April came to a close with just one new movie in wide release, Liam Neeson’s “Memory,” a remake of a Belgian revenge-thriller called “The Memory of a Killer.” Released into just 2,555 theaters by Briarcliff Entertainment, a division of Open Road, it wasn’t thought that Neeson’s latest would do particularly well, but it did even worse than initially projected. But we’ll get back to that.
The big winners of the weekend were the three family films, as DreamWorks Animation’s “The Bad Guys” repeated at #1 with a solid 16.1 million, down just 33 from its opening weekend with 44 million grossed to date.
Over the weekend, Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” became the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, bringing in 11.3 million (down 27) to take its domestic total to 160.88. The first “Sonic” movie only grossed 146 million in North America, but its potential legs were cut short by the...

It all started in January 2009. The movie? Taken. The movie star? Liam Neeson. That surprise hit created a new, palpable career path for the Irish thespian. Since then Neeson has starred in no less than fifteen actioners of a similar ilk. His newest, Memory, adds a twist to varying, mostly diminishing results. Written by Dario Scardapane, based on the 2003 Belgian film The Memory of a Killer and Jef Geeraerts’ source novel, and directed by Martin Campbell, it stars Neeson as Alex, a contract killer who finds himself a target after refusing to complete a hit. In one fell swoop our lead suffers from both a bout of empathy and an escalating case of memory loss.
As all corners converge on Alex he finds a potential ally in crusading FBI agent Vincent (Guy Pearce). Behind the bad men is there quickly revealed to be a villainess in the form of a...

Adapting an old comic line: of all the Liam Neeson action/revenge/rescue movies Memory is the most … recent. Neeson plays Alex Lewis, a hit man with scruples (again), seeking retirement (again) from his craft. But he’s forced into one more job (again) that goes awry (again) putting the target on his back (again). One of the reasons for his attempt to quit is awareness that the same dementia that has already deprived his brother of all awareness is starting that downward spiral for him. The complication that drives this tired plot is his refusal to whack a child, and his anger at those who did.

The return of Martin Campbell, the Brit director who successfully rebooted the James Bond franchise not once but twice, on opposite sides of the millennium and gave English-language audiences Antonio Banderas as the title character in The Mark of Zorro, counts as something to both welcome and/or celebrate. That's especially true after a prolonged absence from the kind of stylish, slick entertainments (2011's headache-inducing Green Lantern misfire notwithstanding) that made Campbell one of Hollywood's go-to directors for more than a decade. After two middling, modestly budgeted, ultimately disposable efforts, and now a third, underwhelming film in a row, Memory, a remake of a little-known, barely remembered 2003 Belgian crime-thriller, The Memory of a Killer (aka The Alzheimer Case),...

Martin Campbell shoots straight as a filmmaker and a talker. He knows what he likes and what he doesn't like. For one, he's not a fan of this day and age of largely computer-generated action. The filmmaker is old-school and continues to rely on real stunts to tell his stories, including his latest film, "Memory." It's a nasty revenge movie that's more in line with his dark thrillers, such as "Criminal Law" and "The Foreigner," than his big blockbusters like "Casino Royale."
Campbell's latest is one of the few remakes in his career. It's based on the Dutch film, "The Memory of a Killer." He stuck...

The past month was the year’s busiest at the box office with three of the year’s top five openers, and the past weekend saw four films gross above 10 million, a feat that surprisingly has not been achieved since last June. Things slow to a crawl this weekend, though, as we are one week out from the Marvel-in-waiting Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which will kick off the summer box-office season. Though this week’s only new wide release is expected to open soft, there is still juice left to squeeze out of the current slate before the arrival of the first MCU film since Spider-Man: No Way Home. This may be the lowest grossing weekend since February, but a blockbuster packed summer is right around the corner.
The only film going wide this week is the Liam Neeson action-thriller Memory, getting a release by Open Road.

April comes to an end with minimal wide releases for the final weekend – just one, actually. This isn’t too unusual, since we’ve been seeing this sort of thing every month this year so far. In this case, it might just be the fact that no studio wants to open a movie in the week before (or after) Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” (Marvel famously shifted 2018’s “Avenger: Infinity War” and 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” forward a week into late April rather than its customary May/summer movie season kick-off date.) Read on for your box office weekend preview for April 29 – May 1.

At a time when each new Liam Neeson action thriller has become utterly indistinguishable from the last, Martin Campbell’s “Memory” would at least seem to have a unique hook: In this one, the lanky Irishman plays a contract killer who’s suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Surely that should be enough to help the latest page in the Redbox chapter of Neeson’s career stand out from the likes of “The Ice Road,” “The Marksman,” and the rest of the post-“Taken” glut.
Mix in Monica Bellucci as the Jeffrey Epstein-esque queenpin of a child prostitution ring, Guy Pearce — no stranger to stories about anterograde amnesia — as a mustached FBI agent prone to wearily saying things like “Memory’s a motherfucker,” and pliable source material (the 2003 Belgian thriller “The Alzheimer Case”) that’s enriched by its new setting along Texas’ southern border, and it sounds like the recipe for a solid little programmer.

