Murphy died on December 20, 2009, and Katie O’Grady, who worked alongside her on her final film Something Wicked, described Murphy as being like “a little bird you wanted to be around and you wanted to help.”

O’Grady told People magazine that Murphy’s cast and crew were all concerned and mindful of Murphy’s physical and mental condition, and tried to be “soft” with her while on set. O’Grady recalled the late actress looking “frail” and noticeably “going through a hard time” while filming the movie.

8 Mile was originally released in theaters in 2002, telling the true-to-life story of rapper Marshall "Eminem" Mathers (named Jimmy Smith Jr./B-Rabbit in the film) as he navigates his dreams of being a professional musician while dealing with a life of poverty in inner-city Detroit. 

While the film ends just before Mathers' character gets his big break, that first bit of exposure shown in the musical drama was just the beginning for the real-life rapper. Eminem has gone on to sell millions of records, even supplying music for hit movies like the Venom franchise.

The Belfast rappers’ riotous semi-biopic adds an Irish-language twist to a sub-genre that ranges from 8 Mile and Straight Outta Compton to Patti Cake$

The list of hip-hop acts who have starred in their own biopic is a short one, and it has perhaps its unlikeliest entry in Kneecap. The spiky Belfast trio’s pro-republican protest rap – much of it pointedly in the Irish language – has made them cult figures on home turf, and comedian turned film-maker Rich Peppiatt’s ebullient film, simply titled Kneecap, aims to do the same internationally. Avoiding a lot of self-important biographical tropes as it depicts their scrappy rise to fame and lays out their blunt political principles, it could easily be mistaken for fiction, with its knockabout tone and heightened comedy, though that just helps it as a mythmaking exercise. As in much of rap culture, being a little larger than life is the point.

Mexican cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto will receive the Distinguished Filmmaker Award. M. David Mullen will receive the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Mentor Award.

Prieto has worked on blockbuster films and critically-acclaimed independents. His credits range from Martin Scorsese’s upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon” to Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” Prieto first found success with director Alejandro González Iñárritu in 2000s films like “Babel,” “21 Grams,” and “Amores Perros.” He has shown versatility across genres with work on movies such as “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Argo,” and “8 Mile.”

Prieto is set to make his directorial debut with an adaptation of Juan Rulfo’s novel “Pedro Paramo.” He also received a 2024 MTV Video Music Award nomination for his cinematography on a Taylor Swift music video. The Icg says Prieto represents excellence in his field.

Killers of the Flower Moon and The Irishman cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto will be honored with the Distinguished Filmmaker Award at the 26th annual Emerging Cinematographer Awards (Eca), the International Cinematographers Guild (Icg) announced on Wednesday.

Cinematographer M. David Mullen will also be awarded the ASC Mentor Award.

Prieto has been nominated for four Academy Awards for his work on Killers of the Flower Moon, The Irishman, Silence and Brokeback Mountain. His other credits include Barbie, The Wolf of Wall Street, Argo and 8 Mile. He was also nominated for a 2024 MTV Video Music Award for his work on Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight” music video. His next project, his feature film directorial debut, is an adaptation of Juan Rulfo’s novel Pedro Paramo.

Mullen has received two American Cinematographers (ASC) Awards and three Emmy Awards for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, as well as two IFP Independent Spirit Awards nominations for Twin Falls Idaho and Northfolk.

Universal is ready to hit filmgoers with the story of pop star Britney Spears’ life.

In a highly competitive situation, the studio has landed the rights to the singer’s 2023 best-selling memoir The Woman in Me. Jon M. Chu, who is helming the studio’s forthcoming two-part Wicked feature adaptation, is attached to direct. Marc Platt (Wicked, La La Land) is set to produce.

Former Netflix film head Scott Stuber has closed a deal with Amazon MGM Studios to relaunch the United Artists label and finance and release features from his new production company.

The arrangement includes a first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios and will see Stuber based on the Culver City lot, producing several films a year under the UA label for release theatrically and on Prime Video.
