Ben Whishaw again proves himself as the brilliant actor we all knew he was, if we were looking closely enough, in Ira Sachs’ “Peter Hujar’s Day.” The film, set in 1974 New York City, is an intimate two-hander starring just Whishaw and Rebecca Hall as gay photographer Peter Hujar and writer Linda Rosenkrantz, respectively. They gathered, it’s true, on a cold day in December, where Hujar recounts all the events of the previous one, which involved photo opportunities with Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs, and a lot of quotidian nothingness. But those small moments of a day grow profound as Peter’s winding monologue wears on. Writer/director Sachs’ extraordinary new movie never breaks from the pair, and at times becomes like a documentary about the greatness of the actors themselves, Mozart possessing the soundtrack as Sachs and cinematographer Alex Ashe take longing, lingering B-roll of the performers.

Exclusive: Comedy Dynamics has inked a deal with Eddie Izzard to license her entire comedy catalog and release her new stand-up special, Wunderbar.

The comic’s new special will be released through the company’s hybrid distribution system composed of Comcast, Amazon Prime Video, Peacock, Spectrum, Apple TV, Dish, Google Play, DirecTV, Vimeo, YouTube and many more. It’s expected to hit the platforms in late 2021.

“I’m very happy to have my comedic body of work and our Emmy-nominated documentary Believe to be available with Comedy Dynamics for all of North America to enjoy,” Izzard said.

Kevin Parker, aka Tame Impala, has announced that his highly anticipated album The Slow Rush will be released on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. Constantin Television and Amazon Studios have revealed the lead cast – and have released the first photo of them on location – for their coproduction “We Children From Bahnhof Zoo.” The high-end series, inspired by the 1978 non-fiction book about teenage drug users in Berlin that was previously adapted as the shocking 1981 film “Christiane F.,” is being distributed internationally by Fremantle.

The series presents “a picture of the drugs and club scene in Berlin” that is “provocative” and “controversial,” according to a statement from the producers.

The Bahnhof Zoo clique at the heart of the show will be played by Jana McKinnon (Christiane), Michelangelo Fortuzzi (Benno), Lena Urzendowsky (Stella), Bruno Alexander (Michi), Jeremias Meyer (Axel) and Lea Drinda (Babsi).

Picture Tree Intl. has acquired the rights to Carolina Hellsgård’s “Sunburned,” the follow-up feature to her zombie drama “Endzeit – Ever After.”

Pti will be presenting first footage from the film, currently in post-production, at this year’s German Films Previews (July 3-6).

“Sunburned” follows solitary teenager Claire on a family holiday in Spain. Neglected by her distant mother and older sister she eventually finds company in Amram, a young, struggling Senegalese beach vendor. Claire promises to help him, regardless of the consequences.

Johnnie Planco, a former Wma agent and co-founder of the Parseghian Planco management and production company, died on Sunday from a brain and respiratory infection. He was 68.

Planco started out in the Wma mailroom in 1972 and rose in the ranks at the talent agency before he left in 2000. He was the youngest department head and senior vice president in the company’s history, and ran both the motion picture department in New York and the William Morris talent department, which he created. Some of the clients he represented included Tom Hanks, Richard Gere, John Malkovich, Michael Douglas and Susan Sarandon.

After leaving, he and Gene Parseghian formed Parseghian Planco and represented Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Schrader, Judi Dench, F. Murray Abraham and many others. Johnnie Planco, a former New York-based William Morris Agency (Wma) agent and co-founder of management/production company Parseghian Planco, has died. He was 68.

Planco passed away on Sunday in New York City after suffering from an infection that his brain and respiratory system.

Planco joined the Wma mailroom after he graduated from Fordham University at Lincoln Center in 1972, and he stayed at the agency until 2000. During his tenure at Wma, he became the youngest department head and senior vice president, running both the motion picture department in New York and creating the William Morris Talent Department. In his career, he represented talent like Tom Hanks, Richard Gere, Michael Douglas, Susan Sarandon, Lauren Bacall and John Malkovich, among many others.

Global Screen has picked up international distribution rights to spy thriller “1989 – A Spy Story,” as the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall approaches. Inspired by true events, it tells the story of a female Stasi agent, placed in the U.S. embassy in the 1980s. When the Berlin Wall comes down, she expects to be uncovered any moment, but in a cat-and-mouse-game, she tries to escape detection.

Alexandra Heidrich, head of TV sales and acquisitions at Global Screen, said the show is “fast-paced, highly atmospheric and features a top-notch cast.” She added: “Knowing that several real-life Stasi spies live unexposed among us, makes the plot all the more relevant and intriguing.”

