Ben Whishaw again proves himself as the brilliant actor we all knew he was, if we were looking closely enough, in Ira Sachs’ “Peter Hujar’s Day.” The film, set in 1974 New York City, is an intimate two-hander starring just Whishaw and Rebecca Hall as gay photographer Peter Hujar and writer Linda Rosenkrantz, respectively. They gathered, it’s true, on a cold day in December, where Hujar recounts all the events of the previous one, which involved photo opportunities with Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs, and a lot of quotidian nothingness. But those small moments of a day grow profound as Peter’s winding monologue wears on. Writer/director Sachs’ extraordinary new movie never breaks from the pair, and at times becomes like a documentary about the greatness of the actors themselves, Mozart possessing the soundtrack as Sachs and cinematographer Alex Ashe take longing, lingering B-roll of the performers.

Just in time for Christmas comes the heartwarming story of “Perfume,” which follows a half-dozen friends so obsessed with the possibilities of smell that the death of one of them dredges up some extremely unpleasant things about their pasts.
The new series is based on the 1985 Patrick Süskind novel “Perfume,” which was previously adapted into the 2006 Tom Tykwer film “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer,” starring a pre-Bond Ben Whishaw, Alan Rickman, and Dustin Hoffman. This new TV venture brings the original story into a modern context, rather than the 18th-century French environs of the novel.
In updating the historical story, this six-part season also gets a detective show twist, with a group of investigators looking into the death of a singer. What they find is a group of one-time school friends, at least one of whom stumbled into the practice of using human scents as the basis for making a one-of-a-kind fragrance.

Screening at Canneseries as part of the Official Competition selection, “The Typist” follows Freya Becker, a typist with the homicide division of the Berlin police. ABC has ordered a pilot for erotic thriller Dress To Kill. The drama is described as a "soap" set in the New York fashion world, with a murder mystery at the show's centre, Deadline reports. The project has been devised by writer Jessica Sharzer, who previously worked on FX's American Horror Story as a writer and supervising producer. She also served as co-producer on Kristen Stewart's 2004 movie Speak, based on the novel of the same name by Laurie Halse (more)...

Exclusive: Finding a series set in the fashion world remains a priority for ABC. After last year’s pilot Americana, the network has given a put pilot commitment to Dress To Kill, a drama from writer Jessica Sharzer (American Horror Story). It is described as an erotic thriller/soap set in the New York fashion world with whodunit mystery at the heart of it. Dress To Kill hails from 20th Century Fox TV and studio-based Imagine Television. It represents a rare major commitment for a pitch with no big-name talent or showrunner attached so late in the buying season when the networks’ coffers are almost depleted. Sharzer is executive producing Dress To Kill with Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo. This is one of several projects Imagine TV has set up this season, including a brother comedy at Fox and medical drama at CBS. On the feature side, Sharzer...

Known for his unique, hyper-erudite, stream-of-consciousness stand-up comedy (best showcased in the 2000 concert film "Dress to Kill"), Eddie Izzard has also spent the better part of the last two decades building a very interesting career as a character actor on both stage and screen. With the exception of his leading role on the acclaimed (though short-lived) FX series "The Riches," Izzard's main strength as an actor has been in the kind of indelible supporting roles that he plays in IFC's upcoming miniseries "Bullet In The Face." "Bullet in the Face," which is being spread out over two nights on August 16th and 17th at 10pm, shares with creator Alan Spencer's previous cult classic "Sledge Hammer!" a cracked, satirical bent. It's also met with some minor controversy for its violent content -- the show's set in a comic-book-style alternate universe full of warring gangsters, tough cops, jet-black humor and...

This follow-up to the previous soundtrack mix, Hyper Sleep, is very much the same animal: a chance gathering of mesmerizing music tracks, carefully arranged to focus on the interstitial character of film music—its ability to distill into hallucinatory moments, the most sensual or emotional qualities of a film’s nature, and amplify these sensations to increase their temporal impact. With this idea of music as intoxicant in mind, the passing this year of John Barry was a loss of one of the great “perfumers” of film composing (for more on music as perfume, see Daniel Kasman’s “Herrmann’s Perfume”). The beautiful themes that Barry scored for the world of 007 that open this collection set the spell for a kaleidoscopic (largely) 60s and 70s sample of some of the best film music written by Ennio Morricone,...

