Netflix has revealed its lineup for February 2025.
Reality TV enthusiasts are in for a treat. Netflix is putting a strong focus on this genre with the return of Love Is Blind for its eighth season, along with the debut of Celebrity Bear Hunt, a fresh competition-based reality show. For those who prefer a gripping thriller, Netflix will drop Apple Cider Vinegar, a new series premiering on February 6 that’s worth keeping an eye on.
In other big news, the highly popular series Cobra Kai will release its final batch of five episodes this month, marking the end of the TV series. While it’s bittersweet for fans, this isn’t the last we’ll see of Daniel Larusso, as he’s set to appear in an upcoming Karate Kid movie hitting theaters later this year.
Beyond these highlights, Netflix is also adding plenty of films and shows to its catalog.

A critically acclaimed 2014 historical drama climbed streaming charts following a related national holiday, becoming a success just one day later. Historical dramas have depicted plenty of important events throughout history, many of which are real events that had an important impact on the world. Some of the best historical drama movies of all time include Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List, Mel Gibson's Braveheart, and some reflecting more modern events, such as Black Hawk Down. These films have stood the test of time as important parts of film history as a whole.
However, there have also been movies about particular instances in American history that have proven to be important and timely. This includes stories about civil rights, everything from the 2013 biopic 12 Years a Slave, to the 2013 drama Lee Daniels' The Butler. These films underscore the regrettable elements of the United States' history, but continue to resonate because of...

"I was sure my family were dead." Netflix has unveiled a trailer for Surviving Black Hawk Down, a 3-episode docu series that will be streaming on Netflix starting in February. The doc is a "360-degree telling of the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, whose events served as inspiration for Ridley Scott's Academy Award winning film Black Hawk Down." It has been 24 years since Black Hawk Down opened in theaters (back in 2001) and yet somehow now is apparently the right time to revisit it. I mean, it is a great action movie, but this all seems strange. Surviving Black Hawk Down tells the gripping real story of the horror and heroism behind the events – blending raw, immersive doc storytelling with first-person interviews from both sides of The Battle of Mogadishu. Makers Rsa add "[we] are thrilled to bring this compelling story to a new audience with Netflix, almost 25 years after Ridley’s iconic movie.

Netflix’s Surviving Black Hawk Down is a new docuseries that explores the real-world event that inspired Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down movie. The series recounts the events of the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, a two-day battle between the United States and the Somali National Alliance. The brutal battle saw the most Americans killed in one engagement since the Vietnam War decades earlier—18—as well as hundreds of Somalis. The best-known stories of the battle focus on two downed Sikorsky Uh-60 Black Hawk helicopters, which were desperately defended by American forces until they could be rescued by an armored convoy.

In 2001, director Ridley Scott released Black Hawk Down, a gritty war film depicting the events of the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia. Featuring a star-studded cast, the unflinching portrait of the realities of war went on to earn critical acclaim and two Academy Awards. In his adaptation of Mark Bowden’s 1999 book Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War, Scott took the testimonials of a vast number of US troops who lived through the battle and compressed them into a storyline suited for the length of a cinematic release.
Now, the new docuseries Surviving Black Hawk Down turns the camera on the actual soldiers — and the Somali people — who survived the Battle of Mogadishu, allowing them to tell audiences exactly what happened in their own words. Ridley Scott is one of the most accomplished filmmakers of all time. Even though he didn't direct his first feature film until he was 40 years old, which is older than most filmmakers, he has directed an impressive 29 films. His debut feature, The Duelists, was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, which set the stage for his incredibly successful career. Some of Ridley Scott's best movies include Blade Runner, Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven, Gladiator, and its recently released sequel, Gladiator II.
These films prove that Scott is one of the most talented directors of his generation. Most of his movies are incredibly ambitious, large-scale genre films. He has made several historical epics but has also continuously shown interest in the science fiction genre. Scott's first two sci-fi films are actually commonly recognized as two of the best science-fiction movies of all time. His second film...

Escape from New York is one of my favorite movies, so I'm glad the remake appears to have finally died in development. The original 1981 John Carpenter movie has one of the all-time great movie hooks; the most dangerous convict in the world, Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), is forced to rescue the kidnapped President from New York, which has been walled off and turned into a hellish prison. Escape from New York is one of Carpenter's best, filled with great sequences and dialogue.
I've always felt that one minor flaw is that the film's modest budget meant it couldn't fully use its setting. Escape From New York's action is relatively small-scale, and it doesn't take audiences to some of the city's most iconic locations, like Central Park or the subway. In theory, a big-budget reboot could really flesh out the concept and make it much larger, but the Escape from New York...

