Arts and social change organisation Big hART is developing a documentary project with domestic violence campaigner Rosie Batty, titled All of Us, set to follow the making of a stage show of the same name that sees both Batty and young women share their stories.
Already supported by Screen Tasmania, the doc extends upon Big hART’s family violence prevention initiative Project O, which works with teenage girls in regional, remote or high needs communities around Australia. Batty has been involved with the program for four years.
The film will follow both the work of the initiative and the making of a new theatre work, expected to tour nationally, that combines Batty’s story with that of these young women.
Directing the film is Big hART CEO Scott Rankin, who will write with Batty. Producing is Sophia Marinos, with development producer Angela Prior. Nicky Akehurst is the Dop, and Sally Biasiutti the editor.

Pharrell Williams hasn’t stopped running … on behalf of “Letter to My Godfather,” the original song he wrote for Netflix’s “The Black Godfather,” a documentary about legendary music executive Clarence Avant. Qualifying for the Oscars as a film with a theatrical release, the Emmys as a Netflix production and the Grammys as a work of music for visual media, it’s been on an awards campaign circuit since its June 2019 release.
Its journey began in campaigning for an Oscar, which involved fall Q&As with Academy members; a performance at the Nov. 3 Hollywood Film Awards, where Williams took to the stage with a full choir; an early December appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert”; followed by a top-of-the-year appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” All that promotion did get the song to the Academy Awards shortlist, but when the nominations were announced Jan. 13, its Oscar chances ended.

When the 2020 Emmy nominations were announced July 28, the biggest surprise was easily Zendaya landing her first career nomination. The 24-year-old performer earned a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series thanks to her work in HBO’s “Euphoria.” The high school drama aired its first season way back in summer 2019, so not many Emmy pundits had “Euphoria” or Zendaya on their radar for the 2020 Emmys. Fortunately, the show proved to be a buzzy word-of-mouth hit with viewers and Zendaya proved revelatory as the recovering drug addict Rue, so much so that she took home the prize over Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Laura Linney (“Ozark”), Olivia Colman (“The Crown”), Jodi Comer (last year’s category winner for “Killing Eve”), and Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”). Zendaya is now the youngest winner ever in the Best Drama Actress race. Comer previously held the record as she was 26 when she won in 2019.

Long before what is now referred to as the streaming wars began, Robert L. Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television (Bet) and Chairman of Rlj Entertainment, announced Umc — Urban Movie Channel, Rlj’s proprietary streaming network. Officially launched in February 2015 featuring “urban-themed” series and movies, the service, which is now known only as Umc, is part of a suite of channels and streamers owned by AMC Networks, after the media company acquired Rlj in late 2018.
A direct competitor to the more recognized brand in Bet+, which launched just last fall, Umc might be smaller in comparison, but it’s a characteristic that makes them much more flexible and far less averse to taking risks, especially when it comes to programming decisions. Additionally, having a five-year head start has allowed them the time to work through kinks that typically come with being a pioneer, which arguably gives them a leg-up when...

Single Ladies actress LisaRaye McCoy is speaking out about tensions on the set of the VH1 series with her former co-star, Stacey Dash.
The drama about a group of friends in Atlanta from different backgrounds ran from 2011 to 2015. Charity Shea, Travis Winfrey, and D.B. Woodside rounded out the main cast, with Denise Vasi later joining the show.
McCoy sat down for an interview with TV One’s autobiographical docuseries, Uncensored, and discussed an incident she said nearly forced her to lose her temper with Dash.
“One night when we were filming, she put her finger up in my face, and she said ‘you don’t tell me anything.’ Every bit of South Side Chicago was brewing in here,” McCoy said pointing to her stomach.
“It made me say, ‘Stacey, if you don’t get your finger out of my face!'” she recalled telling her co-star. “That was all I had to say.

YouTube could be the key to Will Smith finally earning a Primetime Emmy nomination — or win.
The superstar Formerly Known as the Fresh Prince has been nominated for two Academy Awards, five Golden Globes and one Screen Actors Guild Award, and has won four Grammys (out of eight nominations). Yet a Primetime Emmy nomination has so far eluded Smith.
That’s despite Smith’s long-running stint as the star of the hit 1990s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Smith’s other TV credits include executive producing Upn’s “All of Us.” But neither of those even got him a primetime nod. Smith technically was nominated in 1992 for a Daytime Emmy Award, in the outstanding special class program category for his part in the special “NBA All-Star Stay in School Jam,” but that’s it.
One explanation is obvious: After “Fresh Prince,” Smith mostly turned his attention to film. His...

