I consider myself something like a student, autodidact or otherwise, of cinema and––even still, must confess––had not ever grasped the concept of Argentine noir. Credit to Criterion Channel, who’ll expand my horizons with February’s program (concisely titled “Argentine Noir”) that includes one known title––Pierre Chenal’s Native Son, an Argentine film from a French director adapting an American novel about the African-American experience in Chicago––and five I look forward to discovering. Retrospective-wise, their wide-reaching Claudette Colbert program could double as a lesson in Old Hollywood, between Capra, Stahl, DeMille, Lubitsch, Sirk, and Sturges. February, of course, brings Black History Month and Valentine’s Day: the former engenders a series featuring films such as Nothing but a Man, Portrait of Jason, and Losing Ground; the latter brings “New York Love Stories,” from Carol to Crossing Delancey to, curiously, Annie Hall, which likely would not have...

On May 1, 1999, Nickelodeon debuted a new cartoon featuring a bunch of anthropomorphic sea critters called "SpongeBob SquarePants." With bright colors, an amusing protagonist in the form of the titular sponge, and ample absurdist humor, the show became a big hit. Honestly, it's the biggest hit the network has ever seen, still going strong 25 years later with numerous movies and spin-offs under its belt. SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) is known the world over and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
It really deserves to be said how influential and hilarious those early seasons are. Much like "The Simpsons" before it, which had plenty of terrible storylines later on in its run, "SpongeBob SquarePants" may not exist at the creative glory it once retained. But the fact the show's responsible for so many classic jokes that would later turn into memes is something that can never be taken away from it.

The manhwa series has earned acclaim for its rich character development, immersive world-building, and thoughtful exploration of themes like power, loss, and redemption. Amid the immense hype from the isekai community surrounding Tbate’s release, it might surprise some that the author drew no inspiration from other isekai series when crafting the light novel.

Murder, infidelity, gambling, and sinister bed and breakfasts. We rank the stories in Tales Of The Unexpected’s first series…
From 1979 to 1988, Tales Of The Unexpected served up a semi-regular diet of murder, cruelty, betrayal and intrigue. An anthology show initially based on short stories by Roald Dahl (later seasons introduced work by other writers), the series could be described as ITV’s answer to Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
Indeed, several of its stories were previously adapted in that American anthology show. And, just as Hitchcock showed up in front of the camera to introduce his episodes, Dahl appears here, seated next to a roaring open fire, providing an opening ramble about each story.
The title sequence, meanwhile, with its infuriatingly catchy theme tune and silhouettes of dancing ladies, feels like something from an early James Bond movie. Maybe it was Dahl’s homage to his contemporary and friend, 007 creator Ian Fleming…...

Perhaps the most underrated, star-studded Christmas movie, Arthur Christmas, is now streaming on Paramount+. When concerning the best Christmas movies of all time, Arthur Christmas is not one that would commonly appear on every list alongside the likes of It's A Wonderful Life, Elf, or Home Alone. For this reason, Arthur Christmas can certainly be classed as underrated despite having a 92% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as many would agree it is the stark opposite of the worst Christmas movies ever made.
Another reason for Arthur Christmas' status as an underrated movie is its box office. Rather than be ranked among the highest-grossing Christmas movies of all time, Arthur Christmas was only moderately well received. The film earned a worldwide total of only $147 million, which many would agree is not reflective of its critical reception. Now, though, Arthur Christmas has a second chance at redemption. Along with the many Christmas movies streaming on Netflix,...

"Peaky Blinders" might often focus on Cillian Murphy's tough Tommy Shelby, but the crime drama isn't exactly short on important members of his extended family. One of them is Tommy's tormented big brother Arthur Shelby Jr. (Paul Anderson), who ranks among the most recognizable and prominent protagonists of the series.
Anderson plays Arthur as a troubled, seething man who has rage to spare but can't quite match his younger brother's wits. Especially early in the series, the character's hot-headed nature, weaknesses, and personal demons make him an unlikely candidate to see the end of the show. This is something Anderson was extremely well aware of while filming the sophomore season. As such, he and John Shelby actor Joe Cole took to the habit of making their own grim predictions about the plans series creator Steven Knight might have for them. In 2015, Anderson shared some of their discussions with Interview...

Having no scarecrows didn't stop one Stardew Valley player from trying to keep crows off their crops, in the most polite and adorable way. Scarecrows are used to keep crows away from crops, protecting a certain range from the pesky birds. To craft a scarecrow, players need to collect 50 wood, 20 fiber, and one lump of coal, but it can take a beginning farmer some time to acquire these crafting ingredients.
Reddit user coffeeinhaler found themselves in this predicament, unable to craft a scarecrow but wanting to protect their small patch of crops. Luckily, they came up with an adorable solution, placing a sign next to the field that simply says "Crows, stay away plz."