Ridley Scott explains during a recent directors' roundtable why it's better to start a project with a script that isn't quite perfect. Now 87 years old, Scott is one of the most prolific and respected filmmakers in Hollywood, rising to fame with movies like Alien (1978) and Blade Runner (1980). In the years since, Scott has directed a number of notable titles, including Thelma & Louis (1991), Gladiator (2000), and Black Hawk Down (2001).
The more recent decades of Scott's career have been filled with ups and downs, and quite a lot that lives in the middle. In the mid-2000s, Scott released movies like Kingdom of Heaven (2005), American Gangster (2007), Body of Lies (2008), and Robin Hood (2010), none of which now stand among his best. Though movies like Prometheus (2012) and The Martian (2015) were successful, Alien: Covenant (2017) was widely perceived as a let-down, and this was followed by The Last Duel (2021) and House of Gucci (2021), and Napoleon (2023), all of which had mixed receptions.

Ridley Scott claims that his debut 1977 movie would have won one of the biggest film prizes had it not been for $50K bribery. The English director is perhaps best known for his iconic sci-fi films, Alien and Blade Runner, which were only the second and third films of his career. A few years earlier, he made his feature directorial debut in 1977 with a lesser-known historical drama, his first in the genre before directing many more in Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, The Last Duel, and Napoleon.
Scott's later historical epic Gladiator did win arguably the biggest prize in film, the Academy Award for Best Picture, in 2001, while his 2016 sci-fi film The Martian was also nominated for the honor. Additionally, Scott has received an Oscar nomination for Best Director three times for Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, and Black Hawk Down. Ridley Scott sold the set of his 2005 movie for $10, only to pay $1 million to rent the set again fifteen years later. Scott has a dynamic directing career that began with the 1977 film The Duellists. His next movie, Alien, proved to be a breakout hit that launched a long-running franchise and remains one of Ridley Scott's best movies. Scott's next science-fiction film, Blade Runner, was critically divisive when it was released in 1982 and underperformed at the box office, but it is now considered to be a highly influential staple of the science-fiction genre.
Scott has made a lasting impact on other genres as well. His 1991 crime drama, Thelma and Louise, is still widely lauded as a powerful feminist film. A decade later, Scott's Black Hawk Down showcased the true horrors of war based on real events from the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993. Delta Force is a free-to-play tactical shooter that aims to carve out a crowded niche while bringing back an established brand. This new version, which has roots in the late 1990s, is both nostalgic and new, combining old-school military gameplay with newer game mechanics. Offering players a blend of chaotic battlefield experiences and strategic PvE battles, the game’s design represents an understanding of modern shooter dynamics while paying homage to its predecessors.

A Ridley Scott military action movie receives a high accuracy score from a weapons expert. Alien was his breakout hit and is often considered to be one of Ridley Scott's best movies. He followed up Alien with Blade Runner, another movie that would become a science-fiction classic. Scott made his mark on other genres in the ensuing years with a variety of hits, including the crime drama Thelma & Louise and the historical epic Gladiator.

Long before the time of Henry Cavill, Glen Powell, Tom Holland, or Jack Elordi — Josh Hartnett used to be the hot crush of every other teenage girl and woman. The Hollywood actor was not only one of the most famous actors back in the late 90s and early 2000s but he was also ‘the Hollywood icon’ of that time. But unlike actors who would take the fan appeal as a stepping stone to climb higher in their careers, Hartnett made the conscious decision of stepping away from fame.

Ty Burrell has forever cemented his status as America's favorite dad. Through an iconic run as Phil Dunphy on Modern Family, Burrell's quirky humor, heartfelt moments, and perfect comedic timing have made him a household sitcom name. However, beyond television, Burrell has also built an impressive filmography. For instance, he's surprisingly a member of the iconic Black Hawk Down cast, in which he delivers an unsuspectedly grounded performance. Amid the film's gripping intensity, Burrell proved himself to be a true, versatile actor.