Fourteen years after the release of “Taken,” there’s a certain understanding of Action-Neeson movies that audiences have come to accept: Never ask questions about his Irish accent, even when he’s playing characters who shouldn’t have one; understand that, whatever the situation, Neeson and his “very particular set of skills” will prove indomitable; and never, ever think too hard about the real-world implications of these shoot-’em-up fantasies, lest the whole house of cards collapse.
“Memory,” the latest Action-Neeson release, is a terrible movie, and the fact that it’s trying to tweak the Action-Neeson formula isn’t even in the top 20 reasons of why it’s so awful. But if the paradigm of this subgenre is going to be changed in any way, it’s going to have to happen in a film far, far more competent than this one.

"We all have to die – what's important is what you do before you go." Uh sure, whatever you say Liam. Open Road Films has debuted the trailer for Memory, an action movie remake made by director Martin Campbell. The original Belgian film from 2003 was called De zaak Alzheimer (The Alzheimer's Case also known as The Memory of a Killer) but it has been dumbed down for American audiences with the title Memory. An assassin-for-hire finds that he's become a target after he refuses to complete a job for a dangerous criminal organization. "Alex is built for revenge but, with a memory that is beginning to falter, he is forced to question his every action, blurring the line between right and wrong." Liam Neeson stars as the aging hitman, with Guy Pearce, Monica Bellucci, Ray Stevenson, Stella Stocker, & Antonio Jaramillo. I'm starting to get worried Neeson ...

Martin Campbell’s action thriller ‘Memory’ has rounded out its ensemble cast, adding Emmy winner Guy Pearce, Monica Bellucci, Harold Torres, Taj Atwal and Ray Fearon.
The actors will star alongside Liam Neeson, who plays Alex Lewis, an expert assassin “with a reputation for discreet precision.”
According to the logline, when Alex refuses to complete a job for a dangerous criminal organization, he becomes a target and must go on the hunt for those who want him dead. Veteran FBI agents Vincent Serra (Pearce), Linda Amistead (Atwal) and Mexican intelligence liaison Hugo Marquez (Torres) are brought in to investigate the trail of bodies, leading them closer to Alex, but also drawing the ire of local tech mogul Davana Sealman (Bellucci). With the crime syndicate and FBI in hot pursuit, Alex has the skills to stay ahead, except for one thing — he is struggling with severe memory loss, affecting his every move.

Erik Van Looy's 2003 thriller The Memory Of A Killer (also known as The Alzheimer Case in English, or De Zaak Alzheimer in the original language) introduced much of the world to the works of local crime novelist Jef Geeraerts and created somthing of a sensation in the process. The film turned out to be a huge international hit, leading producers to team up with director Jan Verheyen for a second Geeraerts adaptation (Dossier K) and Verheyen is about to return to cinema screens with a third Geeraerts adaptation The Double Face (Het Tweede Gelaat). The once unconditional friendship between police officers Vincke and Verstuyft hits a very rough patch when they come up against a series of gruesome murders. Complicating matters even further, a...

Beligian director Erik Van Looy created something of an international sensation with his 2003 effort The Memory Of A Killer (also known as The Alzheimer Case in English, or De Zaak Alzheimer in the original language). Adapted from a hugely popular crime novel, the picture proved a huge hit both at home and abroad and inmany ways prefigured the coming wave of classy crime thrillers that were about to explode on the international scene from just a little bit farther north in the Nordic countries. After the success of that 2003 film director Jan Verheyen took the reins for a second adaptation from the same series with Dossier K, an equally slick and effective thriller that also met with great success, and now Verheyen returns...

From The Craft and The Birds to The Fugitive and She's All That, the many film reboots and remakes currently in the works...
Over the years that Den Of Geek has been going, we've regularly been charting the assortment of reboots and remakes that are making their way through the Hollywood system. This, then, is the current state of play. We've removed a bunch of projects that seem utterly dead - the once mooted remakes of Videodrome and Timecrimes, for instance - but we'll keep this list up to date as and when we hear of more.
Without further ado, here's what's coming up...
Akira
One of Hollywood's most on and off projects, the current state of the live action Akira remake is that it's back in the works. Marco J Ramirez, the showrunner for season 2 of Netflix's Daredevil show, has been hired to pen a screenplay. Warner Bros is still backing the film,...

Just above is your first look at Kurt Russell in Bone Tomahawk, a brutally violent, character-driven story following a sheriff (Russell), a gunslinger, a befuddled oldster and a cowboy as they attempt to rescue a group of captives from a band of cannibalistic troglodytes. The film co-stars Richard Jenkins, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, David Arquette, Fred Melamed, Sean Young, Sid Haig and Michael Pare. Showtime will be joining HBO and CBS and launching a streaming-only service sometime in 2015. Yahoo David Chase says he's open to the idea of a prequel to "The Sopranos": "Even if I did it, it wouldn't be 'The Sopranos' that was on the air - obviously at least one person is gone that we would need. There are a couple of eras that would be interesting for me to talk about, about Newark, N.J. One would be (the) late '60s, early '70s,...

