Reality TV enthusiasts are in for a treat. Netflix is putting a strong focus on this genre with the return of Love Is Blind for its eighth season, along with the debut of Celebrity Bear Hunt, a fresh competition-based reality show. For those who prefer a gripping thriller, Netflix will drop Apple Cider Vinegar, a new series premiering on February 6 that’s worth keeping an eye on.

In other big news, the highly popular series Cobra Kai will release its final batch of five episodes this month, marking the end of the TV series. While it’s bittersweet for fans, this isn’t the last we’ll see of Daniel Larusso, as he’s set to appear in an upcoming Karate Kid movie hitting theaters later this year.

Beyond these highlights, Netflix is also adding plenty of films and shows to its catalog.

A critically acclaimed 2014 historical drama climbed streaming charts following a related national holiday, becoming a success just one day later. Historical dramas have depicted plenty of important events throughout history, many of which are real events that had an important impact on the world. Today, in partnership with production company Rsa, Netflix revealed the trailer and premiere date for Surviving Black Hawk Down, a 360-degree telling of the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, whose events served as inspiration for Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down.

The three-part documentary series will debut globally on Netflix on February 10, 2025.

Surviving Black Hawk Down tells the gripping real story of the horror and heroism behind the events that inspired Ridley Scott’s Academy Award-winning film Black Hawk Down, blending raw, immersive storytelling with first-person interviews from both sides of The Battle of Mogadishu.

Today, in partnership with Rsa, Netflix announced the trailer and premiere date for Surviving Black Hawk Down, a three-part 360-degree telling of the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, whose events served as inspiration for Ridley Scott’s Academy Award-winning film Black Hawk Down, which starred Josh Hartnett. The description of the events revisited in this film reads, “On Oct. 3, 1993, when an American task force was sent out to capture two of Aidid’s lieutenants, his militia retaliated, managing to take down two Black Hawk helicopters that had been assisting from above. With each downed helicopter, soldiers were dispatched to recover the men who had been inside each aircraft, turning what had been a military strike operation into a rescue mission.”

Starring Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor and Eric Bana, the pic followed the journey of the U.S. sending special forces into Somalia to destabilize the government and bring food and humanitarian aid to the starving population. The group used Black Hawk helicopters to lower the soldiers onto the ground.

Chicago – Another side of actor Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”) emerges this weekend in a Chicago premiere of his latest film, “The Performance,” at the AMC River East theaters on Saturday, December 14th at 5pm. Jeremy Piven portrays Harold May, a gifted but underemployed tap dancer in 1930s New York City whose early success is getting swallowed by The Depression. Ewan McGregor's spy thriller accurately depicts the Russian mafia in one clip that an expert calls the "most dangerous and the scariest." The Scottish actor is widely known for his portrayal of the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy – including The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith – which grossed nearly $2 billion combined at the box office from 1999 to 2005. In 2022, Ewan McGregor reprised the role in the Disney+ miniseries, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Outside Star Wars, McGregor has showcased his versatility in films from a wide range of genres, starting with his breakout role as a drug addict in Trainspotting. This game, which was developed by Team Jade, a Tencent subsidiary, seems to be very different from the first generation of PC shooters from the 1990s and early 2000s. The inspiration for the new Delta Force is fairly obvious, as it looks a lot like a Battlefield clone. But in some ways, it’s far superior to Battlefield 2042.

Ridley Scott is one of the most respected and powerful filmmakers working in Hollywood, and has been for decades. Meanwhile, Henry Cavill, the star of "Man of Steel" and "The Witcher," is currently one of the biggest actors in the business. One would imagine a team up between these two would result in something major. Well, that collaboration did happen back in 2006 and all it resulted in, sad to say, is a big flop that effectively killed the production company that backed it.

The movie in question is "Tristan & Isolde," a historical epic that was once a passion project for Scott. The director loves historical epics to this day, having recently directed the blockbuster "Gladiator II," a sequel to his 2000 Best Picture-winner. Good things can happen when Scott is in the director's chair. Unfortunately, Scott was merely a producer on this film.

