Robert De Niro is adding another TV project to his plate.
The Oscar winner is attached to star in and executive produce a Paramount+ drama titled Bobby Meritorious, from writer Billy Ray (The Comey Rule, Captain Phillips) and Paramount Television Studios. The streamer outbid several other outlets for the project from its corporate sibling and has committed to develop it.
Should it go forward, the Paramount+ show would be De Niro’s second leading role in a TV series. He’s also starring in Netflix’s six-episode thriller Zero Day, from Narcos EP Eric Newman.

The flow of actors better known for their big screen work to TV continues apace. Now, we can add Robert De Niro to the list as he's aboard to star in and produce Netflix conspiracy thriller Zero Day.
Eric Newman, who produced Narcos among many other things, created the show, while Jackie's Noah Oppenheim will write and run it. Lesli Linka Glatter is aboard to direct.
Here's the somewhat opaque logline… "Zero Day asks the question on everyone’s mind –– how do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control? And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?"

Netflix is getting back in the Robert De Niro business -- but this time, it won't be for a big-budget movie. Instead, the streaming service has partnered with the legendary actor for his very first TV series in the form of a conspiracy thriller titled "Zero Day." The limited series, which will run six episodes, was created by Noah Oppenheim ("Jackie"), who will serve as an executive producer alongside Eric Newman and De Niro.
De Niro, known for his roles in classics such as "Heat," "The Godfather Part II," and "Goodfellas," among many, many others, previously teamed with Netflix on Martin Scorsese's ambitious "The Irishman." Clearly, that experience went well enough for him to finally jump into the world of TV after a decades-long career that dates back to the '70s. As for what the show is about? The synopsis reads as follows:

Watch Dogs: Legion’s hook is the ability to recruit and play as any character in London, but this new feature is really more representative of a series in the midst of an identity crisis.
Legion opens with Dalton Wolfe, an operative from DedSec, the hacker group featured in the previous two games, dispatched beneath the Houses of Parliament to defuse bombs set up by the rival hacker group Zero Day. (Apparently every story involving terrorists and London needs to reference the Gunpowder Plot in some way.) Wolfe succeeds in saving Parliament, but loses his life in the process while failing to stop other bombs set up around the city.
DedSec is blamed for the bombings and the British government quickly hires the private security company Albion to establish a high-tech surveillance state covering every inch of London. Things seem pretty grim until you choose a new operative to rebuild...

Fox has given a script commitment plus penalty to Puller, an hourlong drama based on David Baldacci’s bestselling John Puller book series, from former Bones executive producer Carla Kettner, Drop Dead Diva creator Josh Berman, Oscar winner Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour), Douglas Urbanski and Sony Pictures TV, where Berman is under an overall deal.
Written by Kettner, Puller is described as an action-forward procedural thriller about John Puller, an investigator with the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division. Puller, a decorated former Army Ranger, faces the most difficult case of his life when his brother, a convicted traitor, escapes from a maximum security prison. Together with Veronica Knox, an army intel specialist, Puller searches for his fugitive brother. In the book series, John and Veronica solve the most difficult of crimes while John secretly battles to restore his family honor.

With Thanos set to take on a huge role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the next few years thanks to Avengers: Infinity War, the Mad Titan’s presence in the comic books has been greatly increased as of late. That’s both a good and bad thing, but the way the iconic villain was defeated in Civil War II definitely falls into the latter category.
The end of U.S.Avengers #1 teased an upcoming event called “Zero Day” revolving around Thanos, and this first look at issue #2 gives us an idea of what’s to come. The solicitation text below confirms that the supervillain will be responsible for the death of Captain America, and from the sounds of it, the rest of the Marvel Universe won’t fare much better, either. How exactly he’s so powerful isn’t clear, though he does seem to be wielding some sort...

