Valdimar Jóhannsson’s Icelandic-Swedish-Polish drama “Lamb,” starring Noomi Rapace was awarded best film and actress for Rapace at the 54th edition of Sitges’ International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, which wrapped Sunday.
The prizes add to an Originality Prize which the film received when competing at July’s Cannes Un Certain Regard.
“Lamb,” a horror-comedy combo, follows protagonist Maria, played by Rapace, a woman living with her husband in the total loneliness of the Icelandic countryside. According to a Variety review, “creepy-funny-weird-sad ‘Lamb’ proves just how far disbelief can be suspended if you’re in the hands of a director — and a cast, and a SFX/puppetry department — who really commit to the bit.” Lamb is produced by Go to Sheep, Black Spark Film & TV and Madants with New Europe Film Sales and A24 attached.

Encores!, the acclaimed series of concert-style theatrical productions founded to rediscover overlooked Broadway gems of years past, announced plans to stage Into The Woods, the beloved Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine musical that is anything but overlooked.
Into The Woods, which has been staged, revived and filmed many times over (including the 2014 feature film starring Meryl Streep and James Corden), will be the first of a new Encores! mission to celebrate iconic American musicals, the New York City Center announced today.
No production timeline or target opening was announced; the city’s theater venues remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“If the reason to revive a hidden gem is to discover it,” said Encores! Artistic Director Lear deBessonet, “then the reason to revive a beloved musical that holds enormous meaning to so many people is to discover what we have in common, and how our experience with these shows connects us.

The upcoming season of Encores! at New York’s City Center will include an adaptation by Pose‘s Billy Porter of The Life, a musical last seen in New York on Broadway in 1997.
Porter’s adaptation, which he’ll direct, is one of two upcoming Encores! productions reviving rarely staged Broadway musicals centering on Black lives; also in development is director Kenny Leon’s production of 1983’s The Tap Dance Kid. The two productions – a third remains to be announced – will mark the long-running series’ first season under the artistic direction of Lear deBessonet.
“I believe the future of a thriving Encores! has three prongs,” deBessonet said in a statement. “Revivals of hidden gems, productions where artists reclaim work for our time through their own personal lens, and celebrations that look at the ways musical theater can connect us, in this city and across the country. These upcoming projects hold seeds of all three tenets.

Get ready for more betrayals and bawdy behavior. “Harlots” will be back for another season.

At the center of “Harlots” is Margaret Wells (Samantha Morton), a brothel owner for the people who grew up in the business herself. Her chief rival is Lydia Quigley (Lesley Manville), a madam who tries to set her prostitutes apart by giving them education and then charging a pretty penny to her higher-ranking clientele.
When last we left them, Margaret was dealing with her two daughters, who also followed her into the family whoring business.

The power struggle between the two main bawdy houses in “Harlots” is about to get even more personal.
The first season of Hulu’s critically acclaimed drama about Georgian-era brothels and the women who work there draws to a close on Wednesday. When last we left the women, Margaret Wells (Samantha Morton) was dealing with the aftermath of her daughter Lucy (Eloise Smyth) killing a nobleman Sir George (Hugh Skinner), when her other daughter Charlotte (Jessica Brown Findlay) got arrested and thrown into jail for the murder. Joining her is Daniel Marney (Rory Fleck Byrne) who’s also been framed for the killing.

In last week's Masters of Sex pilot, we watched Dr. William Masters go to great lengths to get a risqué study approved at his hospital. Unsurprisingly, in "Race to Space," we found out that details have been leaked about the content of the studies and Masters is now in a heap of trouble.
With his pivotal experiment being uprooted from his office, Masters turned to the help of one of his subjects, a prostitute named Betty. He decided the best course of action would be to move his sex study to a brothel.
Masters is already getting enough heat about this, so I couldn't imagine how well it would go over for the provost to find out that he was now operating at a cathouse.
However, desperate times call for desperate measures. Betty has also been one of the most valuable and compliant subjects. Speaking of, it was definitely not...

This year’s MTV Movie Awards was an evening of highly anticipated reunions, sneak peeks, and of course, the hostess herself, Rebel Wilson. Rebel’s opening sequence with James Franco was great, but she really blew it out of the water when she was joined onstage by her Pitch Perfect co-stars for a live mashup performance of "Lose Yourself/Girl on Fire." Soon enough, when Rebel busted out the leather pants and nun chucks and the audience knew we were in for a hell of a show. Rebel’s opening monologue hit all the right notes, and aside from a few bits that landed a little flat later in the show, she proved to be an entertaining and capable host.