Police detectives investigating Russell Brand regarding historic allegations of sex crimes have asked prosecutors to consider bringing criminal charges against the media personality, according to BBC.
The decision by law enforcement stems from a September 2023 investigative report by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4 Dispatches, which includes testimony from four women who accused the Forgetting Sarah Marshall actor of sexual assault, rape and emotional abuse across a seven-year period at the height of his fame in 2006-2013. One of the women, none of whom know each other and the majority of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity, was 16 at the time of the offense. While Brand has denied the allegations, the women said they felt compelled to speak up given the former presenter’s newfound platform as a right-wing evangelical influencer, who is currently selling a $240 “magical amulet” that wards off Wi-Fi and other “evil energies.”

Luca Guadagnino and Lionsgate announced that the “Call Me by Your Name” and “Queer” director is in final discussions to film a new version of Bret Eason Ellis’ dark horror novel “American Psycho,” nearly 25 years after the same company released Mary Harron’s satirical adaptation. In a key role that elevated his career, the 2000 film starred Christian Bale as yuppie investment banker-turned-serial killer Patrick Bateman.
It’s the kind of announcement destined to raise eyebrows. Guadagnino is in a career sweet spot after “Challengers” and “Queer” this year (and “After the Hunt” in post); he already has many projects in the works, including “Separate Rooms” with Josh O’Connor and a Thomas Mann adaptation in early development. So why is he choosing a remake — and for a film that doesn’t seem that long ago?
New versions of older films are not unusual. Even the word “remake” is tricky here — does that apply with adaptations?...

Overconfidence is often the first stage of failure. No, we are not going to dive into a philosophical session (yet). However, Todd Phillips’ near-perfect plan for Joker: Folie à Deux became a near-perfect disaster.

After years of development, the new DC Universe film Joker: Folie Deux has finally hit theaters, and the film's initial box office performance has been disastrous, leading to questions about who is to blame for DC's latest failure. Audience interest has not been kind to DC in the past few years, and Joker 2's box office numbers clearly suggest that the film will likely be another miss for Warner Bros. Discovery. Movie performance is multifaceted, but there are several errors in making this film that have begun to become clear.
Following The Flash's historic bombing despite bringing back Michael Keaton as Batman, it seems that the studio is struggling to connect with audiences. Following a middling performance by Black Adam and incredible failures of films as different as Blue Beetle, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, and now Joker 2, it seems that nothing the studio is doing is resonating.

Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga begin a bad romance in Todd Phillips’ sequel to his 2019 hit. Read our Joker: Folie à Deux review here.
2019’s Joker was a bit of an anomaly. Taking one of the most popular comic book villains and turning him into a traumatised, misunderstood man with a murderous side won Joaquin Phoenix seemingly every award under the sun, including an Oscar. The film proved to be controversial with its approach to violence, but grossed over a billion dollars at the box office, so naturally, a sequel was hurried into production.
And that sequel is now here. Joker: Folie à Deux arrives in cinemas with a lot of expectations. Can it match, or even top the first one? Will it be as controversial? Will as many people see themselves in Arthur and find the film empowering?
After watching the film, the answer to all of the above seems to be…...

Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker returned to Venice Wednesday night for the long-awaited world premiere of Joker: Folie à Deux with his Harley Quinn, Lady Gaga, on his arm.
The duo, together with director Todd Phillips — who last appeared on the lido with Joker five years ago, winning the fest’s prestigious Golden Lion — were congratulated by an electrified theater audience at the Sala Grande, racking up an impressive 10.5-minute standing ovation. Throughout the ovation, the crowd periodically erupted into chants of “Ga-ga, Ga-ga, Ga-ga!” During breaks in the chants, others shouted, “Gaga, we love you!” The actor-singer thanked and blew kisses to fans when she wasn’t being made to giggle by her co-star throughout the applause.

In a very quick turnaround, Hulu has given a series order to Mid-Century Modern, its multi-camera comedy pilot from Will & Grace creators David Kohan & Max Mutchnick and Ryan Murphy that stars Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, Nathan Lee Graham and Linda Lavin.

PBS Kids' shows in the 90s were full of educational entertainment options that benefited the whole child. Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network may dominate nostalgia conversations, but PBS had a memorable suite of shows. Thanks to the PBS Kids' shows in the '90s, there was no shortage of excellent educational entertainment options. The investigation looked into Brand’s time working on shows like Big Brother’s Big Mouth, Kings of Comedy, and Big Brother’s Celebrity Hijack between 2004 and 2008 (these shows were produced by Endemol, which was bought by Banijay in 2020).