Mr Robot concludes its first season with a teasingly inconclusive but satisfying finale. Bring on season two…
This review contains spoilers.
1.10 eps1.9_zer0-day.avi
Three days is a long time in cyber-hacking. Since we last saw our unreliable narrator, the global economy has been brought to the brink of collapse. Not that Elliot remembers how, why, or indeed, whether he’s responsible.
After the Darlene and Tyler Dad-en revelations of previous episodes, I doubted whether Mr Robot had saved enough mysteries for its upcoming second season. Trust in creator Sam Esmail, is the lesson learnt. After this teasingly inconclusive finale, written and directed by Esmail, it’s clear that there are more than enough question marks dangling for Mr Robot’s return.
Zero Day may not have given many decisive answers, but it did provide a satisfying sense that everything on this show is done for a reason. The...

On the “Zero Day” of this year’s San Diego Comic Con, Image held a mini-Expo and announced a dozen new titles from creators, both popular or relatively unknown , including some new to writing or drawing for Image. These comics show that Image is the place where creators can roam free and write and draw crazy and interesting stories in a variety of genres. This freedom paid off big time as Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ sci-fi love story Saga continued to dominate the Eisner Awards. Part of Image’s commercial success is due to Robert Kirkman, especially The Walking Dead and the popular AMC television series it spawned. San Diego Comic Con showed that his comics have cross-media potential even before the first trade of a comic he is writing comes out.

Found footage films get a bad rap - and worse reviews. But the genre combines the vitality of punk rock with the reach of a video viral, and it has earned, if not respectability, then at least a respectful reappraisal. Some found footage (hereafter Ff) films are, admittedly, unwatchable (see The Devil Inside or, better, don't). But others, such as recent West Country-set religious chiller The Borderlands, or Bobcat Goldthwait's creepy Bigfoot hunt Willow Creek (out on May 2), are closer to unmissable.
Beyond an ominous title card, Ff films require little backstory, and the genre has only a brief history of its own. An uncompromising, hand-over-the-camera-lens look at totalitarianism in Vietnam-era America, Peter Watkins' 1971 mock-doc Punishment Park is considered Ff's chief forebear. Ruggiero Deodato's still-troubling Cannibal Holocaust (1979), however, is the most striking early archetype. Following a gonzo film crew into tribal Amazonia, it puts video-nasty atrocities through a film-school filter,...

Matt and Owen are making a movie — a comedy about getting high-caliber revenge on the bullies that make their lives hell at high school — and one of them wants to take the plot more seriously. Coming out of Slamdance as the Grand Prize Jury winner and spurred on by Kevin Smith, The Dirties could be a powerful look at a terrible phenomenon in a world where we thought movies like Elephant, The Standard and Zero Day had said everything to say. Now with a meta media twist. Check out the trailer for yourself: To get even more meta, Matt and Owen are played by Matthew Johnson and Owen Williams. In what’s obviously a labor of love, Johnson wrote, directed, starred in, produced and edited The Dirties and recently said, “We didn’t want to show another version of Hollywood bullying, where everything is over the top and seems way too insane to be real.” With...

With Hr rebuilding, a mysterious organization revealed, a new female super spy added to the team, and Root still trying to find the Machine, it's a wonder that Reese, Finch, Carter and Fusco find any time to kick back and relax.
And now with the Machine unleashed, it looks like their work is only just beginning.

If Person of Interest Season 2 wanted to go out with a major cliffhanger, "Zero Day" would have been a great candidate.
And yet after speaking with series creator and one of the writers of the finale, Jonathan Nolan, he implied that "God Mode" would serve as the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another, which is exactly what transpired, bringing about a level of closure for some of the mystery surrounding Finch and the Machine and opening the door for something even more.
I had thought that Root had been receiving a fake call from the Machine and only Reese was picking up the real deal, but it turned out both were given access to the super powered computer.
Essentially the chase continued, except Root with her objective to find the Machine and set it free; and Reese to stop Root and rescue Finch.