FX's The Bear offers a gritty look into the human condition through the eyes of the masterminds behind the most ambitious restaurant in Chicago, and throw show is filled with pop culture references, many of which come from Cousin Richie. The Emmy-winning series takes a deep look at each of its characters, developing everyone's backstories, personal interests, and idiosyncrasies as it progresses. Adam Somner, a respected assistant director and producer for filmmakers including Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Paul Thomas Anderson, Alejandro Inarritu and Ridley Scott, died Wednesday of thyroid cancer in Studio City. He was 57.

Most recently, Somner served as producer and assistant director on Anderson’s upcoming Warner Bros. film starring Leonardo Di Caprio. He was part of the producing team for Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza,” which was nominated for a best picture Oscar.

Born in the U.K., Somner got his start assisting on films such as “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” before moving into assistant directing. He was third assistant director on Spielberg’s “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” and continued working with the director on numerous films including “West Side Story,” “Ready Player One,” “Lincoln,” “Munich” and “War of the Worlds.”

War movies have been a staple of Hollywood cinema almost since movies were invented. The war movie genre covers everything from historical conflicts and those in the present day, to even sci-fi imaginings of wars to come. Though the genre is perhaps most often associated with historical conflicts like World War II, World War I, and the Vietnam War, war movies that depict more recent conflicts, such as those in the Middle East, have also broken through as seminal entries.

Some notable recent war movies include Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down (2001), which chronicles a real-life incident during the Battle of Mogadishu, and Sam Mendes' Jarhead (2005), which follows a Marine's journey during the Persian Gulf War. Green Zone (2010), American Sniper (2014), Lone Survivor (2013), The Outpost (2019), and Zero Dark Thirty (2012) all take very different looks at similarly recent conflicts. One 2012 film, however, has largely fallen by the wayside when it comes to war movie genre history.

Denzel Washington is determined to get Ridley Scott his long “overdue” Oscar.

Washington, who reunites with Scott for “Gladiator II” almost 20 years after 2007’s “American Gangster,” told The Hollywood Reporter that Scott not having won Best Director is almost criminal.

“Ridley is overdue,” Washington said. “How can he not have won an Oscar? That doesn’t even make sense. I don’t believe it, actually.”

Scott’s original 2000 “Gladiator” won Best Picture, with star Russell Crowe winning Best Actor. Scott was up for Best Director, having been nominated in the category previously with “Thelma & Louise” and again with “Black Hawk Down.” Scott has won BAFTA Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and Primetime Emmy Awards, just not an Academy Award yet.

And Washington is ready to make 2025 Scott’s year.

Washington said to “BBC Radio 1” that Scott not having an Oscar is proof that the Academy can’t do their “job” recognizing talent.

An enterprising surveyor of genre and tone, Ridley Scott has earned the admiration of audiences and critics alike with a seemingly unending interest in exploring the outermost limits of his art form. The British director broke onto the scene in 1977 with “The Duellists,” a French period drama starring Harvey Keitel and Keith Carradine set during the Napoleonic Wars. He returns to the early 19th century with Joaquin Phoenix as its namesake historical figure with the epic “Napoleon,” in theaters November 22.

“I first became aware of Ridley Scott with his film ‘The Duellists,'” Francis Ford Coppola recently said of Scott’s debut in an Instagram post. “I was impressed, and realizing he was my contemporary began following his work, which was prodigious to say the least. “Gladiator II” (Paramount) is expected to gross over $60 million when it open this week in the U.S./Canada. If so, that will be a strong start for Ridley Scott’s 29th feature in his 45-year career.

With a budget reported to be somewhere around $250 million-$300 million, it will need all of that and more. While this may be his fourth film to cost over over $200 million (adjusting to current dollar value), “Gladiator II” appears to be the highest spend of Scott’s career.

We surveyed all 28 previous Scott features, calculating their grosses and budgets at 2024 values. And while a $60 million “Gladiator II” opening would be a record on paper, that only works if you don’t adjust his track record to current dollars and ticket prices.

The 2022 action drama sequel Top Gun: Maverick is one of the highest-grossing and most universally-acclaimed action movies of all time, and it could have looked very different if the original plan for the movie's direction had actually come to pass. After many years in development, the director's chair for Maverick was eventually filled by Joseph Kosinski, who previously was most widely recognized for his work with CGI-heavy movies like Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, and Only the Brave.
