The California Film Commission announced the latest round of tax credits for film productions on Monday, and once again Netflix emerged as the big winner.
The streaming giant was awarded $60.3 million in state credits, far outpacing Disney ($27.2 million), Warner Bros. ($16.2 million) and Amazon ($16 million). Netflix also led the way in the last round of credits in August 2021, taking $43.3 million.
This time, Netflix was granted credits for four projects: “Atlas,” “Beverly Hills Cop 4,” “Family Leave” and “Unfrosted.”
The latter project stars Jerry Seinfeld in an origin story about the Pop Tart, and was awarded $14.2 million in credits.
“We are so happy to get the California tax credit which enables us to make our whole movie there,” said Seinfeld, who is also writing, directing and producing the film for Netflix. “Having made all of the ‘Seinfeld’ series in L.A., I very much wanted to come back and shoot there again.

30 different film projects, including Jerry Seinfeld’s “Unfrosted” for Netflix and Tom Brady’s recently announced film “80 For Brady,” are among the movies that have qualified for the latest round of tax credits for filming inside the state of California.
The California Film Commission announced Monday that 19 indie and 11 studio films were selected for the latest round as part of the state’s Film & TV Tax Credit Program 3.0. These projects will bring an estimated $1.17 billion in combined production spending to California, including $774 million in “qualified” spending (defined as wages to below-the-line workers and payments to in-state vendors).
It has reserved $149.2 million in tax credit allocation for the 30 conditionally approved projects. Only the qualified portion of each project’s budget is eligible for tax credits under California’s uniquely targeted incentive program.

The official video for Kansas’ “Dust in the Wind” is typical of many music videos from the late Seventies: There’s an endless amount of hair, a few questionably ruffled tuxedo shirts, and some more hair. In the same way that Journey’s 1978 video for “Lights” humorously featured light literally beaming out of the band members’ extravagant outfits, the Kansas clip uses a fog machine to dramatically represent all that dust in the wind.
But this is a song about living in the moment — so why not check out a...

Having spent most of my life in New England, where sports are the way of life and the Patriots hoard more cultural cachet than the Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins, and maybe even the mayor combined, I have never understood football’s appeal as entertainment or as a pastime. Against these odds, Ty Roberts’ new movie, “12 Mighty Orphans,” has opened my eyes by couching Americans’ passion for the game in a time of national duress: The Dust Bowl, smack-dab in the middle of the Great Depression, when football became a symbol on which deprived and destitute Americans could imprint their hopes and dreams.

Nearly 40 years ago, Godfrey Reggio’s “Koyaanisqatsi” set a pulsating montage of modern and natural splendor to an ecstatic Phillip Glass score and was off to the races, with a singular formula of manufactured awe that has lasted generations. Likewise, when Terrence Malick returned from decades of dormancy to heighten conventional narratives with whispery voiceovers and cosmic detours, the ambition was undeniable. Yet “Awaken,” which was executive produced by both men and directed by their protege Tom Lowe,
“Awaken” was reportedly shot over the course of five years and across 30 countries, yet all that time and globe-trotting effort yielded little more than a dense clip reel of sumptuous time-lapse photography strewn about 70-odd minutes in search of a single unifying idea to justify the journey. Lowe is an undeniably talented astrophotographer who was been churning out time-lapse marvels for over a decade. His 2009 “TimeScapes,” which centers on the American southwest,...

"Our moment." Step aside Godfrey Reggio, it's time for other filmmakers to present their vision of our world in glorious 4K Hdr. Awaken is a documentary feature from filmmaker / cinematographer Tom Löwe, of the timelapse film TimeScapes previously. This is his latest creation - shot over a 5-year period in more than 30 countries, he pioneers state-of-the-art timelapse, time-dilation, underwater, and aerial cinematography techniques to give audiences new eyes with which to see our world. Executive produced by cinema pioneers Terrence Malick and Godfrey Reggio (best known for the stunning Qatsi documentary series), Awaken is a celebration of the spirit of life, an exploration of the Earth, and an ode to the Cosmos. I'm a big geek for this kind of jaw-dropping cinematography, but apparently it's getting harder and harder to sell to audiences. This premiered in 2018 but is only now getting a direct-to-vod release via the Dust sci-fi YouTube channel.