Ben Smallbone’s “Homestead” takes place in a world where foreigners detonate a nuclear bomb off the coast of Los Angeles, the protagonists are saved because they own a Tesla, Bitcoin is the only valuable currency, and the truth can only be told on Right Wing radio. For some people that’s a selling point. For many others, it’s a list of red flags.
It’s easy to think of films like “Homestead” as if they live on the fringe of mainstream media, but though this particular film isn’t a major studio release, they’re hardly uncommon. Hit movies like “Black Hawk Down” and “300” have shamelessly vilified non-white antagonists, portraying them as fodder for heroic, mostly white hunks to mow down with impunity, sometimes in dramatic slow-motion. “Forrest Gump” is the story of a man who does everything he’s told to do, like joining the Army...

One year after creating a fictionalized civil war inside the United States, “Civil War” filmmaker Alex Garland has his eyes on a historical conflict. Garland and co-writer and co-director Ray Mendoza, an Iraq War veteran, are behind the new film “Warfare,” a real-time war film based on “the memory of the people who lived it.”

Ewan McGregor's spy thriller accurately depicts the Russian mafia in one clip that an expert calls the "most dangerous and the scariest." The Scottish actor is widely known for his portrayal of the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy – including The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith – which grossed nearly $2 billion combined at the box office from 1999 to 2005. In 2022, Ewan McGregor reprised the role in the Disney+ miniseries, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Outside Star Wars, McGregor has showcased his versatility in films from a wide range of genres, starting with his breakout role as a drug addict in Trainspotting. He went on to star in the musical Moulin Rouge!, the war movie Black Hawk Down, the fantasy drama Big Fish, the thriller Angels and Demons, the LGBTQ-romantic comedy I Love You Phillip Morris, the supernatural horror Doctor Sleep, and the DC movie Birds of Prey.

Imagine expansive maps, two teams of a few dozen players, and a fleet of land and air vehicles colliding at breakneck speeds during the heyday of multiplayer shooters — common isn’t it? Every other title in this highly crowded genre appeared to be nearly identical. However, this is where Delta Force enters the picture.

This game, which was developed by Team Jade, a Tencent subsidiary, seems to be very different from the first generation of PC shooters from the 1990s and early 2000s. The inspiration for the new Delta Force is fairly obvious, as it looks a lot like a Battlefield clone. But in some ways, it’s far superior to Battlefield 2042.

Ridley Scott is one of the most respected and powerful filmmakers working in Hollywood, and has been for decades. Meanwhile, Henry Cavill, the star of "Man of Steel" and "The Witcher," is currently one of the biggest actors in the business. One would imagine a team up between these two would result in something major. Well, that collaboration did happen back in 2006 and all it resulted in, sad to say, is a big flop that effectively killed the production company that backed it.
The movie in question is "Tristan & Isolde," a historical epic that was once a passion project for Scott. The director loves historical epics to this day, having recently directed the blockbuster "Gladiator II," a sequel to his 2000 Best Picture-winner. Good things can happen when Scott is in the director's chair. Unfortunately, Scott was merely a producer on this film.

FX's The Bear offers a gritty look into the human condition through the eyes of the masterminds behind the most ambitious restaurant in Chicago, and throw show is filled with pop culture references, many of which come from Cousin Richie. The Emmy-winning series takes a deep look at each of its characters, developing everyone's backstories, personal interests, and idiosyncrasies as it progresses. A fan and critic's favorite is certainly The Bear's Richie "Cousin" Jeremovich (Ebon Moss-Bacharach), whose often abrasive personality masks a deep emotional core with unique pop culture interests.

War movies have been a staple of Hollywood cinema almost since movies were invented. The war movie genre covers everything from historical conflicts and those in the present day, to even sci-fi imaginings of wars to come. Though the genre is perhaps most often associated with historical conflicts like World War II, World War I, and the Vietnam War, war movies that depict more recent conflicts, such as those in the Middle East, have also broken through as seminal entries.
Some notable recent war movies include Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down (2001), which chronicles a real-life incident during the Battle of Mogadishu, and Sam Mendes' Jarhead (2005), which follows a Marine's journey during the Persian Gulf War. Green Zone (2010), American Sniper (2014), Lone Survivor (2013), The Outpost (2019), and Zero Dark Thirty (2012) all take very different looks at similarly recent conflicts. One 2012 film, however, has largely fallen by the wayside when it comes to war movie genre history.