Here’s the bad news: If you’re not one of Spectrum’s 14 million or so cable subscribers, you won’t be able to watch its first original series, the Bad Boys spinoff L.A.’s Finest. Or wait, actually, that might be the good news. Because L.A.’s Finest — premiering Monday, May 13 on Spectrum’s On Demand platform; I’ve seen the first three episodes — is a loud, dumb mess of a cop drama, loaded up with corny punchlines and incoherent plotting. So if you don’t have the ability to watch it… well, consider yourself lucky.

It was during a five-hour-plus flight back home from a work trip that I came across The Incredible Jessica James on Netflix (which I initially thought was the first season of a show and was heartbroken to find out I was wrong). The movie has everything I love in my flicks - a quirky (but not annoying) protagonist, an awkward love interest, and that modern millennial romance that makes us wince in secondhand embarrassment, while wishing we had that kind of love. Plus, Jessica James is played by Jessica Williams, who I basically want to be when I grow up. So it's safe to say that I was going to enjoy it. By the end of the movie, I was crying.
She's creative, smart, a little bitter, a lot jaded, full of swagger, and black. Just like me.
I wasn't crying because the movie is particularly heartbreaking...

Alfonso Ribeiro burst on the entertainment scene with the title role in Broadway’s “The Tap Dance Kid,” and earned his first Variety mention on Dec. 22, 1983, a rave review, when he was just barely 12 years old. He went on to star in his most recognizable role as the sweater-loving Carlton Banks on 1990’s comedy “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” opposite Will Smith. Since then, Ribeiro has dabbled in a little bit of everything, from reality competitions like “Dancing With the Stars” (which he won) to directing TV episodes (including comedies “All of Us” and “Are We There Yet?”) to his current gig as the host of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” — the big $100,000 episode of which aired Jan. 6. The multi-hyphenate isn’t going to stop anytime soon, and calls being an entertainer “all I’ve ever loved.”

At the 2018 Oscars, Frances McDormand, who won her second Best Actress Academy Award for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” asked all the female nominees to stand. Ten women will always be nominated by the academy: five for Best Actress and another five for Best Supporting Actress. Besides these other nine women, how many others were on their feet in the Dolby Theater?
Of the 20 non-gender specific categories, women were contenders in 17 of them; they were shut out of Original Score (5 men), Sound Editing (9 men) and Visual Effects (20 men). As you can see below, 47 women other than actresses were nominated at the 90th Academy Awards. Of these, only four won Oscars. By comparison, 151 men other than actors were nominated and 32 took home Oscars.
Only one category — Costume Design — had more women contending then men but the winner was a man: Mark Bridges (“Phantom Thread”), who also picked up the jet ski for the shortest acceptance speech.

With the sorry state of things as the current generation seems to be running things into the ground around the world, I approached last night’s 45th Student Academy Awards presentation at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theatre with the dream that perhaps a new generation’s voices might be able to lead us out of the darkness into hope and enlightenment as only the best filmmakers can do.
I wasn’t disappointed. If this batch of movies and young filmmakers are any indication there may be reason for optimism in the future , at least as far as movies go.
In all my years covering the awards scene and the Oscars somehow I never managed to attend one of these ceremonies but I am so glad I finally did. The various 19 student winners have not only made pertinent and moving films (judging by the subject matters...

The fashion world is in mourning as they come to terms with the tragic news that celebrated designer Kate Spade has passed away. The 55-year-old was the iconic visionary who founded the fashion brand Kate Spade and the New Yorker had some of the biggest names as her clients, including Kate Middleton and her younger sister, Pippa Middleton. The siblings were among many high-profile names who've been spotted donning one of Kate's unforgettable creations — from dresses, bags, and earrings. While Kate sold the company back in 2006, the fashion house continued to foster their royal connection. Their president, Deborah Lloyd, once told People, "The Duchess embodies all of the qualities of the Kate Spade New York girl — she is quick, curious, playful, and strong and she is an incredibly interesting woman, leading an incredibly interesting life. Being a Brit myself, this moment is particularly meaningful for me." Scroll down to see...