Sitting down to savor Whitney Cummings’s recently new stand-up DVD Money Shot, I settled in with high expectations. As far as her skills as a comedienne go, it’s harder to find a funnier, sharper one. She takes elements of other great stand-up acts right now, changes them to fit her own punchlines and turns out something wholly satisfying and, at times, gut-bustingly funny. Imagine if Sarah Silverman relied less on shock tactics in her stand-up and just honed in on poignant barbs, then combine that with the generally over-sarcastic nature and ranting of Denis Leary, and finally add in a dash of Jerry Seinfeld or George Carlin observation. That’s essentially Whitney Cummings’s stand-up, and it’s hilarious. She works the angle well, and she's easily one of the funniest comedians working today.

Michael Rymer’s independent feature Face to Face has won the Best Film award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
“I am absolutely thrilled that the film has won this award at its first ever screening, and am delighted that this low budget minnow has been lauded by critics and film goers alike,” said Rymer.
The micro-budget film was financed independently and shot over 12 days in Melbourne, and stars Vince Colosimo, Sigrid Thornton, Luke Ford and troubled actor Matthew Newton. The actors are also shareholders in the film.
Face to Face is based on transcripts from actual conflict resolution sessions. In the film, Wayne, a young scaffold construction worker, rams into the back of his boss’ car in a fit of anger at being sacked. Rather than going straight to court, he opts for a community conference to discuss the events that led to such a violent reaction.

Colin Quinn: Long Story Short
Helen Hayes Theatre, NYC
Through February 5, 2011
It's not terribly original nor is it incredibly insightful but Colin Quinn: Long Story Short offers a fair amount of humorous moments with a relaxed delivery and distinctly American approach. Scratching at history's surface, actor/comedian Colin Quinn works to combine comedy with historical commentary and is halfway successful. It feels like an American version of Eddie Izzard's Dress to Kill, simplified for an audience not as savvy in historical trivia and more inclined to respond to images on an over-sized screen than profundity. Instead of witty allusions to semi-obscure figures and occurrences, Quinn sticks to the basics with a lot of accents and character voices thrown in for good measure.

Subject: Jeffrey Lynn Goldblum, 58-year old American actor
Positive Buzzwords: Enigmatic, languid, dry humor, longevity, self-depreciation
Negative Buzzwords: Quirky, greasy, horndog
Date of Assessment: November 12, 2010
The Case: Ah yes, the time has finally come to discuss a subject of Bedhead fantasies, but before anyone gets your hopes up that I'll make erotic declarations concerning the languid presence of one Jeff Goldblum, it's not quite like that. You see, my enduring dream about Goldblum is to open a bottle of shampoo (the brand matters not) and pour the contents over head, but it doesn't have to be that way. Even if I don't see the physical appeal of the bloke, many female hearts swoon at his mere presence, and there's even a Tumblr devoted to rating the "Goldblum Presence" in various movies. Despite such a devoted fanbase and an affable oddball presence, the truly odd thing about Jeff Goldblum is that...

Toronto kicked off last night but before we get to our coverage there -- we'll be hearing from the same folks who covered Toronto for The Film Experience last year -- Venice is starting to wrap up. Awards will be announced before you know it.
The most 'Hollywood' Venice premiere was probably The Town which brought out the happy familiar faces of Ben Affleck, Rebecca Hall, Jon Hamm and last year's Best Actor nominee Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker).
Is it just me or is it always a bit odd to see Jon Hamm smiling? He's smiling so much lately and with that career you'd be smiling too. But it's so UnDraper! These townies had prophetic reason to be happy. Reviews were kind. Here's a sampling:
Cinema Blend "bigger by nearly every measure" [than Gone Baby Gone]

