The overlap of awards season with a fire season has posed a stern test of Hollywood fortitude. Will there be shelf space for statuettes?
If Hollywood needs some optimism I’d propose it look to Jon M. Chu, who has contributed both a sharp, but unnoticed, new book plus a hit movie to advance his mission. His Wicked won the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement honor at the Golden Globes, but the kudo crowd also owes Chu a bow for his memoir Viewfinder, which poses his dissent on current issues.
Viewfinder details the hazardous trek of a young Chinese-American filmmaker seeking to pursue his zeal for pure “entertainment” in an industry that periodically seems disdainful of that concept.
As he preps his Wicked sequel at Universal, Chu, at 46, can look back upon a formidable list of snubs, slaps, cancellations and ethnic putdowns littering his younger years.

Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi star in the adaptation of Emily Bronte’s novel. MRC and Robbie’s LuckyChap are producing.
Fennell will write and direct the mid-19th century gothic tale of obsession and desire between Cathy Earnshaw and Heathcliff.
Warner Bros prevailed in a fierce bidding war for Fennell’s follow-up to Saltburn, reportedly paying around $80m for rights.
Netflix had previously tried to take Wuthering Heights off the table with a $150m bid that was rejected by Fennell and Robbie, who wanted a theatrical release.

Warning! Spoilers for Netflix's Uglies ahead!
Netflix's Uglies features some excellent music that fits perfectly with the futuristic theme. The film, based on the popular YA sci-fi novel by Scott Westerfeld, is set in a dystopian, high-tech future, and this is reflected in its soundtrack. Full of techno and dubstep-inspired elements, the accompanying music in Uglies sets the tone for Tally Youngblood's world. Then, more contemporary pieces from artists like Milck, Yonaka, and more help to drive some of the movie's big moments home.
Tally Youngblood, a 15-year-old eagerly awaiting her next birthday, lives in a high-tech city where everyone is required to get cosmetic surgery when they turn 16. This "Pretty" operation makes citizens healthy and beautiful, with perfect symmetry, large glowing eyes, and flawless skin and features. Being Pretty makes everyone so happy that there is no longer any need for conflict, allowing for a utopian civilization. However,...

While it is exciting to be dropped into this superhero world in which those who are meant to protect the world are far more villainous than expected, it is really the characters that bring this show to life. The cast of The Boys is an ensemble of actors that fit these characters so well, even the larger-than-life personalities.

Kylie Kelce is reacting to Jason Kelce‘s comments about his behavior at the Kansas City Chiefs v. Buffalo Bills game on Sunday (January 21).
In case you missed it, the 36-year-old Philadelphia Eagles center removed his shirt and jumped into the crowd after his brother, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, scored a touchdown.
Jason and his brother laughed about the moment during an episode of their New Heights podcast, and Jason explained that he didn’t get his wife’s permission to do that.
In an Instagram comment, Kylie playfully responded.

While discussing their love of amusement parks on a recent episode of their hit podcast New Heights, Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce made a shocking omission to his little brother, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, that the best part of amusement parks is not actually the rides at all.
Jason Kelce says Dippin Dots are the best thing about amusement parks
“The best thing about any amusement park is not the rides,” Jason said on the show. “It’s the Dippin’ Dots.”
“It’s the ice cream of the future that has been the ice cream of the future now for 40 years and has never made it outside of amusement parks,” Jason asserted.

As superhero movies become increasingly interconnected, Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy already feels like a relic of a bygone era. It was a trilogy that stood entirely on its own. You didn't need to watch any other DC films to understand what was going on, nor did the movies end up needing to be watched to understand later DC films. We simply got three solid movies that took themselves seriously while still being entertaining. Whereas pretty much everyone's suffering from at least a little Marvel fatigue at this point (with their multiple movies and tv shows per year), every single "Dark Knight" film — released three to four years apart — felt like a proper event.
For Cillian Murphy, who played Jonathon Crane (aka Scarecrow) in all three movies, there's another key difference that separates these films from the superhero movies of today: none of the characters have superpowers. "It's a slightly heightened level of storytelling,...

“When I read the script, I thought these could be scenes from my childhood,” cinematographer Alice Brooks shares about Netflix’s movie musical “tick, tick… Boom!,” which is set in early 1990s Soho in New York City. Brooks’ father was an aspiring playwright and her mother a dancer, so the film about late theatre composer Jonathan Larson feels like “a very personal story” for her. “This period in New York will forever be my New York,” she says, adding, “I grew up in a tenement building just like Jonathan, with a bathtub in my kitchen.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Brooks is also cinematographer on Warner Bros’ “In The Heights,” another movie musical about a different neighborhood and period in New York City. “I realized my job was to fall in love with Washington Heights, so I just completely immersed myself there,” Brooks shares about how she prepared to...

A column chronicling events and conversations on the awards circuit.
As the long-delayed Tony Awards signal the return of Broadway Sunday night, the reinvigorated musical invasion of Hollywood continues with the Stephen Chbosky screen adaptation of the multiple Tony Award-winning hit Dear Evan Hansen, the sole new wide release. That release follows by a week Amazon’s global streaming debut (and in some theaters) of the hit British musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.
Both focus on the trials and tribulations of teenagers in age of social media, and both rather quickly made the path from stage success to the movies (even as their stage productions are still in motion), an indication of a healthy appetite out there for the revival of movie musicals, a genre that has had its ups and downs since the MGM golden age when they were churned out almost weekly in order to help people forget tough times.