Ten women will always be nominated for Oscars: five for Best Actress and another five for Best Supporting Actress. At the 2018 Oscars, Frances McDormand, who won her second Best Actress Academy Award for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” asked all the female nominees to stand. As you can see from the video above, she asked rival acting nominee Meryl Streep (“The Post”) to lead the way and this 21-time Oscar nominee obliged. Besides the other eight actresses nominated, how many other women were on their feet in the Dolby theater?
Of the 20 non-gender specific categories, women were contenders in 17 of them; they were shut out of Original Score (5 men), Sound Editing (9 men) and Visual Effects (20 men). As you can see below, 47 women other than actresses were nominated at the 90th Academy Awards. Of these, only four won Oscars. By comparison, 151 men other than actors were nominated and 32 took home Oscars.

This year’s Oscar Week Shorts Program showcased a diverse group of talented filmmakers delivering crowd-pleasing and thoughtful short films. The evening kicked off with an extended, hilarious riff by the host Taika Waititi, director of Thor: Ragnarok and director/co-star of What We Do In the Shadows. Waititi was so annoyed by latecomers entering the Samuel Goldwyn Theater he yelled at them, “Where have you been?!” and recalled the pressure of being a short film nominee in 2004 while carrying the expectations of his native New Zealand on his shoulders.
His irreverence toward an Academy that let’s people wander around during his presentation and denies him Oscar gold kept the audience howling throughout his hosting duties.

Three of the most difficult categories to call every year at the Oscars are those of the short films. They lack precursor prizes and, in many cases, visibility. If you are not able to see these films before the Academy Awards on March 4, don’t worry: we’ve got you covered. Below is our take on the five nominees for Best Live Action Short.
A screening committee drawn from the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch members winnowed a record field of 165 entries for Best Live Action Short down to 10 semi-finalists. All members of the branch could attend December screenings in Los Angeles, London, New York and San Francisco and then cast preferential ballots for the five nominees.

The nominations for the 2018 Academy Awards are in and Guillermo del Toro's fantastic film, The Shape of Water, did pretty damn good as it leads the pack with thirteen of the nominations! Those include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay and more. This was one of my favorite movies of the year, so it was great to see it get a lot of love.
Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk ended up with eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. Jordan Peele's Get Out also landed a few nominations including Best Director, which was cool!
As expected, James Franco and his film The Disaster Artist got snubbed amid sexual misconduct allegations surrounding the actor.

Hitch 'em up: Overbrook dives deep into TV
Overbrook Entertainment is making a major push in television with the company's most ambitious development slate to date, which includes a series version of Will Smith's hit feature Hitch and a comedy starring OutKast's Big Boi.
"It is the most active season we've had in television," said Ken Stovitz, who joined Smith and James Lassiter as a partner at the company in May.
The slate, overseen by Heather Courtney, also includes Raw Materials, a relationship comedy for ABC from the Oscar-nominated writing duo Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel; Almost, a supernatural drama for A&E; a drama for FX about a "straight edge" punk crew; and Gimmee Twenty, a special starring investment guru Mellody Hobson, at ABC News.
During the past year, cable has been a major priority for Overbrook. It had been focused primarily on broadcast TV, where it landed its first series, the comedy All of Us.
In April, the company scored an animated series on BET. The Cipha, a futuristic hip-hop series about rappers with superpowers, is slated to premiere in 2008.
Additionally, Overbrook has the half-hour I Hate Pink, about a plain Jane in high school.

Scribe Bush, NL going on 'Mancation'
New Line is packing the cooler, throwing on some sunscreen and leaving for a Mancation. The studio has picked up the comedy pitch from writer Jared Bush, with studio-based Benderspink producing.
The story follows a guy who decides that marriage has drained his Little Brother's manhood, so he drags him on a testosterone-filled getaway to help him get it back.
Chris Bender and JC Spink are producing, with the company's Jake Weiner exec producing.
New Line's Cale Boyter and Sam Brown are overseeing.
The deal was in the mid-six figures.
Bush, a writer-producer on the CW's All of Us, and Benderspink recently teamed on the romantic comedy Save the Date, in development at New Line.
Benderspink is developing the comedy Torrente, a remake of the hit Spanish comedy, and the sci-fi thriller Y: The Last Man for New Line. The company has Guy Not Taken set up at DreamWorks and A Fistful of Candy at Columbia.
Bush is repped by CAA, Foursight Management and Rohner & Walerstein.

