Over four decades, the charismatic Karyo carved out a career as “the quintessential French sex symbol — strong, handsome, softly spoken and given to philosophy,...

Danny Boyle Reveals the Real Reason Why He Didn't Make 'Alien: Resurrection'
Image
Danny Boyle, the director of films like Trainspotting, The Beach, and 28 Days Later, has revealed that he was supposed to make the fourth film in the Alien series, the sci-fi horror franchise created by Ridley Scott in 1979. The director said he was happy to be involved in the film, which eventually became Alien Resurrection. However, he ultimately decided to abandon the project because he felt he wasn't "the right guy" to direct the horror sequel.

Boyle is currently promoting his most recent feature, 28 Years Later. The zombie horror movie is the third in the franchise, and it marks Boyle's official return to the series. He directed 28 Days Later in 2002, the groundbreaking movie that revolutionized the zombie genre. He wasn't involved in the sequel, 28 Weeks Later, but almost 20 years later, he has decided to revisit the post-apocalyptic horror franchise.

The director sat down with The Hollywood Reporter...

‘A Private Life’ Review: A Delightfully Paired Jodie Foster and Daniel Auteuil Escape Injury in a Messy but Pleasurable Genre Collision
Image
Caught between sophisticated comedy and silly fluff, between Hitchcockian mystery and zany amateur sleuth caper, A Private Life (Vie Privée) is a lot more fun than it probably deserves to be thanks to the disarming chemistry of its seasoned leads, Jodie Foster and Daniel Auteuil. Rebecca Zlotowski’s latest doesn’t have the intoxicating sun-kissed sensuality of An Easy Girl or the emotional complexity of Other People’s Children, her last two films. This one is too busy careening all over the tonal map for any of that. What it does have is the French director’s customary light touch; it’s chaos with charm.

Foster’s French — at least to these ears — sounds impeccable and this is her first feature in the language since 2004’s A Very Long Engagement. She jumps into it with a spiky vitality and an unexpected playfulness that buoy the movie as much as Zlotowski’s zippy direction.

Jodie Foster Overcomes Fear to Lead French Thriller Vie Privée at Cannes
Jodie Foster
Jodie Foster confessed she was “too scared” to tackle a lead role in a French-language film until director Rebecca Zlotowski’s invitation for Vie Privée proved irresistible, marking Foster’s first starring turn speaking French since 2004’s A Very Long Engagement. The psychological thriller premiered out of competition at Cannes on May 20, where Foster’s portrayal of Lilian Steiner—a Paris-based psychoanalyst drawn into a murder investigation—earned an eight-minute standing ovation.

Filmed last autumn in Paris and Normandy, Vie Privée reunites Foster with screenwriters Anne Berest and Gaëlle Macé, with Frederic Jouve producing under Les Films Velvet and France 3 Cinéma. Cinematographer George Lechaptois captures both the city’s elegance and the story’s undercurrent of menace, while Robin Coudert’s score underlines Lilian’s unraveling as she challenges official conclusions about her patient’s apparent suicide.

At Cannes, foster’s fluency in French surprised critics and attendees alike.

Why Jodie Foster Hasn’t Acted More In French Films Like ‘A Private Life’: “I Was Too Scared” – Cannes
Image
It’s not often that we get to watch Jodie Foster in a French-speaking lead role, which makes her latest Cannes film premiere, A Private Life, all the more intriguing.

She has the chops: Foster studied at Lycée Français in Los Angeles, becoming fluent in French. In Rebecca Zlotowski’s latest directorial, she plays renowned psychiatrist Lilian Steiner who learns about the death of one of her patients, and becomes deeply troubled. Convinced that it was murder, she decides to investigate.

The pic reps Foster’s first French-language role in two decades after Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s wartime romance A Very Long Engagement in 2005 before which she had a handful of smaller roles in French pics. The 2x Oscar winner has had other titles here at Cannes before including Money Monster (2016), Bugsy Malone (1976), Taxi Driver (1976) and Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1975).

“This is something I wanted to do for a long time,...