The enthusiasm for “In the Heights” was understandable.
Both as a symbol for creativity and for opportunities in film, but also as a broader societal statement about inclusion, there were always going to be high hopes for the fate of a film that celebrates a segment of the Latino community. Whether this ultimately helped the film, or even might have caused something of a backlash — especially considering that, after Warner Bros. marketed the film based on its inclusivity, Lin-Manuel Miranda had to apologize for its lack of Afro-Latino representation — is unclear.
And several factors separate whatever positive feeling one has about the film from how it has actually performed.
The reality is that the film’s $11.5 million opening weekend came in under expectations, even if they had been exaggerated by Film Twitter hype and very positive reviews. A non-franchise, non-sequel summer film whose intended audience includes older viewers, “In the Heights” is an anomaly,...

Update, June 17: Moreno issued a statement to The Hollywood Reporter that reads: “I’m incredibly disappointed with myself. While making a statement in defense of Lin Manuel Miranda on the Colbert Show last night, I was clearly dismissive of black lives that matter in our Latin community. It is so easy to forget how celebration for some is lament for others. In addition to applauding Lin for his wonderful movie version of ‘In the Heights,’ let me add my appreciation for his sensitivity and resolve to be more inclusive of the Afro-Latino community going forward. See, you Can teach this old dog new tricks.”

Here’s a concise description of the reality of the state of moviegoing: In two consecutive weekends, Warner Bros. released two movies. One was the eighth entry in the “Conjuring” horror franchise. The other, an acclaimed musical film, celebrated as a breakthrough in representation of Latinos onscreen. Both concurrently showed at no extra cost on HBO Max for subscribers.
“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” grossed $24.1 million. “In the Heights” managed less than half, at just $11.4 million.
Jon M. Chu’s widely anticipated and critically adored film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s 2008 Broadway musical failed to reach #1, falling $245,000 behind a strong third weekend for John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount). Lin-Manuel Miranda stood onstage at the United Palace theater a few blocks from his home and, as usual, put on a good show. Microphone in hand, he invited the room to go wild: “Oh, what’s up, ‘In the Heights’ opening night!” Puerto Rican flags flew from ebullient locals across the room.
It was the first day of the Tribeca Festival, and the historic theater blocks away from where he grew up and wrote his breakthrough, the Tony-award winning musical “In the Heights,” was about to screen for a boisterous crowd a day ahead of its national release. The movie had been delayed for a year due to the pandemic, but Miranda had been trying to get it made much longer than that.

It’s been a long road to the June 10 release of “In the Heights” in theaters and on HBO Max, and not just because the Broadway musical it’s based on opened back in 2008. It was originally scheduled for release in June 2020, but was delayed for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But it doesn’t seem that the delay has dampened enthusiasm for it, at least not among critics.
As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic score of 83 based on 38 reviews counted as of this writing: 37 of them are positive, one is somewhat mixed, and none are negative. Those sentiments are echoed on Rotten Tomatoes, where the film is rated 97% fresh based on 129 reviews thus far, only four of which are classified as negative. The Rt critics’ consensus says, “Lights up for ‘In the Heights,’ a joyous celebration of heritage and community fueled by dazzling direction and singalong songs.

“In the Heights” (Warner Bros.) likely won’t be one of the biggest openings of the year. It is expected to rank #1 this weekend ahead of Sony’s “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway,” with at the high end perhaps around where “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” landed last weekend ($24.1 million). But how well it does will provide important clues as to which audiences are returning and raise possibilities for a wider set of movies getting traction.
The Jon M. Chu-directed musical, based on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway production, is set apart from most films released anymore in several important ways. The preopening predictions of its gross — inexact these days, since they mostly poll the more limited audience that already has returned to theaters — suggest under $15 million. That would be under several recent debuts, but as always, the initial number might not tell the full story.

“In the Heights” production designer Nelson Coates had an important task from Lin-Manuel Miranda: The bodegas for the film adaptation of the stage show needed to be located east of Broadway, “because that was a historic Puerto Rican, Dominican and Cuban neighborhood.”
Anything west of that would be predominantly Irish, Russian or Jewish. The last thing director Jon M. Chu and Miranda wanted was to shoot anywhere but in the Heights. The film centers on the vibrant Washington Heights community and follows bodega owner Usnavi, played by Anthony Ramos, who dreams of a better life and returning to the Dominican Republic. Corey Hawkins (Benny), Leslie Grace (Nina), Melissa Barrera (Vanessa), Olga Merediz (Abuela Claudia) and Daphne Rubin-Vega (Daniela) also star.

In the recent Yes No Maybe So post I mentioned that we were getting three musicals in the space of seven months. But that was a gross understatement as I hadn't yet finished my Oscar chart research for 2021. There are actually Ten musicals... no make that eleven (!) that are supposed to arrive before Christmas. Release dates are subject to change, of course. The current schedule represents Hollywood doubling-down, no quintupling down, on audiences salivating en masse for musicals in the way they currently only do for animated fare and superhero films.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, of Hamilton fame, is spectacularly talented but looking at this schedule we're a little worried for him. We don't want Miranda to become the next Ryan Murphy -- i.e. stretched thin, predictable, veering into being a Brand first and artist second, and offering diminishing returns. "Somewhere a place for us..." 20th Century Studios has debuted a surprise teaser trailer during the Oscar ceremony for the new Steven Spielberg movie - a remake of the classic musical West Side Story. This was filmed in the summer of 2019, and has been rescheduled for release in theaters this December - right in the middle of the next upcoming awards season, of course. An adaptation of the 1957 musical, West Side Story explores forbidden love and the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The story focuses on the love story between teenagers Tony, played by Ansel Elgort, and Maria, played by newcomer Rachel Zegler. The rest of the big ensemble cast includes Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Corey Stoll, Brian d'Arcy James, Curtiss Cook, and Rita Moreno. This looks like an exciting refresh on the classic, but don't forget Jon M. Chu...