Denzel Washington is determined to get Ridley Scott his long “overdue” Oscar.
Washington, who reunites with Scott for “Gladiator II” almost 20 years after 2007’s “American Gangster,” told The Hollywood Reporter that Scott not having won Best Director is almost criminal.
“Ridley is overdue,” Washington said. “How can he not have won an Oscar? That doesn’t even make sense. I don’t believe it, actually.”
Scott’s original 2000 “Gladiator” won Best Picture, with star Russell Crowe winning Best Actor. Scott was up for Best Director, having been nominated in the category previously with “Thelma & Louise” and again with “Black Hawk Down.” Scott has won BAFTA Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and Primetime Emmy Awards, just not an Academy Award yet.
And Washington is ready to make 2025 Scott’s year.
Washington said to “BBC Radio 1” that Scott not having an Oscar is proof that the Academy can’t do their “job” recognizing talent.

Few masters can span six decades in the spotlight. Yet Ridley Scott has never been a normal filmmaker. A wunderkind and prodigy, Scott broke into the mainstream in the mid-1970s, coming out of the gate with some of the best films in history. Even his “failures” have been reworked, allowing Scott to rewrite his own history in the process. There may not be a better “Director’s cut” filmography around, and Scott’s legend only continues to grow with time. His return to the Colosseum in Gladiator II has rightfully caused a moment of retrospection for the icon. Below are ten of his best features, which becomes a difficult exercise with a filmography as deep as Scott’s.

An enterprising surveyor of genre and tone, Ridley Scott has earned the admiration of audiences and critics alike with a seemingly unending interest in exploring the outermost limits of his art form. The British director broke onto the scene in 1977 with “The Duellists,” a French period drama starring Harvey Keitel and Keith Carradine set during the Napoleonic Wars. He returns to the early 19th century with Joaquin Phoenix as its namesake historical figure with the epic “Napoleon,” in theaters November 22.
“I first became aware of Ridley Scott with his film ‘The Duellists,'” Francis Ford Coppola recently said of Scott’s debut in an Instagram post. “I was impressed, and realizing he was my contemporary began following his work, which was prodigious to say the least. “Gladiator II” (Paramount) is expected to gross over $60 million when it open this week in the U.S./Canada. If so, that will be a strong start for Ridley Scott’s 29th feature in his 45-year career.
With a budget reported to be somewhere around $250 million-$300 million, it will need all of that and more. While this may be his fourth film to cost over over $200 million (adjusting to current dollar value), “Gladiator II” appears to be the highest spend of Scott’s career.
It’s also the record expense for a director over 80. Paramount’s decision to entrust Scott clearly speaks to his past performances, particularly internationally.
We surveyed all 28 previous Scott features, calculating their grosses and budgets at 2024 values. And while a $60 million “Gladiator II” opening would be a record on paper, that only works if you don’t adjust his track record to current dollars and ticket prices.

Director Ridley Scott has opened up about why one of his next movies is in a genre he's never done before, explaining what influenced his decision to tackle something new. The longtime director's original claim to fame was his sci-fi movies, having created both the Alien and Blade Runner franchises. While he would continue to expand the Alien movie timeline with prequels like 2012's Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, he never got the chance to do the same with the Harrison Ford-led film. Instead, he began branching out into different genres across his career.
Despite creating two classic sci-fi franchises, Scott's historical epics have become his claim to fame. These include Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, and Napoleon, with the upcoming Gladiator II also falling into this category. Other realistic films he's done include Black Hawk Down, Body of Lies, and The Counselor, emphasizing just how much the director can embrace a multitude of film genres.

A video game adaptation was seemingly the perfect Venom replacement for Tom Hardy, but the project was canceled before it could see the light of day. Born on 15 September 1977, Tom Hardy made his acting debut with Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down and gradually grew from strength to strength after landing supporting roles in movies like Star Trek: Nemesis and RocknRolla. The actor's breakthrough came in 2008 when he played Charles Bronson in 2008's Bronson, paving the way for him to land more mainstream roles in movies like Inception, Lawless, and This Means War.
Since then, Tom Hardy has been a part of many acclaimed movies and even a few shows, making him one of the most accomplished actors of modern times. After working alongside Ridley Scott for Gladiator II, Denzel Washington is ready to stand up for the director. Gladiator II director Ridley Scott has expressed interest in releasing a four-hour version of his Gerard Depardieu-led historical epic that earned $59 million at the box office. Scott has released 11 extended cuts throughout his career, some of which have become considered the definitive versions of his movies. This includes the Final Cut of Blade Runner, which remastered the film, cut out unnecessary voiceover, and changed the ending to what the director initially envisioned. His director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven is also highly-praised, despite negative reviews for the original theatrical release.
Some of his other director's cuts have also not been extended editions, such as a cut of Alien that, while a minute shorter, provides new context about his vision for its universe. Other alternate versions haven't made as big an impact, however, such as an extra eight minutes added to Black Hawk Down or his Napoleon director's cut, which,...