Jodie Foster Says She Was Offered Lead Roles in French Films Before ‘Vie Privée’ but Was ‘Too Scared’: The Dialogue ‘Was a Huge Challenge for Me’
Image
Jodie Foster revealed that she’s been offered leading roles in French films before making “Vie Privée,” but was “too scared” to take them on. The Oscar winner is fluent in the language, having attended a French school growing up in Los Angeles.

“I had secondary parts [in French films] before, but I was actually afraid,” Foster said during “Vie Privée’s” Cannes press conference. “A number of directors offered me projects but I was too scared to act in French. I thought someone who was more familiar with French should do so. But I don’t really remember how things worked out this time around.”

Earlier in the press conference, Foster — who spoke in French nearly the entire time — said leading a French film was something she had “wanted to do for a long time,” but learning all the dialogue was a “huge challenge.”

“The great thing is that when I act in French,...

‘A Private Life’ Review: Jodie Foster Goes French in Wry Murder Mystery Thriller
Image
Walking out of Tuesday’s Cannes premiere, a local remarked how delightfully New York-y “A Private Life” felt. At first, the comment struck me as odd – Gallic spirit so suffuses this Paris-set cerebral thriller that even star Jodie Foster spends most of the film drinking wine, puffing on cigs, and speaking in la langue de Molière. But I could also see what my colleague meant, given director Rebecca Zlotowski’s choice to plays her murder mystery as a wry and Woody Allen-esque riff on neuroses.

Flexing her French-language skills for the first time since Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s “A Very Long Engagement,” Jodie Foster ably slips into the role of an expat shrink, and thankfully so, because the filmmaker wrote the film for the American star. And so it should come with little surprise that playing Dr. Liliane Steiner plays to Foster’s strengths; hitting notes of head-strong fragility, she...

Jodie Foster-Starring ‘Vie Privée’ Debuts With 10-Minute Ovation In Cannes
Image
Director Rebecca Zlotowski and star Jodie Foster unveiled their collaboration Vie Privée (A Private Life) out of competition here in Cannes on Tuesday evening, greeted by a 10-minute ovation.

Foster plays renowned psychiatrist Lilian Steiner in the French-language mystery. When Lilian learns of the death of one of her patients, she is deeply troubled. Convinced that it was murder, she decides to investigate.

Also starring are Daniel Auteuil, Virginie Efira, Mathieu Amalric, Vincent Lacoste and Luana Bajrami.

Sony Pictures Classics acquired North America and Latin America rights in February on the film that Zlotowski also co-wrote. Goodfellas completed a raft of international deals earlier this year. Ad Vitam has French distribution with a release planned later in 2025.

This is Zlotowski’s sixth film, and her second in the Cannes Official Selection as director after 2013’s Un Certain Regard title Grand Central.

Foster told the festival of meeting with Zlotowski, “We reviewed the whole film,...

Jodie Foster Embraces ‘Vie Privée’ Director as French Murder Mystery Gets 8-Minute Cannes Standing Ovation
Image
Jodie Foster, flashing a broad smile, embraced director Rebecca Zlotowski at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday night as “Vie Privée” scored an impressive eight-minute standing ovation. The crowd cheered wildly for Foster even as the actress kept gesturing towards Zlotowski, as if reminding the audience that this was the filmmaker’s moment to bask in the applause. “Vie Privée” is an off-beat mystery about a psychotherapist who becomes convinced that her patient’s suicide was actually a murder — think of it as “Only Murders in the Building” with a dose of ennui.

The crowd for the film was certainly star-studded, a sign of the esteem in which Foster is held. Gael García Bernal and Alejandro González Iñárritu posed for pictures before the screening, while Scarlett Johansson strode the red carpet with her husband, Colin Jost. Johansson was accompanied by June Squibb, the 95-year-old star of her feature directorial debut,...

‘Vie Privée’ Review: A Remarkable Jodie Foster Is Trying To Solve A Mystery, And She’s Doing It Completely In French – Cannes Film Festival
Image
Jodie Foster has plenty of Oscars, Emmys, Golden Globes and more to prove she can do just about anything on screen, and now she is taking a step further and doing it all in French.

