically feels like a lifetime ago, doesn't it?
Aside from a stray producing credit for James Mangold's "Ford v Ferrari" and his currently in-development Enzo Ferrari project, it's mostly been radio silence ever since for the director of movies like "Heat," "The Insider," and the increasingly popular "Miami Vice." That's set to change with "Tokyo Vice," which brings Mann to the small screen for one...

The Fast and the Furious star is teaming with Mudbound writer Virgil Williams for a boxing drama over at NBC.
THR reports that the drama, titled Crushers Club will be an hourlong show about a struggling boxing gym, which also serves as a second home for kids in one of Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods.
Williams will write the script and executive produce with Diesel through his One Race Television banner. Williams previously worked for six seasons as a writer-producer on Criminal Minds. He is also the co-writer on the upcoming Netflix film Mudbound, which many expect to be an awards season contender.

A reboot of the classic 80s action series Miami Vice is currently in development at NBC. Some of you might be happy to learn that the same team behind the Fast and Furious franchise, including Vin Diesel and screenwriter Chris Morgan, are developing the series as Executive Producers.
I enjoyed watching Miami Vice when I was a kid. It was a fun series that starred Don Johnson as James “Sonny” Crockett and it had a pretty solid run from 1984 to 1990. Throughout the course of its run, the series also featured actors like Edward James Olmos, Gene Simmons, Pam Grier, Laurence Fishburne, Viggo Mortensen, and John Leguizamo.
There was also a feature film directed by Michael Mann in 2006 with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. I wasn’t a big fan of that flick as it was fairly boring and very forgettable, which was a shame because I think Michael Mann is a great director.

The reboot is being brought to us by Vin Diesel's production company, One Race Television, and Chris Morgan productions. Morgan has penned six of the Fast & Furious movies. Considering the Fast & Furious franchise started with a cop and 2 Fast 2 Furious took place in Miami, it's not a bad fit.

The thought process behind reboots in Hollywood isn’t that complicated. It usually involves using A Property That People Recognize, throwing some writers and talent at it, and then dressing it up in contemporary clothing. It has little to do with honoring the source material, but simply trotting out a familiar name in a new coat of paint. So, here we go again with “Miami Vice,” though this time it comes with a bit of star power attached.

Never before in cinema have two men in expensive suits talking on cellphones on a downtown rooftop looked so beautiful. Perhaps never again. Michael Mann's gloriously expensive 2006 up-scaling of the quasi-camp TV show Miami Vice (on which he served as producer for five seasons) landed in the middle of the director's radical experiments with digital cinematography. If the 1980s series is remembered for its white suits, pastel shirts, and fast cars in the Florida sunshine, the film is remarkable for its twinkling twilight skyline and coral coloured clouds uniquely rendered with digital noise. Mann (and ace cinematographer Dion Beebe) initially dipped their lenses into the high-gain/high-grain look of digital video with 2003's Collateral. After his definitive crime drama Heat did such a superb job using the cities locations...

There's a great moment in the new History channel miniseries, America's War on Drugs, when a former DEA agent named Celerino Castillo explains why America's crusade to purge drugs from the world is doomed to fail: "America is more addicted to drug money than they are addicted to drugs."
After risking his life going undercover in the 1980s, Castillo had been disillusioned – quite a few different times – to discover that the CIA couldn't care less about stemming the flow of cocaine from Latin America. In fact, the agency ignored the Contras' drug smuggling.

The actress and mom of two surprised her parents, Mark and Elvira Kunis, with a makeover of their Los Angeles condo.
“They’ve done so many things for my brother and I,” says Kunis, 33, in the latest episode of the online series My Houzz. “And so I desperately want to give them something that I think they deserve.”

With the respected directors making their way to television, the medium is now luring Michael Mann back into its warming embrace. The Heat director, who cut his teeth on TV shows like Starsky and Hutch, Police Story, and Miami Vice, has, along with producer Michael De Luca, snapped up the rights to Black Hawk Down author Mark Bowden’s Hue 1968: A Turning Point of the American War in Vietnam.
Deadline reports that Mann and De Luca will shape Bowden’s book into an an eight-to ten-hour miniseries event, with Mann directing “numerous episodes.” Hue 1968 focuses on the Tet Offensive that became a major turning point of American involvement in the Vietnam War, and one can see the Amazon synopsis below.
By January 1968, despite an influx of half a million American troops, the fighting in Vietnam seemed to be at a stalemate. Yet General William Westmoreland, commander of American forces,...