Milcho Manchevski is a New York-based filmmaker from North Macedonia, who has made several films about motherhood and its impact on women. His latest film, “Willow,” takes that theme and tells it through the eyes of a shared experience of sacrifice that spans centuries.
“Willow” is a triptych of three stories, each about 30 minutes in length, which ripple subtly into each other. It’s a format of storytelling that Manchevski has favored during his career, especially in his acclaimed 1994 drama “Before the Rain,” which won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival and earned an Oscar nomination. “Willow” is North Macedonia’s official selection for the 2020 Academy Awards.

This article contains spoilers for episode 3 of The Stand.
After spending much of episodes 1 and 2 with important characters such as Stu Redman (James Marsden), Frannie Goldsmith (Odessa Young), Harold Lauder (Owen Teague) and Larry Underwood (Jovan Adepo), the new miniseries version of Stephen King’s The Stand brings in or fills out the backgrounds of several more key personnel in episode 3, titled “Blank Pages.”
This episode of the nine-part CBS All Access limited series introduces the characters of Nick Andros (Brazilian actor Henry Zaga from The New Mutants), Ray Brentner (Irene Bedard) and Tom Cullen (Brad William Henke), all of whom play a major role in King’s tale — and all of whom have received a fairly significant overhaul for the new adaptation.
In King’s book and the 1994 miniseries, Ray is Ralph Brentner, a physically imposing yet good-natured 45-year-old farmer from Oklahoma and a key leader of the Boulder Free Zone.

The film, which marks Stern’s feature directorial debut, explores “the nature of our existence.” After witnessing the murder of his girlfriend (Gee), Joe (Koaho) risks everything — including reality itself — to discover the truth about her death. Additional casting is underway.
Levels comes from Orbital Mechanics and Middle Child Films and will be produced by Stern and Tony Wosk of Middle Child.
“Adam shows a unique talent for storytelling within the genre, including strong character work with his actors, compelling visuals and the ability to produce visual effects-heavy content on a fraction of the cost of studio tentpole movies,” said Wosk. “Levels is structured...

This His Dark Materials review contains spoilers.
This is such a weird story. Beautifully so. It’s not surprising that the first attempt to put it on screen in 2007 struggled to capture its peculiar magic, nor that it would justify all the blood, sweat and tears involved in a second go. Witches and parallel worlds and quasi-fascist baddies we’ve seen before in fantasy, but quantum computing, dark matter and an ex-nun physicist alongside them? This is a singular tale that – as fans of Pullman’s books know – is only about to get stranger.
An episode like ‘The Cave’ shows just how singular, and how well-conceived the narrative spine of His Dark Materials is. The concept of Dust has, until now, felt contained to Lyra’s fantastic world. Here we see that it’s universal, with a presence in every realm including our own. What Lyra calls Dust, we call...

Gunpowder & Sky’s sci-fi label Dust is developing a modern take on the classic H.G. Wells novel The Island of Dr. Moreau. The series will be titled Moreau and will be written by Zack Stentz.
“The double helix wasn’t even a twinkle in Watson & Crick’s eye when H.G. Wells first wrote The Island of Dr. Moreau, but his 1896 novel proved astonishingly prescient about how unlocking the secrets of DNA would open the door to humanity playing God with the natural world in strange and frightening ways,” said Stentz. “And now, in the shadow of the Crispr revolution, it felt like the perfect time to revisit Moreau and bring it into our own 21st Century world of transgenic animals, designer babies and other scientific advances Wells never could have dreamed of.