Warning! This post contains minor spoilers for Apple TV+'s Dark Matter.
Dark Matter's well-written characters, portrayed by a talented cast, elevate its compelling sci-fi drama. Focusing on quantum physics principles, the show explores existential questions through character beats. Dark Matter's cast includes Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, and Alice Braga, among others.
Dark Matter's compelling sci-fi drama is further elevated by its well-written characters, perfectly portrayed by its talented cast members. Based on Blake Crouch's book of the same name, Dark Matter is another intriguing addition to Apple TV+'s impressive sci-fi repertoire. When it comes to its multiverse narrative device, Dark Matter seems quite similar to another recent sci-fi series, Constellation, which recently landed on Apple TV+. However, a close look at its themes, plot progressions, and character beats reveals that it is a distinct addition to the overly saturated sci-fi sub-genre.

Ready to head back to the rotten, filthy, violent cesspool that is Gotham? "Joker 2," aka "Joker: Folie à Deux" is the sequel to the box office smash "Joker," which saw Joaquin Phoenix win an Oscar for his dark-n-gritty take on the Clown Prince of Crime. Director Todd Phillips drew inspiration from Martin Scorsese pics like "Taxi Driver" and "The King of Comedy" to tell a moody, violent, very R-rated take on Batman's arch nemesis. The end result broke box office records and earned both praise and scorn. Some critics were impressed with what Phillips had conjured up, while others were downright offended. Audiences, however, turned out in droves, resulting in a film that grossed over $1 billion (with a b).
While "Joker" felt like a pretty self-contained movie that didn't warrant or need a sequel, those box office returns were too good for Warner Bros. to ignore. Phoenix, for his part,...

How does an “A” CinemaScore and 4 1/2 star PostTrak movie with a major star and a dog underdeliver at the box office?
The adventure sports-charged, doggie-with-a-heart title Arthur the King from Lionsgate had no chance of winning a crown this weekend with an $8M-$10M projection. However, many expected this well-received movie to come at the top of expectations. It did not with a $7.5M opening.
Also, the misfiring of “A” CinemaScore, mid-budget movies at the box office is becoming a trend.
Arthur the King‘s underperformance had to do with the fact that it looked ripe for streaming by today’s standards and not theatrical, right? That’s why people didn’t show up? Yeah, but that’s not 100% of the reason.
True, stars need to have a come-to-Jesus with themselves when making streaming movies in conjunction with theatrical titles: Do you water down your marquee image by making yourself available for free at home?...

“Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Dune: Part Two” are both putting up strong holds in North American theaters, staying ahead of Lionsgate’s new based-on-a-real-dog drama “Arthur the King,” which earned $3 million from 3,003 locations on its opening day.
The Mark Wahlberg vehicle is expected to earn south of $8 million heading into the weekend, which would be good for bronze on domestic charts. It’s a solid place to start for the drama, which carries close to a $20 million production budget and boasts a stellar “A” grade from audience survey firm Cinema Score. (Reviews have been mixed.) As a canine comparison, the Channing Tatum-starring “Dog” from United Artists opened to $14 million back in February 2022 before more than quadrupling that with a $61 million total. Plot: An adventure racer adopts a stray dog named Arthur to join him in an epic endurance race.
Review: I was unaware of the true story of Arthur The King initially but after being subjected to the trailer about 9000 times over the course of the past few months, I felt like I knew it well. It looked like your typical inspirational movie. Or as my nephew knows it: the dog movie. Because it’s hard to categorize this as anything else. Sure, there’s adventure racing but this dog is a full-blown character here and takes center stage in the narrative. And it goes about how you would expect.
Arthur the King follows Mikael Lindnord (Wahlberg) and his team of adventure racers. During his last race ever and last chance at completing a life goal, a stray dog joins them on their journey. If you saw the trailer, then chances...

Screen Rant offers sneak peek of Arthur the King with a clip from the featurette "A Love Letter to Arthur". Wahlberg's intense training regimen showcases his dedication to portraying Lindnord's adventure racing lifestyle authentically. Boasting a talented supporting cast, including Simu Liu and Nathalie Emmanuel, Arthur the King hits theaters on March 15.
Arthur The King is a larger-than-life adventure story that is based on true events. The movie adapts athlete and author Mikael Lindnord’s autobiographical book Arthur: The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home, which tells the story of the improbable bond Lindnord forged with a dog while on a 435-mile racing expedition. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg as Lindnord, was written by Lindnord and Michael Brandt (2 Fast 2 Furious) and directed by Simon Cellan Jones (The Family Plan).

