Mark Wahlberg continues to be a major presence in Hollywood movies, particularly in the action genre. Though it was Boogie Nights (1997) that served as Wahlberg's big break, he would go on to star in films like The Italian Job (2003), Four Brothers (2005), Shooter (2007), and 2 Guns (2013). And not all of these films have been one-offs. Wahlberg appeared in two of Michael Bay's Transformers movies as Cade Yeager.
In addition to action, however, Wahlberg has been a mainstay in the comedy genre, often mixing the two together. Wahlberg starred in Spencer Confidential in 2020, which became a major hit for Netflix. Continuing his foray into streaming action-comedies, Wahlberg appeared in Apple TV+'s The Family Plan in 2023 and Netflix's The Union in 2024, both of which were also viewership hits, even if critics weren't impressed.

As is the story with countless others, Mad Max: Fury Road got me hooked on the Mad Max series. For years, Mel Gibson played the lead role of Max in director George Miller's post-apocalyptic saga. Gibson originated the role of Max Rockatansky back in 1979, and reprised it in 1981's Mad Max 2 (Aka The Road Warrior) and then again in 1985's Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. By the time Mad Max: Fury Road rolled around in 2015, Gibson was already 69 years old and thus had aged out of playing the action lead.
While it was hard for many to imagine a Mad Max movie without Mel Gibson, George Miller made an outstanding choice in casting Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky. Bringing his antagonist Bane-like energy to a protagonist role, Hardy is great in Mad Max: Fury Road. I would love to see Hardy return to the Mad Max series for any future iterations,...

Tyrese Gibson and Terrence Howard have shared the screen twice. The duo first appeared together in 2005’s Four Brothers and reunited in 2022’s The System. While both actors share a friendly bond on-screen, Gibson had serious issues with Terrence Howard’s role in the latter’s critically acclaimed Empire series.

Actors Tyrese and Taraji P. Henson go way back from their Baby Boy days. And since then, the singer believed that everyone was waiting to see their friendship blossom into something more. Although they never dated, Tyrese quipped that he didn’t feel too comfortable watching Henson with other men on screen.

The original actor cast in Shooter would have resulted in a Very different film than the 2007 Mark Wahlberg flick. Since transitioning from rapper to actor, Wahlberg has appeared in everything from wacky family comedies to sci-fi blockbusters and intense dramas. Still, Mark Wahlberg action movies are a genre unto themselves and have given the star some of his biggest hits. This includes Four Brothers, his two Transformers outings and 2007's Shooter, which has become a streaming hit on Netflix.
This thriller was based on the novel Point of Impact by author Stephen Hunter and cast Wahlberg as Bob Lee Swagger, a retired marine sniper. After being framed for an assassination, Swagger goes on the run to clear his name; this involves many gunfights and car chases too. This Antoine Fuqua movie was a modest success upon release and later spawned a TV series starring Ryan Phillippe.

Chicago – Tyrese Gibson is taking this one personally. Originally from the Watts neighborhood in Los Angeles, Gibson is the lead role in the film “1992” (in theaters on August 30th). His character Mercer went through the Watts Uprising in 1965, plus he and his son must navigate the Rodney King Uprising in 1992.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
In that year, Mercer Bey (Gibson) is desperately trying to rebuild his life and relationship with his son (Christopher A’mmanuel) amidst the turbulent Los Angeles uprising following the Rodney King verdict. Across town, another father and son (Scott Eastwood) put their own strained relationship to the test as they plot a precious metals heist from the factory where Mercer works. As tensions rise in Los Angeles and chaos erupts, both families reach their boiling points when they collide.