That part is not a huge surprise. On one occasion in 2004 she appeared in a supporting role speaking in French in A Very Long Engagement, which starred Audrey Tatou. But now for the first time she has a starring role in a French production, Vie Privée (A Private Life), that premiered tonight out of competition as an official selection of the Cannes Film Festival, a most appropriate place to debut this new landmark in Foster’s career which just continues to dazzle.

Foster plays psychiatrist Lilian Steiner, a rock-solid professional who has been doing this work a very long time. But when she learns a longtime patient, Paula, whom...

The Director of Amlie Created a Stinging War Movie Even Rom-Com Fans Will Love
Image
Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the director who gave us the enchanting 2001 global hit Amlie, has a distinctive style that makes painterly cinema. His pictures turn everyday moments into poetic visual expressions. Right from his early films, for instance in Delicatessen, Jeunet pictures ordinary activities like lovebirds on a squeaking bed, a woman bowing and plucking a cello, a boy pumping a bicycle tire, or a tailor sewing to create whimsical art. For Juenet, cinema is a blank canvas on which filmmakers like himself can create infinite paintings. After Amlie, Jeunet reunited with Audrey Tautou again, this time in the stinging 2004 World War I movie A Very Long Engagement, which has enough room not just for fans of war films, but also romcom fans as well.

Léa Seydoux was originally meant to star opposite Gaspard Ulliel in Bertrand Bonello’s audacious sci-fi love story “The Beast.” But the beloved César-winning French actor died at age 37 in January 2022 after a skiing accident while the film was still in pre-production, and he was posthumously replaced by George MacKay.

Seydoux previously starred alongside Ulliel, revered for roles in movies including Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s “A Very Long Engagement” and Bonello’s own “Saint Laurent,” in Xavier Dolan’s 2016 Cannes winner “It’s Only the End of the World.” Seydoux, who recently spoke with IndieWire about her multiple roles in “The Beast” as a woman confronted across centuries by a devastating impossible romance, did not get the chance to talk to Ulliel about “The Beast” before filming. He did, however, leave her a WhatsApp voice message praising her turn in Bruno Dumont’s media satire “France,” a box office hit in France...

With its iconic, surreal imagery, gallows humour and its cast of warped characters, Delicatessen marked the breakthrough collaboration between celebrated directors Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro (Dante 01). Equal parts horror, comedy and dystopian fantasia, Delicatessen is still one of the most original and influential films of its time.

Which Country Will ‘The Zone of Interest’ Represent for Oscars International Feature Race?
Image
A24’s “The Zone of Interest” is spoken in German, but was filmed in Poland and is written and directed by a British auteur. So what does that mean for its prospects for best international feature at the Oscars?

Written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, “The Zone of Interest” premiered last week at the Cannes Film Festival where it emerged as an early favorite for the coveted Palme d’Or after receiving widespread acclaim.

The film tells the story of a commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) who strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp that was one of the sites where six million Jews were murdered.

In the past few years, it seems as if more non-English language features are being submitted that aren’t spoken in the country’s native tongue.

David Fincher
David Fincher’s Favorite Film in Years is Albert Serra’s Pacifiction
David Fincher
Last month, the 48th César Awards ceremony took place and alongside trophies given to recent releases, David Fincher was bestowed the Honorary César. It looks like the director––who is in post-production on his Michael Fassbender-led crime thriller The Killer ahead of a November release––took the honor seriously as he watched all the Best Film nominees: Pacifiction, Forever Young, Rise, The Innocent, the evening’s winner The Night of the 12th.

Across the viewings, the only one he appreciated was reportedly Albert Serra’s Pacifiction. Star of the film and César Best Actor winner Benoît Magimel told Allocine that he went to a dinner featuring Fincher and Brad Pitt, who relayed the kind words about the film. Magimel said, “[Brad Pitt told me]: ‘David Fincher is pretty tough. In twenty years, I must have seen him about five times happy to see a film. Meaning, he doesn’t like anything.’ He said to me,...

How ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ Leaned Into Meat Grinder Brutality of Battle Scenes
Image
Even with predecessors such as “Paths of Glory,” “A Very Long Engagement,” “1917” and of course Lewis Milestone’s 1930 best picture winner of the same name, director Edward Berger’s adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s bestseller “All Quiet on the Western Front” conveys the meat-grinder brutality — the violence, the blood, and the mud — of trench warfare unlike almost any film in the history of the medium.