When "Person of Interest" heads into its Season 2 finale tonight, fans can rest easy knowing CBS has already renewed the series for a third season. That means that viewers shouldn't expect every loose Season 2 storyline to get tied up in this episode, "God Mode," as some will be left hanging to lead into Season 3.
Zap2it recently had the opportunity to speak with "Person of Interest" showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Greg Plageman, who teased where the Season 2 finale is headed. As set up in "Zero Day," the subject of the Machine's potential sentience is going to be a hot topic.
"I think we sort of laid out in a fair amount of detail in ['Zero Day'] our feelings about the Machine's sentience and where it's at in terms of the way Finch found kind of a workaround toward denying it sentience," Nolan says. "I think the nature of that word and what...

The Machine has rebooted, the call has gone out - and it looks like one person is going to have a "24-hour ticket to mayhem." Will it be Reese, Root, Finch or someone else?
I recently spoke with Person of Interest series creator Jonathan Nolan, along with executive producer Greg Plageman, about the end game on Person of Interest Season 2, its recurring characters, and what's in store for the finale, "God Mode."
Read on for excerpts from our Q&A…

Did you always know that the Machine shutdown and hard reset was the game plan to close out Person of Interest Season 2?
Nolan: Yeah, we've been building towards this for a long time. Because this season has spent a little more time answering questions about Harold Finch that for us it dovetailed very nicely with this idea that there's a more aggressive evolution than last season taking place here with the Machine.

"Zero Day" finally arrived and with it an outstanding Person of Interest episode full of suspense, intrigue, action, character drama, familiar faces and an edge of your seat hunt for one of the most important phone calls ever.
Not only was I hooked from start to finish, but the hour brilliantly blended flashbacks with the present dilemma, while revealing a ton of information that connected seemingly singular moments of the past.
There's a reason this is a top-rated show, and the penultimate episode of Person of Interest Season 2 solidified another reason why.
The Machine had been acting rather wonky ever since Reese's former CIA partner Kara Stanton uploaded the virus given to her by the shadowy corporation known as Decima Technologies. Not only was it failing to let social security numbers be revealed in time for rescue, but it was on the countdown to zero and a hard reset.

Today’s photos from an action-packed, upcoming episode of Person of Interest, titled “Zero Day”, reveal a familiar face. Yes, that’s the lovely and talented Amy Acker reprising her role on the CBS drama.
I’m tickled that J.J. Abrams is giving Acker, a favorite of mine, more work. The actress is already a darling of Mr. Joss Whedon, who hired her as his Beatrice for Much Ado About Nothing and gave her a role in The Cabin in the Woods. Of course she’s also appeared in a number of his shows, to include Angel and Dollhouse. Abrams has also used Acker in the past. She appeared in the final season of Alias. Great minds think alike!

Two young fathers find themselves pinned down by the antagonistic forces that define their choices and ultimately shape and foreshadow the future. In The Place Beyond the Pines, writer/director Derek Cianfrance’s ambitious third feature, there is a common thread full of moral ambiguities regardless of which side of the law his characters dwell in. The epic drama about fathers and sons sees Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper lead a stellar supporting cast of Dane DeHaan, Ray Liotta, Eva Mendes, Ben Mendelsohn, Harris Yulin, Rose Byrne, Bruce Greenwood and Emory Cohen, and the pairing portray complex, layered characters. The film had its premiere at the 2012 edition of the Toronto Int Film Festival, and Focus Features will release the saga in theaters this Friday, March 29th. I sat down with Derek during his whirlwind press tour for the film.

America has always been crazy about serial killers.
They’re our homegrown werewolves. They click with the fast-food car culture that roars in the country’s busy, busy heart. They fit neatly with our cult-of-celebrity-style national mythology.
These beasts that seem like men, mowing through victims like McDonald’s cheeseburgers, speeding for the televised takedown by John Q. Law – how can the USA not be wild for them?
That love-hate crush has been around since the days of Dr. Henry Holmes’ murder hotel was cutting down the attendance at the Chicago Worlds’ Fair. But the nature of it has changed along with our politics and hemlines.
The mythical figure of the serial killer in our culture has gone through the wringer of our changing standard of living. From the time of the penny dreadfuls and pulps, all the way to mainstream torture porn, serial killers in crime fiction transformed.