Disney’s Searchlight arm has bought rights to Claire Foy’s horror-thriller “Dust,” four months after the project was unveiled at the Cannes Virtual Market.
Foy will portray a woman who becomes increasingly traumatized in 1930s Oklahoma amid the region’s horrific dust storms and convinces herself that a mysterious presence is threatening her family. She then takes extraordinary measures to protect them.
Variety reported at the Cannes market in June that the film would be set around a remote farmhouse and would be fairly self-contained, with just a small number of starring roles and a minimalist aesthetic.
Will Joines and Karrie Crouse are set to direct from a script that Crouse wrote. The screenplay was developed at the Sundance Writer’s Lab.
“Winter’s Bone” producer Alix Madigan and her Mad Dog Films are producing with Lucas Joaquin of Secret Engine. CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group are co-representing North American rights.

The New York Times put prestigious specialty home-video distributor The Criterion Collection under a microscope late last week, and the headline said it all: “How the Criterion Collection Crops Out African-American Directors.” The report looked at all 22 years and more than 1,000 titles in the Criterion’s revered selection of Blu-rays and DVDs of films, finding that only four African Americans are represented: Oscar Micheaux (“Body and Soul”); William Greaves; Charles Burnett (“To Sleep With Anger”); and Spike Lee (“Do the Right Thing” and “Bamboozled”).
It’s a glaring omission for a company that prides itself on licensing and releasing what it describes as “important classic and contemporary films,” but also reflective of an industry-wide practice of shutting out Black filmmakers.
Despite America’s changing demographics, the industry’s most powerful leaders have been slow to respond to a demand for films that reflect cultural and racial shifts that have long been underway.

Gunpowder & Sky’s sci-fi label Dust is teaming with producer John Davis and Black Label Media to develop time-hopping action pic Time Agent. John Wick scribe Derek Kolstad is set to write the feature based on the Korean short film The Time Agent from writer/director Jude Chun, which was previously released by Dust.
“The Dust team lives for amplifying the voices of diverse storytellers and when we first came across Jude’s short film, we knew we had something special,” said Eric Bromberg, General Manager of Dust. “Having the short realized into a feature film with the powerhouse combination of John Davis, Black Label and Derek Kolstad, only confirms our instinct that this will be nothing short of a mind-bending adrenaline-shot-to-the-heart.”

Yeah that’s pretty vague and I could probably sit here and Yahoo it but… I don’t want to!
But… There was always that one show. That one show that only ever had one season on the platform. That one show that has been spoken about in hushed voices since it was first aired. A show that garnered some...

“It was possibly the most frustrating thing I’ve ever been through in my career,” Paul Feig says. “To make something I’m so proud of that was exactly what I wanted it to be that had this amazing cast, and the writing was so good. And then to be so happy with the final product and then nobody sees it.”
Feig isn’t talking about the bizarre internet backlash that greeted the 2016 version of Ghostbusters, but instead, lamenting how a year prior, in 2015, his series Other Space — which originally debuted on the now-defunct Yahoo Stream platform — was shelved with very little fanfare or announcement. If you haven’t heard of Other Space, an 8-episode comedy series, you’re forgiven. At a glance, it feels like a show you know you would instantly love; the aesthetics of ‘70s space opera, but with the jaunty, quirky humor of Community.

A couple of years ago, Claire Foy was poised to become yet another major A-list actor with three big-time projects being released in the span of one year. Coming off her Emmy-winning turn as Queen Elizabeth in “The Crown,” Foy was seen in films, “Unsane,” “First Man,” and “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.” While the first two films were well-received and her acting was lauded, it’s ‘Spider’s Web’ that seemingly derailed her upward trajectory.

British actor Claire Foy is set to front psychological horror “Dust” — a hot project being launched at this week’s virtual Cannes market.
Foy, whose turn as Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s “The Crown” earned her a Golden Globe and Emmy Award, will play a young mother in 1930s Oklahoma. Trapped by increasingly stifling dust storms, she takes extreme measures to protect her family while haunted by her past.
Variety understands the film, which is set around a remote farmhouse, is fairly self-contained, with just a small number of starring roles and a minimalist aesthetic. It’s the kind of project that could bode particularly well for this market, where players across the industry are hyper-aware of the limits of production going forward.
Will Joines and Karrie Crouse, who collaborated on the short film “Propagation,” are to direct from a script from Crouse, whose writing credits include HBO’s “Westworld.