Shooter's recent streaming success and Mark Wahlberg's interest could lead to a sequel with Michael Pea and Antoine Fuqua. There are 12 novels about Bob Lee Swagger, providing plenty of source material for potential sequels to Shooter. Wahlberg references his connections at Paramount and admits a possible sequel would be cool.
Mark Wahlberg addresses the possibility of a sequel to Shooter. Wahlberg starred in the 2007 Antoine Fuqua-directed movie as Marine Scout Sniper Bob Lee Swagger, who is framed for an assassination attempt, and must unravel the sinister political conspiracy at the heart of this injustice. Mark Wahlberg's latest action-comedy, The Union, features him as a construction worker turned reluctant spy alongside Halle Berry. Out of the star's last 11 movies, only two were certified "Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes. While The Union may not break Mark Wahlberg's recent Rotten Tomatoes streak, it's shaping up to be Wahlberg's best action movie in some time.
I'm weirdly excited for Mark Wahlberg's next action comedy, but I doubt it's going to help his current Rotten Tomato streak. Wahlberg has had a varied acting career, which includes acclaimed dramas like Boogie Nights or The Departed, but audiences still know him best for his action output. Mark Wahlberg action movies are (usually) a fun time, with some of his best offerings including Shooter, Four Brothers and 2 Guns with Denzel Washington. In recent years, I've noticed an interesting trend in his career though.

Four Brothers is a Western-inspired thriller that closely echoes a John Wayne classic in its sibling dynamics and revenge plot. The Wahlberg film adds complexity and darkness to the traditional Western tale, making the characters more relatable and the story more gripping. By paying homage to The Sons of Katie Elder, Four Brothers joins a long tradition of movies quietly remaking John Wayne classics with updated twists.
A Mark Wahlberg thriller from the early 2000s is a thinly veiled remake of a classic John Wayne Western from the 1960s. John Wayne starred in 80 Westerns throughout his career, which itself spanned half a century. Of course, he fronted plenty of other kinds of movies from dramas (The Quiet Man) to war epics (Sands of Iwo Jima), but Westerns are where he left an indelible impression. With Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. became an A-list star and the face of one of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters ever in 2008. Of course, there was one actor who left the superhero flick feeling completely let down by Marvel Studios. Yes, we’re talking of Terrence Howard, who donned the role of James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes; but was later replaced by Don Cheadle in the sequel, Iron Man 2.
But don’t worry, it seems Howard has moved on and has no ill will toward the franchise or his former co-star, Downey Jr., despite his initial shock and disappointment at not being cast as Rhodes in the later films.

Things got a little hairy between Mark Wahlberg and Martin Scorsese during production on “The Departed.”
Wahlberg, whose lone (acting) Oscar nomination came for his role as Sergeant Dignam in the Boston Police Department, recalled having some “issues” with Scorsese over his hair length on the set of the 2006 film. (“The Departed” earned Scorsese his sole Academy Award for Best Director.)
The backstory: Wahlberg was supposed to directly follow up 2005’s “Four Brothers” with “Invincible.” In “Invincible,” he played bartender Vince Papale who, against all odds, made the Philadelphia Eagles team in 1976; the real-life role called for long hair. “The Departed,” which he ended up shooting during a break in “Invincible” production, did not.
Wahlberg says his “weird hair” in “The Departed” didn’t go over well with Marty.

Martin Scorsese's 2006 film "The Departed," a remake of Andrew Lau's and Alan Mak's 2002 cop drama "Infernal Affairs," was about a criminal (Matt Damon) who had been raised by a mob boss (Jack Nicholson) specifically to infiltrate the Boston Pd. At the same time, a cop (Leonard DiCaprio) was assigned a deep, deep undercover mission into Nicholson's mob, having to pose as a career criminal. Both occupied their roles for years and began to doubt their identities. "The Departed" is one of Scorsese's more awarded films, which is strange as he has made several much better films since.
"The Departed" was nominated for five Academy Awards and won four, for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing. The only actor nominated for the film was Mark Wahlberg, playing a very aggressive and extremely Bostonian Staff Sergeant named Sean Dignam. Dignam didn't play a major role in the film's story,...

Mark Wahlberg has admitted he wasn’t entirely happy while filming Martin Scorsese’s 2006 film The Departed.
Wahlberg played Sergeant Dignam, who worked in the Special Investigation Unit of the Massachusetts State Police Department, in the Boston-set film, which also starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin and Vera Farmiga, among others.
“I was a little pissed about a couple things but look, it all worked out in the end, I think,” Wahlberg said on the March 14 episode of Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast.
“Originally I was supposed to play another part. Originally, I was supposed to get paid,” he said, without elaborating. “And then even when we kind of agreed that I would play Dignam and I saw the advantages of playing that part and how I would approach the situation with everybody else playing opposite me, I then had another movie after.