In the found footage genre, there are only a few that I would rank as being memorable and maybe even great. In that list, you’ll find movies like Chronicle, Zero Day and Trash Humpers. Now, I may have to amend that to include this anthology horror movie. Aside from hosting some really good up and coming filmmakers, V/H/S looks fresh and scary as hell. If you love vhs nostalgia, indie filmmakers and ambitious projects, then this film is a triple threat!

Lynne Ramsay's film depends for its impact on a growing distrust and fear of masculinity
By fairly common consent, We Need to Talk About Kevin has a hole at its heart. "Why?" Tilda Swinton's Eva is still asking her eponymous son in the film's closing minutes. She's had 18 years to work out the answer, so what chance have the rest of us in a mere 112 minutes?
Kevin's response isn't much help. "I used to think I knew; now I'm not so sure," he ventures. That could mean he was out to punish his unfeeling mum, but has come to wonder if he went a bit too far, since he's now prepared to submit to a hug. Or it could mean something else entirely. It wouldn't be the first time that he's strung Eva along.
This refusal to assign a clear motive to the instigator of the action is...

Ever since 1945′s Robert Oppenheimer-led Manhattan Project gave the world its first nuclear weapon, the nuclear arms race has run and run. Several nations are now in possession of viable nuclear weapons and despite the Cold War having ended 20 years ago, ridiculous numbers of wareheads and missiles remain active, able to be launched at the press of a button.

Lawrence Bender, the producer behind the Oscar-winning An Inconvenient Truth and Good Will Hunting, brings his considerable clout to bear in producing this fascinating and troubling documentary about the growth of the nuclear arms race. Artist Pablo Bronstein has taken over the Ica and temporarily remodelled it to disorienting effect, but you'll find no refuge in the cinema. Instead, you'll get a selection of great artists who've achieved similarly surreal architectural effects on celluloid. The weirdest ones seem to last the longest. Buñuel mischievously swapped dining rooms and lavatories for The Phantom Of Liberty's infamous dinner party, and prevented guests from leaving another one in The Exterminating Angel. There are spooky houses exerting sinister influences in the likes of Dario Argento's Inferno, Rivette's Celine And Julie Go Boating and Orson Welles-led oddity Malpertuis. In Repulsion, all Roman Polanski needed was a London apartment and Catherine Deneuve.

Lawrence Bender has produced such well regarded and award-laden films as Good Will Hunting and An Inconvenient Truth, as well as each of Quentin Tarantino’s films (though he’s not working with him on Django Unchained), yet he considers himself to be a political activist at heart, involving himself in documentaries in order to further an overall message that is close to his heart.

A new documentary, Countdown to Zero, highlights the many reasons why nuclear annihilation remains our biggest threat
We never loved the bomb, but we did at least learn to stop worrying about it. According to new documentary Countdown to Zero, though, we shouldn't have. As Lucy Walker's film details, there's even more to worry about today: terrorists seeking to acquire nuclear materials, former Soviet countries trying to sell them, nuclear stockpiles, the club of nuclear-capable countries expanding to include states such as North Korea, Iran and Pakistan. Countdown to Zero has been described as the Inconvenient Truth of nukes, though judging by its terrifying revelations, our species is destined to destroy itself by nuclear means long before climate change gets a chance.
"Unfortunately, there's nothing I learned making this film that made me less worried," says Walker. Like most British children of the 1980s, she remembers what it was...

Forget tortured vamps and flash-tearing mermaids, the scariest thing you'll see this year could well be Countdown To Zero. Don't believe us? Try watching this new clip from the documentary without being reminded of the Kubrickian madness of Dr. Strangelove or that bit in T2 when La goes all melty. Told you.Yup, the nuclear codes are easier to work out than your pincode. It's scary stuff. Fear not, though: Judgment Day is not necessarily pending. Produced by Lawrence Bender, Lucy Walker's doc is the spearhead of a global campaign for nuclear disarmament, Global Zero.