Those Gallagher nutjobs sure have packed a lot of wrongness into a mere 24 episodes, haven't they? As we count down to the Season 3 premiere on Sunday, let's remember some of their ... um ... finer moments.
And be sure to check back on Monday for a whole new season of gobsmacked weekly recaps!
1. Eating Bald Eagle at Thanksgiving (Ep. 2.11)
Well, hey - Benjamin Franklin did lobby for the national bird to be the turkey. So they're not roasting an endangered species to succulent perfection, they're just paying tribute to our forefathers. Right?
2. Using Carl as Bait for a Pedophile Priest (Ep. 1.05)
Thankfully, budding sociopath Carl (Ethan Cutkosky) can handle himself, but the fact that Lip (Jeremy Allen White) and Ian (Cameron Monaghan) would dangle the kid in front of the old perv like a jerky treat is pretty foul. In the end, they did get "The Groper" to perform Kev and V's...

So, in comparison to the last three episodes this was a little hit-and-miss. It was a little dodgy in trying to balance some comedy with its intellectual cynicism. I mean, once again, it defied clichéd an introduced further to complexities to Christopher and his relationship with (one of) the women in his life. It was still head-and-shoulders above any of its peers, but in comparison to the preceding episodes, it was a little bit of a let-down. Allow me to elaborate…
To be fair, it started off in a very interesting way, focusing on every character but Christopher himself. But Valentine and Christopher’s brother turned out to be pointless inclusions, as the action all happened in Rouen, so one side of Christopher’s love triangle was emitted (apart from one beautiful moment where Christopher runs to a woman he thinks is Valentine, only for it...

Giuseppe Patroni Griffi deserves attention. His chic revenger's tragedy 'Tis Pity She's a Whore (1971) is one possible way in: you get Charlotte Rampling, an Ennio Morricone score that's just a Jacobean riff on his spaghetti western stylings, lashings of sex and gore, and a design sensibility which pays some kind of lip service to period while being deliriously seventies at all times, so that it would not be too surprising if Oliver Tobias donned a set of sixteenth century tinted shades, or a tie-dyed doublet.
An alternative entry point is Identikit (1974), Aka The Driver's Seat, from the novel of that name by Muriel Spark. It's the tale of a mysterious woman wandering through a nameless city, hoping to rendezvous with "a friend" whom she's apparently never met. In a parallel plot thread, apparently taking place a day or two later, the police are interrogating everyone she's come into contact with.

London arts centre, a stalwart of ugly-building polls, is hoping its new cinema will kickstart a cultural quarter in the City
For an organisation that is trying to be more inclusive, more involving, the name "Barbican" – a defensive structure, a fortification to keep the hordes out – is possibly not ideal. "I say 'watchtower'," the arts centre's chief executive, Sir Nicholas Kenyon, says when asked to define it. "It is something that looks out on the city and beyond it."
Whatever the definition, most people know what the Barbican centre is, where it is – and even how not to get lost there. That has not always been the case but, after many uphill battles, an awful lot of people now even love the place.
On Thursday the Barbican will celebrate its 30th anniversary, entertaining guests in its enormous and unlikely tropical conservatory – with more than 2,000 species of plants and trees as well as finches,...

The twentieth year of Catherine Breillat’s directorial career marked a shift. While her thematic focus and bold vision remained true, her skills as a filmmaker and storyteller began showing strong signs of improvement beginning with 1996′s Perfect Love. It opens with a man explaining to the police how and why he killed his lover as well as her daughter’s account. Building toward such an extreme end, the actual story of the romance that the film flashes back to is surprisingly subtle. Too often this kind of disintegrating relationship story fails to build up the relationship and make you invest in it before tearing it down but on this note Perfect Love excels. Bonus points for excellent use of phallic symbolism.
Four of Breillat’s next five films share bonds that demand a break from a chronological structure. 1999′s Romance and 2004′s Anatomy of Hell share the presence of...

Simone Eder and Carlotta Corvi report from the Venice International Film Festival.
The 68th was certainly a memorable year with the overall quality of the films being very high and the films for the lineup well selected. Some films surprised while some films disappointed, and most of them will be talked about in the coming weeks and months.
Day 1
The longest running Film festival in the World kicked off its 68th Edition Festival at the Lido in Venice with the world premiere of George Clooney’s political drama The Ides of March starring Ryan Gosling, Clooney himself, Paul Giamatti and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and was the first film shown in competition for the Golden Lion. There are a couple of reasons for revisiting the Toronto International Film Festival's lineup for its documentary program, Real to Reel. One of them is Aj Schnack's interview with Thom Powers, Tiff's Documentary and Mavericks Programmer, posted just hours after the Mavericks lineup was announced on Tuesday. Discussing the highlights of both programs, they touch on another reason: Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory is making all sorts of headlines. Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's third film chronicling the odyssey of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr, aka the West Memphis Three, through the labyrinth of the Us legal system, follows Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills (1996) and Paradise Lost 2: Revelations (2000). All three films deal with what Powers calls in his Programmer's Note "an 18-year-old murder case that has become an iconic example of a legal witch hunt." In 1993, when all three men were still teens,...