Long gone are the days of Mark Wahlberg movies with an edge. The proudly Catholic family man, who once asked God for forgiveness for playing the scantly clad, dream-or-die porn star Dirk Diggler in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Boogie Nights,” now makes films that either hover around religious agitprop (“Father Stu”), are blandly comforting studio comedies (“Me Time”), or action adventure spectacles with no soul (“Uncharted”). In short, he’s making movies meant to inspire rather than challenge audiences these days.
“Arthur the King” certainly won’t inspire legions of new Wahlberg fans, though here is a movie that props him up as a grade-a hero onscreen. Directed by Simon Cellan Jones, this feel-good globe-trotting odyssey shares thematic overlap with all three types of movies as Wahlberg takes on the real-life role of Swedish adventure racer Mikael Lindnord (here renamed Michael Light and recast as American) who, 10 years ago while...

Credit: Carlos Rodriguez/Lionsgate Just to be perfectly clear, the new film Arthur the King has nothing to do with Camelot or the Knights of the Round Table. But it was still a story that resonated with its star (and producer), Mark Wahlberg. In the film, he portrays the captain of an adventure racing team who picks up a new member along his journey — a stray dog named Arthur. So, as someone who’s a rabid sports fan and an animal lover, Wahlberg said the role felt totally natural to him. Written by Marco van Belle (Arthur & Merlin), Mercy is set in the near future when capital crime has increased. The pic follows a detective (Pratt) who...

I don’t know of many Christmas horror adaptations. Sure, I could probably look at the history of Krampus and piece something together but other than that I’m hard pressed so let me know in the comments what I could cover next holiday season. Winter in general has all sorts of movies and stories that they are based off of. The very first episode of this show was all about The Thing and its source material Who Goes There and now in the middle of winter, at least in Colorado, I think it’s time to look at one of the better vampire properties of the 2000s and a great limited series comic. 30 Days of Night was originally pitched as a movie but when it was turned down, the comic came out and put the author’s name on the map. As is the nature of Hollywood, it...

When Nicolas Cage won the Best Actor Oscar in 1995 for his devastating portrayal of a heartbroken alcoholic with a death wish in Mike Figgis' "Leaving Las Vegas," he was 31 years old and soaring into the prime of an already impressive career. He had access to the best screenplays in town and the interest of just about every A-list director. So Cage did what any reasonable movie star would do: he made three of the decade's zaniest blockbuster action movies.
For those of us who fell in love with Cage as the good-hearted punk Randy in Martha Coolidge's lovable 1983 film "Valley Girl," he kind of owed us. Though he's utterly brilliant in "Leaving Las Vegas," Figgis' grimy drama makes "The Lost Weekend" look like "Arthur." It's a brutal, frankly unrewarding ordeal. For close to two hours, we watch Cage's financially/personally ruined screenwriter grimly follow through on his promise to speedily drink himself to death.

It's been less than 15 years since 20th Century Fox tried to leverage the "Percy Jackson" series of books by Rick Riordan into their own version of a "Harry Potter" franchise, replete with well-known adult actors, a group of less familiar child actors, a fantastical setting, and even the director of the first two "Potter" films. But while "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" did well enough to merit a sequel, there must have been some sense of a story that wasn't told as effectively as possible. Now, as we wrap up 2023, and as Disney+ embarks on its fifth year of existence, Percy is back and this time in TV form. "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" (please note the lack of an ampersand in this show's title) goes through the basic story that made up the 2010 film subtitled "The Lightning Thief," but has the benefit and imprimatur of Riordan as...

Ryan O’Neal, the boyish leading man who kicked off an extraordinary 1970s run in Hollywood with his Oscar-nominated turn as the Harvard preppie Oliver in the legendary romantic tearjerker Love Story, has died. He was 82.
O’Neal died Friday, his son Patrick O’Neal, a sportscaster with Bally Sports West in Los Angeles, reported on Instagram. He had been diagnosed with chronic leukemia in 2001 and with prostate cancer in 2012.
“As a human being, my father was as generous as they come,” Patrick wrote. “And the funniest person in any room. And the most handsome clearly, but also the most charming. Lethal combo. He loved to make people laugh. It’s pretty much his goal. Didn’t matter the situation, if there was a joke to be found, he nailed it. He really wanted us laughing. And we did all laugh. Every time. We had fun. Fun in the sun.”