“These kids are chewed up by the merciless war machine,” says Berger. “They sign up for this war full of hopes and ideals, but very quickly they realize that they have lost everything in the mud, especially their innocence and their youth.”

Before Berger brought the story to life on screen — for the first time in its native German — co-screenwriter Lesley Paterson spent years trying to capture a feeling that placed the audience in the heat of the conflict.

“There’s a distance...

‘More Than Ever’ Review: Gaspard Ulliel’s Final Film Is About the Cruelty of Death
Image
When it was announced five months ago that Gaspard Ulliel — the wolfishly handsome beau of films including “A Very Long Engagement”, “Saint Laurent” and “Sibyl” — died suddenly in a freak skiing accident at 37, peopled mourned the world over for one the most charming actors working in contemporary Gallic cinema. With his good-natured, sleepy grin and icy blue eyes that concealed a glint of malice, it made perfect sense in his smattering of sly roles that his trademark dimple was actually, in fact, a scar.

And it’s a perverse coincidence that his final feature film is entirely concerned with our hopelessness in the face of the inevitable onslaught of death. Perhaps talk about Emily Atef’s bleakly funereal “More Than Ever” as an abrupt bookend to Ulliel’s career will overshadow the fact that , giving space for its subject to be selfish even if that means opting for the cruelest...

Moon Knight Team Pay Tribute to Late Midnight Man Actor
Ethan Hawke, F. Murray Abraham, Oscar Isaac, Antonia Salib, May Calamawy, Karim El Hakim, Saba Mubarak, Sofia Asir, and Michael Benjamin Hernandez in मून नाइट (2022)
Viewers of Marvel’s Moon Knight may have noticed that episode 3 was dedicated to the memory of French actor Gaspard Ulliel, who plays black market antiquities collector Anton Mogart in the episode. He ends up clashing with Layla El-Faouly (May Calamawy) and Marc Spector (Oscar Isaac) – the latter in and out of the Moon Knight suit — over a sarcophagus containing the next clue to the whereabouts of Ammit’s tomb.

Ulliel, who made his feature film debut in 2001’s The Brotherhood of the Wolf but was perhaps best known to American audiences as a young Hannibal Lecter in the 2007 film Hannibal Rising, was tragically killed at the age of 37 on January 18, 2022 in a skiing accident in Savoie, France.

Ulliel was not as well known on this side of the Atlantic outside of his lead role in the Hannibal Lecter origin story. His work as the still-forming Hannibal was given favorable...

2022 Oscars Best Cinematography nominees include two potential record breakers
Image
The films in contention for the 2022 Best Cinematography Oscar are “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” “The Power of the Dog,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” and “West Side Story.” Our odds currently favor “Dune” (10/3) taking the prize, followed in order by “The Power of the Dog” (18/5), “The Tragedy of Macbeth” (4/1), “West Side Story” (9/2), and “Nightmare Alley” (9/2).

This is the seventh time that Janusz Kaminski (“West Side Story”) has vied for this award, making him one of the 26 most-nominated lensers ever. With the exception of “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” (2008), all of the films for which he has been recognized were directed by Steven Spielberg, with the preceding five being “Schindler’s List” (1994), “Amistad” (1998), “Saving Private Ryan” (1999), “War Horse” (2012), and “Lincoln” (2013). He finished first in the 1994 and 1999 races and could now become the 11th person to achieve a third cinematography win.

Bruno Delbonnel (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”) has five past bids to his name...

ASC to Celebrate Oscar-Nominated DPs With Small Scale Ceremony
Image
When the ASC launched its awards in 1986, a single statue was given for feature film cinematography, presented by Gregory Peck to Jordan Cronenweth for his work on Francis Ford Coppola’s “Peggy Sue Got Married.”

Now, 36 years later, the American Society of Cinematographers Awards is returning to the smaller scale of yore even as it promises to celebrate a wide range of image-makers. The ceremony will take place on March 20th at the ASC Clubhouse, the org’s modest, if stylish, headquarters in Hollywood, rather than in a cavernous ballroom.