Wow, it's been a while, but I'm back! And thanks to FanGirlTastic, I was able to not only do my very first book review, but also my very first phone interview with the author, Oriana Small, otherwise known as Ashley Blue, gonzo porn star pervert extraordinaire.
I must admit, I was a little apprehensive at first - all I knew of Small before reading the book was her infamous "choke out" scene for Khan Tusion, her trademark of shoving her hand down her throat, and some dubious racial remarks on a Howard Stern show. That and some terrifyingly rough porn. I was reassured on watching the Stern show that the dubious racial remarks turned out to be out-of-context banter where she gave as good as she got in the sarcastic joke department, and…well, I didn't watch the Khan Tusion scene. Reading about it was distressing enough, and as I told Small,...

Usama Alshaibi’s Profane debuted in Berlin last week and the film already garnered a review by Ceven Knowles. To be honest, I haven’t read it yet because I’m waiting to see the film first without preconceptions. But, I think it’s a positive write-up.Actually, there are lots of write-ups coming from the Berlinale. On Electric Sheep, Pamela Jahn and Alison Frank review films Road to Nowhere, The Devil’s Double, Tomboy and Dance Town.Robert Koehler has several write-ups. First, he says Miranda July’s The Future isn’t good, but Marie Losier’s The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye is excellent. Then, this round-up of several films makes the fest sound pretty dismal overall.Kinemastik reviews some Berlinale short films.Clint Enns has a completely excellent review of Jaimz Asmundson’s phenomenal short film The Magus, cluing us in on many of the fine...

Black Swan is, at its core, a film about sexual awakening, and the way that it unfolds everything it touches to present something new. Sex is a fairly new topic for Darren Aronofsky, because even though it has been present in his previous work (particularly Requiem for a Dream), sexual identity has never been a predominant concern for any of his characters. Here, in his first film with a female protagonist, he acquits himself beautifully on the technical front and is able to brilliantly imagine a sensual world that is only now coming into focus for Natalie Portman’s ballerina, but in doing so, reveals his limitations in understanding the nuances of human behavior and interaction. Healthy female sexuality may be a terrifying prospect for Portman here, but it is all the more so to Aronofsky.

Robert here, with my series Distant Relatives, where we look at two films, (one classic, one modern) related through a common theme and ask what their similarities and differences can tell us about the evolution of cinema.
Upstairs/Downstairs
They tell bird owners to avoid putting your new pet in one of those high hanging Tweety-bird cages. See, if the bird spends most of his time positioned above you, he'll develop a sense of superiority and will be impossible to teach and train. Just in case the overworld/underworld concept started to seem like a common and cliched metaphor, it doesn't hurt to remember that it's a fact of nature. Those who are above see themselves as greater than those who are below. And if it transcends animal species here on Earth then why not throughout the universe? Which is why it makes so much sense that the aliens of...

Tiger Woods Mistress Sued Over 'Whore' Allegations
Once again, Devon James' dirty mouth has landed her in some controversy -- after she allegedly accused a woman of being a "whore bag," "slut" and a "thief."
James -- aka Tiger Woods mistress 12³ -- is being sued by her former manager Gina Rodriguez -- aka David Boreanez's alleged mistress #1 -- after the two had a major falling out over commissions Gina said she earned after locking down deals for a porn movie and a website.
In the suit, filed a few days ago in L.A. County Superior Court, Rodriguez claims James got pissed over the 20% that Gina was making from the deals -- and posted some nasty stuff on the Internet such as:
-- "[Gina] doesn't pay her people and fck her" -- "She is a fcking whore bag slut" -- "Gina Rodriguez is a liar and her atty is a nut,...

This is a recap for the fourth episode of Season 4 of Mad Men starring Jon Hamm, Christina Hendricks, John Slattery, January Jones, and a slew of other talented actors, on an episode called “The Rejected.” And here if your For Your Consideration Recap: Best Mad Men Opening Shot Ever Whoo, y’all (fanning myself with comically oversized geisha fan), nudity on Mad Men? Is Jon Hamm going to get so drunk he accidentally forgets his pants at a Pond’s Cold Cream meeting? Or will this be like on NYPD Blue, when everyone stayed up late to see some primetime, network television nakedness, only to be slapped across the face with an image of Sipowicz‘s bare ass? We shall masturbate and see. Best Cancer Reveal Oh, look, Anna wrote!! Can someone make out this handwriting? I swear, I wish she’d stop writing her letters on Ms Paint. It’s disrespectful.

We’re still yet to sample its sci-fi spectacle here in the UK, however District 9 has well and truly made a big splash on the other side of the Atlantic. Dazzling Us audiences with its quirky and original spin on aliens as refugees on Earth, it rocketed to the top of the Us box office and is generating quite the buzz for its home locale – South Africa. This most southern point of the continent is already becoming a firm favourite with the small screen, the likes of HBO’s Iraq drama Generation Kill, 24 spin-off 24: Redemption and Channel 4’s period romp The Devil’s Whore having filmed there and now District 9 is introducing film fans around the world to the charms of South Africa.
District 9 was shot primarily in Tshiawelo and Kliptown, both of Soweto in downtown Johannesburg (more on the locations to come in a future...