Today, Michael Mann is predominately associated with the big screen — indeed, few filmmakers make movies quite as big and cinematic as things like “The Last Of The Mohicans,” “Heat,” “Public Enemies” and yes, our beloved “Blackhat” (you’ll learn to like it one day, fools). But the director made his name in TV, initially writing on “Starsky & Hutch” before creating the acclaimed “Police Story,” and helping to shepherd the iconic “Miami Vice” and the less well known, but highly influential “Crime Story.

Mulholland Dr. is getting a well-deserved re-release and that brings with it an opportunity to reflect again on its particular charms, including its complex, elliptical structure.
Mulholland may well be David Lynch’s masterpiece, though plenty will argue the same for Blue Velvet, Lost Highway, Eraserhead, The Elephant Man or Inland Empire. The Elephant Man is definitely the most conventional and therefore the most readily accessible of his films, but there remains a particular satisfaction in getting to grips with Mulholland’s structure and thereby arguably getting more out of it than something with a more traditional through-line.
For the uninitiated (for shame!), Mulholland Dr. is about (as much as it is really about anything) a wide-eyed young actress arriving in Hollywood, meeting an amnesiac car-crash victim and getting caught up in a reality-bending story of film-making, brokenness, mutating identities and a strange blue box. There is...

Editors Note: This story originally ran on December 6, 2016. When a waiter comes to congratulate Naomie Harris "for all those films" on a bright afternoon at a West Hollywood hotel, it's fairly clear which ones he means. The highest profile, of course, is her work as a different kind of Moneypenny in the Daniel Craig-era Bond series; there is also the likes of Pirates of the Caribbean, Miami Vice and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom on her filmography. But as Paula in Barry…...

When “Archer” started out, it was a standard, but very funny, animated spy spoof. However, recent seasons have seen the creators throw out the narrative rule book and play freely with all kinds of genres. Season 5 saw the titular agent and his crew head to Florida for “Miami Vice” style shenanigans, while season 7 saw them cross the country to California. And now, season 8, dubbed “Archer: Dreamland,” has them going noir.

Michael Mann has gone back and re-edited several of his films, including Manhunter and most recently, Blackhat. Sometimes these changes are substantial, other times they’re redundant. The director believes his last cut of The Last of the Mohicans is the superior film, while most of his fans seem to agree the Director’s Cut of Miami Vice is the inferior version. Now […]

Though it started out as a spoof of James Bond-style spy stories, Archer‘s reinvented itself a couple of times over the past few years. There was that time it became a Miami Vice riff in season five, before “un-rebooting” itself in season six. It re-rebooted itself in season seven, this time as a Magnum P.I.-inspired private eye series. And […]

Kylie Jenner and boyfriend Tyga have been known to rock matching outfits before. But the couple really stepped up their sartorial game on Thursday night, when they hit the streets of Miami in ensembles that perfectly coordinated with their favorite accessory — an expensive car.
It wasn’t a Ferrari this time though. (Which, is probably a good thing for Tyga). Instead, the couple tried the Italian sport car’s rival brand — a Lamborghini.

Today Hollywood said goodbye to one of the most important entertainment executives of the 20th Century.
Grant Tinker, who helped usher in such great programming such as The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, St. Elsewhere, Family Ties and Hill Street Blues died at the age of 90.
Tinker, started as a trainee on NBC radio in 1949 and subsequently witnessed the birth of television. No matter where he was, his finger was on the pulse.
In the '50s he worked at McCAnn Erickson, as advertising was the place to influence TV (you remember them from Mad Men, right?).
He visited the pilot of Dick Van Dyke in 1961 and was married to star Mary Tyler Moore in 1962. They created Mtm Enterprises and delivered Mary Tyler Moore Show for CBS, garnering 29 Emmy Awards over its run.

Update: A second clip has now been released and can be seen down below.
With just hours to go until a new episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow debuts, The CW has treated us to a full clip from “Compromised” to whet our appetites. And thankfully, we have more to look forward to than seeing Damien Darhk in a suit straight out of an episode of Miami Vice or a Flock of Seagulls music video.
In it, we see Mick Rory and Ray “Haircut” Palmer struggle to cope with recent traumas in their lives. You see, Rory still has yet to get over the loss of his best buddy, Leonard Snart, and Palmer has been feeling highly inadequate since the destruction of his Atom suit in “Shogun.”
At the end of last week’s episode, Rory presented Palmer with Snart’s cold gun in an effort to alleviate both their problems.

Though Alexander Skarsgård and Paul Rudd have already joined the cast as Beiler and one of the Americans respectively, Variety reports that actor Justin Theroux has now rounded out the main trio, playing the other American surgeon.