A ship-to-shore invasion with fleets of Roman battleships fighting with trebuchets and thousands of archers. A naval duel to the death inside a flooded, shark-infested coliseum. A fight against a rampaging rhino, and hand-to-hand combat with a pissed-off hairless, snarling, possibly rabid baboon. Nobody does these things as well, or efficiently, as Ridley Scott, and with Gladiator II he’s topped the action of the Oscar-winning 2000 original, in a reflection of a more cruel, decadent and crumbling Rome, plagued by years of upheaval since the death of Russell Crowe’s rebel leader Maximus.

Sir Ridley Scott has enjoyed over five decades as a filmmaker and is as active as ever in his eighties. His 2024 sequel “Gladiator II” is as masterful and wide in epic scope as anything in his career.
Not only have his films been visually thrilling they have also provided excellent acting opportunities for actors and many members of his casts have been Oscar-nominated. Russell Crowe in fact won the Oscar for Best Actor for “Gladiator.” Even thought it also won for Best Picture, Scott himself though has never won an Oscar.

The 2022 action drama sequel Top Gun: Maverick is one of the highest-grossing and most universally-acclaimed action movies of all time, and it could have looked very different if the original plan for the movie's direction had actually come to pass. After many years in development, the director's chair for Maverick was eventually filled by Joseph Kosinski, who previously was most widely recognized for his work with CGI-heavy movies like Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, and Only the Brave. Kosinski obviously did an incredible job blending CGI and real-world stunt direction, resulting in the outstanding action sequences of Maverick.
While Kosinski was chosen to direct in 2017, five years before the film's release, a Top Gun sequel was in development as far back as 2010. While Kosinski was chosen to direct in 2017, five years before the film's release, a Top Gun sequel was in development as far back as 2010. Prior to Kosinski's selection, however, the movie was originally offered to producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott, the duo responsible for the oft-quoted Top Gun. Scott unfortunately died in 2012, which forced Bruckheimer and co.

Exclusive: Every interview Ridley Scott has done with Deadline has turned into a master class on his cinematic exercises in world creation, ranging from Alien, to Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Blackhawk Down, Napoleon, Prometheus, The Martian and Gladiator to name just a few. He’s back 25 years after Gladiator won five Oscars including Best Picture, but not Best Director. Scott has never won that elusive prize, but maybe his time has come with Gladiator II. It picks up the storyline with the son of Maximus, as hellbent on revenge as was his father in the original film. There is connective tissue to the original which salvaged the sword-and-sandal saga from the scrap heap, and intrigue and emotional backstories brought to life by a strong cast of Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger and Derek Jacobi. There are also several action set pieces in...

Denzel Washington is a rare breed – a bankable star who has rarely relied on massive franchises or outlandish roles to get some box-office success. It can be argued that he has actually built his career on the art of picking. And yet, while Washington is one of the most respected actors of his generation, his highest-grossing film, American Gangster, brought in a “modest” $266.5 million worldwide back in 2007.

Now, with Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 around the corner, Washington could very well break this 16-year streak, finally overtaking American Gangster as his highest-grossing film. But how did a star of Washington’s caliber avoid this mega-blockbuster idea for so long, and what is it about Gladiator 2 that could make it his biggest box-office hit yet?
It’s a Denzel Washington show through and through

Sir Ridley Scott didn’t make his first feature film (1977’s The Duellists) until he was 40 years old. The director, turning 87 at the end of this month, has not wasted any time making up for that late start with a remarkable array of landmark films including Blade Runner, Alien, Thelma and Louise, The Martian, Black Hawk Down and on and on.
Coming off the massive Napoleon, he jumped right into another epic project with a sequel 24 years after 2000’s Gladiator became his only Best Picture Oscar winner (though he lost Best Director to the double-nominated Steven Soderbergh that year). Scott generally has resisted going the sequel route to his films, with his 2012 Prometheus and 2017 Alien: Covenant proving the exceptions, though those two films completing his so-called Alien trilogy came respectively 33 years and 38 years after his much-imitated 1979 hit, Alien. In between he left it to others including James Cameron to take...