Aiming to ramp up its premium international content, Amazon Prime Video has greenlit the production of 17 new original series from Britain, Germany, Italy, Spain, India, Japan and Mexico.

These include “The Power,” a British contemporary thriller based on Naomi Alderman’s bestselling science-fiction novel; “El Presidente,” a Mexican crime series inspired by the 2015 corruption scandal that engulfed world soccer body FIFA ; “We Children of Bahnhof Zoo,” a German series based on the 1978 controversial autobiographical book by the same name; “The Last Hour,” an Indian supernatural crime thriller set in the Himalayas; and an untitled social issue series produced by Vice Media Japan, which will mark the first collaboration between Vice and Amazon Prime Video.

“We know that customers watching Prime Video everywhere want to see authentic stories, set in their own countries, and to invest in characters that can reflect their own experiences and diversity,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios.

Just in time for Christmas comes the heartwarming story of “Perfume,” which follows a half-dozen friends so obsessed with the possibilities of smell that the death of one of them dredges up some extremely unpleasant things about their pasts.

The new series is based on the 1985 Patrick Süskind novel “Perfume,” which was previously adapted into the 2006 Tom Tykwer film “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer,” starring a pre-Bond Ben Whishaw, Alan Rickman, and Dustin Hoffman. This new TV venture brings the original story into a modern context, rather than the 18th-century French environs of the novel.

In updating the historical story, this six-part season also gets a detective show twist, with a group of investigators looking into the death of a singer. What they find is a group of one-time school friends, at least one of whom stumbled into the practice of using human scents as the basis for making a one-of-a-kind fragrance.

Patrick Süskind's novel "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" has already yielded one excellent adaptation in Tom Tykwer's outstanding movie of the same name but the concept of Süskind's book is being revamped for a new project simply titled "Perfume."

Writer Eva Kranenburg has updated the story to take place in the present and follows a young profiler tracking what appears to be a serial killer responsible for a series of brutal murders. The investigation leads her to a mysterious group formed at a boarding school whose members tried to manipulate people by using human scents.

Freya’s daughter, Marie, disappeared 11 years ago without a trace, but Freya is determined to uncover the truth, whatever the cost. Sitting down to savor Whitney Cummings’s recently new stand-up DVD Money Shot, I settled in with high expectations. As far as her skills as a comedienne go, it’s harder to find a funnier, sharper one. She takes elements of other great stand-up acts right now, changes them to fit her own punchlines and turns out something wholly satisfying and, at times, gut-bustingly funny. Imagine if Sarah Silverman relied less on shock tactics in her stand-up and just honed in on poignant barbs, then combine that with the generally over-sarcastic nature and ranting of Denis Leary, and finally add in a dash of Jerry Seinfeld or George Carlin observation. Michael Rymer’s independent feature Face to Face has won the Best Film award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

“I am absolutely thrilled that the film has won this award at its first ever screening, and am delighted that this low budget minnow has been lauded by critics and film goers alike,” said Rymer.

The micro-budget film was financed independently and shot over 12 days in Melbourne, and stars Vince Colosimo, Sigrid Thornton, Luke Ford and troubled actor Matthew Newton. The actors are also shareholders in the film.

Face to Face is based on transcripts from actual conflict resolution sessions. In the film, Wayne, a young scaffold construction worker, rams into the back of his boss’ car in a fit of anger at being sacked. It's not terribly original nor is it incredibly insightful but Colin Quinn: Long Story Short offers a fair amount of humorous moments with a relaxed delivery and distinctly American approach. Scratching at history's surface, actor/comedian Colin Quinn works to combine comedy with historical commentary and is halfway successful. It feels like an American version of Eddie Izzard's Dress to Kill, simplified for an audience not as savvy in historical trivia and more inclined to respond to images on an over-sized screen than profundity. Instead of witty allusions to semi-obscure figures and occurrences, Quinn sticks to the basics with a lot of accents and character voices thrown in for good measure.

The most 'Hollywood' Venice premiere was probably The Town which brought out the happy familiar faces of Ben Affleck, Rebecca Hall, Jon Hamm and last year's Best Actor nominee Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker).

British actress Lucy Gordon seemed to have it all. A role in Spider-Man 3 launched her into the big time, she had just wrapped a new movie, and she was living with a man she adored. With so many positive reasons to live, her friends and family were stunned when she was found hanged in an apparent suicide in her Paris apartment on May 20 - two days before what would have been her 29th birthday. Her boyfriend was apparently asleep while the suicide took place. Other reports say that she had been arguing with her boyfriend Jerome Alveras the same night she was found dead. They have now ordered an autopsy to confirm the cause of death,but it is pretty certain that she committed suicide since she left two suicide notes.