When was the last time we were really excited for a Brian De Palma film? No? How about anything with Al Pacino? Still nothing? Ok, how about the combination of Brian De Palma and Al Pacino? Yeah, I thought that would get you.
It has been many years since De Palma and Pacino have worked together, but they are getting back together for Retribution. This film will tell the heartwarming tale about a hit-man afflicted with Alzheimer’s who is on the trail of a child prostitution ring in Philadelphia. Sounds like good fodder for the team that brought us Scarface and Carlito’s Way, doesn’t it? The film is based on the 2003 Belgian thriller The Memory of a Killer, which had the same basic plot, only in Dutch.
It does indeed seem like a good subject matter for a reunion of Pacino and De Palma, but at what price?...

Al Pacino will reunite with "Scarface" and "Carlito's Way" director Brian De Palma on the new thriller "Retribution".
A contemporary remake of Erik Van Looy's 2003 Belgian thriller "The Memory of a Killer," the story centers on an aging hitman and a cop who find themselves allies as they attempt to bring down a child pornography ring in Philadelphia.
What isn't known is if the remake will also include the original film's subplot in which the assassin is also battling the onset of Alzheimer's disease and must race against the clock to bring down the criminals before his mind goes.
Relativity International is in early talks with to pick up the project, which was initially being developed by Focus Features.
This marks the second project Pacino and De Palma have been linked to recently, the other being "Happy Valley" about Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno.

Brian De Palma is responsible for two of Al Pacino‘s many iconic roles: the leads in Scarface and Carlito’s Way. Now, after a long break from one another, the two are reportedly shopping a new movie at the American Film Market called Retribution. It’s a remake of the 2003 Belgian film, The Memory Of A Killer, which […]

It's crazy to think that Brian De Palma and Al Pacino have only worked together twice; perhaps it's because of the iconic roles from Scarface and Carlito’S Way that we often associate the duo together. Now after more than twenty years later they are looking to team up again for Retribution, a remake of the 2003 Belgian thriller The Memory Of A Killer. The plot sounds fantastic; it’s about a hitman with Alzheimer’s who is on the trail of a child...

"Scarface"/"Carlito's Way" duo Brian De Palma and Al Pacino have evidently been trying to find a way to work together again. Over at HBO, the pair was working on "Happy Valley," a project about the 2011 Penn State scandal until the network halted production in September, and there has been zero word since. But the pair have lined up another gig. Screen Daily reports that De Palma and Pacino are teaming for "Retribution." Loosely based on the 2003 Belgian thriller "The Memory Of A Killer" (trailer below), the story follows a cop and a hitman who work together to stop a child prostitution ring. No word on who penned the script, but color us interested. Meanwhile, that trade has also revealed a logline for Woody Allen's upcoming movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone, and it probably won't surprise you too much. This time around, Allen will tell the story...

Exclusive: FilmNation has begun talks at the Afm on the upcoming untitled Woody Allen project, one of several new titles to emerge on the eve of the market.
Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone star in the story that Allen shot on the east coast over the summer about an angst-ridden philosophy professor who starts an affair with a student.
Thus far no Us distributor is attached although regular Allen distributor Sony Pictures Classics must be regarded as the front-runner.
Meanwhile, buyers are also buzzing about Retribution, which marks the reunion of Al Pacino and Brian De Palma for the first time since Carlito’s Way in 1993. The pair had previously collaborated a decade earlier on Scarface.
Relativity International is understood to be in early talks with acquisitions executives on the story of a hitman and a cop who will go to any length to stop a Philadelphia child prostitution ring.

Apparently Erik Van Looy’s “Loft”, a remake of the 2008 Belgian film of the same name, has been casting something furious for a while now. The latest addition is Rachael Taylor (probably best known to moviegoers from “Transformers”, though she’ll soon be camping it up (one hopes) on the new “Charlie’s Angels” TV series), who joins a cast that already includes Patrick Wilson, James Marsden, Wentworth Miller, Eric Stonestreet and Taylor’s fellow Aussie, Isabel Lucas. The plot has the men playing “five married friends who share a loft where each brings his mistress. When the body of an unknown woman is found there, they begin to suspect one another of murder.” New addition Taylor will play Ann, “a call girl who Wilson pays to seduce Marsden, who she then ends up falling for.” Erik Van Looy, who directed the Belgian original (and who previously helmed a nice...

So yet another not very old foreign film is getting the remake treatment. And much like, say, Funny Games, it's getting remade by its original director. The film is called Loft, a remake of a 2008 Belgian film from director Erik Van Looy (The Memory Of A Killer), about "five married friends who decide to rent a loft together where they can bring their mistresses. When the body of an unknown woman is found in the loft, they realize that they don't know each other as well as they...
