Vasanth chose debutant Suvaluxmi after seeing her performance in the Bengali film Uttoran which was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival.
Director Vasanth feels that the film is the result of his love for Alfred Hitchcock.
Prakash Raj won laurels for his role.
Poovellam Kettupaar and Kanne were the working titles during the film's production but Vasanth chose Aasai as the title because "it was about both the protagonist and the antagonist"
The lead role was initially offered by Vasanth to Suriya, son of actor Sivakumar, to make his debut but he declined, citing a lack of interest in an acting career.