Mark Wahlberg clashed with director Martin Scorsese during the filming of 2006's The Departed. The actor revealed that he got hair extensions for Invincible, his next movie, and he refused to remove them after his filming as Dignam went longer than expected. The Departed was worth the behind-the-scenes friction in the end, as it was a major critical and commercial success.
The Departed star Mark Wahlberg addresses the behind-the-scenes clashes that occurred with Martin Scorsese. Leonardo DiCaprio leads The Departed's cast as Billy, an undercover cop who works to identify a mole in the Boston police department. The film, which took home four Oscars, features a stacked cast, with Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, and Alec Baldwin also starring. Wahlberg played Dignam in the film, a hot-headed Sergeant, and he notoriously had some friction with Scorsese during filming.

André 3000 stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in late January, during which he taped a “Colbert Questionert” segment that didn’t air until Thursday night (February 8th). During the series of questions, the rapper-turned-flutist revealed some interesting tidbits, including how he nearly joined the Fast and Furious family and once killed an ant farm.
After André couldn’t come up with a favorite action movie, Colbert probed him on why he hasn’t been in a Fast and Furious film, saying, “I could see you driving a fast car, off a cliff or something into a boat.”
In response, André said that he actually auditioned for the franchise, but another Atlanta rapper took his spot. “I would have, but I think Ludacris took the role,” he explained. “I actually tried out. I tried out for Fast and Furious and Ludacris actually took the role.”

Desperation often leads to violence when someone’s back is against the wall. Humans are animals, and when cornered, they’ll lash out, throwing caution to the win as part of a fight or flight response. In Lionsgate‘s Desperation Road trailer, a mother protects herself against a corrupted officer of the law, leading to gunfire, bewilderment, and a snap decision to flee the scene. Mistakes can catch up to the best of us, and secrets unravel easily when the past comes back to haunt you.
“In a small Mississippi town, justice and the law are two very different things,” reads the official synopsis for Desperation Road. “Academy Award Winner Mel Gibson, Garret Hedlund, and Willa Fitzgerald star in a modern noir thriller based on the acclaimed novel by Michael Farris Smith about two lost souls tortured by the mistakes of their past and bound by a secret that keeps them running.

Mark Wahlberg became a veteran actor in his own right since his days in hit films like Basketball Diaries and Boogie Nights. Wahlberg’s longevity might have come as a shock to the actor himself, who didn’t believe he’d make it to his mid 30s.
Why Mark Wahlberg didn’t think he’d make it to the age of 35 Mark Wahlberg | Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images
Wahlberg acknowledged that he wasn’t the same person or actor that he was in his earlier years in the business. Wahlberg’s 30s saw the actor portraying more varied roles like Four Brothers and The Departed. He’d also become a family man, sharing four children with his wife Rhea Durham. But perhaps the actor was the most appreciative for his mid-30s because he wasn’t sure he’d live that long.

F9, is a major stepping stone to the epic finale of the Fast and Furious franchise, and the F9 cast is full of returning series regulars and new characters played by rappers and former rappers, as is the Fast and Furious way. For the ninth installment in the main series, F9 tells the next chapter in the story of Dominic Toretto and his formidable crew. The movie takes place years after the events of The Fate of the Furious and once again puts Dom's team at the center of a crisis that could change the world. F9's action-packed adventure uses multiple characters across different eras to tell this story.

In the early part of the 2000s, Terrence Howard was on the cusp of major stardom. He’d been around since the mid-nineties, stealing scenes in movies like Dead Presidents, Mr. Holland’s Opus and The Best Man (which spawned a legit franchise). But, it was his role in Paul Haggis’ Oscar-winner Crash that led to many saying he would be the next great actor of his generation. His role in the Sundance break-out Hustle & Flow was a sensation that nabbed him a (well-deserved) Oscar nomination, and he followed it up with excellent character work in Four Brothers, The Brave One, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, and more. But, his role as James Rhodes in Iron Man promised big things to come.
At the time, no one knew the film would kick off the MCU, and he was well-positioned, with his character slated to become War Machine in the sequel.