Very little in life came easily for the British comedian and actor Eddie Izzard. When he was six, his mother died of cancer, and shortly thereafter he was sent away to boarding school. He suffered from dyslexia and had an incurable penchant for cross-dressing. After spending years struggling to make ends meet as a street performer, he began to get noticed in London’s comedy clubs and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Izzard’s breakthrough in the U.S. came in the late 1990s with his Dress to Kill comedy tour (broadcast on HBO in 1999). More recently, he delivered a tour de force performance as Charlie Chaplin in Peter Bogdanovich’s Old-Hollywood mystery The Cat’s Meow, was part of the ensemble cast of Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen, and starred in the FX Network original series The Riches. A documentary about his life, Believe: The Eddie Izzard Story,...

It's almost time for an update of the Top 50 Hottest Young Actors list! Before our rundown featuring the actors below, let's have a look at some hitlists from across the web - Moviefone has a 25 under 25 and Fandango a 10 Young Actors to Watch list. ScreenDaily publishes Stars of Tomorrow and there is the annual European Shooting Stars celebrated as part of the Berlinale. The first 2 only consider Hollywood movies and cast, while ScreenDaily is exclusively for UK-based filmmakers and actors. The 'shooting star' programme is, of course, for Europeans.

British actress Lucy Gordon seemed to have it all. A role in Spider-Man 3 launched her into the big time, she had just wrapped a new movie, and she was living with a man she adored. With so many positive reasons to live, her friends and family were stunned when she was found hanged in an apparent suicide in her Paris apartment on May 20 - two days before what would have been her 29th birthday. "Nobody can understand why she did this horrible thing," the teenage daughter of her companion Jerome Almeras told the U.K.'s Mail on Sunday.

British Actress Lucy Gordon who played reporter Jennifer Dugan in "Spider-Man" 3, has reportedly been found dead in her Paris apartment by French police after allegedly hanging herself. Her boyfriend was apparently asleep while the suicide took place. Other reports say that she had been arguing with her boyfriend Jerome Alveras the same night she was found dead. They have now ordered an autopsy to confirm the cause of death, but it is pretty certain that she committed suicide since she left two suicide notes. One to her parents, and another stating how she wants her estate to be disposed of. Lucy Gordon had worked as model before making her movie debut in the 2001 movie, "Perfume".

French police are continuing to investigate the death of actress Lucy Gordon, even as foul play has been ruled out. Gordon was found Wednesday by an unidentified male friend after apparently committing suicide, People magazine reports. An up-and-coming actress, Gordon is probably best known to genre fans as Jennifer Dugan in "Spider-Man 3." However, she has appeared in a number of other films including "Perfume" in 2001, and "The Four Feathers" with the late Heath Ledger. She also is starring in the upcoming film "Serge Gainsbourg." Friday would've been her 29th birthday. "She was a sparking, warm-hearted, touching and generous, and we will miss her sorely," said Elizabeth Simpson, Gordon's French agent. "We have always been immensely proud of her and her achievements," her father ...

Lucy Gordon, a young British actress perhaps best known for a small role in Spider-Man 3, was found dead in her Paris apartment yesterday, May 20. Gordon’s death was an apparent suicide. She is supposed to have hanged herself while her boyfriend, cinematographer Jérôme Alméras, slept. Gordon would have turned 29 tomorrow, May 22. The Oxford-born Gordon worked as a model before making her feature-film debut in the little-seen Perfume in 2001. Among her other screen credits are the romantic comedy Serendipity, with John Cusack; The Four Feathers, opposite Heath Ledger; Steve Clark’s dramatic comedy Frost, starring Jason Behr; Russian Dolls, with Romain Duris; and John Krasinski’s Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, which was screened at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Additionally, Gordon had recently completed Joann Sfar’s biopic Serge Gainsbourg, vie héroïque / Serge Gainsbourg (a Heroic Life) (top photo), in which she played the role of Serge Gainsbourg...