But even though ASC has reduced the scale of the event this year, the scope of the awards has continued to expanded significantly since that first evening. Honors now go to TV categories as well as documentary. The ASC’s Spotlight Award joined the parade in 2013 to recognize films seen mainly on the festival circuit, in limited theatrical release or outside the U.

Bigbug Review: Jean-Pierre Jeunet Returns with a Limp Futuristic Social Satire
Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Jean-Pierre Jeunet put his stamp across the 1990s and 2000s with a unique blend of zany personality, thoughtful character portraits, and sharp, multi-dimensional humor. So much was running in films like Delicatessen and The City of Lost Children, both co-directed with Marc Caro, that they could have boiled over, yet somehow remained focused works that played completely as the ownerships of their creators. After a brief misfire when stepping into the world of Hollywood blockbusters with 1997’s Alien: Resurrection—an early forebear of the “indie director to studio tentpole” pipeline that gobbles up every promising young filmmaker these days—Jeunet found his peak as a solo director in the early aughts: Amélie and A Very Long Engagement brought his particular style into a new era with remarkable sophistication and retention of his characteristic charm.

Then a curious thing happened. Despite being a beloved international director arguably at the height of his career,...

ASC Predictions: Cinematographers Expected to Nominate Second Woman Ever; Are There Too Many Black-and-White Films?
Image
The race for best cinematography is among the most competitive races this year at the Oscars. Black-and-white dramas, sci-fi dazzlers and Hollywood blockbusters are among the contenders, and it’s not entirely sure where it all might land. The American Society of Cinematographers, which announces its nominees tomorrow, will set a tone leading up to the opening of Oscar nomination voting, which begins on Thursday.

From ASC’s theatrical releases category to the Oscars, the track record averages about four out of five matches every year. Past ASC selections like “First Man” (Linus Sandgren), “Ford v Ferrari” (Phedon Papamichael), and last year’s “Cherry” (Newton Thomas Sigel) failed to transition to the Academy in favor of “Never Look Away” (Caleb Deschanel), “The Lighthouse” (Jarin Blaschke) and “Judas and the Black Messiah” (Sean Bobbitt). The last time they perfectly aligned was in 2017.

Over 93 years of the Academy Awards, Rachel Morrison is...

Hollywood and the French film industry are paying tribute to French actor Gaspard Ulliel.

The actor, who stars in Marvel’s upcoming “Moon Knight” series, died on Wednesday following a skiing accident. He was 37.

Gaspard began acting while still at school. At the age of 12 he appeared in French TV movie “Une Femme En Blanc” (“A Woman in White”) in an uncredited role. In 2007 he took on his first major English-speaking role in “Hannibal Rising,” playing Hannibal, and in 2014 played fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent in the critically acclaimed film “Saint Laurent.”

He will make one of his final on-screen appearances in Marvel’s upcoming Disney Plus series “Moon Knight,” in which Ulliel played Midnight Man opposite Oscar Isaac.

‘Bigbug’ Trailer: Jean-Pierre Jeunet Makes Netflix Debut with Raunchy Robot Comedy
Image
Academy Award-nominated “Amelie” and “A Very Long Engagement” director Jean-Pierre Jeunet hasn’t released a feature film since 2013’s “The Young and Prodigious T. S. Spivet.” But the always visually bonkers director of films including the swooningly odd “Delicatessen” and the gonzo “Alien Resurrection” is back with his latest film, “Bigbug.” The artificial intelligence comedy is hitting Netflix on February 11, and the streamer has released a first trailer for the film. Watch below.

Here’s the appropriately weird synopsis, courtesy of Netflix:

In 2050, artificial intelligence is everywhere. So much so that humanity relies on it to satisfy its every need and every desire – even the most secret and wicked…

In a quiet residential area, four domestic robots suddenly decide to take their masters hostage in their own home. Locked together, a not-quite-so-blended family, an intrusive neighbour and her enterprising sex-robot are now forced to put up with each other in an increasingly hysterical atmosphere!