Smiths have laugh tracks for CW, ABC
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have set up two comedy projects, one at CW with Jack & Jill creator Randi Mayem Singer and one at ABC with Betsy Borns, who co-created All of Us with the couple.
The untitled CW project, from CBS Paramount Network TV and Overbrook Entertainment, is a single-camera half-hour about a group of mostly divorced mothers who live in a large apartment complex. From the point of view of a security guard who patrols the area, it focuses on the women's child-rearing problems and their dating lives.
"It's about making lunch and making love," Singer said.
Singer was one of several writers approached with the concept, a brainchild of Pinkett Smith, and she immediately responded.
"Single moms are nothing new, but it was the idea to set it in one of these communities that made it cohesive to me," Singer said. "The (apartment) development will be a character in the show in the way that New York City was a character in 'Sex and the City.' "
Singer is writing the project, which has received a script commitment from the network.

Fox's 'Idol' crushes network rivals Tuesday
American Idol beat everything in its path again on Tuesday, topping the combined ratings of its broadcast competition in the 8 p.m. hour. Fox's Idol brought in a whopping 26.9 million viewers and 11.5 rating/30 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. That was lofty enough to beat the combined demo averages of CBS' NCIS (13.4 million, 2.9/7), ABC's combo of My Wife & Kids (6.5 million, 2.1/6) and George Lopez (6.4 million, 2.2/5), NBC's Law & Order: Criminal Intent repeat (4.3 million, 1.4/4), WB's Gilmore Girls (5.3 million, 2.2/6) and UPN's All of Us (2.2 million, 0.9/2) and Eve (2.2 million, 0.9/2). At 9 p.m., Fox's numbers came back down to earth with drama House, MD (14.4 million, 5.7/14) losing nearly half of its lead-in audience. Still, the drama did a slightly better job of holding its audience throughout the hour than it did last week. CBS was No. 2 in the hour in viewers with its Dr. Phil: Romance Rescued special (11 million, 3.5/8) while ABC nosed past CBS in adults 18-49 with According to Jim (9.7 million, 3.8/9) and Rodney (8.9 million, 3.5/8).

Ostroff extols branding virtues
UPN entertainment president Dawn Ostroff cited strong branding as the key to rebuilding her network in a speech Tuesday afternoon at the Museum of Television and Radio Industry Forum Luncheon in Los Angeles. Applying the same brand-building skills she learned as executive vp entertainment at Lifetime has given the network a clearer identity with younger demographics. "In today's crowded media environment, branding has become more important," she said. Ostroff also extolled the virtues of letting celebrities dedicate themselves to programming of personal interest to them, including All of Us from executive producers Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. "Giving them the opportunity to do projects of passion was probably the best message we could put out," she said.

UPN sees glass as half-full
UPN may be having a tough time in the ratings so far this season, but there is a silver lining. Its rival, the WB Network, has been hit so hard that it makes UPN's woes seem almost mild in comparison. Down 17% in its core 18-34 demographic (to a 1.5 rating/5 share average for the season-to-date, Sept. 22-Dec. 19), UPN has nevertheless done reasonably well with a new block of ethnic comedies on Tuesdays this fall, including the freshman All of Us. And while it badly lagged the WB last year, the network has significantly narrowed the overall gap with its competitor this season (the WB is down 22%, to a 1.8). No wonder CBS chief Leslie Moonves, who also oversees UPN for parent company Viacom, finds some comfort in the numbers. "The good news for us is we're very close to the WB," Moonves said. "It was five-tenths (of a demo rating point margin last year), and now that's sort of cut in half." As for the percentage decline, Moonves noted that as a small network, UPN is naturally susceptible to dramatic statistical fluctuations. "When (a rating) goes down a tenth of a point, that's a lot because the base is so low," he said.

'Rock' rolls on as UPN plays back 9
UPN has picked up its new comedy Rock Me Baby for a full season. The network has given a back-nine episode order to the Warner Bros. TV series, which in the Tuesday 9-9:30 p.m. slot has posted a 17% improvement vs. last year in total viewers as well as in the network's target demographic of adults 18-34. With the order for Rock Me, UPN has secured four of its five new series, including All of Us, Eve and Jake 2.0, for a full first season, with freshman comedy The Mullets still on hiatus.