A film becoming a cult classic is never a guarantee. Some movies have all the makings of cult classics but then end up having so much mainstream appeal that they just become classic classics instead (see: John Wick). Other movies are made with the sincerest aspirations to quality only to become fan favorites when they fall well short (see: The Room).
Still, many more films appear to have all the elements in play for cult classicdom but inevitably end up in a DVD bargain bin or streaming service backpage all the same. Most of them deserve such a fate. After all, not everything needs a fandom. Some, however, deserve a second look. A prime example is John Singleton’s 2005 action film Four Brothers.

February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.
This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.
The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

Creativity comes in fits and starts, but stagnation can often feel like death to someone whose livelihood survives on their art output. For some, art pays the bills, and when you’re not creating, it means the difference between heat in your house and eating ramen for dinner for the sixth night in a row. In A24‘s Showing Up trailer, Lizzy (Michelle Williams) is a sculptor preparing to open her new show, but she’ll have to manage her creative life and daily drama first.
Kelly Reichardt directs Showing Up from a script she co-wrote with Jonathan Raymond. The film presents a funny portrait of art and craft, with Lizzy’s family and friends adding to her stress, challenging her patience, and questioning every move she makes. Joining Williams for Reichardt’s dramatic comedy are Hong Chau, Andre Benjamin, Maryann Plunkett, John Magaro, James Le Gros, and Judd Hirsch.

For those still under the erroneous impression that police brutality against Black people and other communities of color exists as an exclusively American form of racially motivated violence, “Athena,” an explosive drama (figuratively and literally) from French director Romain Gavras, son of legendary auteur Costa-Gavras, disproves it.

Realizing that his mob family may not have his best interests in mind, Dwight slowly builds a “crew” from a group of unlikely characters, to help him establish a new criminal empire in a place that to him might as well be another planet.
Hedlund will appear in the series regular role of Mitch Keller, an Oklahoma native and ex bull-rider who retired prematurely after injuries led to addiction.
Along with Stallone and Hedlund, the cast also includes Andrea Savage, Martin Starr, Max Casella, Domenick Lombardozzi, Vincent Piazza, Jay Will, and A.C. Peterson.

“Ozark” fans, rejoice. The Jason Bateman and Julia Garner-starring drama series is returning to Netflix in April with a second part to its fourth season — and it’s just one of many other hotly anticipated titles coming to the streamer this month.
April will also see the long-awaited sophomore installment to “Russian Doll,” the mind-bending “Groundhog Day”-esque dramedy series starring Natasha Lyonne as a hard-partying New York City woman stuck in a brain-melting circuitous loop from hell.
For fans of capital-m mess, there’s the Spanish-language “Elite,” which traces the scandalous (and often murderous) exploits of the posh attendees of high school Las Encinas. Or, if you prefer your glamorous mess via reality series, “Selling Sunset” — about the lux real estate market in Los Angeles — is premiering its fifth season April 22.
In notable films, there’s the Judd Apatow-helmed “The Bubble,” a spoof loosely inspired by the...

A list of new streaming releases on Netflix, what a concept!
Netflix’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by the return of one of the great sci-fi comedies ever. Natasha Lyonne is set to return as the temporally displaced Nadia on Russian Doll season 2 on April 20. The first season of the show premiered in 2019 and appeared to tell a rather complete story about one Brooklyn woman’s experiences of dying over and over again. But Lyonne and fellow producers Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler still have some story to tell. Netflix is undoubtedly very happy to let them continue to tell it.

Based on the book of the same name by Baltimore Sun reporter Justin Fenton, “We Own This City” is a six-hour limited series chronicling the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force — and the corruption and moral collapse that befell an American city in which the policies of drug prohibition and mass arrest were championed at the expense of actual police work.
